The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has been granted bail by a Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday. The court granted him bail in the sum of N20 million with a surety in a like sum.

This bail decision comes in the wake of a two-count charge of illegal possession of firearms that was brought against him by the Department of State Service (DSS). Emefiele had been in DSS custody for over a month prior to this hearing.

Emefiele's lawyer, Mr. Joseph Daudu, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), argued for bail on behalf of his client, emphasizing that the offense for which Emefiele was charged is bailable.

The former CBN Governor arrived at the court in a white Hillux Pick-up van, with the plate number concealed, at approximately 9.23 a.m. He was accompanied by an unidentified female who provided assistance as he stepped down from the van.

The case is being presided over by Justice Nicolas Oweibo, who conducted the hearing in his courtroom.

Politics / Re: Benue State Without A First Lady: Who Will Fill The Void? by owukpa(m): 12:28pm On Jul 21, 2023
You didn't read this paragraph: It is essential to acknowledge that while the office of the First Lady is not constitutionally recognised in Nigeria, its significance should not be underestimated, as it has played a vital role in governance in the past.

Zupay:
It is not a constitutional role, the commissioner for women affairs who is usually female would play the role of supporting programmes that tackle healthcare, education, women’s empowerment, poverty alleviation, and youth development.
Politics / Benue State Without A First Lady: Who Will Fill The Void? by owukpa(m): 12:24pm On Jul 21, 2023
https://idomavoice.com/benue-state-without-a-first-lady-who-will-fill-the-void/

In the wake of Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia’s assumption of leadership as the Governor of Benue State, a pertinent question looms large among residents, particularly the women of the state – who will occupy the position of the First Lady?

IDOMA VOICE observed that traditionally, in Nigeria, the wife of the state governor assumes the role of the First Lady, but this time, it seems to be a unique situation since Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia is a Catholic priest and does not have a wife.

Consequently, the office of the First Lady remains vacant, leaving some residents questioning how issues concerning women and the girl child will be addressed.

First Ladies in Nigerian states have historically played crucial roles in championing charitable causes, social initiatives, and advocating for positive change.

They establish and support programmes that tackle healthcare, education, women’s empowerment, poverty alleviation, and youth development.

Past First Ladies of Benue State, such as Regina Akume, Yemisi Suswam, and Eunice Ortom, have been influential figures, running NGOs and foundations that made significant impacts on the lives of the people while their husbands were in office.

IDOMA VOICE recalls that Regina Akume, who now serves as a federal lawmaker, ran the Hope Alive Foundation, while Yemisi Suswam had The Sev’Av Foundation, and Eunice Ortom operated the Eunice Spring of Life Foundation.

Through their respective platforms, these First Ladies raised awareness about important social issues, particularly women’s rights, healthcare, education, and other pressing concerns affecting the state.

The absence of a First Lady in Benue State has left residents uncertain about where to channel issues related to child abuse and other vulnerable groups, as this position often serves as a focal point for such matters.

The government’s silence on the matter only adds to the confusion and concern among the populace.

Amid this vacuum, some residents have suggested that Christie Ada Sam-Ode, the wife of the Deputy Governor, could assume the responsibilities of the First Lady.

Described as a charitable woman, Mrs Sam-Ode has a track record of touching the lives of many people within and outside the state.

Her potential appointment to this unofficial role could provide some direction and hope for addressing critical social issues in the state.

It is essential to acknowledge that while the office of the First Lady is not constitutionally recognised in Nigeria, its significance should not be underestimated, as it has played a vital role in governance in the past.

First Ladies have been instrumental in supporting the government’s efforts, working closely with various stakeholders to uplift the vulnerable and underserved communities.

As the state awaits an official resolution on this matter, it is evident that the need for a First Lady is not merely symbolic but practical, considering the numerous social challenges that require attention and compassionate leadership.

The people of Benue State hope for a swift resolution, enabling them to benefit from the positive impact that a dedicated First Lady can bring to their lives and the state’s progress as a whole.

Until then, the spotlight remains on the government’s decision and the potential impact it may have on the state’s governance and development.

