Health / Shaving Public Hair Increases Spread Of Sexually-transmitted Infections by ovyekuju(m): 9:27pm On Dec 07, 2016
People who shave, wax, or trim their pubic hair are at higher risk of sexually-transmitted infections (STIs), but less likely to get lice, a study suggested on Tuesday.

A survey of more than 7,500 Americans aged 18 to 65, found that pubic groomers had an 80 percent higher STI risk than people who leave their nether regions hairy.

For certain infections, including herpes and chlamydia, the risk was highest among those who groomed most frequently and “intensely”, the researchers found.

The study merely observed a correlation between grooming and STIs, and cannot conclude that one causes the other.

But the authors speculated that shaving or waxing may cause “microtears” in the skin, creating easy access for viruses.

Sharing tools such as razors may also be a risk, they said, citing a case of HIV transmission between brothers using the same blade.

“As a third possible explanation for our findings, individuals who groom may be more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviours than those who do not groom,” said the study published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Pubic hair grooming, it explained, “is correlated with an increased number of lifetime sexual partners and is viewed as a preparatory act to sexual engagement”.

For the research, 7,580 people completed a questionnaire on their intimate hair-control, sex lives and STI history.

Seventy-four percent of respondents were pubic hair groomers — 66 percent of men and 84 percent of women.

Foreign Affairs / Undocumented US Migrants Meet To Discuss Possibilities Of Trump Presidency by ovyekuju(m): 7:56pm On Dec 07, 2016
If I get deported, can my 18-year-old son take care of my youngest child? What should I do if an immigration agent knocks on my door? Do I have the right to a Spanish-speaking lawyer?

These were some of the questions raised by undocumented migrants who met recently at a community center to prepare for the worst after Donald Trump’s surprise November 8 presidential election victory.

The Republican, who launched his White House quest denouncing Mexican immigrants as “rapists” and drug traffickers and vowing to build a wall on the southern US border, has threatened to deport millions of undocumented migrants, starting with those with criminal records.

“We still have two months to get organized,” said Mexican-born Gonzalo Mercado, the director of the La Colmena community center who organized the event in Staten Island, New York’s most conservative borough.

“We don’t want to instill fear, but we must prepare for the worst because we don’t know what’s going to happen,” he told the group.

About 40 undocumented immigrants turned out for the late night meeting, anxious about what the future holds.

They are not alone. The Mexican consulate in New York has been flooded with requests for appointments from nationals seeking to legalize their migratory status.

The waiting list for an appointment at New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office is now four to five months long, despite the Democrat’s promise to fight for the rights of the city’s undocumented residents.

Cesar Vargas, a young lawyer who is himself undocumented, has drawn up an eight page emergency action plan for undocumented immigrants, which was handed out to the crowd at La Colmena.

The plan includes practical advice.

Celebrities / Why I Married Dele Giwa – Ita-giwa by ovyekuju(m): 7:23pm On Dec 07, 2016
A former presidential special adviser, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, on Wednesday disclosed that she fell in love and married Dele Giwa because of his Press Snaps column.

Dele Giwa, a former Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch magazine, was killed by a letter bomb on October 19, 1986.

Ita-Giwa, who spoke in a radio programme (Hit FM) in Calabar on Wednesday, said she became interested in journalistic write-ups as a result of the works of her mother, Beatrice Bassey-Ita and the likes of Peter Enahoro and Sam Amuka, among others.

She said that she got married to Dele Giwa just barely three weeks after first contact as a result of his intellectual prowess.

The former presidential adviser, who was responding to a question on her relationship with Dele Giwa, said that she followed him to his house on request on the first day that they met to know how he wrote his column.

Education / WAEC Registrar Seeks National Honours For Examiners by ovyekuju(m): 7:09pm On Dec 07, 2016
The West African Examinations Council has called of the Federal Government to consider examiners for national honours in appreciation of their contributions to the nation’s education development.

The council’s Registrar, Dr Iyi Uwadiae, made the call when he visited the Lagos Office of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

According to him, the examiners, remain one of the most critical components in the entire examination process and, therefore, deserve to be recognised.

