PoliticsFani-kayode Lied On Alleged Comments By Party On Boko Haram – APC by paulworld(op): 5:28pm On Jun 30, 2014
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/06/fani-kayode-lied-alleged-comments-party-boko-haram-apc/
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked Mr.
Femi Fani-Kayode to retract his comment alleging
that the APC, through its National Publicity Secretary
Lai Mohammed, condemned the Federal Government
for proscribing the terror group Boko Haram or face a
legal action.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Monday by its
National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed,
the party said at no time did it issue a statement
condemning the proscription of Boko Haram, and
challenged Mr. Fani-Kayode to produce such a
statement if he was so sure the APC issue it.
It quoted Alhaji Lai Mohammed as saying: ”I have
caused my attorneys to formally write both Fani-
Kayode and Channel television, where he made his
allegation, to retract the statement and apologize,
failing which I will sue for defamation of character.”
”Our position on Boko Haram has been well
articulated for anyone who cares to know, but at no
time did we condemn the government for proscribing
it. When the state of emergency was declared on three
northern states, we criticized it and we stand by that.
But we did not condemn the proscription of Boko
Haram. We are not Boko Haram sympathizers and
we cannot be under any circumstance,” APC said.
The party also condemned Mr. Fani-Kayode’s
description of Boko Haram as the armed wing of the
APC, saying the statement is most irresponsible,
uncharitable and without basis.
”Equally irresponsible and condemnable is Mr. Fani-
Kayode’s deliberate distortion of statements made in
the past by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to mean that
he or his party is a sympathizer of Boko Haram,” the
party said.
It said Mr. Fani-Kayode’s latter day castigation of
opposition politicians, after he returned to his vomit
and repudiated all the damaging statements he
made publicly in the past about the PDP and the
Jonathan Administration, is not based on any
altruistic considerations.
”It is common knowledge that Mr. Fani-Kayode has
been charged by the Federal Government with money
laundering. The trial is almost ending, and he
knows he faces a certain jail term if convicted.
”It is therefore not impossible that Mr. Fani-Kayode
may be seeking to ingratiate himself to the FG by
using various media platforms to destroy the APC
through accusing its leaders of being Boko Haram
sponsors or that the party is bent on fielding a
Muslim/Muslim ticket in next year’s presidential
elections.
”Unfortunately, in his eagerness to please the FG and
cut a deal to avoid going to jail, he has resorted to
pathological lies aimed at calling the dog a bad
name in order to hang it. Whatever evidence he has
to prove that our party is a sponsor of Boko Haram,
he should be prepared to tender such in court,” APC
said.
PoliticsFear Of Boko Haram Attack Hits Conference by paulworld(op):
The fear of possible attack of members of the
national conference by Boko Haram enveloped the
conference on Monday when a delegate, Chief Mike
Ozekhome (SAN) said he received a message on his
telephone of a possible attack by members of the sect
in Abuja this week.Raising a matter of Public
Urgency, he asked for the permission of the
Chairman of the Conference, Justice Idris Kutigi to
read the message. He was granted the permission. The
message, which he also sent to our correspondent
read, ” News got to us that our enemy is planning
something bigger than Nyayan bomb blast between
Tuesday and Wednesday in Abuja.“Mind your
movement and be careful. The date is still unknown.
Please, pass it around to save loved ones.”Some
delegates later discussed the issue among themselves,
wondering when the bombings would stop. One of
the delegate, who spoke on condition of anonymity
said, “We are in trouble in this country. Bombings
everywhere. When will this stop?“Even here, we don’t
know what is going to happen. Things are so bad in
the country. Things are so bad.”Only last Thursday,
a delegate, Obi Onoliefo had raised the issue of
safety of delegates when, having looked at the
perimeter wall of the National Judicial Institute,
observed that there were no security operatives
manning them. He, therefore, called for security
operatives to be drafted to the perimeter fences to
forestall insurgents from breaking into the premises
and causing bloodshed.Meanwhile, delegates began
the deliberation on the report of the Political Parties
and Electoral Matters, on Monday. The report, which
was made available to our correspondent
recommended that the Independent National
Electoral Commission should stop deleting political
parties. While adding that political parties should be
allowed to grow, it also said that government
should not fund political parties. Some of the
recommendations are that, “Political party
leadership and administration should be insulated
from undue control and interference from chief
executives of government at all levels, so that party
independence is restored. In so doing.“The wishes of
the party members as expressed through their voted
will be reflected in the party administration.”The
committee also recommended that rather than
scrapping of State Independent Electoral
Commissions, efforts should be made to strengthen
them with a view to making them more effective, as
well as improving their credibility. It added that
provision should be made for the financial indecent
of SIECs by giving them a first line charge in the
state’s budget. That issues relating to the composition
and administration of SIECs should be activated
through a law of the State House of Assembly. It
added that, “State Houses of Assembly,y should
legislate the details of the composition and
administration of SIECs as well as confirm their
members.“State houses of assembly should legislate
the tenure of elected local government officials.”On
judiciary, it said that Federal High Court should be
renamed and redesigned as constitutional court of
Nigeria, adding the jurisdiction and powers of the
Federal High Court should be transferred to the
National Industrial Court. On death or withdraw of
a candidate, the committee recommended that where
a candidate dies or withdraws from the election, the
political party which nominated “that candidate
shall submit to the commission the name of the
candidate who scored the second highest number if
voted at the primaries as the substitute candidate.”It
added that where such “a dead or disqualified
candidate may have emerged by consensus, fresh
primaries should be held to determine the new
representative of the party.

