Benin City is a city (2006 est. pop. 1,147,188) and
the capital of Edo State in southern Nigeria. It
is a city approximately 40 kilometres (25 mi)
north of the Benin River. It is situated 320
kilometres (200 mi) by road east of Lagos. Benin
is the centre of Nigeria's rubber industry, but
processing palm nuts for oil is also an
important traditional industry. [1]
History
The original people and founders of the Benin
Empire, the Edo people, were initially ruled by
the Ogiso (Kings of the Sky) dynasty who called
their land Igodomigodo. The rulers or kings
were commonly known as Ogiso. Igodo, the first
Ogiso, wielded much influence and gained
popularity as a good ruler. He died after a
long reign and was succeeded by Ere, his eldest
son. In the 12th century, a great palace
intrigue and battle for power erupted between
the warrior crown prince Ekaladerhan son of
the last Ogiso and his young paternal uncle. In
anger over an oracle, Prince Ekaladerhan left
the royal court with his warriors. When his
old father the Ogiso died, the Ogiso dynasty
was ended as the people and royal kingmakers
preferred their king's son as natural next in
line to rule.
The exiled Prince Ekaladerhan, who was not
known in Yoruba land, somehow earned the title
of Oni Ile-fe Izoduwa which is now corrupt to
yoruba language as Ooni (Oghene) of Ile-Ife
Oduduwa and refused to return, then sent his
son Oranmiyan to become king. Prince Oranmiyan
took up his abode in the palace built for him
at Usama by the elders (now a coronation
shrine). Soon after his arrival he married a
beautiful lady, Erinmwinde, daughter of Osa-
nego, was the ninth Enogie (Duke) of Ego, by
whom he had a son. After some years residence
here he called a meeting of the people and
renounced his office, remarking that the
country was a land of vexation, Ile-Ibinu (by
which name the country was afterward known)
and that only a child born, trained and
educated in the arts and mysteries of the land
could reign over the people. He caused his son
born to him by Erinmwinde to be made King in
his place, and returned to Yoruba land Ile-Ife.
After some years in Ife, he left for Oyo, where
he also left a son behind on leaving the place,
and his son Ajaka ultimately became the first
Alafin of Oyo of the present line, while
Oranmiyan himself was reigning as Oni of Ife.
Therefore, Oranmiyan of Ife, the father of
Eweka I, the Oba of Benin, was also the father
of Ajaka, the first Alafin of Oyo. Oni of Ife
and Alafe of Oyo is a Bini spoken language all
the Kings title in Southerner are Edo
Language. In Nigeria Edo has the greatest and
rich culture and most influence in West Africa
and powerful King in Nigeria. Allegedly Oba
Eweka later changed the name of the city of
Ile-Binu, the capital of the Benin kingdom, to
"Ubinu." This name would be reinterpreted by
the Portuguese as "Benin" in their own
language. Around 1470, Ewuare changed the
name of the state to Edo. [2] This was about the
time the people of Okpekpe migrated from Benin
City.
The Portuguese visited Benin City around 1485.
Benin grew rich during the 16th and 17th
centuries due to trade within southern
Nigeria, as well as through trade with
Europeans, mostly in pepper and ivory. In the
early 16th century the Oba sent an ambassador
to Lisbon, and the King of Portugal sent
Christian missionaries to Benin. Some residents
of Benin could still speak a pidgin Portuguese
in the late 19th century. Many Portuguese loan
words can still be found today in the
languages of the area.
On 17 February 1897, Benin City fell to the
British.[1] In the "Punitive Expedition ", a
1,200-strong British force, under the command
of Admiral Sir Harry Rawson , conquered and
razed the city after all but two men from a
previous British expeditionary force led by
Acting Consul General Philips were killed.[3]
Alain Boisragon, one of the survivors of the
Benin Massacre, includes references to the
practice of human sacrifice in the city in a
firsthand account written in 1898 (one year
after the Punitive Expedition). [4] James D.
Graham notes that although "there is little
doubt that human sacrifices were an integral
part of the Benin state religion from very
early days," firsthand accounts regarding
such acts often varied significantly, with some
reporting them and others making no mention of
them. [5]
The " Benin Bronzes ", portrait figures, busts
and groups created in iron , carved ivory , and
especially in brass (conventionally called
"bronze"wink, were taken from the city by the
British and are currently displayed in various
museums around the world. [1] Some of the
bronzes were auctioned off to compensate for
the expenses incurred during the invasion of
the city. Most of these artifacts can be found
today in British museums and other parts of
the world. In recent years, various appeals
have gone to the British government to return
such artifacts. The most prominent of these
artifacts was the famous Queen Idia mask used
as a mascot during the Second Festival of Arts
Culture (FESTAC '77) held in Nigeria in 1977 now
known as "Festac Mask".
The capture of Benin paved the way for British
military occupation and the merging of later
regional British conquests into the Niger Coast
Protectorate , the Protectorate of Southern
Nigeria and finally, into the Colony and
Protectorate of Nigeria. The British permitted
the restoration of the Benin monarchy in 1914,
but true political power still lay with the
colonial administration of Nigeria.
Following Nigeria's independence from British
rule in 1960, Benin City became the capital of
Mid-Western Region when the region was split
from Western Region in June 1963; it remained
the capital of the region when the region was
renamed Bendel State in 1976, and became the
state capital of Edo State when Bendel was
split into Delta and Edo states in 1991.

