POLITICS Is the Chime, Ekweremadu tussle over? font size Print Email 02.Dec.2014 DISQUS_COMMENTS Jude Ossai Rate this item1 2 3 4 5 (0 votes) GOVERNOR Sullivan Chime of Enugu Sate and the deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, no doubt, are among the leading political figures in the South east in the present dispensation. Each of them wields varying degrees of influence, as their actions and in-actions often shape the tempo and direction of political events in the state. On the streets, offices and markets in Enugu, the state capital, the issue of who controls the structure of the ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) between the two elicits much passion among the people. Before the party’s ward congress in November, the projection in some quarters was that Senator Ekweremadu could have the last laugh over the seeming political rivalry between them. But, following the selection of a House of Representatives Committee Chairman on Maritime, Honourable Ugwuanyi, as the consensus governorship candidate of the PDP, the profile of Chime soared. There was spontaneous jubilation, especially among the stakeholders in the Nsukka axis, where the leading political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) had agreed to select their standard bearers. Subsequent events after the congress showed that the Chime’s group was in trouble, particularly because of the ruling of an Abuja High Court that favoured Ekweremadu’s group. As a matter of fact, the exit of Vita Abba as the state chairman of the party became a catalyst for the politics of the Coal City, prompting the governor to seek possible assistance from the PDP national leadership, the body he was allegedly not comfortable with during his skirmishes with his former deputy, Sunday Onyebuchi. But, did Abba throw in the towel in anger? Or was his resignation due to an “ailment” occasioned by frustration having failed to be anointed by the governor for the 2015 gubernatorial poll? This question arises, following insinuations that the governor might have promised Abba, as well as the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Eugene Odo of the party’s ticket. The theory of disappointed gained currency when Abba re-surfaced in Enugu during the party’s screening exercise putting to rest that he was down with sickness. On another hand, the battle for supremacy between the loyalists of Chime and supporters of Ekweremadu had escalated to the extent of splitting the state chapter into two distinct camps. A former Managing Director of the state Housing Corporation, Ikeje Asogwa is leading the Chime faction, while the Ekweremadu group, which seems to be in a majority is led by the Acting state chairman of the party, Elder David Aja. The President General of the Jonathan Support Group, Enugu State chapter, Chief Paul Anikwe, who was among other leading politicians that reacted to the conduct of the ward congress, had described it as one of the best elections ever held in the state in recent times, claiming that it complied with the PDP stipulated guidelines and witnessed a large turn-out of party faithful. Another PDP leader in the state, Group Captain Joe Orji (retd), while commenting on the exercise The last straw that reportedly broke the camel’s back in the camp of the governor was the visit of the nation’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan to Enugu, last Month. Ekweremadu had accompanied her to a cleric and founder of Adoration Ministry, Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka. It was observed that the visit was a boost to Ekweremadu’s camp as Governor Chime only sent his deputy to the adoration ground. Again, the successful conduct of the Local Government Congress by the PDP to elect national delegates for the presidential primary election, was another breakthrough by the Ekweremadu camp, as it got 17 ad-hoc delegates from the 17 Local Government Areas of the state. The acting state chairman of the party, Elder Aja and the five-man Local Government Congress Committee from the PDP headquarters, Abuja, supervised congress. The other members of the body included Gabe Igboko, a lawyer, who was the chairman, Alhaji Kabiru Bala Maitama, Honourable Lawal Mammadu, Chief Olumide Olusuyi and Rose Confidence Alozie. From all indications, the pro-Ekweremadu camp apperas to have taken over the control of the state PDP structure with Elder Aja as chairman. Based on this assumption, if there is any governorship aspirant who is apparently favoured, it is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Works , Ayogu Eze, who had consistently promised to resist any form of imposition of candidates. Speaking on the developments in the state PDP, he said: “What is going on in Enugu State is a revolution of sort. My administration will be centered on job creation. There is no way for imposition of candidates in the state. My regime will be all-inclusive.” Senator Eze, who represents Enugu North Senatorial Zone in the Senate, it will be recalled, kicked against the consensus arrangement by the Chime faction of the PDP that produced Honourable Ugwuanyi, insisting that there should be a level-playing field for all the aspirants at the party’s primaries. Already, some PDP leaders in the state, including Jim Nwobodo, former PDP national