PoliticsMuslims Not Terrorists – Oloyede by paulworld(op): 6:48am On Jun 30, 2014
ABUJA—Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Secretary-General,
Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA,
has called on security agencies in the country to be
fair and professional in the discharge of their duties.
Oloyede who gave the advice while delivering a
keynote address at the 9th Ramadan Lecture of
Muslim Media Professionals of Nigeria (MMPN) in
Abuja described the security situation in the country
as serious. The Islamic leader said Muslims in
Nigeria were for peace as long as there was justice
and fairness, adding, “Muslims are not responsible
for the violence in the country. Muslims are for peace.
If there is any problem, it is a failure of the system.”
The NSCIA scribe said there “cannot be peace without
justice. Our appeal is that Federal Government should
be just to all segments of the society.” Oloyede said
in the spirit of the theme of the lecture, “Peace and
Leadership: The Missing Link”, there should be more
consultation and dialogue among the stakeholders
in the country.
Speaking on the theme of the lecture, the guest
speaker, Prof. Musa Abdur-Raheem said that for
peace to reign there must be justice.
“Boko Haram are not representing Islam, Muslims
are for peace and most of the victims of Boko Haram
attacks are Muslims,” he said.
He called on the leaders in the country to live up to
expectations by urgently addressing the nation’s
security challenges.
Abdur-Raheem advised all groups to channel their
grievances through legal means.
Declaring the event open, a representative of Gov.
Babangida Aliyu of Niger, Alhaji Hamidu Kadi-
kuta, called on the populace to take steps in tackling
the nation’s security challenges.
Aliyu described as unfortunate the security challenges
in the country, saying it would slow down
developments.
The governor also called on the Muslims to use the
Ramadan period to pray for the peace and unity of
the country.
Earlier, Chairman of the Association, Abdurrahman
Balogun, urged politicians in the country to play
politics according to the rules of the game.
“As 2015 general elections approaches, politicians
should play the game according to the rules.
“Fear Allah in all their dealings and remember that
everyone will account for all deeds in the hereafter,”
Balogun said.