Mr "common sense" don open mouth again oooo. B4 we start arguing if what he said makes sense or not, I want to disagree with the statement that teachers are not well paid as someone said. Go to Lagos state n c d kind of cars these teachers drive to school, then tell me if a poor man drives such. I'm serving in Nasarawa n I can boldly tell u that teachers r being paid very very well.... Infact in my PPA, I have teachers earning 150k n above n our principal earns about 300k per month... Aside payments for marking WAEC N NECO n invigilation n science teachers that teach in private schools also; new teachers (B.Sc) earn between 60-70 depending on subject (science teachers earn more) n HND earn 50k for starters....... Note this z Nasarawa where students r compelled to come to school through free education n d main teaching z done by corpers n student teachers (TP)................. Bottom line of this jargon I wrote z, he might b right to criticise d sharing of biscuits to the students but shouldn't hide under d shadow of 'because of poor teachers salary' cos d reward of teachers starts here on earth in Nigeria........ #EXCEPT U R TALKING OF OYO OR ONE OF THOSE BACKWARD STATES#
You are right and i am happy you acknowledge the situation in Oyo state is different. My question now is; What made Oyo situation different? The governor is only good at blaming the teachers in his state for poor performance of Oyo state students in external exams like WAEC,NECO. He has recently extended the closing hours from 2pm to 4pm yet you refused to pay their salaries as at when due. There will always be poor performance until teachers welfare are taken into consideration.

This is the worst of this man' s common sense nonsense, teachers are already well paid , Obasanjo made sure of that . You need to go to any government school and see how their car park compete with that of bankers . I even thought the man will talk if teacher training. Infrastructure and learning aids. Your common sense nonsense is now just noise from a biased opposition
That was before this government came to power. Its not that teachers are well paid but they are people that have learnt how to use their limited resources well. Have you asked how it was possible for teachers to buy cars and build houses. First reason is that teaching is a profession dominated by women, so more than 60% of those cars you see belongs to women in that profession which is made possible by their husbands in other noble profession. Second reason is that majority of them are on loan, you hardly see a teacher who is not oweing bank or cooperative loan and at the end of the month they go home with very small salary because their debt has been deducted by their banks or cooperative. And now no bank is giving out loans to them again since the inception of this government because of non-payment of salary, the same with cooperatves cos many of them are having difficulties with money. it is not possible to ride a good car, build a house from their salaries if they dont take loans. My junior brother is a teacher in oyo state and he is on level 12 (a level he has been since 2009 because oyo state refused to promote them) and he earns less than 85k having worked for 16 years. So, how are they well paid? And even the last salary paid by the state was october 2015. The government has only paid leave bonus of November 2014. This is a terrain i know much about. I was surprised the day i saw my brothers salary. 16 years in service as a graduate and you earn that ridiculous amount. Those are things i think government should try to correct before embarking on feeding the students.
I am using Oyo State as an example in this response

Continue to fool yourself. so, people will just come to school environment, enter classrooms and start distributing biscuits to students abi? Its obvious you have no idea how things are run in a school system.
Another angle is that government should be careful so that their enemy or opposition will not use that program against them. It reminds me of Akala regime in Oyo state when parents started running to schools to pick their children because of insinuations that some students ate Indomie akala sent to schools and they died.
Personally, i still don't believe that is what we need to improve the standard of our primary education.

I thought this distinguished Tweenator said he wanted to make commonsense. Was he not the one encouraging us to patronize made in aba products some days ago? Has he forgotten that that biscuit they are talking about is not just ordinary one that can just be picked in the market? Infact that biscuit is a product of years of research in FIIRO to correct malnutrition in children. It's a case of using a stone to kill two birds - 1) improves nutritional values of food in children and 2) support the local industry and farmers by giving it to NASCO to produce.

So, distinguished Tweenator, that biscuit is solving so many problems at a time:

It is correcting malnutrition in our children;
It will solve the problem of low enrollment in basic education;
It will provide direct and indirect jobs for our teeming youth;
It will give impetus to agric sector developments because of the value chain involved in its production;
It will help revive some of our ailing industries in general and beverage in particular; and
It will help boost our local production as against sourcing that biscuit from abroad.