Uwadiae, who is resident at the council’s headquarters in Ghana, added that he was aware that the stipend paid to the examiners was in no way comparable with the volume of job they do.

He said the task of marking examination scripts was also risky, but that they still weathered the storm.

“It is a statement of fact that the examiners, not only those in Nigeria, but of the entire member states, remain our backbone in the conduct of any of our examinations.

“We are aware that what we give them as stipends is nothing to write home about and we must admit that fact.

Sports / Victor Moses Wins Yet Another Award by ovyekuju(m): 11:21am On Dec 06, 2016
Chelsea’s Victor Moses has been named the English Premier League African Player of the Month of November by organisers New African Soccer, AfricanFootball.com reports.

The Super Eagles winger edged Kenya’s Victor Wanyama of Tottenham and fellow Nigerian Victor Anichebe of Sunderland to win a second straight award in two consecutive months.

Moses has flourished in a new right wing-back role under Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and has been instrumental in his team being top of the Premier League.

New African Soccer in a statement, congratulated the Nigeria winger but also mentioned the competitiveness of the November award, especially in the votes.

‘Victor Wanyama, also a one-time winner of the award, put up a strong showing and this was rightly justified, considering his role in Tottenham Hotspur’s early surge which made them the last to be beaten in the League. His move from Southampton was a positive one,” Tunde Adelakun, CEO of New African Soccer noted.

NYSC / Corpers Refuse Participation In Rivers Rerun Election by ovyekuju(m): 10:50am On Dec 06, 2016
Corp members are avoiding to participate in the legislative rerun election scheduled for Saturday in Rivers State.

Investigation revealed that corps members who are being contacted to serve as ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission are refusing to participate in the election because of fear of possible violence during the election.

A source who confided in our correspondent said that the corps members were not showing the usual enthusiasm to participate in the election because of the accusations and counter-accusation between the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike , and INEC.

The source said, “Corps members being contacted by INEC to participate in the Rivers rerun election are showing reluctance to serve in the election.

“A good number of them are afraid that there could be violence during the election, and these are young men and women who don’t want to get killed because of some election.”

When our correspondent contacted the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of INEC, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, he said that it was only the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers that could comment on that.

Reacting, the state REC, Mr. Aniedi Ikoiwak, said the job of corps members was voluntary, adding that those who did not want to work with INEC on election day were free to opt out.

Ikoiwak argued that some of the corps members’ parents might have told them not to take part in the rerun election, adding that such a situation would not affect the exercise on Saturday.

The state REC, however, pointed out that INEC would get more ad hoc workers from other government’s agencies if there was shortage in the number of corps members needed for the job on Saturday.

“From the beginning, the NYSC work is on a voluntary basis. We know that some of them might have been told by their parents not to be part of it (election).

“But if we have problem of shortage of manpower, we will complete them with workers from other government’s agencies and institutions,” he stressed.

Oyekanmi also agreed that most parents would be inclined to discourage their children from participating in the election because of what he described as the inflammatory comments by the Rivers State Government that plans had been perfected to rig the election.

Crime / Man Beats Up Policewoman In Lagos, Tears Her Uniform by ovyekuju(m): 4:37pm On Dec 05, 2016
A 32-year-old man, Adetokunbo Ashiru , who allegedly beat up a policewoman, was on Monday arraigned in an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused was docked on a three-count bordering on breach of peace and assault.

Ashiru, however, denied committing the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000.

The Magistrate, Mr A.A. Paul ordered that the accused should produce one surety as part of the bail condition.

Paul also ordered that the surety must be gainfully employed and also show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned till March 6, 2017.

The prosecutor, Insp. Uche Simon, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 12 at Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos.

Simon said that Ashiru assaulted Beatrice Akinsola, a policewoman by hitting her with his fist and pulling her uniform.

He alleged that the act prevented her from performing her lawful duty.

Simon said that the accused tore the uniform of the complainant and exposed her breast to the public.

The prosecutor said that Ashiru also took pictures of Akinsola after assaulting her.

