Duringthe celebration of Nigeria’s 53rd independence anniversary, Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, remarked about what he called “distortion” of Nigeria’s history, which I found interesting.
He said he did not see the point in celebrating Nigeria’s centenary. Here are his words according to media reports:
“For me, Nigeria was born as an independent sovereign nation on the first of October, 1960. Perhaps, she was conceived in 1914, but as we race towards (the first 100 years) it is important not to distort history.
I would seek better understanding, better explanation by those who are behind the centenary celebration because if we rolled out the drums three years ago to celebrate 50 years of Nigeria’s nationhood, Independence we fought for, people went to jail for, what then is this centenary suddenly about?
“I don’t remember as a child ever coming out at amalgamation day and suddenly, how did we get to 100?”

I can make out two points of disputation here by the learned Senior Advocate. Number one: As Nigeria never celebrated Amalgamation Day, Fashola does not see the point in celebrating 100 years of the Amalgamation. Number two: He does not seem to agree that the years before our independence can count as part of our nationhood, since Nigeria was still under colonial domination.
I will start by observing that His Excellency, BR Fashola, is merely engaging in undue rhetoric on this matter. I am not too surprised, though, that he has bones to pick with the centenary celebration idea, which is basically a brainchild of the Federal Government. This is not the first time that Fashola’s political group, which is now the main body of the All Progressives Congress, APC, will be distancing itself from such Federal Government initiative.
We will recall how that school of political thought disagreed with May 29 as the Democracy Day. That day has absolutely no bearing on our struggle to regain civilian rule from the military.
Instead, it was on June 12 (1993) that Nigerians, for the first time in history, overcame their primordial divides and voted for Chief Moshood Abiola, in spite of his Muslim/Muslim ticket. Fashola’s party, which is an offshoot of the June 12 struggle, settled for that date as the genuine Democracy Day, while the Federal Government forced the rest of the nation to mark it on May 29.
There should be no need to question whether Nigeria will be 100 years by January 2014. Nigeria was conceived and born on January 1, 1914. It was from that day that its inhabitants started being known as “Nigerians”. Yes, it was under the imperial rule of the British Crown, the parent nation.
Everything that happened from that day till date is part and parcel of the history of Nigeria. That we did not celebrate Amalgamation Day under the British did not take anything from the fact that Nigeria started existing as a political entity from the day it was amalgamated.
I believe that Nigerians should celebrate the centenary of her history. We should mark that day, but without much pomp and colour. Rather, we should mark it with sobriety and determination to turn a new leaf in the second century.
We should see the centenary as a milestone upon which to fashion out a new, better, happier, more equitable, workable and progressive nation to bequeath to ourselves and future generations. We of today must seize the moment and package a better Nigeria to hand over to our children.
Luckily, we now have the opportunity of a national conference. Let us not fluff it. Let us spend more time, energy and resources to ensure that this conference spawns a second century Nigeria we can all be proud of than wallowing in uncalled-for celebration of failure, tears and woe. Let us also not treat the moment as if it never existed.
Nigeria’s first100 years of bitter history can never be wished away, but we can fashion a second 100 years of surge, accomplishments and victory.

@ Tolexander,so nigeria has no history before independence ? So all this countries like libya,iran,egypt etc that got their independence in the 40s,50s and 60s all started having history after independence ? U guys cant stop been funny.
FG is celebrating centenary anniversery and nt independence.They are two different events for God sake.Whats so confusing there ? For ur information,nigeria got history before independence,after all my great grand father was an administrator during the colonial era,and so are many nigerians in govt.then.The british were ruling through indirect rule by using nigerians as their eyes,,thats history. Also u can read about usman dan fodio,jaja of opopo,yoruba,igbo,and housa heritage(history).Peace

Oga fash,there is a difference btw amalgamation and independence. Yes,Nigeria got her independence in 1960,but the nation called Nigeria came into existence in 1914,when the northern and southern part of the country were join together as one.Thats what the FG is celebrating,and nt independence.Know the differences pls.