Nairaland / General / 'In Massive Addy’ – When An Error Becomes A Trend by owukpa(m): 1:54pm On Jul 12, 2023
https://idomavoice.com/in-massive-addy-when-an-error-becomes-a-trend/

In recent times, you may have come across posts or messages containing phrases like “In massive addy to me” or “In massive addy to my baby.”
These peculiar expressions have gained popularity among internet users, particularly as pre-birthday or pre-event wishes. While it may seem like a new and trendy way to wish someone in advance, it’s essential to clarify the meaning behind this peculiar term.
The term in question, “addy,” is not derived from the word “advance” as one might assume. Instead, it is an informal abbreviation or slang for the word “address.”
This abbreviation has found its way into casual conversations, text messages, and online communications when referring to either a physical location or an email address.
When used in a casual context, someone might ask, “What’s your addy?” to inquire about a person’s mailing address or email address.
The term has gained traction due to its brevity and informality, making it a convenient option for quick and straightforward communication.
However, it is important to note that the usage of “addy” in the context of pre-birthday or pre-event wishes is an error.
The confusion likely arose from individuals misinterpreting the intended meaning or inadvertently adopting a misused version of the term. Instead of conveying “advance” wishes, the phrase inadvertently conveys an invitation for individuals to share their addresses or locations.
As with any language trend, it’s crucial to be aware of the correct usage and meaning behind the words we employ. While “addy” has its place as a casual slang term for “address,” it is important to avoid misusing it in ways that may lead to confusion or unintended consequences.

Health / Timeline: Chiefs Of Army Staff In Nigeria Since 1966 by owukpa(m): 8:56am On Jun 20, 2023
SOURCE; IDOMA VOICE
https://idomavoice.com/timeline-chiefs-of-army-staff-in-nigeria-since-1966/

IDOMA VOICE reports that Since its first military coup in 1966, Nigeria has witnessed a total of 27 chiefs of army staff, shaping the country's political landscape for over three decades.

Here is a comprehensive timeline highlighting the various army chiefs and their tenures in Nigeria since 1966:

January 1966 – July 1979: The significant event of January 15, 1966, brought about significant changes to Nigeria's military and governmental system. Following the overthrow of the civilian administration, Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa and other prominent politicians were killed, and power was seized by the army, with Aguiyi-Ironsi assuming the role of head of state.

During this time, Yakubu Gowon became Nigeria's first chief of army staff, serving for a brief period of six months. However, he was later selected as the Head of State in July 1966 after another coup,IDOMA VOICE reports.

Joseph Akahan succeeded Gowon as Nigeria's army chief just before the outbreak of the devastating civil war, which claimed the lives of millions, primarily in the southeastern region where Biafra had declared independence.

During the civil war, Major General Hassan Katsina served as the chief of army staff from 1968 until 1971.

In 1971, David Ejoor assumed the position of chief of army staff, replacing Katsina.

Theophilus Danjuma became the chief of army staff in 1975, serving under the head of state Olusegun Obasanjo. Danjuma holds the distinction of being the fourth longest-serving army chief, IDOMA VOICE reports.

October 1979 – August 1990: Ipoola Akinrinade took over as the chief of army staff in 1979, becoming the first army chief during Nigeria's Second Republic. However, he transitioned to the role of chief of defence staff in 1980 and voluntarily retired in 1981.

Gibson Jalo, a lieutenant general, succeeded Akinrinade as the military chief and served under the Shehu Shagari administration.

In 1981, Mohammed Wushishi assumed the role of chief of army staff, but his tenure was cut short in January 1984 following the coup led by General Muhammadu Buhari.

After orchestrating the coups of 1983 and 1985, Ibrahim Babangida became the chief of army staff for a brief period before leading another coup to overthrow Buhari in 1985.

Following Babangida's rise to power, his close ally, Sani Abacha, was appointed as the chief of army staff. Abacha later served as a defense minister under the Babangida regime and was involved in multiple military coups until his death in 1998.

August 1990 – 1999: Salihu Ibrahim succeeded Abacha as the chief of army staff in 1990, but his influence was relatively limited. Ibrahim faced challenges asserting authority due to Abacha's refusal to vacate the traditional residence of the chief of army staff.

During the Abacha regime, Alwali Kazir and Ishaya Bamaiyi held the position of chief of army staff. Bamaiyi retired in 1999 at the start of Nigeria's fourth republic.

May 1999 – September 2010: Victor Malu became the chief of army staff in 1999, following the restoration of democracy. However, he was dismissed in 2001 by President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was influenced by alleged American dislike for Malu's views and the Nigerian-United States Military Cooperation Agreement.

Under the Obasanjo administration, Alex Ogomudia, Martin Agwai, and Owoye Azazi served as chiefs of army staff.

In 2007, Umaru Yar'Adua appointed Luka Yusuf as the chief of army staff, but he retired amidst a scandal involving the sale of arms to militants.

