PoliticsRe: Was Tinubu’s Speech ‘leaked’? What To Know About Presidential Broadcasts by othermen:
The leak is non-issue. Other than to demonstrate that in the chain , there is an editor partisan enough to embarrass the presidency.

The speech is the issue.

clear demands being made by the people.

The speech would have done well to meet at least some of the demands mid-way and state why others will jeopardize the nation’s long term interest.

The speech is a missed opportunity. Appears the president do not appreciate his situation.

The heat is yet to come.

Kneel before the pastor and plead with him to deliver you from the spirit of rebelliousness.

Afterwards, ask the pastor what date will be appropriate for the marriage, ask also whether or not you should inform your parents.

As a thank you to the pastor, become his personal assistant, while your wife become a personal assistant to his wife.
BusinessRe: Dormant Accounts More Susceptible To Fraud, CBN Will Keep It For You - Cardoso by othermen: 5:26pm On Jul 23, 2024
The commercial banks will be dissatisfied with this arrangement.

But it’s a policy in the interest of the country.

With CBN, the proceeds from the fund accrue to Nigeria, and no longer does it go to the coffers of the billionaire owners of the commercial banks.
PoliticsRe: Dangote Vs NNPC: Here’s What Happens Next, By Mayowa Tijani by othermen:
1. Tinubu is surrounded with technocrats that are not the clueless Jonathan or Buhari cohorts, they will get their dues. For themselves and perhaps for Nigeria.

Dissatisfied

2. There is a northern agenda, current in the pipeline. Might be the next election. Might not be, for it’s already uneasy in the north. If the restless youths are unleashed, the FCT is easy to take. Dangote has the resources to bargain to keep the wealth to himself.

Even in this story, you find it is skewed to shield Dangote and make it seem Dangote is a victim of retribution. In the courtroom, Osho Samuel would have ensured a balance.

3 is for the foolish brothers from Kaduna that will be led to the slaughter.

3. Dangote and Emefiele share the same sleeve. Is Dangote cement or Dangote salt or Dangote sugar more affordable for you?? It’s more affordable outside the country. Yet, there are the externalities. The destruction of our roads, road accidents that have claimed uncountable lives owing to his trucks, and our commonwealth resources which all these time has been for him to loot.

Dangote is now willing to sell his refinery to the NNPC, and asking Nigerians to pay for his alleged substandard product. He does after the government official said the quality was below par, and that this presidency will not accede to his demands to make his refinery the sole provider of fuel.

We must know our place in this conflict. And know that the media are just instruments of whoever can wield it.
SportsRe: Guinness World Record's Chess Record Holders Are Norwegians, Not Tunde Onakoya by othermen:
So Op is not the author of the article and the story shouldn’t stir the sentiments many are eschewing. This is a story published by Cable, I actually read the Fij version. That said, let us clarify some notions:

Onakoya did say he was aiming for the Guinness world record.

https://twitter.com/Tunde_OD/status/1778832760674623765

He was celebrated for endeavoring to break the record.

https://twitter.com/PeterObi/status/1781732085692031173

Yet, it might just be the case that his effort is still under review. The duration the review has taken is however, noteworthy. Especially, with the remarkable press associated with the endeavor.

That said, his was longest chess marathon without losing a game. Not just for the longest chess marathon. But I don’t think there’s a distinction. I didn’t see the category for “without losing a game” on Guinness record website. Also, before he can make an application, there has to be a record to break.

Onakoya mentioned he was going for the longest chess marathon record and that he was hoping to win it from Hallvard and Sjur. But I do not think he eventually played for this category.

https://twitter.com/Tunde_OD/status/1658043832666079235

Also, there is a category for longest chess marathon and a different category for longest chess marathon (individual) . On GWR website, there is no current record holder for the latter category. It must be this category that Onakoya applied for. Bryn and Vea won for the former, which likely requires two players. So, one might still say, GWR is reviewing Onakoya attempt.

Perhaps, the quality of Onakoya event would be greater if it were an open challenge, such that Onakoya played against random people or professional players. But if those he played against were carefully selected using a criteria that they must be novices in chess. Then the Guinness world record body may be hesitant to recognize that category. Instead, merging it with the existing category. They might ask, “what if Tinubu decides to start his own football league and score a thousand goals, is he then the highest goal scorer in football history?” Of coz, they would be interested in the quality of his opponents. I looked at GWR website, and saw instances (look at most simultaneous games of chess by an individual) the record holder Maghami had played against an additional 469 opponents but they did not meet the qualifying criteria of possessing a published Elo Rating of at least 1,200, and as a result, were not considered for the record.

