www.punchng.com/news/boko-haram-police-raid-illegal-immigrants-in-six-states/ The police have embarked on massive arrests of illegal immigrants in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Kwara, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa states, among others, as part of measures to prevent the Boko Haram terrorist group from spreading its attacks to the states. Saturday PUNCH learnt from a police source that the Force embarked on the arrests of large number of aliens in Lagos State as a way of flushing out those perceived to be security threats. This followed an attack allegedly carried out by a female suicide bomber in Apapa area of the state on June 25. The source indicated that hundreds of such aliens had been raided by the police from different parts of the state. Though Boko Haram has been operating only in northern Nigeria, latest security reports indicate that the sect’s foot soldiers had infiltrated other parts of the country. It was learnt that since the attack in Lagos, police as well as the Nigeria Immigration Service stepped up efforts armed at arresting illegal immigrants by visiting parks and areas heavily populated by these immigrants. But the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, told one of our correspondents that the arrest of the aliens and illegal immigrants was not unusual, describing it as a “routine.” She said, “It is not new. We go to uncompleted buildings regularly to raid aliens. It is just part of our normal exercise targeted at ridding the state of illegality.” Spokesperson for the Ogun State Police command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said, “We are aware that there may be pockets of Boko Haram insurgents here. We are working based on that knowledge. It is only sensible to think that if the North is becoming too hot for the insurgents, they may want to come down South. But the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, has put in place strategies for this reason. “Arresting illegal immigrants is just one of the many options available to us. Other security agencies are currently working with us on these strategies to ensure that we do not experience any violent attack.” Saturday PUNCH investigation also revealed that the police had embarked on about 50 raids of identified hot spots in Kwara State within the past six months to forestall the incursion of members of the Boko Haram fighters. The Police Public Relations Officer, Kwara State Command, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, stated that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ambrose Aisabor, had invigorated strategies aimed at preventing the deadly sect from infiltrating the state. He said, “We are not leaving any stone unturned to ensure that there is no infiltration of insurgents in the state. We have raided some hot spots in the state for over 50 times within the last six months. We have good relationship with members of the public who provide us with useful intelligence.” The Ondo State Police Command, in same vein, said that it was working with the Nigerian Immigration Service to ensure immigrants were scrutinised to prevent criminals from gaining access to vital areas and threatening the security of the state. The command’s spokesperson, Wole Ogodo, said, that viewing centres considered unsafe were advised to close down so that terrorists do not find them as soft spots to cause mayhem during the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Brazil. “It is not just a blanket shut down; we advised them not to open because such places may not be safe. It is an advice,” Ogodo said. In May, a joint taskforce in Akwa Ibom State raided markets and stalls in Itu and arrested dozens of immigrants who were later handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for verification and possible repatriation. Saturday PUNCH investigation revealed that 612 irregular immigrants were arrested in Akwa Ibom and repatriated to their various countries of origins in May, 2014. The state NIS Comptroller, Mr. Abdullahi Garba, in Uyo during the week warned employers of labour against patronising the services of irregular immigrants, adding that they might be baits used by terrorist groups to carry out attacks on innocent citizens. The Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Mr. Etim Dickson, said, “We have a bomb disposal unit that takes care of anything gaseous or more. Although this incidence has not occurred in the state, we have taken a number of precautions like positioning our bomb disposal unit in public places such as motor parks, churches, airports, seaports or any other place that attracts large gatherings.” According to Saturday PUNCH investigation, Oyo State Police Command are also working underground to rid the state of aliens, illegal immigrants and people of questionable characters. In the last few weeks, plain clothed policemen have been present at major markets and bus stations. They mingle with the crowd but look out for their targets. The targets are people who could be standing idly in public places. A detective, who asked not to be named, said, “The police will not tell you what they are doing to ensure security. Such information is classified. It is top secret. But one of the measures the police are putting in place is to pick people suspected of being idle, especially in markets, bus stops and public places where many people are found at the same time. That is the kind of target that the terrorists pick as target points in order to get maximum casualty figure. Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hilary Opara, said the police authorities in the state had sensitised members of the public to monitor their environment, homes and business premises. On raiding of aliens, the police boss said the command was liasing with the Immigration authorities in the state. Opara added, “Actually, the Nigeria Immigration Service has apprehended persons that do not have genuine papers residing in Bayelsa. “Those who have uncompleted buildings have been asked to either complete them or evict those living there illegally.” |

