On Wednesday, June 18, the Nigerian Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika unveiled the name and logo of the new National Carrier, Nigeria Air at the ongoing Farnborough International Airshow in London. Speaking at the unveiling event, attended by prospective investors, airline manufacturers, strategic partners and government delegates, the minister revealed that the Nigerian government owns only a meagre 5% equity of Nigeria Air, therefore, it would be run as a private entity. This information aroused mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some thought it would ensure that Nigeria Air does not face the same fate as its predecessors, others thought it was just another stunt by the government to score cheap points in lieu of the upcoming elections. Domain for sale While the government focused on dazzling Nigerians with the idea of a potentially successful National Carrier, they failed to secure the domain name for Nigeria Air. Advertisement As of July 18, 2018, the day of the unveiling, NigeriaAir.ng and NigeriaAir.com.ng were still available until one person named Olumayowa Elegbede bought them. He has now put both domains up for sale at $66,489 (about ₦24 million) each. Bear in mind that NigeriaAir.com and Nigeria-Air.ng have also been taken. Perhaps, these are indications that people who think Nigeria Air is a hoax may be on to something after all. On the other hand, it might just be another classic case of the government putting less importance on having an online presence. Suggested Read: Despite a ₦20 billion ICT allocation to its agencies in 2017, the Nigerian government is not fully online As it stands, the government has two options; to buy the domain names from Olumayowa or to include Nigeria Air in the gov.ng sponsored top-level domain. The latter is very unlikely since the carrier would be run as a private entity. Also, failure to buy the domains would put prospective clients at the risk of being misled and defrauded because NigeriaAir.ng or NigeriaAir.com.ng would be the default go-to places for many people. Therefore, it is safe to say that Olumayowa would be cashing out soon, even though he’d only be getting a fragment of the ridiculous amount we imagine would be budgeted to develop the National Carrier website. Despite the meeting on Thursday (today) between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to seek an end to the indefinite strike in universities , other unions in the public higher institutions have announced the commencement of their strike by Monday, September 11 . The unions , the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities , Non- Academic Staff Union of Universities , and the National Association of Academic Technologists , made this decision known on Wednesday in Abuja at a press conference addressed by the Joint Action Committee. The Chairman of Joint Action Committee , Samson Ugwoke, who is also the SSANU President, said on Wednesday that the unions took the decision to go on strike because of the failure of the government to implement the Memorandum of Understanding it signed with them after a five -day warning strike in January 2017 . He said that the unions were left with no better option but to proceed on the strike after a series of letters , written to the government on the pending issue of the implementation of the MOU, were ignored. He stressed that 95 per cent of the members of the union voted for the strike to await meaningful dialogue from the government . He said , “ The January strike was suspended on the 18 th of January through the intervention of the Minister of Labour and Employment , Dr . Chris Ngige, who headed the Federal Government team that interfaced with JAC . “ Unfortunately , seven months after , we are still at the sorry situation we were before the MoU was signed as issues in contention were not addressed and government kept a dead silence despite letters and entreaties reminding them of their commitment to the non- teaching staff unions . “ Having cleared from our members and got a direction from them, we hereby announce that the JAC of NAAT , NASU and SSANU has directed its members to embark on a comprehensive, total and indefinite strike, effective from Monday, September 11 , 2017 . “ During the strike, there shall be no provision of services, no matter how skeletal . Concessions shall not be granted while all our members are to stay at home till further notice, unless as directed by JAC through their respective Presidents.” Meanwhile, ASUU said on Wednesday that its meeting with the FG delegation on Thursday (today) led by Ngige , would be to iron out issues, as it would not shift grounds on its positions . The ASUU President, Prof . Biodun Ogunyemi, when asked if the union would reconsider its demands, said the union “ would simply approach the meeting with an open mind .” He said , “ I don’ t understand what you mean by shifting . We have said our positions to the government and the government has told us how far they can go. So, we expect that the meeting will be to iron out things .” source: http://punchng.com/ssanu-nasu-nat-to-join-ASUU-strike-by-sept-11/ cc: lalasticlala |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will on Thursday hold a crucial meeting with the federal government. Thursday’s meeting, if held, will be exactly a week since the lecturers refused to show up for a meeting with the government delegation saying such meeting was “unnecessary.” This Thursday’s meeting is at the instance of the ministers of labour and education and was communicated to ASUU in early hours of Thursday, PREMIUM TIMES learnt. Persons expected to be at Thursday’s meeting are the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, and the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu. The