I think a simpler alternative would be to use Payoneer.

Withdraw USD from Upwork to Payoneer and send that USD to your Grey GBP account (Payoneer will convert the funds for you)

It's pretty straight forward.

So Payoneer can send to grey now? It failed early this year. And I guess the names on both accounts must match?

You can start receiving payments with a brand new payoneer. I got my first kdp and fiverr payments on my brand-new account. You don't need to do that before getting paid from kdp or freelance platforms.

You'll have to write them and explain you just a publisher and they should remove that limit. I never had that when I opened my account.