Sometimes our distinguished Tweenator, it is good to take your time to study a particular scheme very well so that you may not end up like one ineffectual buffoon. If this is the type of commonsense that you want to make, I think without doubt, there is a problem at hand. So much for a commonsense by a distinguished Tweenator.
You tried, but you would have made more sense by acknowledging the senators sentiment. All what you listed will not be achievable if the government fail to treat teachers well. This is practical and i have witnessed more than two situations where teacher eats the food taken to school by the student. Put yourself in that situation. Imagine you are owed 4, 6 months salary by the government and the same government is now giving you food to deliver to students, what will happen to the food?

Now, here is a simple question for you and your likes on here who love to run their dirty little fingers typing and filling up the worldwideweb with LIES drawn from the pit of HELL. You shamelessly claim that Lagos is yorubaland, now my question is, what is the yoruba name or title for Lagos? EKO? which is undoubtedly EDO(quarter or camp) or LAGOS which is Portuguese for lake. If Lagos is yorubaland like you all unashamedly claim everywhere, then tell the world why you have no name or title for that piece of real estate that is indigenous to you loud-mouthed yorubas. Ibadan is yorubaland no doubt same as Abeokuta, Illorin (funny) or Ijebu ode. Those are yoruba names or titles and thats why i challenge you to use this opprtunity to tell the WORLD your yoruba name or title for LAGOS or forever keep quiet when history and not FABLES is discussed anywhere. The Great OBAS of Benin are way and above any title or appellation you choose to hang on any of your yoruba ruler. By the way, ever cared to ask yourself why you have so many ADOS eg Ado Ekiti appended to your yoruba towns and cities? Go ask the Dahomians why they by-passed all of yorubaland to seek permission from the great OBA of Benin to rename the country the republic of BENIN and not the republic of Ijebu ode, Ibadan or Abeokuta. AnnaKareninaFan:
Following the statement credited to the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo that the Oba of Benin is the third in the ranking of kings in the South-West region, the Palace of the Oba of Benin has dismissed this as untrue. The Esogban of Benin and Odionwere of the Kingdom (traditional head), Chief David Edebiri, yesterday, made this disclosure, adding that the Ooni of Ife was a son of the Oba of Benin, and the stool of the Oba of Benin could not be compared with that of any Yoruba King.

Esogban, who is third in command in the palace of the Oba of Benin, said: “We wanted to discard this report as something that was not necessary at all. We do not see how the Alake of Egbaland suddenly woke up to think that the Oba of Benin is also a Yoruba Oba. There is no basis for such classification; Oba of Benin has nothing to do with the Yoruba Obas. It is simply unnecessary, unless they simply want to stir up an unnecessary controversy.

“We are not in Yorubaland. To be frank, it is because many of them are not willing to come up with the truth, the word Oba is alien to Yoruba monarchy; it is not part of their title from time immemorial. For instance, the one they call the Oba of Lagos, these are recent adaptations. In the 50s, there was no Oba of Lagos, what we had was the Eleko of Eko. That is the title of the King there. In Ibadan, you have the Olu Ibadan. You come to Abeokuta, you have the Alake of Egbaland. You come to Oyo, you have the Alaafin of Oyo. In Ilesha, you have the Owa-Obokun of IIesha. So no Yoruba monarch had as part of his titles the word Oba except the Oba of Benin.

“That word Oba is indigenous to Benin. It is only in recent times you find everybody bearing Oba. When the Western Regional conference of traditional rulers took place in Benin City in 1942, go and check the attendance, there was no other monarch in the whole of the Western Region then that bore the title of Oba, except the Oba of Benin. So it is an unnecessary excursion, an unnecessary attempt to turn history upside down by the Alake by classifying the Oba of Benin as third in the hierarchy of kings. Our own traditional history says that the Ooni of Ife was a Benin Prince who wandered from here to Ife, settled there and became the ruler there. That is the position, if they don’t know, they should send people here; we will teach them.

“We will show them landmarks. So this is unnecessary misrepresentation of history. Maybe the Alake wanted to mention a different place and not Benin. The monarchical rulership in this part of the world started from Benin during the era of the Ogisos. It was the son of the last Ogiso, Owodo, that wandered from here to Ife and he became a ruler there, carrying everything about the Benin monarchical system to that place. There is no basis for such classification. The Ooni of Ife by historical facts, is a son of the Oba of Benin, so they are not in the same class. The Oba of Benin is the only one that answers Oba, the rest don’t. But today, we hear Oba here and there, they are all recent adaptations. I am saying categorically that the word Oba is indigenous to Benin and not to Yoruba nation.”

This old man is mixing things up. There is a difference between Name and Title. The kings in yorubaland are generally(all) called Oba while they all have individual titles. Even God or creator is a king (Oba Ayeraye) but his name is Jehova. Jesus Christ is a king ( He was even called Oba Awon Jew).