The offences, he said, contravened Sections 57, 134 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Family / This Facebook Appeal Raisd Enough Money In 24 Hrs For Dying Mum's Wish For Baby by ovyekuju(m): 11:33pm On Dec 04, 2016
Strangers raised £2,500 in less than 24 hours through a Facebook appeal to grant a mum's dying wish.

Kirsty-Jade McCarron suffers from a terminal and rare disease which attacks her immune system.

She has always dreamed of taking her young daughter Skylar on a trip she will never forget.

Thanks to the kindness of a friend Kirsty-Jade was able to surprise the five-year-old with a trip to Disneyland Paris so she could meet the fairy-tale princesses she adores.

It may be one of the last trips the pair are able to go on, as Kirsty-Jade's condition is worsening.

Friend Dean Lewis decided to raise funds for the pair after finding out that Kirsty-Jade was considering selling off her possessions to pay for a holiday.

Dean told Lad Bible : "She asked me how much did I reckon the value of her car was.

"She said she was hoping to sell it and create memories with her daughter, Skylar, by visiting Disneyland Paris just once before she dies.

"To me this was it - I knew what I could do to bring at least some happiness to her and her daughter."

Dean wrote a Facebook post asking friends for donations, but didn't reveal the identity of the friend he was helping.

Within 24 hours he had raised enough cash - £2,500 in total - to send Kirsty-Jade and Skylar to Disneyland Paris in time for her fifth birthday.

Dean said: "After the funds were raised I called Kirsty to tell her what had happened.

"She burst into tears of joy. She couldn't believe it."

One of Skylar's biggest wishes was to meet Elsa from Frozen , so Dean bought a costume and arranged for a model to help him and Kirsty-Jade reveal the big news about their trip.

Kirsty-Jade wrote on Facebook: "Skylar truly is my hero and my inspiration and this for her will be magical. She will never forget this and neither will I."

Dean said the mum's condition is deteriorating, adding: "We don't know exactly how much time she's got left, but we know it's within a year or two as a maximum."

TV/Movies / X Factor Studios To Be Demolished Following Tonight's Live Semi Final by ovyekuju(m): 10:51pm On Dec 04, 2016
The home of X Factor is set to be demolished.

Following tonight's live semi final, Fountain Studios in Wembley will close its doors for the last time.

ITV bosses have confirmed that the iconic building is going to be knocked down and transformed into new homes instead after being sold for £16 million to a property developer.

Commenting on the news, host Dermot O'Leary opened up about the significant role the studios had played in his life.

He said: "I started here, I did my first ever pilot here when I was still a runner. I got a screen test and the pilot ended up being here.

"It was my first ever hosting job so it holds a great poignancy and big significance to me."

Thames Television managing director Richard Holloway also admitted he was upset with the decision.

He explained: "It's a sad day because it's a TV studio which is closing down and will not be replaced.

"Purpose built TV studios are difficult to find."

It opened its doors as a back in 1928 and became Britain's first purpose built studios.

During the 1960s and 1970s, it hosted an array of historic television shows, including On The Buses and Upstairs, Downstairs.

Today, Fountain Studios is home to an array of small screen favourites, including Britain’s Got Talent, The Voice UK, Play To The Whistle, The Cube and All Star Mr & Mrs.

However, tonight's live X Factor semi final, following by the Xtra Factor, will mark the last time fans have the opportunity to get a glimpse of the iconic building.

Foreign Affairs / Trump To Appoint Famous Neuro-surgeon Ben Carson As Housing Secretary by ovyekuju(m): 9:40am On Nov 23, 2016
Donald Trump’s one-time presidential rival, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, appeared to be a cabinet shoo-in Tuesday after both men mentioned his possible Housing and Urban Development appointment.

“I am seriously considering Dr. Ben Carson as the head of HUD. I’ve gotten to know him well–he’s a greatly talented person who loves people!” the president-elect said on Twitter.

Carson himself indicated on Fox News that the HUD position “was one of the offers that’s on the table.”

“Our inner cities are in terrible shape and they definitely need some real attention,” he told the broadcaster, adding that he had been interested in housing for a long time.

Carson quit the presidential race in March, only to endorse Trump one week later.

Trump similarly telegraphed his support for General James Mattis as a potential secretary of defense on Twitter over the weekend.