President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, confirmed Thursday’s meeting to PREMIUM TIMES. “We just received the notification of the meeting,” he said in a telephone interview on Tuesday morning. “Until Thursday, that is when we can say what would happen but we have been invited for the meeting.” A National Executive Council meeting of ASUU held last week had reviewed the government’s initial offer to some of the demands of the lecturers. At that meeting, the lecturers resolved to proceed with the strike which commenced on August 13. According to a top ASUU official who pleaded anonymity, the lecturers rejected the federal government’s offer sequel due to lack of “trust.” “Lecturers were not comfortable with the federal government’s offer because previous promises failed,” the source said, seeking anonymity as he was not authorised to talk to the media. “So, it was better to solve all once and for all, so as not to be deceived again.” The federal government had reportedly offered to pay N23 billion and a monthly payment of N1.5 billion pending the outcome of the forensic audit being carried out by the Ministry of Finance on various universities. Some of the demands of the lecturers include payment of shortfall in salaries, universities to be allowed to manage their internal revenue independently and exemption of universities from the Treasury Single Account. source: http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/242414-ASUU-strike-lecturers-govt-delegation-hold-crucial-meeting-thursday.html |

The search giant's new head of diversity has rejected an internal commentary from an employee who suggested women don't get ahead in tech jobs because of biological differences. Danielle Brown, who was named a vice president at the search giant only a few weeks ago, said Google is "unequivocal in our belief that diversity and inclusion are critical to our success," according to a copy of her response obtained by technology news website Gizmodo. The employee memo, titled "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber," begins by saying that only honest discussion will address a lack of equity. But it also asserts that women "prefer jobs in social and artistic areas" while more men "may like coding because it requires systemizing," fueling a smoldering debate about sexism in Silicon Valley. "I'm simply stating that the distribution of preferences and abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes and that these differences may explain why we don't see equal representation of women in tech and leadership," the memo stated, according to Gizmodo. "Many of these differences are small and there's significant overlap between men and women, so you can't say anything about an individual given these population level distributions." The employee was described in news reports as a software engineer. The employee's identity has not been released. Google, like other tech companies, has far fewer women than men in technology and leadership positions. Fifty-six percent of its workers are white and 35 percent are Asian, while Hispanic and Black employees make up 4 percent and 2 percent of its workforce, respectively, according to the company's latest diversity report . While the issue of diversity is getting a lot of attention in Silicon Valley, these numbers are barely changing. But the companies say they are trying, by reaching out to and interviewing a broader range of job candidates, by offering coding classes, internships and mentorship programs and by holding mandatory "unconscious bias" training sessions for existing employees. But, as the employee memo shows, not everyone at Google is happy with this. The issue of gender has long roiled California's technology sector. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Labor accused Google of underpaying female employees, saying it found "systemic compensation disparities against women" at the company. In another controversy, a former female engineer's claims of widespread sexual harassment at Uber in June led the ride-hailing firm to fire more than 20 employees . In another incident, venture investor Dave McClure was forced to publicly apologize for making "inappropriate advances" toward several women in workplace situations. source: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/google-worker-says-women-dont-advance-in-tech-because-of-biology/ |

Facebook on Tuesday announced the beta launch of Facebook Spaces, a new app that allows users to connect with friends and colleagues in an interactive virtual reality environment. Facebook Spaces is available for Oculus Rift and Touch at the Oculus Store. The app provides a way for social media users to hang out as they might otherwise in person -- even bridging great distances -- noted Rachel Franklin, head of social VR at Facebook. An avatar represents each user in Facebook Spaces. Its appearance is based on the user's photo, but can be further modified with choices of eye color, hairstyle and facial features that best fit the person's identity. After creating a virtual persona, users can use Messenger to connect with friends, interact in 360-degree spaces, and utilize the app's selfie stick to further manipulate photos in the VR environment. Social VR Becomes a Reality Facebook acquired Oculus VR just over three years ago for a reported US$2 billion. The deal included $400 million in cash, along with 23.1 million in Facebook shares. Another $300 million would sweeten the deal if and when certain milestones were hit. Facebook hinted at how it might socialize virtual reality in a demo at last year's F8 developer conference. Two employees engaged in a virtual space, even though the pair actually were 30 miles apart. With this week's beta launch, the