PoliticsAttacks Blamed On Boko Haram This Year by paulworld(op): 6:39am On Jun 30, 2014
LAGOS (AFP) – A number of churches in northeast
Nigeria were attacked by suspected Boko Haram
Islamists on Sunday, near the town of Chibok where
more than 200 teenage girls were kidnapped in April.
Witnesses say they fear that yet again, dozens have
been killed.
Here are some of the deadly raids, kidnappings and
bombings that have been linked to Boko Haram this
year:
- February 15, 2014: An attack blamed on the
extremist sect leaves more than 100 people dead in the
mostly Christian village of Izghe in the north-eastern
state of Borno.
- April 14: Gunmen kidnap 276 female high school
students in Chibok, Borno. Fifty-seven managed to
escape but the rest are still being held. Several foreign
countries, including the United States, have joined
forces to try to find the girls.
- April 14: A blast at a bus station packed with
morning commuters at Nyanya, on the southern
outskirts of Abuja, kills at least 75 people, the most
deadly attack to date on the capital. Boko Haram
claims responsibility. On May 1, a car bomb at the
same spot kills 19, and leaves 80 injured.
- May 5: At least 300 people are killed in an attack
in Gamboru Ngala, in Borno state near the border
with Cameroon, which totally destroys the town.
- May 20: At least 118 are killed and 56 injured in
two car bomb attacks on a market in Jos, central
Nigeria, which go off within 20 minutes of each
other. The regional governor blames Boko Haram.
- June 1: At least 40 are killed when a bomb explodes
at a football stadium in Mubi in the north-east of
the country shortly after a match. The attack is
blamed on Boko Haram.
- June 3: Hundreds are feared dead in a suspected
Boko Haram attack on four villages in Borno state,
with local leaders putting the death toll as high as
500.
- June 17: 21 football fans are killed when a bomb
rips through the viewing centre where they are
watching the World Cup in Damaturu, northern
Nigeria.
- June 24: Local officials report 30 killed and more
than 60 women kidnapped in a series of attacks over
several days in Borno state, although the Nigerian
government denies the abductions.
- June 25: At least 21 people are killed and 17 injured
in a bombing at a crowded shopping centre in the
centre of Abuja. The attack — the third on the city in
three months — is blamed on Boko Haram.
- June 29: Suspected Boko Haram gunmen riding on
motorcycles target a number of churches during
Sunday mass, opening fire on worshippers and
chasing them into the bush. Witnesses fear dozens are
killed.

PoliticsWe Don't Know Where Chibok Girls Are - US by paulworld(op): 6:32am On Jun 30, 2014
www.punchng.com/news/we-dont-know-where-chibok-girls-are-us/

The United States said on Friday it had decreased its surveillance flights in the search for the about 219 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram, but added that the overall effort was unchanged due to more flights by other countries.

It stated that it had no idea of the location of the girls, noting however that there is no letup in the efforts to locate and rescue them.

“We don’t have any better idea today than we did before about where these girls are, but there’s been no letup of the effort itself,” Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters, according to Reuters.

Kirby said the same level of effort was being sustained now through international involvement.

A US defence official speaking on condition of anonymity said American flights had been reduced only after a body of intelligence had been gathered and that the cuts had been offset by the British and the French support.

Kirby denied a suggestion that US flights over Nigeria had been reduced to accommodate increased US surveillance over Iraq, where Washington is flying unmanned and manned aircraft to gather intelligence about Sunni insurgents.

He said some of the resources that were being used in Nigeria had been diverted from other missions in Africa and could now be used elsewhere on the continent.

Officials declined to say how long heightened U.S. surveillance over Nigeria had lasted.

Asked whether it was just a week or two, the defence official said, “No. We were building this baseline for a good period of time.”

US surveillance flights over Nigeria were now intermittent, the source said.

US military personnel are in Abuja helping to coordinate the effort, and some 80 others were sent to Chad in May to support the surveillance operation.

Chad is northeast of Nigeria and borders the area in which Boko Haram is known to operate.

In the last month, US officials had played down expectations about a swift rescue of the girls and stressed the limitations of intelligence from surveillance flights.

One US official voiced concerns that Boko Haram might have booby-trapped areas where the girls could be held, and there had been reports that they might have been split up into groups that were not being held in one place.

The defence official said surveillance alone would not lead to a resolution. “It will take the Nigerian piece of the equation with their own sources and human intelligence coupled with the other forms to really understand the picture,” he noted.

In an opinion piece in the Washington Post on Friday, President Goodluck Jonathan said his government and security services had “spared no resources, have not stopped and will not stop until the girls are returned home.”