“General James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis, who is being considered for Secretary of Defense, was very impressive yesterday. A true General’s General!” Trump wrote Sunday.

On Tuesday, The New York Times quoted the real estate tycoon as saying he was still “seriously considering” Mattis for the job.

Trump is in the process of forming his cabinet, with a stream of would-be appointees making the pilgrimage to his Manhattan tower and traveling to New Jersey over the weekend where they met the president-elect at his golf club.

Trump’s picks so far include ultra-conservative Senator Jeff Sessions as attorney general, hawkish congressman Mike Pompeo as CIA director and retired lieutenant general Michael Flynn as his national security adviser.

Steve Bannon, seen as an ideologue of the ultra-conservative alt-right movement, was named as chief strategist, while Reince Priebus, the head of the Republican National Committee, was named White House chief of staff.

Foreign Affairs / US Elections: Trump Heads To Court by ovyekuju(m): 9:08pm On Nov 08, 2016
In a sign that the legal team for the Trump campaign is aggressively laying the groundwork for potential legal challenges, big and small lawyers have gone to state court in Nevada in an early vote dispute.

They are suing Joe P. Gloria, the Clark County registrar of voters, over a decision they allege he made to keep polling locations open “two hours beyond the designated closing time.”

The lawsuit targets polling places in the greater Las Vegas area that have larger minority voting precincts.

Dan Kulin, a spokesperson for the county, told CNN that no early voting stations extended their closing times. They did, however, process voters who were in line at closing time to allow as many people to vote as possible.

In legal briefs filed Monday night, Trump lawyers are asking for an order to have the pertinent early vote ballots not to be “co-mingled or interspersed” with other ballots.

“From the polling, it appears that Nevada is so close that the Trump campaign thinks it’s worth challenging any violation in voting protocol.

Politics / BREAKING: Fayose Visits Fani-kayode In EFCC Custody by ovyekuju(m): 7:18pm On Nov 08, 2016
The Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, Tuesday said the continued detention of these former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani Kayode by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and described his continued detention was an act of vendetta.

Speaking with newsmen after his visit, the governor called on the federal government to stop playing god and allow the former minister to enjoy bail earlier granted to him by the court.

The governor questioned the rationale behind the former ministers continued detention since the EFCC has resolved to arraign him on November 10.

“The continued detention of the former minister was to demoralize him but unfortunately, the man was in high spirit when I met him.

“He is not worried, after all, a man must be brave. We share prayer together that this persecution will come to pass and it will surely come to pass.

“I am here to visit and identify my friend, Chief Fani-kayode. I came into Abuja yesterday and I am being my brother’s keeper, and I felt that within the 24 hours that I will spend in Abuja I have to visit him.

“I met him in an office. They brought him in an office to see me. He is in good spirit. But when you state, there are two different issues. If you say state of mind, he is in good spirit. But I don’t have accept to where he sleeps and the condition in which he is kept but speaking with, he is in good spirit. The governor hinted that former Minister would be charged to court on November 10.

He said “it is obvious that the commission has made up their mind on charge him on the November 10. And it shows that they have made up their mind even before I visited him. He has been granted bail before and I would have expected them to allow him to go and come back since he didn’t run away. So I just believe that this over zealousness will cease and get better.”

On concerns over recent spates of high profile visits to the anti-graft facility he said "these people are only accused. An accused person are (sic) at liberty to be visited even people convicted are to be visited. They are human beings it is there right to be visited.

“Are you saying that people should be locked away without access to family and friends that would be abuse to human rights. There is a difference between being accused and found guilty. After from that even if you are found guilty people still have a right to visit you.”

TV/Movies / Prince Harry Lambasts Press Over Unfair Coverage Of New Girlfriend Meghan Markle by ovyekuju(m): 7:03pm On Nov 08, 2016
Remember Rachel Zane in popular TV series Suits? She has a boyfriend in real life whose name is not Mike.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry only just confirmed they are dating but according to Prince Harry the media coverage of their relationship has been crazy.

Prince Harry has attacked the “racial undertones” of press coverage of his girlfriend Meghan Markle in an extraordinary statement in which he warns that he fears for her safety.

