My old man has a 1999 Avalon... 1MZ-FE non vvti.

He complained oil burning and later, engine smoking. Mechanic recommended engine change but old man wasnt ready to spend on the car again as he had other options. The car has been parked since two years or so.

I wish to restore it now and I'm leaning towards engine rebuild over engine replacement because if I buy new engine and if sludge builds up again, how many engines would one have to buy?

My questions:
1. Its obvious the present engine has been heavily sludged. Having been parked so long over two years, can the engine still be rebuilt?

2. If it can be rebuilt, I dont want to use regular engine oil as the engine is prone to sludge. Can I use full synthetic oil with a rebuilt 1MZ-FE engine?