Not sure about Onakoya strategy or what GWR were thinking. But, if this was the case and the case was the premise for shunning his record, It is still shameful on the award body not to have officially acknowledged or disavow Onakoya record/effort.
SportsRe: Super Falcons Players Stuck In An Elevator (Video, Photos) by othermen:
They are likely to take the same elevator again before it is cleared as safe to use.

In another country, the players will be accessed as to the emotional harm the incident caused.

The hotel would even refund the pay for fear of being sued for failure to provide a safe environment and emotional distress, but to us, it is all cruise.

Add-

So perhaps, my grammar was below par. But then when I said “in another country” I am referring to players of another country. The location of the incident is not my point. I am focused on the victims, so if these were to be Players from USA, such an incident might be investigated.

Foreign AffairsRe: What Happens Next Now That Biden Has Dropped Out? by othermen:
This morning, numerous posts focused on US election, yet, there are pressing concerns in Nigeria. Even US forums haven't devoted as much coverage to this topic.

Let us see opinions on:

- what Jagaban stance on dangote monopolies might be? : Is the presidency truly protecting the country's interests or is Jagaban driven by greed, wanting so much and willing to cut Dangote’s wing? How Jagaban and Dangote disagreement may contribute to sponsoring northerners to protest and March on Aso Rock.

/The upcoming national protest: Is it a genuine movement for change or a politically motivated event? Should concerned citizens participate?

- The labour congress's failures: How have they let the people down, and what can be done to address this? Or were they successful? In the end, what is the fate of SMEshuh

- The Ooni of Ife and the allegations.

Let's focus on stories and opinions that matter to our country and on issues that affect us directly.
Foreign AffairsRe: Biden Was Never Fit To Serve, He Must Resign - US House Speaker, Johnson by othermen:
In House of the Dragon, Queen Alicent advises her son, King Aegon, "Wearing the crown doesn't automatically grant you wisdom." When he asks what she would have him do, she responds, "The one thing you can do is nothing at all."

The president does not have to be ‘fit to serve.’ He just need to act. That’s why those surrounding and supporting a politician matter as much as the politician. The actor is the pawn. Tinubu for instance is likely a pawn in his capacity as our president, and we should be interested in who the captain of the ship is. That is the real president.

Although, a little late, I'm overall pleased with the platform's improvements in delivering timely news and updates.

However, I suggest introducing a feature to sort comments by 'likes', in addition to the existing 'first to comment' option. This way, users can prioritize relevant comments and encourage meaningful contributions.

Currently, the platform's format discourages users from making pertinent comments, as they may end up on later pages with little engagement.

I often hesitate to contribute to posts because my comments may not be seen or interacted with. Moreover, some comments from users who may not be mentally fit or constructive can detract from the platform's value. That is what you find in many instances.

Quick to comment, only to detract from the quality of the forum.

If you are like me, who visits the platform primarily to engage with interesting comments, (nairaland had many in the past) I believe my suggested feature would enhance user experience and serve as an incentive to keep conversations meaningfully engaging.

On a Monday morning, what does reading this particularly story, taking the time to comment, and going as far to verify, tell you about my mental and social state? Not flattery ba.
PoliticsRe: NPF Clarifies Mischievous Content With IGP’s Picture Circulating On WhatsApp by othermen:
This post would be richer if you also share the false message upon which a disclaimer is issued.

The police Twitter page merely shared a screenshot, this forum would have added value by showing the complete post the IGP is disclaiming.

Also, it appear the disclaimer is to the spirit of the intended action (I.e. the police do not want any protest whatsoever), and not necessarily the bullets (I.e. don’t protest in Lagos, do your protest in Anambra and Kaduna). That’s why the actual post would enrich our understanding as to what the disclaimer is really about.

Would they support his decision or be disappointed with his departure?

It’s the expectation, so there is no disappointment.

Foreign AffairsRe: Riot In Leeds, United Kingdom Over Child Services (Video, Pictures) by othermen:
The sun-baked soil of Africa was a distant memory for the young girl, Bidemi, as she stepped off the bus and onto the unfamiliar pavement of her new home. Her father, Deolu, had worked tirelessly to bring their family to this new land, seeking a brighter future for his daughter. With a mix of excitement and trepidation, Bidemi clutched her father's hand as they made their way to their new apartment.

As they settled into their new life, Deola’s dedication to Bidemi’s education only grew stronger. He labored long hours to ensure she had the best possible chance at success, and his hard work paid off as he soon could afford to get Bidemi accepted into a local elementary school.

