The former deputy national publicity secretary of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the ruling APC of taking actions capable of destabilizing Nigeria’s democratic system.


He also called on the United States government led by President Donald Trump to intervene to safeguard democracy in Nigeria.

Frank made this known in a statement on Thursday.


Recall that INEC on Wednesday derecognized David Mark’s leadership of the ADC pending the determination of a suit filed before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

However, Frank, in a reaction, alleged that interference in opposition parties, now extending to the ADC, poses a serious threat to democratic governance and could “set Nigeria on fire” if not urgently addressed.


“INEC and the APC-led government appear to be taking steps that threaten the very foundation of our democracy,” he said, adding that the pattern of events across opposition parties suggests a coordinated attempt to weaken political competition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He warned that the trend mirrors developments during the regime of former head of state Sani Abacha, when democratic institutions were suppressed.

“This pattern is reminiscent of the tactics employed during the era of General Sani Abacha,” Frank stated.


The activist expressed concern over the actions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging that recent developments point to a drift towards authoritarianism.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has, through recent actions, evoked concerns of a return to authoritarian tendencies.

“His desperation to retain power by all means raises serious questions about the future of democratic governance in Nigeria,” he said.


Frank claimed that internal crises within major opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, Social Democratic Party (SDP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), had been influenced by external forces and warned that the situation was now spreading to the ADC.

He further alleged that the judiciary was being deployed to frustrate opposition parties through questionable rulings.

“The courts and the judiciary have been used to thwart democratic processes with frivolous decisions,” he said, calling on the international community to take action against what he described as violations of judicial integrity.

“Nigeria is about to head into anarchy and a crisis that might be difficult to curtail,” he said, adding that such developments have historically led to political upheavals, including civil wars in other countries.

“I call on all well-meaning Nigerians, including the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), and traditional rulers, among others, to speak up and defend our democracy. Silence at this critical moment is not an option.

“I urge the international community to remain vigilant… particularly the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to encourage and support the preservation of democratic values in Nigeria,” he added

Rivers lawmakers publicly announced their defection. They sued the Governor and it was in their affidavit that they had defected yet the Court said membership of a political party is determined by the Party not the Courts.
APC members here were asking if Amaewhule's name was in the APC Register.

Today, Nafiu has been expelled. A Party is supreme over its own affairs. The man resigned, a NEC meeting was held, INEC was present and the formal handover of activities took place..... A NEC meeting, yet Professor of Law has now interpreted ante bellum in his own way.

Like I said, we have seen this before. The worst institution hit by Tinubu's ascendancy is the Judiciary, it will take years to right the wrongs.

APC has been losing votes since 2015. In 2019, they got 19 million votes, in 2023, 8.9 million...that's 10 million votes gone..like that.

INEC is biased really, but then the oppostion brought it somewhat on themselves. If Atiku and Obi had come to an agreement in 2022, by now there would be no APC In charge .

Again, status quo ante bellum means "before the hostilities began", before the war started, before the suit was filed. Before this suit was filed, Mark was Chairman. I have continued to say that this Judiciary you people are supporting will wreck this nation. A man resigned and is going to Court to challenge decision of the NEC of a Party, the highest ruling organ of the Party asides the National Convention. Ambassador Timi Frank, a former Spokesperson of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised concerns that the brotherhood amongst Nigerians which was the bedrock, promoting a unified Nigeria, has now completely collapsed under the President Bola Asiwaju Tinubu’s Administration as it is now more glaring everyday on the sharp divisions even amongst persons of same faith, as can be seen at the burial of the Mother of the Former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai . It is rather disheartening and instructive of note that no South Western Muslim of the Yoruba ethnicity was present at the burial, but instead chose to abstain from the burial of the mother of former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.

He credited it to the bad blood governance style of President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ambassador Timi Frank said that "Even in the death, the Yorubas of the south west are clearly avoiding the North due to the fear of being persecuted by the President. It is important to note that at the burial rites, we did not see or witness any visible presence of Muslim of the Yoruba ethnicity show solidarity with the former minister and Governor, not withstanding even under a Muslim-Muslim Presidency. Aren’t we supposed to be one Nigeria irrespective of ethnicity, tribe and religion? Even Mr Peter Obi of the Christian faith was present to show solidarity, so why then are the South western Yoruba Muslims absent at the burial of El-Rufai's mother?"