The prince said “a line has been crossed” in reporting of his relationship with the 35 year old American actress.

Speculation of their relationship came weeks ago after the duo were spotted hanging out together. They were also spotted wearing what appears to be matching bracelets. Since then, there has been massive press coverage by UK media of the actress's every move, and what the Prince has described as 'harassment and abuse.'

“Some of this has been very public,” his spokesman said in a statement. “The smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”

"Prince Harry is worried about Ms Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her,” it said. “It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms Markle should be subjected to such a storm.

The statement confirms for the first time that the pair are in a relationship.

Wonder what Mike and Harvey or even Donna would have done?

Crime / Boy Murders His Mom, Takes Selfie With Her Severed Head by ovyekuju(m): 6:41pm On Nov 08, 2016
A man who stabbed his mother, dismembered her body with a power saw and then took a selfie with her severed head has been found guilty of murder.

Bronx man Bahsid McLean, 26, has been convicted of second-degree murder and unlawful dissection of a human being, prosecutors said on Monday.

The court heard how he killed his mother, Tanya Byrd, 52, inside their Morrisania apartment on February 26, 2013.

McLean stabbed the home health aide in the neck, after she told him he was a bad father.

Police say he then called them to report his dead mom missing.

'If you can kill somebody, you should be able to cut them up too,' McLean told authorities, in a video played in court. 'If you can't do that, if don't have the stomach to cut them up, then you're a coward.'

'The defendant fatally stabbed his mother and then chillingly took photos with her mutilated corpse,' Bronx DA Darcel Clark said, the New York Daily News reports.

After McLean killed his mother he then went to a hardware store and bought a power saw to carve up her body, police said.

He paused to take a smirking selfie with her dismembered head before stuffing her remains into bin bags. Her dismembered corpse was found in the bin bags inside four different suitcases that had been dumped around the neighborhood, and police later discovered the smiling selfie on McLean's phone.

He will be sentenced on December 5 and faces up to 25 years in jail.

Politics / NNPC Explains Increase In Petrol Pump Price by ovyekuju(m): 9:05pm On Nov 07, 2016
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has provided a justification for its recent adjustment of petrol pump price at its retail outlets.

The corporation also denied ever meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari to lobby for his approval of an increase in petrol pump prices.

According to a statement from the corporation’s Group General Manager Public Affairs, Mallam Garba Deen Muhammad, on Monday in Abuja, the NNPC said there was no time its management met with Buhari to push for a hike in the pump price of petrol from its current N145 to N150 per litre.

You will recall we earlier informed you Nigeria's Minister for Petroleum faulted the prince increase. Foreign Affairs / US Election: Fear Of Violence Grips Americans As Final Day Draws Nigh by ovyekuju(m): 4:09pm On Nov 06, 2016
There are concerns of chaos across cities and suburbs in the United States as voters go to pollthis Tuesday to elect the next president of the world’s most powerful country in a tight race dogged by unprecedented controversies in America’s political history.

The Democratic Party candidate, Hillary Clinton, and the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, are running neck and neck in most battleground states.

The fears that some individuals may hang around polling stations with guns to intimidate voters in states with open carry laws became widespread, when militia groups wearing camouflage were seen in Georgia performing a rifle practice, hand-to-hand combat training and getting together for a campaign rally for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Trump had alleged during this campaign cycle that the election may be rigged, but the allegation has been described as lacking in substance by experts.

According to reports, the militia groups mobilized in readiness for the possibility of a stolen election this Tuesday and a Clinton win.

But what may be driving the militia to stage civil unrest in case Clinton wins the November 8election is the fear that their second amendment—the right to carry gun— may be taken away.

“They say they won’t fire the first shot, but they’re not planning to leave their guns at home, either,” New York Post reported.

Chris Hill, the leader of the Three Percent Security Force militia has told members of his group across the United States to monitor voting sites for signs of fraud.

“This is the last chance to save America from ruin,” Hill said. “I’m surprised I was able to survive or suffer through eight years of Obama without literally going insane, but Hillary is going to be more of the same,” Hill said.

Already, a number of Trump supporters have been spurred by the GOP candidate’s hate speeches to tweet negative words against Clinton as the most divisive election period nears conclusion.