technology now is open to anyone with an Oculus Rift. "This is the proof of concept right now," said Michael Inouye, principal analyst at ABI Research. My VR Space Facebook Spaces isn't exactly ready for the mainstream yet. "It is still expensive to get into the tethered VR space that is required to access Facebook Spaces," Inouye told TechNewsWorld. "It will cost about $1,000 for the hardware, plus the computer to run it, so this is still very much a beta and experimental technology," he said. "The most interesting thing about Facebook Spaces right now is the real-world/VR integration," observed Stephanie Llamas, lead analyst for AR/VR technology at SuperData Research. "There isn't a big enough VR install base -- particularly on the Oculus Rift -- for multiplayer or social applications to make sense on its own," she told TechNewsWorld. "Allowing people to connect inside and outside of a headset is key," Llamas said, "and this also helps reach people beyond the guarded Oculus ecosystem and sparks the curiosity of a wider audience." Real Problems to Solve There are several issues that need to be addressed before Facebook Spaces can offer a true VR experience, which is why software has been released in beta form. One significant problem is the barrier to entry on the VR side, said Llamas, especially as many users may not have many friends who already have bought into the Oculus platform. "This will really need to work seamlessly and be more than a novelty to encourage people to come back," she cautioned. "Otherwise, curious users will log on once or twice and then just go back to regular Facebook -- something they are already comfortable with and they can quickly open on all their devices." There are technological issues as well. "There still needs to be better eye tracking and better tracking of movement, which would make this more immersing," said ABI Research's Inouye. The Money Won't Be Virtual One thing Facebook certainly will want to do is ensure that the technology can be monetized in the real world. "That is the bigger issue Facebook could face," said Inouye. "Will we see billboards in the backgrounds of the VR world, or will there be virtual items that are branded?" he wondered. The biggest hurdle will be getting people to use it. "There have been a lot of social worlds -- VR or otherwise -- that haven't played out," Inouye pointed out. "There wasn't enough to do -- and if none of your friends have Oculus, you are a party of one, which is contrary to how Facebook is all about connecting with your friends." source: http://www.technewsworld.com/story/Facebook-Builds-a-VR-Space-but-Will-Anyone-Come-84468.html

The Bible was not written in one specific
year or in a single location. The Bible is a
collection of writings, and the earliest
ones were set down nearly 3500 years
ago. So let’s start at the beginning of this
fascinating story.
The first five books of the Bible are
attributed to Moses and are commonly
called the Pentateuch (literally “five
scrolls”).
Moses lived between 1500 and 1300 BC,
though he recounts events in the first
eleven chapters of the Bible that
occurred long before his time (such as
the creation and the flood).
These earliest accounts were handed on
from generation to generation in songs,
narratives, and poetry.
In those early societies there was no
writing as yet and people passed on
these oral accounts with great detail and
accuracy.
The earliest writing began when symbols
were scratched or pressed on clay
tablets. The Egyptians refined this
technique and developed an early form
of writing known as hieroglyphics. The
Bible tells us that Moses was “educated in
all the learning of the Egyptians”, so he
would have been familiar with the major
writing systems of his time. We also read
that God gave Moses “two tablets of the
Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed
by the finger of God”( Exodus 31:18 ). All
this leads to the conclusion that the
earliest writings in the Bible were set
down around 1400 BC.
The writings of the thirty or so other
contributors to the Old Testament span a
thousand years! They recount the times
and messages from Moses’ successor,
Joshua, to the last of the Old Testament
prophets, Malachi, who wrote his little
tract around 450 BC.
Then there is a 500-year period when no
writings were contributed to the Bible.
This is the period between the
testaments, when Alexander the Great
conquered much of the world and when
the Greek language was introduced to
the Hebrews. Indeed, they began to use
Greek so much that the Hebrew language
was replaced by Greek and by another
language, Aramaic, which was spoken all
over that area of the world at that time.
The New Testament was written during a
much shorter period, i.e. during the last
half of the first century AD.
It was the coming of the Messiah, Jesus
Christ, which ignited the flame that
produced the New Testament, as the
new faith swept across the Near East
and then westward to Greece and on to
Rome.
Half of the New Testament books were
contributed by one man, the Apostle
Paul, in the epistles he sent to groups of
new Christians and to his assistants
Timothy and Titus.
The Bible closes with a majestic book of
visions and dramatic views of the future.
It was penned by the aged Apostle John
around 95 AD and describes the new
heaven and the new earth when God’s
kingdom will embrace the universe and
all rebellion and death will be a thing of
the past.
In looking at all these dates, the
important thing to remember is that
when the Bible was written is not as
important as what was written. However,
the when is important also as we sense
how God’s presence persisted through
the centuries and gave us “in the fullness
of time” the full-orbed revelation of
salvation and hope through his son Jesus
Christ.
