Anambra Election: Why Youths Are Behind Nwoye


Anambra State is of course not lacking in successful young men and women. All over the world, enterprising young men and women of Anambra State origin can be found in diverse professions making our country and state proud.

The pathetic performance of Obiano in the three and a half years he has been in office could be inferred by some to be a function of age. However tempting that suggestion looks like, this writer would not believe so. It is my opinion that those who are bound to fail will fail...

Regardless of Obiano’s failures, the youths in Anambra have seen the emergence of Dr. Tony Nwoye as an opportunity to prove the capacity of the youth to deliver. There are many reasons why youths from across the state are rushing in the direction of Nwoye.

The first we have seen is his sense of leadership. As a students union leader we saw him both at the University of Nigeria and as national president of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, lead with responsibility for which he was praised by all. Given that some students who have such opportunities use it to acquire money for themselves or sell out for financial gain, Nwoye was an exception. He stood up for students’ rights and fought the authorities to ensure that students got their dues.

Nwoye was no less forthright in fighting cultism among fellow students, a situation that saw him forming an unusual relationship with the same university authorities that he criticised on other issues. So is the leadership strength of Nwoye that he would go to whatever length to ensure the best interest of those he is leading.

Nwoye as a student was a man who showed good judgments given what a fellow medical student said of him. Dr. Peter Ekwueme, an Enugu based medical doctor, who is presently the Secretary of the Enugu State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association, in a testimony to the character of Nwoye, published in some newspapers after he won the All Progressives Congress, APC governorship ticket ,said: “I am referring to Dr. Tony Nwoye, a person I know so well right from our medical school days. I was a year his senior but served in the SUG House of Representatives of which Tony was the Speaker. He has always been hardworking and industrious while he invested his time, energy and resources in social crusading, civil and human rights activism and in fighting injustice. This ultimately endeared him to all who ever had any encounter with him.”

As a medical doctor and businessman, member of the House of Representatives and now as a governorship candidate, Nwoye is a man who does not show any hairs about his successes in life. At 43, students and youths in Anambra are canvassing for Nwoye, not just because of what he did as a students union leader, but also on account of how he has used his office as a federal legislator to impact many lives within and outside his Anambra East/West Federal Constituency.

Today, many communities in Anambra East/West have access to pipe borne water not because of the efforts of the Obiano government, but through the facilitation of Nwoye. It was the potential the youths and elders in Anambra East/West saw in Nwoye that they defied the entreaties of Obiano not to vote for Nwoye in the 2015 election and voted for him. By that, the people of Anambra East/West slapped Obiano with the bad reputation of perhaps being the only governor in Nigeria not to be able to have a member of his own party represent him in the House of Representatives.

The youths are not despising Obiano’s age. At 60, the governor should have shown more responsibility as an elder, but he has not, and that is why the youths in his Federal Constituency voted for Nwoye. The youths in other parts of the state are now set to follow the people of Anambra East/West by ensuring that a worthy person takes over their affairs as governor.

Ahead of the November 24, Anambra State governorship election, The Association of Anambra Elite (AAE) has cautioned citizens of the state against the aspiration of Hon Tony Nwoye, accussing him various alleged cultism activities.

The group in a statement signed by its secretary, Dr Emeka Ofordinkpa, warned that the relative peace being achieved in the state could be lost if the likes of Nwoye is allowed to contest the governorship election.

As I watched this programme on Channels Tv, I couldn't help but question Tony Nwoye's educational background. If the kind of agboro english that Nwoye was speaking at the programme is the standard for Doctors, then Nigeria is in deep mess.

English is not our mother tongue. Chinese speak very little English, if at all, yet today they are the world's No. 1 Economic Superpower.

I would rather have an honest governor, like Dr Nwoye, with his imperfect English, who will empower our youths & lift the poor out of poverty, than Thief Obiano, with perfect English, but who has stolen upwards of 175 Billion Naira of my State's Commonwealth in just 3.5 years.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, Tony Nwoye, has accused former President Goodluck Jonathan of having sold him out to Governor Willie Obiano during the last governorship election in the state.

Nwoye, who represents Anambra East/West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, made the allegation on Wednesday when he appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“Yes Jonathan sold me out, which he later apologised anyway,” he claimed. “I lost the election before because the then President Jonathan gave all the support to them – to Peter Obi who installed Obiano and that was why they kept me in court.”

“His men assisted people that I contested primaries with, and they kept me in court; I only campaigned for less than 10 days,” he added.

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has been challenged by his opponents to account for the Local Government funds accrued to the state from the federation account.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Tony Nwoye, threw the challenge during a dinner held in his honour in Lagos at the weekend where he criticised Obiano for failing to conduct LG elections for over three years.

He also questioned what the governor has done with the funds meant for LGs which has accrued to the state throughout his first tenure, just as he challenged him to give account of how he expended the funds left behind by his predecessor, the Paris Club funds and the loan of N15 billion which he collect

“Obiano receives councils funds of more than N20 billion from the federal government; he has also received the Paris Club funds of more than N13 billion, yet he gave communities only N20 million each.

“If the councils are supposed to receive over 100 million a month, multiply it by 12 calendar months and you will know how much each Council is supposed to get. For the past three years, he has not conducted Council elections, and he does not give the councils up to 20 percent of their monthly allocations.

“For instance, in a council like Njikoka where you have Enugu-Ukwu, Nimo, Agulu, Abagana and Nawfia, and the governor gives a big town like Enugu-Ukwu N20 million, where then is the money that Enugu-Ukwu is supposed to get from Local Government funds, and I’m not even talking about the state funds.

“Obi swore to an affidavit at the Supreme Court detailing the amount that he left for Obiano and I have the documents to prove. Could Obi have sworn to a false affidavit which can land him in jail? Obiano has squandered the money and now he is claiming that he is giving N20 million to each community which is not up to three percent of the amount that they should ordinarily be getting.

“He keeps signing Memorandum of Understanding and says he wants to build an airport in Umuleri while the hospital close to his hometown is in disrepair. My vision is to liberate my people from the bondage in which this administration has put them,” Nwoye said.

He also said that one of the reasons he is contesting was to challenge the marginalisation of the South -East and ensure that the state gets what is rightfully theirs.

“It is a fact that the South- East has been marginalised but I am here to change all that because I don’t believe that because the Igbo did not vote for APC in 2015 therefore they should be punished. If I become governor, I will ensure that what belongs to us will come to us. I will ensure that some of the federal government policies that affect the Igbo negatively are reversed,” Nwoye said.

Meanwhile, the governorship campaign of Nwoye received a boost, at the weekend as prominent supporters of the aggrieved governorship aspirants, Senator Andy Uba and those of Chief Johnbosco Onukwu, joined his team.....