chairman, Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo and Chief Dubem Onyia, have formed a coalition with the deputy Senate President, Ekweremadu and Senator Eze with a view to ensuring a free and fair contest. While Elder Ajah (Acting Chairman of PDP) was with the Senator Bassey Henshaw led PDP screening committee to grill senatorial and other aspirants at the state PDP secretariat, Ikeje Asogwu who was appointed by Governor Chime’s group as the PDP state chairman, was seen sitting at a distance from the panel. However, for Chime and his supporters, it appears the game is not over, when on Thursday he further pushed his senatorial campaign by appearing before the PDP Screening Committee in Enugu, contrary to an initial speculation that he was opened talks with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Answering questions from reporters shortly after his screening, Chime said he has a lot of confidence in the committee, saying the PDP remained the platform he would realise his senatorial dream. On the occasion, Senator Henshaw had after his remark, turned to Elder Ajah, who stood by his side, asking him to take them to the next direction. The committee chairman had also explained that their courtesy call to Governor Chime at Government House was in line with the PDP guideline that they should visit governor who is a member of their party. The members subsequently drove out with the state PDP chairman, Ajah, to an undisclosed place before returning to the PDP state secretariat at Chime Lane, Enugu, while the party’s screening exercise was under tight security. Chime makes U-turn on senate ambition Posted by: Our Reporter in Politics 2 days ago ENUGU State Governor, Sullivan Chime, is not giving up on his senate ambition, sources have informed. The governor, who has been in a running battle with the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, over the control of party structures in the state, had allegedly jettisoned his ambition to represent Enugu West zone in the senate in line with an agreement reached with the Ekweremadu camp, who have taken control of the state PDP. But just a few weeks after this truce was reached, sources revealed that the governor has made a U-turn and has vowed to contest the senate seat currently occupied by Ekweremadu. |
Nigeria: Enugu Primary Without Rancour 1 December 2014 , By Emmanuel Nzomiwu, Source: Independent (Lagos) Enugu Despite the litigations trailing the November 1 ward congresses of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, the party held a hitch-free House of Assembly primary election on Saturday to elect candidates for the 24 constituencies in the state. It was reliably gathered that the hitch-free exercise was made possible by the peace accord brokered between Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and Governor Sullivan Chime, whose political rivalry had polarised the party. Preliminary results obtained by our correspondent showed that a serving lawmaker, Tony Ogidi, emerged as the PDP candidate for Igbo-Eze North Constituency 2, while Ethel Ugwuanyi emerged for Igbo-Eze North Constituency 1. Two serving lawmakers, Chinedu Nwamba and Nkechi Omeje Ogbu, were returned unopposed as for Nsukka East and Nsukka West constituencies respectively. Reports from Aninri Constituency also indicated that the serving lawmaker, Mathias Ekweremadu was returned as the candidate for the constituency. An Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) official, Hyacinth Nwauba, who monitored the exercise at Enugu North, said it was transparent, well coordinated and peaceful. http://m.allafrica.com/stories/201412010082.html/ |
November 30 An Enugu based pressure group, the Enugu Rescue Group, ERG, has disagreed with the Administrator of Ezeagu North Development Area, Mr. Okwudili Onuorah over his claim in a national daily that Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s Ikeoha Foundation Free Eye Treatment Project was recently attacked and disrupted in Ezeagu because of unlawful assembly and absence of eye specialists to carry out the project. The group made its stand known in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Martin Okenwa and made available to newsmen in Enugu on Sunday, describing Hon. Onuorah’s claims as a “fallacious attempt to justify the unjustifiable.” The ERG said: “Our diligent findings show that there is no element of truth in the claims by the Administrator of Ezeagu North Development Area whom allegedly colluded with his Ezeagu South Development Area counterpart, Mr. Chukwudi Ezinwa, to lead the attack by thugs on the philanthropic gesture, which left many people seriously wounded and medical equipment and medications worth millions of Naira destroyed. “First, the medical outreach by the Ikeoha Foundation was in conjunction with the Community Eye Savers, a duly registered non-governmental organisation with fully qualified and duly certified medical professionals who did not need any special approval from the Ministry of Health to carry out their professional and organisational duties. The team comprised of five Doctors of Optometry, OD, and three nurses, including Dr. Uzowuru O.B, OD; Dr Davidson Woko, OD; Dr Chidinma Ugwa, OD; Dr Godswill Ofoegbu, OD; and Dr Uchenna Efughi, OD”. The ERG also faulted the claim by