"Thank you," I said to the nurse as she began to move away. She smiled and I returned it. I glanced back at Zane who was still solemn and silent. By now, I was completely done with his attitude. "Zane," I said warningly, "you made a decision and it backfired, sure. However anyone would have made the same decision you did, it was the only logical decision to make. No one could have anticipated that outcome, not even the almighty Alpha. You need to stop beating yourself up about it. It won't help anything. No one is dead except most of the rogues, which is great. Everyone will heal just fine." Zane averted his eyes to the wall and said nothing. I sighed, too tired now to try to understand his side or keep him company. Turning on my heel, I headed off to bed and left Zane stood in the centre of the warzone that used to be a living room. --- I didn't see Zane all morning but I did hear of a group his pack that were scheduled to visit my brothers' pack. They were after medical supplies and to warn them about the escaped rogues. Seeing as I had nothing to do, I decided to accompany them on the trip. The ride to my family's pack was quiet, but I noticed a lot of eyes drifted over to me which unnerved me. We were greeted by guard wolves and escorted to the house I'd only recently evacuated for Zane's. When I climbed out the car, my eyes fastened on Douglas and I smiled slightly. I'd kind of missed my brother's. "Little sister," Douglas said with a grim smile. He gesturned for us all to enter the house where I found boxes stacked ready for us. I assumed they were full of medical supplies. Damian approached us and I smiled solemnly at him which he returned. "I'm sorry to hear about your mate," Damian said quietly. "He's more emotionally wounded than physically," I replied. Damian smiled wryly and turned his attention to the pack members. I copied his actions and found them watching me, looking lost. "So all these boxes are ours?" I asked. "Indeed, do you need help moving them?" Damian inquired. I glanced over the pack members, quickly counting them. "A little bit of help, please," I replied to my brother, " shall we start moving them out guys?" The pack members nodded then began carrying them out to the car. I moved over to help but Damian grabbed the back of my shirt. "Their Alpha is lost and broken, they need guidance. As their Alpha's mate, you're next in charge so they're looking to you for support. Their wolves are desperate for authority, for their Luna," Damian murmured. I looked at him in shock but he just picked up a box then walked outside. I noticed a few of Damian's pack nurses had engaged Zane's pack members in conversation. My mind hesitated on going outside and I knew why. The house was practically empty. Sucking in a deep calming breath, I walked backwards towards the office I'd frequently found my dearest Father in. I checked that no one was around then slipped in through the partially open door. Time to finally find any evidence or proof that was available. It didn't take me too long to find a code written on the bottom of the desk and open the safe. Swinging my backpack off my back, I swept the measly contents into it and quickly slammed shut the safe again. "Your ass is mine," I hissed as I zipped up my backpack. I speedily exited the office and made my way outside. --- I threw the backpack on the bed then went to close my bedroom door. Unzipping the bag, I rummaged around in it curiously before deciding what to check out first. There were tapes, CDs, folders and envelopes. I was just about to begin on the folders when there was a knock on the door. My nose scrunched up and I quickly zipped the bag then pushed it under the bed. When I opened the door, I found Zane leaning on the door frame looking downcast. |

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN ALEXIS POV I was all ready to climb into bed and sleep away my problems. My problems being Zane. I was way too confused about my feelings for him and what to do. Should I mate him? I mean, I was incredibly attracted to him and I guess I could see myself falling in love with him one day. Staying with him forever though? I frowned and pulled back the covers on the bed. "Luna," a voice practically screamed at me. Not only did I nearly crap myself at the sudden and unexpected presence of another person, but I also cringed at the use of the word 'Luna.' I spun round and fixed a glare on the female in the doorway. "Alpha Zane, he's hurt," she told me. My human side was surprised and worried, my inner cat was insane with anxiety. Before I could even process my actions, my cat had taken over and I found myself darting around the female. I followed the strong scent of blood and Zane, it taking me downstairs and into the living room. "Zane," I said, stunned. Zane's top was sliced open at the back revealing three long gashes. Not only that, but smaller cuts grazed his arms and his head was bleeding. Zane's weary eyes shot to me and suddenly became alert. "Alexis," he sighed, "I told you all not to fetch her." The last part was aimed at the wolves all gatehred around the living. I then noticed that it wasn't just Zane that was injured. I placed the back of my hand over my mouth as I surveyed all the injured wolves before returning my gaze to my wounded mate. "Excuse me, of course they should get me," I said angrily. Zane just sighed and raked a severely scratched up hand through his blood covered blond hair. "Oh Zane, what happened?" I demanded. "There were more rogues than we were expecting and the ambushed us. We fought our way out and managed to kill most, but some got away," Zane explained blandly. I sighed and walked over to him in order to inspect his injuries. "You need to get these cleaned up," I told him gently. "I need to make sure my wolves are okay. It was my decision to attack, therefore this is all down to me," Zane said emotionlessly. --- Zane refused to leave the living room and get himself sorted. Instead of just giving up and walking off like the older me would do, I remained stood by his side. I offered support to the injured wolves when an extra pair of hands was needed. I didn't particularly know what I was doing but I was only needed for simple tasks like bandaging or cleaning minor wounds. Eventually, every wolf was sorted beside Zane. "You now," I said, diverting my eyes back to Zane. I found he was already watching me with hooded eyes. "Zane please," I pleaded with him. Zane sighed but nodded his head in reluctant acceptance. An older woman moved over and we helped Zane get his shirt off so his wounds could be examined. His face didn't reveal any pain as the nurse cleaned up his back. "They need stitches," she informed him. Zane just nodded in reply. Fifteen minutes later and Zane was perfectly cleaned and stitched up. |