At first, Bidemi struggled to adjust to the unfamiliar customs and expectations of her new school. In Ibadan, children were taught to respect their elders with silence and obedience. But here, her classmates seemed to have an unspoken freedom to express themselves, even to the point of telling adults to "shut up." Bidemi watched in awe as her peers confidently asserted themselves, and she began to wonder why she couldn't do the same.

As the days turned into weeks, Bidemi’s newfound confidence grew. She started to speak up in class, sharing her thoughts and ideas with her teacher and classmates. But with this newfound freedom came a reckoning. One evening, as they sat down to dinner, Bidemi complained about the meal, saying she was tired of eggs and wanted chicken instead. Then, she was tired of yoghurt and wanted Sobo. Deolu, taken aback by her assertiveness, scolded her for her attitude. But Bidemi, fueled by her newfound sense of self, shot back, "Shut up, Daddy!"

The slap that followed sent shockwaves through their small apartment. Bidemi’s eyes welled up with tears as she retreated to her room, her heart heavy with regret. But the damage was done. The teacher noticed Bidemi’s unusual silence the next day and, after hearing the story, immediately contacted child services.

The days that followed were a blur for Ogbeni Deolu. He lost his joy, his mind and his ability to work as he struggled to come to terms with the consequences of his actions. The courts deemed him unfit to care for Bidemi, and she was taken into protective custody. Deolu’s world crumbled around him as he realized he might never be with his beloved daughter again.

Two long years passed, and Deolu’s once-strong spirit was broken. He perished, a shadow of the man he once was, his heart forever scarred by the loss of his daughter and the life they once shared.

In the two years that passed, the Child services contacted Deolu, informing him that Bidemi was doing well in her new foster home and that he could have supervised visits with her. Initially overjoyed, Deolu eagerly agreed, hoping to rebuild their relationship.

However, when Deolu was finally reunited with Bidemi, he was met with a stranger. The vibrant, curious girl he once knew was now a confident, self-assured young woman who seemed to have moved on from his love. Bidemi was polite but distant, and Deolu’s heart sank as he realized she had formed strong bonds with her new family.

As the visits continued, Deolu struggled to connect with the daughter he once knew so intimately. Bidemi’s new family had become her rock, and she seemed to prefer their company to his. The pain of this realization was almost too much for Deolu to bear.

Helping Abidemi recover, her new foster family
provided her with mental health support and she began therapy. Her therapist helped her uncover the deep-seated effects of the beatings she received as a child in Ibadan, and that it had profoundly impacted her mental health and might affect her own disposition and tolerance for abusive relationships.

As Bidemi worked through her trauma, she began to recognize the abusive patterns in her relationship with her father, Deolu. It was just the slap, but the more her foster family made her watch Nigerian movies on YouTube and saw the way parents corporally punished their children in Africa, the more she adopted the children’s pain and hated her father.

With the newfound understanding, Abidemi spoke out about the abusive relationship she had with her father, sharing her story with everyone around her. While this was a liberating experience for Bidemi, it further drove Deolu to madness. He never used a cane on Abidemi in Ibadan.

No one would have Deolu and so he descended further into a dark abyss of denial and anger. He gave a statement calling his Abidemi a liar. It seemed to him, that the dearth of his daughter’s love was not enough, now, Abidemi would also take the love he could gain from elsewhere, for standing with him seemed like standing against Abidemi. This was the source of the rejection of his community and why he sought to publicly rebuke her.

It was just a slap, but Abidemi spoke at length about the abusive relationship. It was an excuse for her inadequacies, and a source of livelihood for her and her foster family. As she spoke, Deolu’s reputation got further tarnished, and he was shunned and his descent into madness was sealed. It was his village people, he wrongly said.

As Bidemi shared her experience with the world, the foster family who had taken her in were the center of attention. They were hailed as heroes for providing a safe haven for Bidemi and for supporting her in speaking out against her father's abuse. They reaped rewards, received donations and funding for their "noble" work, and their nonprofit organization grew exponentially.

Bidemi’s mental health fraying under the pressure of constantly reliving her trauma, didn’t matter. the foster family's priorities was clear. They were more invested in keeping the spotlight on themselves and the cause than in ensuring Bidemi’s well-being.

Her mental health was an insignificant cost and they told her, the suffering she experienced was a necessary sacrifice for the greater good – to raise awareness and bring an end to abuse.

Bidemi condition worsened, and when the madness that took her father had consumed her too. She yearned for Deolu, her father, but no one heard her.

In the absence of no shoulder to lean on, Bidemi became reliant on substances to cope. It could dull her pain, ease her regret.