Mr. Okwudili that security reports available to him “showed that supporters of Senator Ike Ekweremadu had converged on the premises of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church Oghe within the Ezeagu North Development Centre for an unlawful assembly”. The group observed: “For us, this is a very remorseless remark intended to add salt to a bad injury. Members of the medical team were simply exercising their fundamental right of lawful and peaceful assembly having been cleared by the Commissioner of Police to hold the medical outreach. But on being told that the CP had cleared the team, Okwudili Onuora, was alleged to have retorted to the medical team: ‘To hell with you and your CP’”. “And assuming that the medical mission did not come with the CP’s approval and that the team was to be barred from continuing with the medical outreach, which had successfully held in three other LGAs, whose duty would it be to enforce the order: the police or thugs?” the group queried. They called on the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State, to hasten efforts to apprehend the alleged culprits. “It is unfortunate that the cowards have the effrontery to issue falsehoods even while on the run, but we believe that with more commitment on the path of the police, they can easily be apprehended to face the wrath of the law”, the ERG emphasised. |

Chime Officials swindle aspirant. In the story below involving Commissioner Chijioke Agu and Mrs. Oby Nwofor took the money, quoting that they would work through Jide, Chine's brother. Now that the deal has failed, and the maga is threatening he'll and brimstone, the deal broke when he brazenly confronted Jide who promptly called Police on Chijioke, apparently a face-saving measure. Now, all these are in the open because the ticket did not succeed. For Ugwuanyi, the anointed guber candidate, it was reported in Guardian and Leadership that he spent over N800million on house gift and supporting an executive to buy an ocean liner. Read. Chime’s peace with cudgel in hand on november 30, 2014 at 12:23 am in politics "What agreements? Is that the Enugu West senatorial seat should be zoned from Greater Awgu to Udi/Ezeagu to bring it closer home for his grab? Is it that the Udi/Ezeagu House of Reps seat must leave Ezeagu to Udi (his home) so that his son-in-law (husband of his first daughter) could grab it, while Ezeagu people go empty-handed like Aaron? Is it that the Enugu East senatorial seat must be dashed to his former Chief of Staff and his clan’s sister married to Nkanu man, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo? Or is it his efforts to replace the House of Reps member representing Enugu South/North (Hon. Ofor Chukwuegbo) with his cousin, Chime Oji? Is it about his design to replace Hon. Kingsley Ebenyi of Enugu East/Isiuzo Federal Constituency with his brother-in-law, Prince Cornelius Nnaji." Read in full: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/chimes-peace-cudgel-hand/ |
Eventual outcome of today's primaries: All contestants not from Chime side failed. It's jubilation galore for Chime camp. Someone commented "Heard all the people under Ikeoha were crying and calling him bad names for betraying them" |
Likely there will be a stalemate today. An issue just cropped up: After last night's agreement for both sides to cease fire under the agreement that all first-timers to the State Assembly should be returned, this morning, Sullivan's camp is insisting on the use of their own delegates. Most people are bewildered asking how can a list of delegates not known by the Party be used for a valid election. For now, we are in high sun and no way yet. They have taken word back to Chime that it is rather a silly move that will not benefit his people he wanted back because it could be challenged successfully. But his issue is lack of trust, even though he has been fully assured that his people will be returned. If he doesn't see reason, maybe the voting will go ahead, but the dropped candidates are grinning and waiting for the mistake to be made. Otherwise, everything is calm. More later... |
Enugu 2015 and Chime’s Game 29 Nov 2014 "The consensus arrangement imposed on the party and the aspirants was described as one of the greatest mistakes of Chime’s end game. Not only has the decision destroyed the unity of the party in the state, it created a lot of enemies for the governor who was already at loggerheads with the National Assembly members led by the Deputy President of the Senate." http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/enugu-2015-and-chime-s-game/195291/ |
Nice to hear from you and I'm happy to know you are well. We will survive it |
Meeting jus ended about tomorrow's primary and the rule has been given "all first timers to the State Assembly to go back". Broda, see na. No measure, no yardstick, perform or not, know what your doing or not, your people agree or not. In Awgu, the people of Mbanabor would prefer to die than have Udo Okoye back. In our Ezeagu, Cecilia, em, em, ok o Give it a name broda, but it can never be called democracy. Chime, Chime, Chime! How many times did I call that name? Hmmmm... |
Broda, True, I am so happi u passed by. See na wot they have reduced us to -talking to ourselves; indication of early set on of madness, eh But real bad things are happening in our State broda |