Amdist the war game, courts have been intervening in some states to calm the nerve and protect citizens ahead of the Election Day.

In Ohio, where the Democratic Party took its case to court over voter intimidation, a federal court judge ordered a restrain against Donald Trump campaign and Republican supporter, Roger Stone, the leader of Stop the Steal, a campaign group working for the Republican.

The US District Court for the Northern District of Ohio in a ruling on Friday by Judge James Gwin warned against “Hindering or delaying a voter or prospective voter from reaching or leaving the polling place.”

It also warned against participating in “unauthorized ‘poll watching'” activities, including “challenging or questioning voters or prospective voters about their eligibility to vote, or training, organizing, or directing others to do the same” and “interrogating, admonishing, interfering with, or verbally harassing voters or prospective voters.”

The ruling also barred campaigns and individuals from inquiring from voters “under the guise of the purported ‘exit polling’ or ‘citizen journalist’ operations organized and encouraged by Defendants Stone and Stop the Steal.”

According to the ruling anyone found to be engaged in intimidation or harassment inside or near Ohio polling places would face contempt of court charges.

However, the Trump campaign filed an appeal against the ruling yesterday morning at the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

Foreign Affairs / US Elections: Donald Trump Trying To Use 'mind Readers' To Win Elections by ovyekuju(m): 6:52pm On Nov 05, 2016
In a non-descript office in central London, young analytical minds are hard at work crunching thousands of pieces of data about every American adult.

They are Donald Trump's secret political weapon. His campaign paid more than $5 million in September alone to Cambridge Analytica, which claims it can convince voters to back him by tailoring Trump's political ads to their personalities.

Their approach combines micro-targeting, already in use in political campaigning, with psychological profiling. The company gathers up to 5,000 pieces of data about a potential voter to create a psychological profile, then adapts political ads to his or her personality and beliefs.

Using a survey usually placed on social media, the company invites users to take a personality test. The results of that test help the company group people under personality types measuring openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism.

Data-crunchers then combine individuals' personalities with their voting history, where they shop, what they buy -- even what they watch on television.

The personality test doesn't indicate that this is the purpose of the test, so it's likely those who fill it out are unaware of how it will be matched with other data freely available or purchasable from cable and credit card companies.

With that, according to Cambridge Analytica CEO Alexander Nix, they know the best way to target the individual and what message to use.

"We can then marry this data with cookies to serve people (ads) though social media or digitally, or we can match these data to television viewing data so we can understand where the audiences are that we're interested in, what programs they're watching, and we can then serve them messages during those shows," he explained.

The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

The company does not release examples of ads it's produced for an ongoing campaign, but it did provide CNN with examples from its work for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz when he was challenging Trump in the GOP presidential primaries.

Foreign Affairs / 'i'm Not Scared Of Jail, I've Been There' - Jacob Zuma by ovyekuju(m): 6:36pm On Nov 05, 2016
Embattled South African President Jacob Zuma put on a brave face Saturday at his first public appearance since the release of fresh evidence of alleged corruption at the top of the ANC government.

“I have spent a lot of time in jail. I am not scared of jail, I have been there,” said Zuma, who under apartheid was jailed for 10 years on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela.

During a speech to hundreds of Africa National Congress supporters in Dumbe, a small town in his Kwazulu-Natal province, Zuma accused the opposition of “using the courts to scare the ANC.

“We are not going to be intimidated,” he said.

On Wednesday, South Africa’s anti-corruption watchdog called for prosecutors to investigate alleged criminal activity as it released a report on Zuma that fuelled further calls, some from within the ANC, for the president to resign.

Religion / There Will Never Be Female Catholic Priests, Says Pope Francis by ovyekuju(m): 3:02pm On Nov 02, 2016
Pope Francis has said that he believes the Roman Catholic Church’s ban on women becoming priests is forever and will never be changed.

He was speaking aboard a plane taking him back to Rome from Sweden, in the freewheeling news conference with reporters that has become a tradition of his return flights from trips abroad.