Abdulrahman Dambazau took over the position in 2008 but faced accusations that the military was covertly attempting to seize power due to Yar'Adua's illness. Dambazau was subsequently retired by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2010, IDOMA VOICE reports.

September 2010 – May 2021: Azubuike Ihejerika served as the chief of army staff from 2010 to 2014, becoming the first chief from the Southeast since the end of the civil war in 1970.

Kenneth Minimah succeeded Ihejerika in 2014 as the chief of army staff.

Tukur Buratai, Nigeria's longest-serving chief of army staff, assumed the role in July 2015. His tenure was marked by successes against Boko Haram but also marred by allegations of widespread extrajudicial killings. Buratai resigned in January 2021.

After Buratai's resignation, Farouk Yahaya was appointed as the 22nd chief of army staff by President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2021.

In 2023, President Tinubu appointed Maj. T. A Lagbaja as the new army chief, IDOMA VOICE reports.

Politics / 10th Assembly: Meet The Only Returning PDP Senator From North Central by owukpa(m): 8:25am On Jun 09, 2023
Source: https://idomavoice.com/10th-assembly-abba-moro-the-only-returning-pdp-senator-from-north-central/

In the wake of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria, many political heavyweights found themselves swept away by a tidal wave of change. However, one individual managed to defy the odds and secure his reelection as a Senator representing the Benue South Senatorial District.

That individual is Abba Moro, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the only PDP Senator who was re-elected in the North Central zone.

The North Central region of Nigeria, encompassing six states - Kogi, Plateau, Benue, Kwara, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) - is a critical political battleground.

Prior to the 2023 elections, the Senate representation from the region was predominantly split between the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, the electoral outcomes of the 2023 elections brought significant changes to the Senate composition in the North Central zone.

In the midst of the political upheaval, Abba Moro managed to maintain his position as the Senator representing Benue South, making him the only PDP Senator from the North Central region to survive the electoral tsunami. This achievement highlights his strong political standing, popularity, and connection with his constituents.

Abba Moro's ability to weather the storm can be attributed to various factors.

First and foremost, his track record of effective representation and commitment to the welfare of the people of Benue South earned him significant support and loyalty from his constituents. Moro's legislative accomplishments, particularly in areas such as education, youth empowerment, and rural development, have endeared him to the people he serves.

Additionally, Abba Moro's grassroots mobilization and engagement strategies played a crucial role in his successful reelection bid. By maintaining strong connections with local communities and effectively communicating his achievements, Moro was able to resonate with voters and secure their confidence.

The survival of Abba Moro amidst the wave of change in the North Central region positions him as a potential candidate for the position of Senate Minority Leader in the 10th Assembly.

His experience, integrity, and demonstrated leadership qualities make him a suitable candidate to lead the opposition in the Senate. As the only returning PDP senator from the North Central zone, his appointment would bring a much-needed balance and representation for the region at the leadership level.

Abba Moro's potential emergence as the Senate Minority Leader would be a testament to his resilience, political acumen, and commitment to serving the people of Benue South and the entire North Central region.

His leadership would provide a strong voice for the opposition and ensure that the interests and concerns of the region are effectively articulated and addressed.

The construction of the Loko-Oweto road is indeed a big relief for motorists travelling to Otukpo and other eastern and southern parts of the country from Abuja or Keffi and its environs.

Politics / Free Nigeria Movement Convener Escapes Stab Attack In Abuja by owukpa(m): 12:19pm On Mar 26, 2023

A tragic episode was averted today at the Unity Fountain, Abuja, where a group, the Free Nigerian Movement, converged for its Occupy INEC protest. Members gathered at the foot of the fountain for the daily charge when the group’s private security restrained a man, later identified as Abdullahi, after he attempted to stab the convener, Dr. Moses Paul. According to the head of security, Mr. Taiwo, he began to monitor the man after noticing his suspicious behaviour. He said the man removed a knife concealed in his clothes as he approached Dr. Moses Paul in the crowd attempting to stab him. He was however restrained and the knife recovered. The man has since been handed over to the police for further investigation.

Reacting to the incident, Dr. Moses Paul, described the action of the assailant as unfortunate. He said, “The Nigerian political system which the likes of Prof. Mahmoud would trade their birthrights to perpetuate, is rigged to produce people like this young man. He is a victim of a system whose premium output is a thriving demography of conscienceless individuals especially young people who would never find reason or muster courage to question the system because they are broken beyond their rational wits. While I am grateful to God for sparing my life, I feel pity for him for the grave injustice done to him by a system that would never allow young people to rise. He has been handed over to the police for further investigation. We await their findings.”

