US declares Maduro rival Gonzalez winner of Venezuelan presidential election

Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Thursday that the U.S. government is recognizing Edmundo Gonzalez as the winner of Venezuela's presidential election over incumbent Nicolas Maduro.

In a statement on the U.S. government’s position on the Latin American country’s presidential results, Blinken said Venzueala’s National Electoral Council decision to declare Maduro the victor on Sunday was wrong.

The CNE’s rapid declaration of Nicolas Maduro as the winner of the presidential election came with no supporting evidence. The CNE still has not published disaggregated data or any of the vote tally sheets, despite repeated calls from Venezuelans and the international community to do so,” Blinken noted.
The secretary of state said Gonzalez was the rightful winner of the Venezuelan presidential election.

“The democratic opposition has published more than 80 percent of the tally sheets received directly from polling stations throughout Venezuela," Blinken said. "Those tally sheets indicate that Edmundo González Urrutia received the most votes in this election by an insurmountable margin. Independent observers have corroborated these facts, and this outcome was also supported by election day exit polls and quick counts.”

Maduro rose to power in 2013 and has been accused by the United States and other nations of being corrupt and authoritarian. The country has dealt with economic troubles and the exodus of 7.7 million residents since 2014, according to the Associated Press.

'Self-immolating' Trump should drop out after 'disastrous' interview: critics

Donald Trump’s highly-combative performance at what is being called a “disastrous” on-stage interview with the National Association of Black Journalists went so poorly there are calls from the left for him to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

Trump arrived on stage late, blamed the organization’s equipment rather than, as HuffPost’s Philip Lewis reported, negotiations backstage “that NABJ not do the live fact checking.” The event, slated to last one full hour, ended when the campaign pulled the plug after just 34 minutes.
“The questions were Rude and Nasty, often in the form of a statement, but we CRUSHED IT!” Trump claimed on his social media platform.
“Trump should drop out of the race,” announced libertarian organizer Joshua Reed Eakle, president of Project Liberal, which includes on its board of directors former GOP Congressman Joe Walsh . He also referred to Trump’s performance as “the behavior of a toddler.”
“This was a train wreck that derailed into the ocean where it was attacked by a shark and electrocuted before being hit by an asteroid,” mocked gun violence prevention activist and Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts, referring to some of the ex-president’s recent remarks.

Journalist Aaron Rupar, founder of Public Notice, described Trump as “angrily self-immolating.”

Human Rights Campaign national press secretary Brandon Wolf added, “Donald Trump is breathtakingly racist, utterly unhinged, and completely unfit for public service. He should drop out.”

“Donald Trump is mentally unfit to be President, and every single editorial board across America tomorrow should have an op-ed calling for him to drop out,” declared Democratic pollster and strategist Matt McDermott, who also appeared to call Trump’s performance, “completely deranged + unhinged.”

The Lincoln Project’s Rick Wilson asked, “When will @JDVance call for @realdonaldtrumpto be replaced at the top of the ticket? It’s clear Trump’s age, dementia, and collapsing physical and mental condition have rendered him unable to carry out the campaign, much less the Presidency.”

The Oversight Project — part of the powerful right-wing think tank the Heritage Foundation — claimed this week that it used mobile ad data from cell phones to track the movements of Thomas Crooks in the year leading up to his attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally earlier this month.
“We found the assassin’s connections through our in-depth analysis of mobile ad data to track movements of Crooks and his associates,” the Oversight Project wrote on social media on Monday, explaining that it had identified nine “devices that were located at Crook’s home and his work within the past year.”

The organization suggested that Crooks may have had some connection to the FBI before the shooting, writing: “Someone who regularly visited Crooks home and work also visited a building in Washington, DC located in Gallery Place. This is in the same vicinity of an @FBI office on June 26, 2023. Who’s deviceis this?”

MONROVIA, LIBERIA —
Severe flooding in Liberia has led a group of senators to propose relocating the capital city away from overcrowded and poorly managed Monrovia, a suggestion met with a mixture of enthusiasm and hesitancy in the West African country.

Flash floods triggered by torrential rains between the end of June and early July left nearly 50,000 Liberians in urgent need, the national disaster management agency said.

The flood-prone capital was particularly badly hit, owing in part to overpopulation, a poor sewage system, and a lack of building regulation.

Meeting to discuss the persistent flooding problem, a senate joint committee in early July suggested establishing a new city to replace Monrovia.

"It's a good idea because our current capital city is a mess," said Chris Kpewudu, a young motorbike driver in the capital.

"There is garbage all over the city and also when it rains, there is flooding everywhere, but with a new city, it will be well laid out and our capital city could look like, or more than, Abuja," he added.

Nigeria's Abuja is one of a handful of planned capital cities on the African continent.

Tanzania's capital Dodoma and Yamoussoukro in Ivory Coast were also established as administrative capitals towards the end of the 20th century, with all three cities occupying geographically central positions in their respective countries.

Monrovia is home to 1.5 million people and lies on the Atlantic coast of Liberia, one of the poorest countries in the world.

The city is the economic, political, and cultural hub of the country, with the Freeport of Monrovia providing a gateway for Liberian exports including iron ore, rubber, and timber to reach the United States and Europe.

But the city's poorly functioning infrastructure can barely keep up with its ever-expanding population.

The Ministry of Public Works told AFP it was carefully reviewing the proposal, adding that the the plan did not yet include an exact location for the move, and that any decision would come down to economic viability.

"Having a new city is capital-intensive," said T. T. Benjamin Myers, the ministry's communications director.

"As a country, our national budget is still around $600 million... so having a new city will require a lot of technical, financial, and economic factors to be seriously considered," he added.

Bodyguard of S Leone's ex-leader jailed over failed coup

A former bodyguard of Sierra Leone's ex-President Ernest Bai Koroma has been found guilty of treason and sentenced alongside 10 others over a failed coup last year.
Amadu Koita Makalo, who is also a former soldier, was sentenced to 182 years in prison on charges of treason, murder and shooting with intent to murder.
The charges followed attacks by gunmen on a military barracks and prisons last November.
It came months after a disputed election which saw President Julius Maada Bio narrowly re-elected for a second term.

'Serial killer' arrested after bodies found in Kenya dump

Kenyan police have arrested a man who they have described as a “serial killer” suspected to have been behind the gruesome murder of nine women whose mutilated bodies were found in a disused quarry used as a rubbish dump.
Police say Jomaisi Khalisia, 33, confessed to having killed 42 women since 2022, including his own wife.
The suspect was arrested at a bar early on Monday morning as he was watching the Euro final.
There has been shock and outrage in Kenya since the first of the dismembered bodies were found on Friday at the Mukuru quarry in the capital, Nairobi.

“[He] confessed to have lured, killed and disposed of 42 female bodies at the dumping site, all murdered between 2022 and as recent as Thursday," said Mohamed Amin, head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
He said that after his arrest, the suspect led police officers to his house, about 100m (yards) from the crime scene.
Mr Amin said they had found crucial evidence in the suspect's house, including 10 phones, a laptop, identity cards and personal female clothing.
They also found a machete they "believed was being used to dismember the victims", and nine sacks like the ones used to dispose of the bodies.
Since Friday, police have cordoned off the dumpsite where the bodies were found in various stages of decomposition.
The victims were aged between 18 and 30 and were all killed in the same way, according to the police.
Police say they are still interrogating the suspect to establish the motive for the killings and he will be arraigned in court on Tuesday.