A Swedish female reporter noted that the head of the Lutheran Church who welcomed him in Sweden was a woman, and then asked if he thought the Catholic Church could allow women to be ordained as ministers in coming decades.

“St. Pope John Paul II had the last clear word on this and it stands, this stands,” Francis said.

Francis was referring to a 1994 document by Pope John Paul that closed the door on a female priesthood. The Vatican says this teaching is an infallible part of Catholic tradition.

The reporter then pressed the pope, asking: “But forever, forever? Never, never?

Francis responded: “If we read carefully the declaration by St. John Paul II, it is going in that direction.”

Francis has previously said that the door to women’s ordination is closed, but proponents of a female priesthood are hoping that a future pope might overturn the decision, particularly because of the shortage of priests around the world.

The Catholic Church teaches that women cannot be ordained priests because Jesus willingly chose only men as his apostles.

Those calling for women priests say he was only following the norms of his time. In August, Francis set up a commission to study the role of women deacons in early Christianity, raising hopes among equality campaigners that women could one day have a greater say in the 1.2 billion-member Church. Deacons, like priests, are ordained ministers and must be men. They cannot celebrate Mass, the Catholic Church’s central rite, but they are allowed to preach and teach in the name of the Church, and to baptize and conduct wake and funeral services. The Church barred women from becoming deacons centuries ago. Scholars debate the precise role of women deacons in the early Church. Some say they were ordained to minister only to other women, for instance in baptismal immersion rites. Others believe they were on a par with male deacons.

Politics / Dasuki To Call On Former President Jonathan As Witness by ovyekuju(m): 12:55pm On Oct 31, 2016
Former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki, who is being prosecuted for alleged corruption, wants former president Goodluck Jonathan to be his witness, the Nation reports.

Dasuki is facing trial for alleged mismanagement of $2.1 billion arms funds.

The newspaper cited Dasuki's lawyer, Mr Ahmed Raji (SAN) to have said that the ex-NSA wants Jonathan to testify in court.

"It will be desirable for Jonathan to testify for the ex-NSA. It will throw greater light into grey areas. And it will serve the interest of Justice," Raji was quoted as saying.

According to another source believed to be privy to the matter, Dasuki's defence team is banking on Jonathan's testimony and has secured the ex-president's consent.

The source said: "All is set for the defence of Dasuki, who is still insisting on an open trial to let Nigerians know the beneficiaries of the arms cash.

"One of those who may testify is ex-President Goodluck Jonathan whose remarks in London appeared to be the first phase of the war chest of the ex-NSA.

In his words, “During my first year in office, I did not travel for once abroad, but as it is in Plateau State today, your governor has travelled abroad so many times all in the name of bringing in investors. Where are the investors?.

Politics / Nigerian Security Officials Raping, Sexually Exploiting Women, Girls Displaced by ovyekuju(m): 11:54am On Oct 31, 2016
Government officials and other authorities in Nigeria have raped and sexually exploited women and girls displaced by the conflict with Boko Haram, Human Rights Watch said Monday.

The rights group said in a statement that the government was not doing enough to protect displaced women and girls and ensure that they have access to basic rights and services or to sanction the abusers, who include camp leaders, vigilante groups, policemen, and soldiers.

Human Rights Watch said in July, it documented sexual abuse, including rape and exploitation, of 43 women and girls living in seven internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The victims had been displaced from several Borno towns and villages, including Abadam, Bama, Baga, Damasak, Dikwa, Gamboru Ngala, Gwoza, Kukawa, and Walassa. In some cases, the victims had arrived in the under-served Maiduguri camps, where their movement is severely restricted after spending months in military screening camps.

“It is bad enough that these women and girls are not getting much-needed support for the horrific trauma they suffered at the hands of Boko Haram,” said Mausi Segun, senior Nigeria researcher at Human Rights Watch. “It is disgraceful and outrageous that people who should protect these women and girls are attacking and abusing them.”

Four of the victims told Human Rights Watch that they were drugged and raped, while 37 were coerced into sex through false marriage promises and material and financial assistance.

Many of those coerced into sex said they were abandoned after they became pregnant. They and their children have suffered discrimination, abuse, and stigmatization from other camp residents. Eight of the victims said they were previously abducted by Boko Haram fighters and forced into marriage before they escaped to Maiduguri, the group said.

