ivandragon: Lol. You have been throwing insults from your first comment to me, why stop now.
I know you are a blockhead & skilled at skewing issues.
First, my initial comment was about how government uses its failure to justify increase in fuel prices.
https://punchng.com/fg-blames-smugglers-for-fuel-scarcity/
The point is, the FG shifted the financial problem to Nigerians rather than doing its sworn duty of defending its territory from external sabotage. You have conveniently excused the government on that responsibility.
Secondly, I clearly stated that in time, 'normal service' will resume. This is not the first time government has used the excuse of cross border smuggling to justify imposing hardship on Nigerians. So what makes you think it will be different?
https://saharareporters.com/2018/04/18/falana-seeks-explanation-fuel-subsidy-increase-n261-billion-n14-trillion
You people argue prices will come down due to competition, so what happens when the so called expected competition kicks in? The smuggling resumes. In other words, government is purposefully making Nigerians pay higher than needed to discourage smuggling...
I know somewhere in your elementary economic mind, you will justify government's insensitivity & ineptitude. If you check my comment, you'll found out that I SD tay edit that the policy will pose hardship on the citizens but it has to be embarked on. What govt needs to do is to provide succor to the citizens. |

How does number of immigration agencies a yardstick to smuggling where even the most powerful country, US which spent more than our whole budget on security alone still have issue of smuggling of drugs and migration across their land border especially through Mexico. You people should start thinking and stop asking everything, it doesn't make sense at al |

ivandragon: Sentiments devoid of logic. I often class your ilk amongst the 'four legs good, two legs bad' group. Persons who regurgitate what they are spoon-fed.
Someone had asked you to state what percentage of fuel was smuggled that the government was so quick to blame smuggled fuel as part of the reasons for scarcity & subsidy increases.
Do you even understand demand & supply in economics?
If a marketer makes N100pl profit on unsubsidized fuel in Nigeria, what do you think will happen when such marketer can make twice that if the product is taken out of Nigeria? Fuel in those countries have always been more expensive than in Nigeria. Why must Nigerians now be made to suffer the consequences?
Has the US now decided to allow illicit drugs to be sold freely because it has border control issues? Doesn't it still try to curtail illicit trafficking rather than passing the burden directly to its citizens?
Well, some of you have your reasons for justifying the ineptitude & fraud of government, so enjoy your delusion. Your reasoning is below average, sorry I don't mean insult. As of May, 06, official fuel price in Benin was 650.00CFA(legally imported ones) while black markets(those ones from smugglers) sell at 450.00CFA. This made locals to patronize them better than the feeling stations. After fuel removal, as of 12th June, it rose to as high as 800.00CFA while the official pump price stood at between 650_700CFA. 1. Now, tell me, as it stands now, which will you go for if you're in Benin? 2. Ask yourself, what made smuggled fuel cheaper than the official ones when there was subsidy and then skyrocketed to almost twice when it's removed in Nigeria? You and I know that anything black market is always costlier than the official ones but the reverse is the case here. This is to show the level of parasitism going on to our own detriment. Try to do research before coming online to disgrace yourself claiming Economist |

ivandragon: I doubt you know anything at all.
You are talking about associated costs of delivering fuel to neighboring countries. All those expenses will be transferred to the end users. As long as there is demand, there will be supply. Maximum expenses (risks), maximum rewards.
Or why do you think people still smuggle drugs to countries like Saudi Arabia? Has the death penalty dissuaded such dealers?
Where there is business to be done, it will be done.
Besides, settling of security agents will even be less expensive since the marketers can now freely move their products. After all, it is their own loss right?
What government should have done is secure its borders first & stop the smuggling in the first place. Okay, do you know that there are legally recognized marketers on those countries who engage in fuel importation? But locals leave theirs and patronize the smuggled ones because it's cheaper. Note that it's made cheaper than the legally imported ones because it has been subsidized by Nigerian govt. Now that the subsidy is gone, it'll be costlier than the one they sell in their feeling station s(the one legally the). Imagine the cost a importation to Nigeria and to those of other countries, which is costlier? Then you have brought it to Nigeria, you want to transport it again to other African countries with some other expenses. Do you think the it will be cheaper than the ones imported directly into the countries by their marketers?? Please, don't be clever by half. Even US are still having uncontrollable inflow of migrants and drugs from Mexico across their land border, and you're here projecting rocket science. If you can't see lapses in subsidy, then you have no reason to be in politics session rather romance session. |

If you say that "immigration agencies" allow smugglers to allow fuel products across the border, how then is fuel Subsidy now the culprit? Fuel subsidy is the culprit to smuggling because it's the reason these people carries the fuel to neighboring countries to gain from double sources_ the govt and the higher cost in those countries. A son was given #1000 to use and cook for his siblings and given #500 for his own meal by his father. After the cooking, the boy decided to sell some part of the food and made extra #300 for himself while the siblings were half_fed because of food shortage emanating from his defiance to his father's instruction. |