In the obituary, published after her suicide, the foster family made sure to mention she was a fighter who eventually succumbed to her father’s abuse.
EducationRe: No More Admissions Into Higher Institutions For Persons Below 18 Years - FG by othermen: 11:48am On Jul 18, 2024
The Minister’s sons and daughters and grandchildren (all abroad) are getting their university degree before they are 18 years.

The minister is not focused on making our universities competitive or improving the output from our universities.

What is the problem exactly with having 16 year old get admission? Their counterparts in other countries do. You even find a 16 year old having a more robust frame of mind and strength of will than those older.

Parents would now send their children to study in South Africa and Ghana.

Ok.

But what does she mean by declaring war?

She thinks declaring war is a suicidal mission that must be undertaken.

Is this war on Obidients?

And is it to be waged by using her influence to weaponize the police to silent her detractors?

The Obidients takes no prisoners.

Even Soyinka and Adeboye that didn’t endorse Tinubu have had their social capital depleted.

The ideation about suicide is perhaps in reference to her social capital.

Nobody is asking that she keeps quiet.

The clamor is that she enforces her right through the civil court.

Urgent issues with current momentum are being discussed on the trending and new forums, but they're not being highlighted on the front page until they're no longer timely or until they become irrelevant.

Maybe tomorrow on front page. You will see “Tinubu declared winner of 2023 election.”

Nairaland should break news. That’s why viewership on the platform is at a low. Let Mod be properly paid and motivated to do their responsibility diligently. Review the diligence to include scouting for news on Twitter. Let this platform be where the news first got their steam.

In most cases, no death benefit payout if the insured commit suicide. Except there is a suicidal death clause.

Now, members of the family are shielded from the potential negative consequences of disclosure. You could see the uninformed comments on this platform the other day: even perhaps more painful than the passing. Not to talk about the social exclusion the children are fated.

It would have been naive if the family had disclosed that he committed suicide.

BusinessRe: Ex-Konga CEO, Nick Imudia Reportedly Commits Suicide by othermen:
Now, it will be remembered all that he was about that could have hinted at his demise. Even in the basic, the loved ones will now see signs hinting at his struggles and it will hurt them.

Is it not some form of punishment for the loved ones, who must now contend their failures in not taking any effective drastic actions such as committing him to some mental health institutions?? They might have made efforts, but it’s a public that don’t care about such efforts in our contention that suicide is a failure of one’s loved ones positioned to have done more to prevent the outcome.

Yet, we are a public, focused only on ourselves. In church, sometimes back, we were even taught in our Sunday school that mental health issues were evidences that we are disconnected from God. How do we build a solidarity premised in such shortsightedness and stigma? Yet, we are a public, that should say his loved ones failed him.

Would likely mess up the daughter’s mental health and I hope his loved ones get all the support they can get for the emotional distress that will also be exacerbated by our public proficiency in compassion and understanding.

That said, I hope our police force also consider the likelihood of his case being a homicide.

EducationRe: Blessing Iripia Alims: UNICAL Elects First Female SUG President After 49 Years by othermen:
Congratulations to her!! And I hope I can say congratulations to the students.

I remember what we looked for in aspirants during my undergraduate days. They were all superficial. This candidate is more friendly, this candidate has organized free tutorials, this candidate has a great fashion sense. Even sometimes, we assumed that academic achievement is a relevant criteria.

So, did we ever achieve a candidate who was able to effectively represent our interests or successfully bargain for better first-aid or care for students at the Jaja clinic or successfully bargain that our power supply be improved or our broken toilets be fixed? Or that our fees if not reviewed lower, not be outrageously tripled?

No! None of thEs.

And the reason was because, we didn’t seek such candidates. I wished someone told us to reorient our thinking and prioritize proper qualities like courage, empathy, a commitment to social justice and intelligence relevant to the position. Zik hall was close, but it was the Elder’s choices that always triumphed and the elders were the ones who probably sanctioned that one of their colleagues be stripped naked and marched to Idia and Awo. If there was a student who was courageous to speak up for a thief and save him from lynching, a student that challenged oppressive authorities even among the students bodies, a candidate who could demonstrate they could achieve a win-win goal in their negotiations - yet willing to accept a suspension for mobilizing students to demand a pedestrian bridge because he was mad for the students safety. A student who saw any suspension or victimization as a badge of honor insofar it’s achieved in his effort to amplify the student’s interest. It is such people to hope for.

But often we settled for candidates who were only seeking to boost their egos or pad their resumes, rather than serve.

I hope the University of Calabar students finds in this president elect, a leader that embodies the right values.
