Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appoints a former aide who is under investigation for corruption as acting Likud party executive director general.

David Sharan will replace incumbent Zuri Siso, who was tapped for the position of Israeli consul in Miami, Likud announces.

Sharan, a longtime Likud operative, previously served as Netanyahu’s chief of staff and bureau chief as well as the CEO of the Eilat Ashkelon Pipeline Company. He was indicted on charges of bribery, money laundering, and breach of trust in 2021 in connection with a corruption scandal known as the submarine affair, involving the purchase of navy vessels worth hundreds of millions of dollars from a German shipbuilder.

Sharan later went on to testify in the so-called Case 4000, in which Netanyahu faces charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. Prosecutors in 2022 asked the Jerusalem District Court to declare Sharan a hostile witness after he retracted previous testimony and harshly criticized prosecutors and police interrogators in his remarks.

“We wish David Sharan success in fulfilling his new role,” Likud says in a statement.

Likud is expected to vote this week on holding leadership primaries on November 25. Members of the Likud Central Committee will meet on October 23 to approve the timetable and appoint an internal elections oversight committee. According to media reports, Netanyahu is expected to run uncontested.

MOSCOW, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Russia and the United States should build a "Putin-Trump" rail tunnel under the Bering Strait to link the two countries, unlock joint exploration of natural resources and "symbolize unity", a Kremlin envoy has suggested.

The proposal by Kirill Dmitriev, President Vladimir Putin's investment envoy and head of Russia's RDIF sovereign wealth fund, envisages a construction project costing $8 billion funded by Moscow and "international partners" to build a 70-mile rail and cargo link in under eight years.

Dmitriev, who has helped spearhead a Russian charm offensive designed to revive U.S.-Russia ties, floated the tunnel idea late on Thursday, Oct. 16, after Putin spoke to U.S. President Donald Trump by phone and agreed to meet in Budapest to try to find a way to stop the war in Ukraine.

Democracy Hub, filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Ghana ‘s government, alleging that the agreement with Washington is unconstitutional because it wasn’t approved by the Ghanaian parliament and that it may violate conventions that forbid sending people to countries where they could face persecution.

Government spokesman Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the attorney general would defend the arrangement in court, but otherwise declined to comment.

Addis Abeba — The World Bank's latest assessment on poverty and equity in Ethiopia forecasts that poverty will increase to 43% by 2025, up from 33% in 2016 (measured at $3 per day, 2021 PPP).

Inflation hit urban households hardest, while most rural families did not benefit from higher food prices due to limited market engagement.

Additionally, rural communities have restricted access to off-farm opportunities, in part due to policies that limit the effective functioning of land and labor markets. The significant decline in living standards in rural areas, where approximately three-quarters of the population resides, has accentuated the rural nature of poverty in Ethiopia, the World Bank says.

Human capital indicators in the country remain alarmingly low, especially in rural regions. By 2021, 86 percent of rural adults had not completed primary education, nearly half of rural households had at least one stunted child, and over a quarter reported having a severely stunted child, according to the report.

Disparities in access to public services by income are stark, with sanitation facilities and electricity connections being nearly three to four times more prevalent in the top 20 percent of the country than in the bottom 20 percent. The ownership of assets further underscores this divide, as less than 1 percent of the poorest quintile possess refrigerators, cars, bicycles, or computers.

The poorest households often experience isolation from markets and public services and are disproportionately affected by climatic shocks and food shortages, the World Bank notes.

Peru president removed from office after string of scandals and allegations

Dina Boluarte, the president of Peru, was removed from office on Thursday after a late-night congressional vote in which parties across the political spectrum called for her ouster.

Boluarte has been under investigation for months over various allegations including bribery and involvement in a deadly crackdown on protesters in 2022.

She has denied all allegations and refused to attend the vote on Thursday, where Congress approved her removal, citing “permanent moral incapacity” to face the onslaught of organized crime in the country.

The president of Congress, 38-year-old José Jerí Oré, will act as interim president and must now call elections, under the constitution.

Boluarte becomes the latest in a long line of disgraced Peruvian leaders. Since the turn of the millennium, no fewer than seven presidents have been brought to trial or faced legal challenges relating to allegations of corruption or human rights abuses. An eighth shot himself dead when police were closing in.

In 2022, Boluarte became Peru’s first female president after her predecessor Pedro Castillo was arrested and impeached by lawmakers for attempting to dissolve the legislative body and install an emergency government.


But since then, she has been plagued by scandal. The most serious accusations concern the deaths of more than 60 people during a crackdown by government security forces on the protests that followed Castillo’s ouster.

She’s also accused of accepting Rolex watches and other jewelry as bribes, and transporting a fugitive politician in a presidential vehicle.

The most lurid accusation is that she abandoned her post to get plastic surgery on her nose in 2023 – neglecting to inform Congress or delegate her powers during her nearly two-week absence, as she was constitutionally required to do. She insisted the surgery was “essential” for her health. The surgeon who did the operation denied that, saying they were all cosmetic procedures.

Even conservative parties that have historically supported Boluarte turned against her recently, joining the push to remove her from office, Reuters reported – including Rafael Lopez’s Popular Renewal and Keiko Fujimori’s Popular Force, both political heavyweights.