www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/soldiers-kill-rccg-pastor-injure-2-others-delta/ BY EMMA AMAIZE & AKPOKONA OMAFUAIRE OPURAJA — SOLDIERS have shot dead a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and injured about three others at the quiet Opuraja community in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State. The pastor said to be in his 30s was married with four children. A security source said the soldiers, led by a Captain, came in two Hilux vans to conduct investigation in the community, but were allegedly mobbed by villagers, who misconstrued their motive, as they took away vigilante leader and community chairman. The soldiers reportedly denied killing anybody, but admitted that they shot into the car when the villagers surged towards them. The Orodje of Okpe kingdom, HRM, Mujakperuo Orhue 1, a retired army officer, was said to have waded into the matter to calm frayed nerves after the fracas. He expressed his disappointment over the incident, saying the soldiers should not have fired at unarmed citizens. The monarch, however, pleaded with the community leadership and Okpe Local Local Government Transition Committee chair, Chief James Augoye, to find ways of resolving the issues amicably. Former Minister of Information, Prof. Sam Oyovbaire, who is from the community, confirmed that one person was killed and some persons injured, but said details were sketchy, as the soldiers claimed they fired to scare the crowd. A villager, who spoke to Vanguard said: “I saw the soldiers, they came to the community, asking for the chairman of the community and vigilante leader. They told them that there was robbery incident on Warri/Sapele expressway and asked them to reveal the identity of the person who owns the farm from which the bandits collected the wood they used to barricade the road. “They told the soldiers that none of the community people owns farm there, but the military men accused them of not doing their job effectively. “We saw the soldiers carry them away in their Hilux van and drove to the expressway, where they tied them against their vehicles until it was 6 a.m. “The youths mobilised and went to the scene where the community leaders were tied and when the army saw the crowd approaching, they started shooting indiscriminately. “A group of soldiers in another Hilux van apparently heard the gunshots and rushed to the scene, that was how the pastor, who was standing by was shot and he died immediately.” Opuraja community chairman, Mr Godwill Eyaguobor, said: “The youths in the community are not criminals, none has been caught robbing in the community or engaged in any act of violence.” |
www.punchng.com/news/dont-work-for-apc-jonathan-muazu-beg-oyinlola-2/ A former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, on Tuesday met behind closed doors with President Goodluck Jonathan inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja. A source close to the meeting said the former governor was begged by the President to support the PDP during the election. Oyinlola, a former National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, was led to the meeting with the President by the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu. The meeting, which lasted about an hour, was said to have discussed the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State and the disputed position of the PDP National Secretary, currently being occupied by Prof. Wale Oladipo. At the end of the meeting, Oyinlola told State House correspondents that Mu’azu brought him to meet with the President on how to improve the party’s fortunes. He also said he remained the party’s National Secretary in the eye of the law, describing “whoever is currently holding the office as a pretender.” The former governor said, “I was taken to the Villa by the Chairman of the PDP, and we had some discussions on to how to move the fortunes of the party forward. All I am telling you is that Oyinlola in the face of the law remains the authentic secretary of the PDP. Anybody in that office for now is a pretender!” He left the President’s office before Mu’azu. Some leaders of the All Progressives Congress had recently visited Oyinlola in his home town, Okuku, with a view to wooing him into their fold. The former governor was quoted as saying that his continued presence in the PDP would be decided by Jonathan. The source, who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the issue, said Oyinlola was asked at the meeting to support the candidate of the party, Senator Iyiola Omisore for the governorship election. He said, “The President pleaded with him to support Omisore and the party and also to help in the campaign of the party. “The President told him that he would want him (Oyinlola) to be present at the party’s campaign when he would be coming in order to give an assurance that he is with the PDP.” In response to the demand by Oyinlola that he be reinstated as the National Secretary of the PDP as ordered by the Court of Appeal, the President was said to have said that the issue would be looked into. It was also gathered that the President did not make any commitment on whether the PDP would be asked to withdraw its appeal on the issue, which is pending at the Supreme Court. Because of this, it was gathered that the former governor and his supporters were of the opinion that the President and the party wanted to use them to win the election and later abandon them. “We know the gimmick. We know the politics. We also know what they are up to. They want us to be committed to them and later abandon us. We are wiser,” the source added. Our correspondent also gathered that the President and the leadership of the party were not ready to trade away the current occupier of the office of the National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, who is the candidate of Omisore and PPP leader in the South- West, Alhaji Buruji Kashamu. |
