The pan-African intergovernmental organisation headquartered in Addis Ababa has increasingly become a political arena where the continent's heavyweights South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Nigeria jostle for power. In order to impose their views and place representatives in key positions in the African Union and other international organisations, these nations compete for influence and build coalitions. On the sidelines of these strategic manoeuvres, a few smaller countries such as Rwanda are carving out a niche for themselves.

West Papua – Deadliest Conflict In Oceania that
United Nations never talks about.
West Papua is facing a silent genocide as human rights violations affect the archipelago. Following the Indonesian occupation in 1963, the struggle for liberation and self-determination by the indigenous has resulted in violence and revolt. Nearly 58 years later, the conflict rages on between Indonesia and the Free Papua movement.

According to Amnesty International reports, at least 100,000 West Papuans have been reported killed by the Indonesian authorities since in the takeover in the 1960s. Despite, the ongoing conflict in West Papua, the fight for independence remains largely under documented and under reported as Indonesian authorities have suppressed information leaking internationally of the conflict.


Most recently, during the revolt in late 2018, the Indonesian government restricted foreign access into parts of West Papua and cut off the region’s internet access. However, in 2019 the Australian newspaper, the Guardian and the University of Newcastle embarked on a project to map the past atrocities and violence in West Papua since the 1970’s.

Therefore, there has been a shift towards uncovering the realities of the conflict which has also been fueled by the renewed activism for independence by the Free Papua movement.

Nonetheless, all efforts of the pro – independence movement have been suppressed by the Indonesian authorities. According to Yan Christian Warinussey, a senior West Papuan lawyer and civil rights advocate, ‘the government’s response is to view nationalist groups as a separatist group and refuse to enter into any kind of dialogue with them.’

Similarly, in 2017, a petition for independence signed by 1.8 million West Papuans was smuggled out of the region and submitted to the UN De-colonisation Committee. This however was rejected on legal grounds.

Thus, the increased tensions stemming from self-determination and breach of civil rights between the Indonesian authorities and the West Papua freedom movement have culminated into violent skirmishes. Most significantly, the contentious highway project in December 2018 fueled tensions as many West Papuans feared the road would allow for further exploitation of resources, thereby negatively affecting local businesses.

An armed attack by West Papuans killed 16 Indonesian workers, the Indonesian authorities responded to the conflict by sending military and police into the region to find the attackers.

Hundreds of West Papuan’s were killed, and local authorities reported that 45,000 Papuans have been displaced. Indonesia denies committing the human rights abuses despite further violent outbreaks continuing to affect the region as videos and photos depict peaceful protests becoming violent as tensions flare between demonstrators and security forces.

The current geo-political environment, in which Black Lives Matter has been a widely recognized movement may act as a facilitator for change for the lives of West Papuans. Black Lives Matter has led to increased international scrutiny through social media platforms and has led to tangible social change over the world.

Therefore, the West Papuan freedom movement has been given a strong platform and the current political environment has allowed for the modern-day colonization of West Papua by Indonesia to be revealed. Therefore, international pressure could change the trajectory of the West Papuan independence movement.

Recently, Indonesia has indicated they may launch an inquiry regarding the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in 1965, under the ‘anti-communist’ regime of Indonesian military leader, Suharto. This would mark a seismic shift in the government stance on addressing historical atrocities.
Furthermore, the inquiry opens up the discourse for reconciliation between Indonesia and the West Papuan indigenous peoples. Fundamentally, it may pave a path for peaceful resolution for nationalist sentiment and is the first step in creating a strong civil society.

Trump to campaign in Michigan town with historic links to white extremism

(Reuters) - Former President Donald Trump will visit a Michigan town on Tuesday one month after white supremacists rallied there, sparking renewed criticism from Democrats who accuse his campaign of stirring up racial tensions for political gain.


Trump is scheduled to talk about "crime and safety" at the Livingston County Sheriff's Office in Howell, a town of some 10,000 people northwest of Detroit. A Trump campaign spokesperson rejected criticism of the site of the event, promising Trump would speak against "hate of any form."

The event is one of a number Trump is holding this week as Democrats meet in Chicago to formally choose Vice President Kamala Harris as their nominee in the Nov. 5 election.
But the event in Howell has attracted particular attention because of the town's association with the Ku Klux Klan. The town has historical links to the KKK: In the 1970s, Grand Dragon Robert Miles had a Howell mailing address and held meetings on a nearby farm.

About a dozen white supremacists chanted "Heil Hitler" and carried signs reading "White Lives Matter" during a march through downtown Howell last month. According to local media, another group of demonstrators shouted, "We love Hitler, we love Trump" from a highway overpass just outside Howell.

The Harris campaign has criticized Trump for planning the event in Howell while failing to condemn what it called a "blatant display of racism and antisemitism in his name." In an interview with Reuters after a rally in Pennsylvania on Monday, Trump did not directly respond to a question about that criticism.

Trump has been widely criticized for racist remarks about Harris, who if elected in November would be the first Black woman and South Asian person to become president.

Nigeria's president headed to France on Monday dogged by a row over jet planes impounded by a French court in a dispute pitting Abuja against a Chinese company.

An airport source told AFP that Bola Ahmed Tinubu was flying on the presidential Airbus A330 -- which until a few days ago was impounded by a court in France.

The Ashanti–Fante War (1806–1807) was a war fought between the Ashanti Empire and the Fante Confederacy in the region of what is currently the Republic of Ghana.

This war, also known as the Ghana War, begins between the Ashanti associate degree Fante Confederacies of present–day Ghana. The Ashanti had resisted any attempt by Europeans, chiefly the British, to colonize them, and aligned themselves with the Dutch to limit British influence within the region. However, the British still annexed neighboring areas, together with the Fante, and also the subsequent conflicts eventually increased into the war of 1806, during which the Ashanti were victorious. In 1811, the Ga–Fante War sees the defeat of the Ashanti, though they still capture a British fort. In 1814 the Ashanti launch an invasion of the Gold Coast, totally routing the tribes allied with the Europeans.[citation needed]

A series of forts were designed by the British Government in the region from 1821 and the Ashanti planned to invade and capture.

In 1824 their forces surrounded a army of around 1,000 British troops under the governor of West Africa, General Sir Charles McCarthy (?–1824) at Accra, defeating them and forcing the suicide of a humiliated McCarthy. The series of correct wars between the Fante people and Ashanti begins in 1826, ending with a pact in 1831, however breaking out once more in 1873.[citation needed]