He called on members to remain calm and not behave unlawfully towards the man. Thereafter, the group proceeded to the Ministry of Justice where they made a brief stop to pray for Nigeria kneeling and raising their fists as Timi Dakolo’s, Great nation, which has become the rallying tune for this protest, set the mood.

The group maintained its call for the sack, arrest and prosecution of Prof. Yakubu Mahmoud as well as the establishment of an Interim government. The protest which entered its fifth day today continues tomorrow.

A classic expression of religious tolerance and beautiful display of diversity occurred on Friday when a group of protesters paused its protest and gathered round to protect Muslim faithful as they held their Jumat prayers.

The event was day four of the ongoing protest by the Free Nigeria Movement manner of conduct and outcome of the recently conducted presidential poll.

Members of the group who were seen marching on major roads of Maitama in Abuja, the nation’s capital, sang solidarity songs with placards that showed their displeasure with the election of 25th February, 2023.

The procession rose from the Unity Fountain and berthed at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

However, when the protesters arrived at the INEC head office, it was time for Muslim prayers and they passed the demonstration to allow Muslim faithful (both men and women) to observe their Jumat prayer while being encircled by Christians.

The convener of the group, Dr. Moses Paul, explained that the protest became necessary due to the magnitude of impunity committed by the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Yakubu Mahmoud, during the collation of results describing the presidential election as a charade and the worst in the history of the country. He said the spending on the election juxtaposed with the outcome culminated in total waste of the nation’s resources.

According to him, “Prof. Mahmoud represents everything that is wrong with Nigeria today. He had a simple straightforward role of collating and announcing the will of Nigerians. There are rules, guidelines and laws guiding conduct, collation and declaration of results. He spoke extensively on the promise of a free, fair and all inclusive election. But he chose the path of shame to become an instrument in the hands of the enemies of Nigeria.” He maintained that the protest is neither for nor against any particular candidate but against “any further desecration of our laws,” insisting that “Nigeria sits at the edge of precipice and any more flagrant display of injustice or promotion of illegality, could upset the balance.”

A classic expression of religious tolerance and beautiful display of our diversity occurred when the group paused its protest and gathered round to protect the Muslims as they held their Jumat prayers.

Responding to the allegation by the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Barrister Felix Morka that the group is made up of disgruntled supporters sponsored by Mr. Peter Obi and Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba – Ahmed of the Labour Party, Dr. Moses Paul described them as unfounded, fictitious and a ploy to stoke bile and ill sentiments against lawful Nigerians who are within their rights to express displeasure with a fault that has the potential to bring harm to our democracy reiterating that the group and it’s demands are non-partisan.

The group maintained its call for the sack, arrest and prosecution of the INEC chairman, and the establishment of an interim government which will appoint a new INEC chairman to conduct a rerun of the presidential election. The protest continues tomorrow.

Politics / Tinubu: Fresh Protest Calling For Annulment Of Presidential Election Hits Abuja by owukpa(m): 6:51pm On Mar 22, 2023

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZtNk7usORw

Some protesters, under the auspices of Save Nigeria Movement on Wednesday, stormed the National Assembly in Abuja to register their displeasure over the outcome of the February 25 presidential election in Nigeria.

The protesters who carried placards with various inscriptions such as “Save our Democracy,” “Politicians are killing our Democracy,” and “INEC killing the Nigerian Democracy,” among others, reiterated their earlier call for the annulment of the 2023 presidential election.

The protest, which took off from the Unity Fountain in Maitama, paralyzed vehicular movement in the heart of the nation’s capital for hours.

The demonstrators, however, met stiff resistance as they were denied entrance into the National Assembly premises by security men.

The DPO of the National Assembly who came out to address the protesters said there was no written request for permission from the group or the relevant authorities, and as such, the protesters cannot be allowed into the National Assembly premises.

Leader and co-Convener of the Free Nigeria Group, Dr Moses Ogidi Paul, while addressing newsmen, described the Independent National Electoral Commision, INEC, as a failed institution.

He called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of its chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu for supervising what he tagged a fraudulent presidential election.

Other members of the group equally expressed their pain over the conduct of the presidential poll.

This is coming less than 24 hours after the group staged a similar protest to the headquarters of INEC where they demanded immediate removal of the INEC chairman.