ivandragon: Dumb clowns talking about sense.
Won't fuel in Nigeria still be cheaper than in those other countries?
What has simply happened is that fuel has become more expensive in those countries. After a while, all the brouhaha will settle & normal service will resume.
Why will a marketer sell at 600 in nigeria when he can sell at 1000 in a neighbouring country? Business men ALWAYS seek to maximize profits.
Rather than the government securing its borders, it choses to pass the burden to the citizens.
But since your economics schooling stopped at SS1, I am not surprised. You don't know anything in your field of study if you continued with economics after SS1. Anyone smuggling fuel from Nigeria to the neighboring country after this subsidy removal is not harming the govt nor the citizens. He's just engaging himself on more expenses n that's why you see fuel costlier in those countries than it's right now in Nigeria. Cost of transport, distributors, rubbing secuty agencies' palms are the things that contributed to the higher price which the subsidy money covers, n no one will like to engage on it again since free money from the govt is gone. |
Politics › Re: Cameroon, Niger, Benin Citizens Lament Fuel Subsidy Removal In Nigeria by Peacecore: 11:21am On Jun 17, 2023 |
lexy2014: How does smuggling cause scarcity?
How did the smuggled fuel make it across the nigerian border into Cameroon, Niger and Benin? Okay lemme answer you; the government knows the daily consumption of fuel and subsidizes imported products based on that statistics. Now, when it's imported into the country for our use, greed make them to do divert chunks of it to the neighboring countries since they'll sell it costlier than govt's projected price. This action leads to shortage of our daily supply n thereby increase the price. For your second question, our corrupt immigration agencies get paid by these smugglers n some are done in part of the border not manned by security agencies. Now that the fuel subsidy that been removed though poses hardship to the citizens, those corrupt security agencies won't get that bribe any longer because smuggling of fuel will the abandoned by the perpetrators, thanks. |

Kukutenla: The same old rehashed tales to titillate Zombies
That's what I've been saying. For a whole year, what customs intercepted is less than a million litres while we consume over 60m litres per day. So any average brain can see the the amount being smuggled is infinitely insignificant compared to Nnpc figures of our consumption to make a huge difference, the type being claimed. Note also that most of those being interviewed live in the border towns and the price has gone up there as well by twice the new price here. So the smuggling market is still very active The smuggling market will cease on it's own. They smuggled those products because they have been subsidized by the govt so they're eating free money from the govt and selling it costlier to those neighboring countries than it should be sold in Nigeria. Now that the free money has been removed, it's either you import to Nigeria or you import to other African countries legally. You can't afford to pay import duty to import to Nigeria, and then bribe the border forces to get it to neighboring countries, what do you stand to gain?? |
Politics › Re: Cameroon, Niger, Benin Citizens Lament Fuel Subsidy Removal In Nigeria by Peacecore: 9:08am On Jun 17, 2023 |
ivandragon: Going by APC's logic, we should expect fuel prices to go up to 1k per litre in Nigeria since one of the excuses for subsidy removal is that the product was being smuggled to other countries where they sold at higher prices. Are you sure you have sense?? Smuggling of already subsidized fuel into neighboring countries causes scarcity, and the lower the supply(scarcity) in an increased demand increases the price. Now that those marketers have nothing to gain smuggling it to neighboring countries, fuel will yapa in the country making it more competitive due to high supply while the demand will remain the same, simple SS1economics! |

Airlines sell tickets in naira and want to repatriate in usd, in that case, they will wait until we have enough forex or take the naira like Russia did with EU. Emefiele is generally seen not to be doing things right but when he was encouraging them to invest in Nigerian export and keep 100% of the export proceeds overseas, he was doing protectionism not running free market.
The Asians doing business in Nigeria innovated and were able to move their profits out and that's why you do not see them complaining like those from the west who mostly want to come in briefcase to Nigeria to pack forex back home.
For years now, most of the cargo planes bringing goods to Nigeria go back empty and not until NAHCO got an Indian MD did these airlines realise they can partner with NAHCO to take Nigerian goods for export and since our CBN policy under Emefiele allows you to keep your export proceeds, they get paid from the export proceeds of NAHCO.
In business, if you don't innovate you die. Nigeria will not be a dumping ground and we will not open our stock exchange to unfettered free entry and free exit of hot money or proceeds of illicit funds.
They should bring in the forex as FDI like they were forced to do by Emefiele then grow and create value here, sell and repatriate real profits home.
Not for them to come in, pump Zenith bank share price to N120 from N30 then dump on Nigerians and take the naira capital gain to CBN , get USD and repatriate, creating no value for us and our economy. Good explanation! Are you an economist? |

Why the urge to quickly float the naira without plans? Do we have sufficient USD to flood the market and meet the FX demands in the near term? If people cannot walk into the bank and buy USD without filling forms A, M etc.... its only little time before USD exchanges for 1000 naira
On fuel subsidy, Why should the masses bear the responsibility of the inefficiency of the FG?,
why can’t the FG protect the boarders to ensure subsidized PMS does not get to neighboring countries?
Why has the FG not prosecuted and jailed anyone involved in the subsidy fraud to stop others from doing so?,
The claim that subsisdy is a burden is fallacy cos the subsidizing the actual consumption of less than 10million liters per day is not a burden compared to the FG’s current fraudulent claim of 66million liters per day. Why not a gradual removal of the subsidy?
Where is the savings from Diesel and kerosene subsidy and what has it been used for?
The student loan bill is a plot by the Tinubu led FG t to stop funding tertiary education in Nigeria leading to the end all education subsidy. Who do you think are the final beneficiaries of these moves, same criminals who will end up looting the funds meant to fund the tertiary education.
What exactly is the role of the Nigerian FG if they relinquish every responsibility to the masses? What sacrifice has the political class made in all these mess? Have their allowances being reduced? Any efforts at stopping the lootings?
All Tinubu has done is to transfer responsibilities to the already suffering Nigerian Masses to ensure there is enough for him and his goons that supported him into office Well, you have said nothing |