www.punchng.com/news/well-not-yield-to-terror-jonathan/P President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday said his administration would remain unyielding in the face of terror attacks in parts of the country. The President said the Federal Government would continue to reinforce the nation’s defence with a view to ridding the country of terrorists who had been threatening the country’s peace and development. Jonathan spoke through Vice President Namadi Sambo at the opening of the 16th meeting of the Baroness Lynda Chalkerled Honorary International Investor Council, which held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He said, “This administration remains committed to ensuring security of lives and property of Nigerians and all those that reside in this country. “Our security forces are confronting terrorism and any insurgency that seeks to undermine the security of the nation. “We will remain unyielding and will continue to reinforce our defence so as to rid the country of terrorism and the forces of evil that threaten our peace and development.” Jonathan said that Nigeria’s position as the preferred destination for Foreign Direct Investment in Africa had been maintained despite the current security challenges, adding that his administration’s determination to ensure that Nigeria becomes one of the world’s 20 most industrialised nations had grown stronger. He said he would continue to take all necessary steps to enhance the competitiveness of Nigeria’s enterprises, having “significantly improved the nation’s investment climate.” The President said he was encouraged that the measures the government had taken were steadily contributing to the attainment of the broad objective of the administration’s transformation agenda and that he would not relent in efforts to sustain a predictable and stable policy environment. Jonathan said, “Let me reaffirm that our efforts under the transformation agenda are yielding impressive results. Today, Nigeria is one of the strongest economic performers in Africa. “For the second year, the United Nation’s Conference on Trade and Development has declared Nigeria as the number one recipient of Foreign Direct Investment in Africa. “In May this year, Nigeria hosted global leaders at the World Economic Forum on Africa. Besides the record attendance, prospective and sizeable additional investments into Nigerian economy were pledged.” Chalker said a situation where primary school children failed to complete their education was symptomatic of the level of problems in the country. This, she said, was the reason why the council would focus on education. “We do not have a separate session on power supply but we do know that Nigeria’s progress again depend on the gas reforms, the management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, fuel supply to power plants, speedy implementation of renewable energy and progress plan for developing domestic gas utilisation. Power and education are at the heart of what must be achieved,” she said. |
A revelation by a member of the National Conference that he had received a threat message from terrorists caused a scare at the confab on Monday. The delegate, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), told the conference that he received a message on his telephone threatening an “attack bigger than Nyanya blast” and sought the permission of the Chairman of the confab, Justice Idris Kutigi (retd.), to read the message. Kutigi granted the permission and Ozekhome accordingly read the text. The message, which Ozekhome also forwarded to our correspondent later, read, “News got to us that our enemy is planning something bigger than Nyanya blast between Tuesday and Wednesday, in Abuja. Mind your movement and be careful. The date is still unknown. Please, pass it around to save loved ones.” After listening to the text of the message, one of the delegates, who asked not to be named, shouted, “We are in trouble in this country. Bombing everywhere; when will this stop? Even here, we don’t know what is going to happen. Things are so bad in the country. Things are so bad.” Many of the delegates were seeing discussing the development in hushed tones but with panic on their faces. None of them was willing to speak with The PUNCH on the matter on Monday. Another delegate, Obi Onoliefo, had on Thursday last week, raised the issue of safety of delegates when, having looked at the perimeter of the National Judicial Institute, observed that there were no security operatives manning them. Onoliefo, therefore, called for security operatives to be drafted to the perimeter fences to forestall insurgents from breaking into the premises and causing bloodshed. Meanwhile, some hoodlums suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect invaded the Shani Local Government Area of Borno State on Monday and torched the Divisional Police Station, houses and shops. It was learnt that the insurgents used Improvised Explosive Devices and petrol bombs. The Caretaker Chairman of the council, Alhaji Modu Walama, who was said to have escaped a series of attacks by assassins and terrorists in recent past, narrowly escaped being killed by the terrorists. The insurgents were said to have attacked the family house of Walama in Walama and killed one of his sons. One of our correspondents learnt that the terrorists invaded Shani on motorcycles and bombed the divisional police headquarters at about 2:45pm on Monday. The policemen on duty had fled before the attackers reached the station. They were said to have snatched one of the patrol vehicles belonging to the police and set it ablaze after they discovered that the vehicle’s engine was faulty. The gunmen reportedly moved from the police station into the town and shot sporadically before fleeing towards the Gwaskara village. Shani is the southern part of the troubled Borno State and about 245 kilometres drive from Maiduguri, the state capital. It shares boundary with some parts of Adamawa State. A resident of Shani, Mallam Aliyu Usman, who was among those who fled the town during the attack, told journalists that they got news of the terrorists lurking around the town at about 8am. He said some women sighted the criminals on their farmlands around Walama, on the outskirts of the town. The terrorists were said to have scared the women off their farms, telling them that they had a deadly mission to execute in some places in Shani. All efforts to get the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Gideon Jubrin, for confirmation was not successful as his phone line was inaccessible as of the time of filing this report. www.punchng.com/news/boko-haram-confab-delegate-receives-attack-notice/ |