I was there live at ekwueme sq.I will say the celebration was a very colourful one.Is it the police parade,the immigration ser.the nscd,the corpers who supplied band in conj.with the army,red cross,m.o.ds,man o war,the anambra indigens disengaged workers,the indomie company,the over hundred schools,the calisthenics and cultural display,ajo offia,ada mma and izzaga masqurades etc tha all performed ? What i even loved most was the turn out of the masses. I shed tears when then school of the needs(deaf and dumb students)addressed the gov.during their match pass. I also recognised the christ embassy followers who were busy handing down the independent raphsody books and cds plate for free. Kudos to the organisers and all the security outfits. It was a nice event and i enjoyed it.

Really love the environment. Sure,that area is really a government area.We have the house of assembly,state high court,federal high court,the state secretariat,the asubeb,and the ongoing fed secretariat been constructed plus other govt buildings.It deserved the name"three armed zone" indeed.

Even if the story of the missing documents was true,how do you guys think that will affect the existence of the party ? What the party just do is for them to just get a court affidivit and they are covered pending when inec issue a new one. Is just like a graduate who lost his result,do u think that wil be the end of him or that he is no longer a graduate of his skul again ? Is just a simple thing to solve which requires time and legal backup.....

Abuja — President Barack Obama has invited President Goodluck Jonathan for a meeting in New York next month, the United States’ Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Ms Wendy Sherman, has said.
Speaking with State House correspondents after meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan, Ms Sherman said Nigeria is a very important country, not only in Africa but in the world, which cannot be ignored.
Reacting to a question on whether the failure of Barack Obama to visit Nigeria during his last trip to Africa was a snub onNigeria, the American official parried the question while emphasising the importance of Nigerian/USA relations.
“Our presidents will likely meet soon. I willleave that announcement to the President of the United States and the President of Nigeria.
“But Nigeria is a very important country, not only here on the continent but aroundthe world.”
Nigeria has served on the Security Council of the UN and it is likely to do so again in future.
“ It is the head of the Committee on Democracy and has been leader in so many ways, like in ECOWAS as a peace-keeper all around the world. These are thepartnerships that are important to us.”
Sherman who is leading a delegation to the US-Nigeria Bi-National Commission meeting described the commission as an invaluable tool for the two countries to work together for a strong relationship between them.
She added that the commission would support Nigeria as it moves forward to meet all the challenges before it.
She identified the issues before the bi-national commission to include security, governance, education and agriculture.
Sherman said during her meeting with Jonathan, she delivered a letter from Obama to President Jonathan who accepted it adding that her country looks forward to working with Nigeria further on the basis of the letter.

Langtang massacre: Death toll rises to 70on July 03, 2013 at 3:00 am in News

Jos — The death toll from last week’s attack on communities in Langtang South Local Government of Plateau State has risen to 70, while no fewer than 7,000 have been displaced.
Member representing Langtang North/South Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Beni Lar, who confirmed this during a visit to the affected parts, said several people were still missing.
Similarly, the state Commissioner of Police,Mr. Chris Olakpe, confirmed that the District Crime Officer, DCO, for the area wasstill missing and that 20 more corpses had been recovered.
Lar said: “From what I gathered, the Divisional Crime Officer is still missing, seven thousand people were displaced, while almost 70 lost their lives.
“The intention of the attackers was to wipe out the entire inhabitants of the villages for no just reason.”
Addressing displaced persons in different camps at Mabudi, headquarters of the local government, she described the attackas barbaric, noting that they were able to carry out the attack because of the vulnerability of the villages.
She said security men were unable to gainaccess to the area because of the bad roads and appealed to government to attend to them to open up the locality.
The police commissioner, Olakpe, said: “From the report I got from my men, 20 additional bodies have been recovered and the DCO is still missing.
“But we have not concluded that anythinghas happened to him. We are still looking for him and hoping that he will be found.”