Women and girls abused by members of the security forces and vigilante groups – civilian self-defense groups working with government forces in their fight against Boko Haram – told Human Rights Watch they feel powerless and fear retaliation if they report the abuse.

A 17-year-old girl said that just over a year after she fled the frequent Boko Haram attacks in Dikwa, a town 56 miles west of Maiduguri, a policeman approached her for “friendship” in the camp, and then he raped her.

Politics / Borno Governor Exposes Schemes Of North-eastern Governors by ovyekuju(m): 9:06am On Oct 30, 2016
Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, has said some of his colleagues in the North-east were making false claims about the situation of internally displaced persons and destruction wrecked by Boko Haram insurgents in their states.

Mr. Shettima said the governors were exaggerating the impact of the insurgency in their domains to rake in donations from philanthropists and international donor agencies.

He spoke on Friday in Government House, Maiduguri when he hosted a delegation of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), led by its deputy regional director for West and East Africa, Beatrice Mutali.

The governor said his state was the epicenter of the insurgency and suffered over 80 percent of the destruction by Boko Haram.

He said he was worried that some sister states not much touched by the insurgency were allegedly lying to draw donors’ attention.

This allegation came in the wake of the passage of a bill by the National Assembly for the establishment of the Northeast Development Commission (NDC).

The commission is expected to coordinate the rehabilitation of communities in the region devastated by the insurgency and provision of support for the victims.

Deliberation of the bill at the National Assembly featured a heated debate and other intrigues over the location of the headquarters of the proposed commission, before Maiduguri, the Borno State capital was eventually agreed on.

Ahead of the takeoff of the commission, interest groups in the region have also started jostling for positions on its board with a view to potentially influencing its activities in the areas of determination of projects and disbursement of funds.

Expressing his gratitude to the UN system for its interventions, Mr. Shettima said the state had not been getting its fair share of the supports coming from the international donor agencies because of bogus claims he said were being made by other states.

“We truly appreciate your efforts. But we really need you to step up your activities in the state because Borno, most sadly, is the nerve center of Boko Haram; but when it comes to goodies, you will be seeing states that suffer the least, exaggerating the sufferings inflicted on their society by Boko Haram as if such a thing is a badge of honor.

Crime / Police Kill 4-year Old Boy In Bayelsa by ovyekuju(m): 9:12pm On Oct 29, 2016
Anger and protest have continued to trail the killing of a four-year-old boy, Godgift Odoki, by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Bayelsa State Police Command.

Godgift was shot dead on October 22 alongside one Anayo during a crossfire between the police and a gang of cultists at Ekeki area of Yenagoa.

One other person was reportedly shot in the buttocks by the police during the shootout. However, the hoodlums were said to have escaped unhurt.

The youths of Epie-Atissa Kingdom in Yenagoa Local Government Area protested the killing and asked the police to fish out the killer squad.

The youths demanded justice for the kid and lamented rising extra-judicial killing by the police in the state.

The President of Oguan Youth Congress (OYC), Mr. Ken Godswill, said the two police sergeants who were indicted in the shooting of the little boy and other victims should be prosecuted and punished accordingly.

He said: “We are demanding justice. All we are saying is that justice should be done. SARS should be brought to book”.

The state House of Assembly said it was upset at the killing of Odoki and other persons who lost their lives in the incident.

Speaking through the Chief Whip, Tonye Isenah and the House Committee Chairman on Security, Mr. Bernard Kenebai, the legislature said it was also aware of some illegal police operations in the state, especially arrest-for-bail.

It said victims of such arrest were compelled to spend money to free themselves.

The House promised to address the incident adequately and “take the matter up with the police”, describing the killing of the little boy as a serious matter.

The chairman, Kogi Chapter of Wuro Miyetti-Allah Association, Ibrahim Abubakar, has been assassinated by unknown gunmen who invaded his residence in the early hours of Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the unknown gunmen numbering about eight, invaded the Peace Community, Road 3, Ganaja road, Lokoja residence of Abubakar at about 2:05 Saturday morning.
