We, as Africans, feel an immense sense of pride and celebrate wholeheartedly whenever we learn that a Black African immigrant born and raised on the continent is appointed or elected to a high-ranking official position in Europe. We naturally celebrate when one of our own becomes a government minister or an elected member of parliament in nations like France or the United Kingdom. This history of achievement spans from the 1950s all the way to the present day. However, this success raises an important question: how would we react within our own countries, and across our borders, if an African president appointed a European immigrant to a cabinet position today? Consider our national sports teams. How would we feel if our FIFA World Cup squads featured eight or more players of European descent, similar to how France’s national team is predominantly composed of Black players? If the UK or France appointed an 100 % Black African immigrant as their UN ambassador today, we would rightfully cheer. But how would the public react if Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Senegal, Liberia, or the DRC appointed a white citizen as their ambassador to the US? What if the prime minister or Vice president of one of those nations was a European who had immigrated to Africa less than 30 years ago? Where locals saw only the familiar streets they had walked for decades, he saw opportunity. He created value. He employed people. He succeeded. And what is the response from too many South Africans? Not introspection. Not “Why did I fail to seize the same chances in the neighborhood I have known my whole life?” Instead, pure, poisonous jealousy. They attack the very people who have outworked and outsmarted them.