Governor Peter Obi’s declaration of his imminent political retirement is an affirmation of the unusual political steps of the governor in his more than seven years in office
“For me, I have come to the end of it; I want to quit and rest,” Governor Peter Obisaid in a remark to the synod of an Anglican Church in Enugu last Sunday.
After two terms in office punctuated at different times by the macabre instincts particular to Anambra politics, Governor Obi’s decision to exit the stage is indeed remarkable.
His decision to quit politics when many other governors in the second term are planning for either the presidency, or to retire into the Senate, is a departure from the norm.
But Obi has not been a normal governor. The sight of Governor Obi sauntering into an airport with one or two aides, and sometimes alone, is not strange to many Nigerians.
In many public functions where other governors are heralded by a long entourage of hangers on and protocol officers, Obi would normally saunter in alone or with not more than a handful of aides.
It was obvious that his aversion to protocol came from his first days in office as governor in 2006.
”When I came in as governor, I discovered that the state had 70 workers in Abuja liaison office. Apart from their salary, we spend close to N15 million maintaining that office. They have nothing doing therethan to come to the airport and welcome me whenever I visited, constituting nuisance. So we re-deployed the workers and closed down the place. Till date, we have not missed them, which means they were really doing nothing there,” he declared last Sunday.

With the savings from such cuts, Governor Obi has even to the admission of several critics been able to up development in Anambra State sustaining and in some cases upping the legacies he inherited from Governor Chris Ngige.
One area of success is particularly road network and it is reported that the road network in Anambra State is about the best of all the Southeastern states.

It is a rather departure from the vogue where wives of governors and their children abuse the society with their wantonness.
However, his very public aversion to the code of behaviour of the ruling class is alleged in some quarters to be a façade for his alleged political ruthlessness and some also whisper, corruption.
However, none of his several antagonists among the ruling class has been able to point at one act of corruption against the outgoing governor. Obi in any case was a very rich man with board appointments insome of the country’s most outstanding blue chip companies before his ascent to the governorship in 2006.
However, even where he can prove himself to be above board in money matters, Governor Obi is now variously credited to be a ruthless politician despite his acclaimed exasperation with that tradein this country.
His bold trouncing of the political godfathers in Anambra State is a testimony of his staying power.
Sir Emeka Offor, Chief Arthur Eze, Chief Chris Uba, billionaire businessmen who before the advent of Governor Obi pulled much influence in the politics of the state have largely returned to their respective businesses given what is alleged as the bad political business that Obi has turned politics in the state into.
Some say that a demonstration of the political ruthlessness of the governor is the brazen offensive he has launched against the chairman of his party, Chief Victor Umeh. Until recently, Obi it would be recalled, was in the same camp with Umeh in the crisis that bestirred the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA.
But now in cahoots with his uncle, Sylvester Nwobu-Alor, a member of the second republic Anambra State House of Assembly, he has fought a bruising political battle against Umeh.
Umeh has accused Obi like many other governors of refusing to conduct local government elections and appropriating the funds for the local governments for the execution of state government projects.
But in all, none has yet accused or faulted Governor Obi of personal corruption.
However, many former associates accuse him of political deception as reflective of his warm embrace of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP at the national level.
It is the romance between him and the PDP in Abuja that fueled suggestions that the governor was headed for the party at the end of his tenure.
However, given the recent declaration of the outgoing Secretary to the State Government in Anambra State, Mr. OselokaObaze to succeed the governor next year, Obi’s declaration of his imminent political retirement looks doubtful.
Obi it is alleged, personally recruited Obaze from the United Nations secretariat in New York, United States to become the SSG. Obi has also declared that he would canvass for his successor to come from Obaze’s Anambra North senatorial district.
Perhaps that could be Obi’s last political fight!