Update on the latest truce between the two BIG men. At the last meeting at the Villa, Sullivan was told to go back and make Enugu peaceful. He is to take over the Party structure after allowing the Senator in contention to retain his seat. So, under the euphoria that the Party structure is now under him, Chime has started to anoint candidates for the State House of Assembly. For instance in Enugu South Local Government, an erstwhile Party loyalist and former council boss, Sam Ngene alias anointed David, who enjoys enormous followership in the LGA, has been told to shelve his ambition to go to the State's Assembly. In his place is a Lagos based lawyer, Barr Okenwa son of another former council boss, Hon Emma Okenwa. Anointed David feels betrayed and in tears swore to contest on another platform. Hon Theresa Egbo who currently occupies the seat was pointedly told by Chime to go home and look after her household. More crazy anointing on the way. I will be updating you as it happens. But the question is, will Chime's wishes come true? Especially in the light of the fact that the entire delegate list is still not under his control? Time shall tell; in just a matter of 48hrs we shall see. |

http://m.allafrica.com/stories/201411271199.html/ Chime Mops Up Vanguard in Enugu 27 November 2014 , Source: Vanguard ENUGU--Vanguard newspaper was missing from the newsstands in Enugu yesterday following the blanket purchase of yesterday's edition of the newspaper meant for circulation in the Coal City State. The entire stock of the newspaper meant for circulation in the city were bought allegedly by alleged agents of the state government. The action of the authorities in the state was apparently linked to a news feature published yesterday entitled, Enugu 2015: The debacle of parallel leadership. The story was a focus on the recent travails of the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led by Governor Sullivan Chime arising from that faction's failure to participate in the November 1, 2014 ward congresses of the party organised by the Elder David Aja-led leadership of the party. The development in the party, according to the feature piece has led to doubts on the prospects of 2015 election aspirants affiliated to the governor. The seemingly provocative article which was a review of the developments in the state was, however, stopped from mass circulation with the forced purchase of the edition from the newspaper distributors. Besides yesterday, the newspaper was also forced from the newsstands last Friday, November 21, 2014 which reported stories on Enugu and had a feature, Governors also cry. The practice of buying up copies of Vanguard with reports perceived not to be favourable to the authorities in the state has been a recurring practise which has brought agony to many newspaper readers in the state. Yesterday, some readers who brought the newspaper from outside the state were able to make Xeroxed copies of the feature story which sold for as much as N300 in some places in the state capital. A copy of the newspaper where it was seen sold in some cases for as much as N1,000.00. |
Meanwhile, these guys sharpaly dubbed my heading http://www.042reports.com/governor-chimes-political-fortune-final-days/ Home | Radio Stations | Forum Login Now and Join others in Our Forum Topics Governor Chime’s Political Fortune In Final Days Posted by Admin in POLITICS on November 13, 2014 0 0 Google +0 From the report getting to us there was another twist to the crisis rocking the enugu State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Thursday when an enugu High Court restrained the party from using or acting on the list or names purporting to be the list of delegates elected during the recent ward and local government congresses, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit on the matter. The enugu High Court order is coming barely two weeks after an earlier order by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja that restrained the national leadership of the party from tampering with the result of the November 1, 2014 ward congresses conducted by the Elder David Aja-led State Executive Committee of the party in enugu State. The order is yet to be vacated. Ruling on a suit filed by one Charles Okafor challenging the validity of the alleged congress, the enugu High Court presided over by the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Innocent Umezuluike, also ordered an accelerated hearing of the substantive suit, citing the urgency of the matter. It further granted the plaintiff seven days within which to file his statement of claim and serve same on the defendant (PDP) and granted the defendant fourteen days to file its statement of defence and serve same on the plaintiff. The matter was adjourned to 8th December, 2014 for definite hearing. It would be recalled that the Acting State Chairman of the party, Edler David Aja had said that the ward congress was conducted “peacefully” in enugu State and proceeded to publish the names of the three-m an delegates elected during the congresses held in 260 wards in the state. But the Chairman of Governor Sullivan Chime faction, Chief Ikeje Asogwa had countered the Acting Chairman’s claim, saying that the congress never held in