Which Governors can President Jonathan rely upon? 0

Quite often, many State Governmentsin Nigeria openly express dissatisfaction with the sharing of the proceeds of the federation account. Last week, the trend took a rather serious turn when Commissioners for finance from the States walked out on the Minister of State for Finance, Dr Yerima Lawal Ngama who chaired the May 2013 Federation Account Allocation Committee meeting in Abuja.
As was expected of the father of the nation, President Goodluck Jonathan sought to resolve the bone of contention with state governors in a meeting in Abuja– a decision that would have presented a good opportunity for the aggrieved states to table their grievances. Surprisingly, most of the governors according to media reports refused to turn up for the meeting. Why would governors shun a meeting called by the President when he and a majority of them belong to the same political party- the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)?
Anybody who has followed the recent activities of our Governors would probably answer the questionwith some ease. Until recently, the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) was a united and powerful body of all Governors in Nigeria. For some strange reasons, the PDP which produced the majority of the governors suddenly set up another forum for its own governors as if to halt some anti-PDP feelings in the main NGF. Interestingly, the body was at the time also led by a PDP Governor-Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State making it appear that the problem of the PDP was not the Governors Forum but its leader-Amaechi. In due course, the plot to upstage the latter as Chairman of theNGF became the topical issue of discourse everywhere in the nation.
The prominence which this gave to the body made people to assume that perhaps the President himself had a hand in it. While some critics condemned his alleged undue interest and asked him to leave the forum to its owners-the governors, others who were not comfortable with what they described as Amaechi’s disloyalty, urged the President to look for another NGF chairman that he could rely upon. Now, which Governor can President Jonathan trust?
It would be foolhardy to ask the President to look for such an ally from non-PDP governors because they are the main pillars of the emerging political coalition which is seeking to take over the governmentat the centre. To even consider that as an option would be a major risk. So, is it safer to trust a fellow party member? Some would say yes but not Amaechi. But then, there is doubt if other PDP Governors are actually better than him, because if Amaechi alone was the problem, no PDP governor would have voted for him after the party had ostensibly anointed a different candidate.
Oh yes they did and boasted about their feat only a few days ago. The explanations of Governors Kwankwaso of Kano and Lamido of Jigawa clearly showed the two governors to be strong characters that could not be teleguided. Thus if PDP is looking for weaklings it must look at a different direction from these their two members. The same appears to be true of Murtala Nyako of Adamawa, Babangida Aliyu of Niger and Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto. The latter would not even take kindly to any purported disciplinary action against him by the party. If therefore, there are certain impending important party assignments, the President needs a back up team.
Unfortunately, the other PDP governors may not be able to do this necessary backing. Although some ofthem are always being portrayed as loyalists, there is danger in giving assignments to persons who are quite proficient in adducing “strong” reasons for why the assignments failed. If we take the alleged mandate to unseat Amaechi as a test case, there are too many questions begging for answers. Is it true for instance that the party’s anointed candidate changed from time to time making the party look confused? There is in fact the story that at a point, Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State revealed that Governor Yuguda of Bauchi was to replace Governor Shema of Katsina as the President’s choice for the election against Amaechi; but later changed it to Jonah Jang of Plateau. This can easilygo for a shoddy job. Who wants to give the handlers a second assignment?
In addition, some of the reasons being given for why Amaechi could not have won the election are more annoying. There is the claim that the man won because as a sitting chairman he didn’t step down beforevoting started. That would probably have been a good reason for why the anti-Amaechi group should have refused to vote. Instead, after voting,they said they didn’t and when a recording of the event surfaced, theysaid the filming was illegal. It is in retrospect more irritating to imaginethat although, the group kept talking about 19 signatories who pledged to support Governor Jonah Jang, we have continued to see only 16 persons in the group as the results of the election reflected. The group has not been able to increase even by one member. It was the same figure of loyalists that took part in the search for legitimacy by paying courtesy calls on some leadersof only one party- the PDP. Why could they not visit elsewhere? Why did the figure of those in the factionnot change when the group opened its secretariat?
The implications of the Amaechi faction remaining the majority are grave. As one member of the group said, the faction boycotted the meeting called to resolve the federation account allocation impasse to protest what it called the presidential recognition of the loser of an election.
Considering that the posture of the losing team can give the President a bad image, this is the appropriate time for Jonathan, a man with a pan-Nigerian mandate to discard sycophants and re-engineer his teamnotwithstanding the vote of confidence on him by his party some 3 days ago. In this search, he should remember the saying that “when a man is searching for his lost item, he may never find it if a thief is among those in the search party”

How many times will the FG award that bridge ? Obj,Yar'adua and now Gej...haba.They are just awarding that bridge every year to a company.