enugu due to the non-arrival of members of the electoral panel and materials from Abuja on the scheduled date. The two conflicting orders of the Abuja and enugu courts, which are said to have equal jurisdiction, has created further confusion in the party and the national leadership is expected to decide on the way forward. But the development has confirmed the collapse of the truce brokered by President Goodluck Jonathan between the warring parties. It has further confirmed the speculation that Governor Chime and his men may move to another party to conduct the 2015 elections since the order may have been intended to prevent the PDP from fielding any candidate in enugu State. But some Party stalwarts who reacted to the fresh court order said that the intention of the plaintiff might not be realized as the interim injunction would not last beyond 14 days We look forward to see what happens next. |

Na today? They been doing dat for ages. I had actually thought they had got tired. The article below portrays the situation in Enugu where Chime has completely lost out. But they think they can hide it. Its all over the place. Beer parlours sell more drinks nowadays in Enugu due to gists about Chime and his former Chief of Staff Ifeoma Nwobodo. The can continue wasting public funds trying to hide open facts from Enugu people, but someone should tell them that most readers have access to online verions. So it's an exercise in futility. Real shame of a governor. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/enugu-2015-debacle-parallel-leadership/ |
All in the beer parlour: http://247ureports.com/enugu-pdp-crisis-the-peoples-advice-to-gov-chime-by-ejenogwu-igwebike/ " From an elaborate street joint at Ogui New Layout comes one of the interesting suggestions to quell the political impasse. The young man claimed to be a political operative way back to the Ebeano time. His suggestion is that Gov. Chime should quit elective contest and return to his seat as the leader of Enugu State PDP. Cruising down to Otigba junction provides another strange advice to both Gov. Chime and DSP Ekweremadu. This young man was very passionate as he spoke about the two PDP leaders of Enugu State. He laid the blame of the problems of people surrounding the two leaders. He said that there were no issues between the two that it was the people around the peddling gossip that got them into this political mess." |
mej67:Actually, gist as monitored has it that she spends more time following Chime around and hanging around him to his chagrin b'cos she's really not needed in the meetings, but of course, nothing else to do. In the last meeting at the Villa where Chime was instructed to go home and ensure Enugu is peaceful, she was spotted hanging around Trascorp with no definite plan. Just busy shaking hands with Chime's security details, her former underlings because they have been briefed to distance her from Onyeishi. Love can suffocate, you know. But we have to leave that gist and focus on Enugu politics where just 2 days to go to ENHA primary, nobody knows which way to go. Absolutely nothing mege. Ok. The congress validly held is adequate. If you can leave it there I guess PDP shouldn't have qualms accepting results of a congress validly held. Pls Chime camp organise urselves. The group said in a statement signed by the Interim President Nebechi Ugo that the threats issued by undisclosed persons to Justice Raymond Ozoemena of the Enugu High Court that forced him to withdraw from further hearing of a matter relating to the leadership tussle in Enugu PDP, were the handwork of “political desperadoes who are hell bent on subverting justice and the rule of law in Enugu State.” So who dunnit eh ![]() Further... "It appears that some people are bent on returning Enugu to the dark days of impunity which the Chime administration has successfully steered the State away from for the past seven and a half years. Before long those Chime administrators that attacked Ezeagu medical mission will be pushed to the other side too. Lame team, lame action, lame reasoning. Downfall is a sure outcome for buffoonism |
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/enugu-2015-debacle-parallel-leadership/ "Only few weeks ago the projections of those who called the shots in Enugu State have been altered. By Francis Igata THE gloom of the Governor Sullivan Chime led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Enugu State was compounded on Monday after a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja upheld the ward congresses of the party held on November 1. More than 400 kilometers away in Enugu the same Monday, the camp was further deflated by the decision of an Enugu judge to withdraw from a case where the Chime camp was expecting a counter judgment from that in Abuja. The Chime faction lost out after its members boycotted the congress and the faction is now in contemplation whether to remain and fight within the PDP or to move out to another party and express its political prowess. A move towards the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA was said to be in contemplation but allegations of bad faith between both sides following an aborted transaction in 2011 when Governor Chime faced similar troubles is now said to be hindering progress in that direction."
