The Phnom Penh Appeal Court has upheld the life sentence given by the municipal court to two Nigerian men, a Filipina and Cambodian woman, in connection with smuggling of more than 2.5 kilogrammes of cocaine from Brazil to Cambodia in 2014.

Presiding Judge Ky Rithy said, “After having a clear consideration in this case, the Judges’ Council of the Phnom Penh Appeal Court has found that the sentences given by the Phnom Penh Appeal Court is appropriate and fit for their offence."
The four convicts have the rights to appeal against the judgement to the Supreme Court within a month.

Judge Ky Rithy named the four as 49-year-old former nurse from Philippines Macoy Mavill Villamor; Nigerian cloth vendors Emmanuel Thankgod, male, 41; and Michael Sunshine, male, 39; and Cambodian Meng Sinuon, 38, a former waitress working with a French-owned-restaurant living in Chamkar Mon district’s Phsar Doeum Thkov commune
Macoy was sentenced on September 16, 2014 by the Municipal Court with a life sentence while Sunshine got 30 years, Thankgod 27 years, and Meng Sinuon got 22 years in prison. Besides, all the convicts were slapped with fine of $10,000 each.

They were charged with ‘drug transport and trafficking’ under Article 40 of the Law on Drug Control.

Macoy was arrested on February 12, 2014 at the Phnom Penh International Airport in a joint operation by the police in the anti-drug department at the Ministry of Interior, the excise and customs police officers and immigration police.

Police seized a total of 2,513 grammes of cocaine powders from Macoy and her confession led to the arrest of Nigerians who arrived to receive the drug from her.

THE pan-Yoruba socio- organisation, Afenifere, has urged Nigerians to disregard information from any social media account claiming to belong to Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

The organisation’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, said in a statement on Sunday that the Twitter account which some electronic and online media quoted from did not belong to Adebanjo or any of the Afenifere leaders.

“It is hereby being clearly stated that Chief Adebanjo has no social media account of any sort, be it Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.

“Whenever he has anything to say to the public, he does so directly by addressing the press, through an interview or a press statement. He also addresses the public through the Secretary General or the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere,” Ajayi said.
The statement added that the social media account was created by mischievous persons for nefarious objectives, as could be gleaned from one of the posts purporting to explain why Adebanjo is supporting Mr. Peter Obi in the forthcoming presidential election in 2023 instead of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a Yoruba man.
Ajayi quoted Adebanjo as saying that his support for Obi is “more fundamental and constitutional than the reason being purported in the spurious social media account” under reference.

“In view of the fact that Adebanjo usually speaks directly with the press, both print and electronic, any information purporting to have emanated from the said ‘social media account’ should be totally disregarded because he has no such account in any form or manner,” Ajayi said.
He added, “Since the elder statesman does not have any social media accounts, whatever is found in the Twitter account could not be said to have come from him. He has no such accounts as he speaks directly to the media or causes his views to be channelled to the public via the organisation’s Secretary General or the National Publicity Secretary.

“The media and members of the public are hereby enjoined to disregard any statement purported to have been sourced from Pa Adebanjo’s social media account because he has none.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all 13 chairmanship seats in the local government election conducted in Ebonyi state over the weekend.

Jossy Eze, chairman of the Ebonyi state Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), announced the election results in Abakaliki on Sunday.

According to Eze, APC also won all the 171 councillorship seats.

He commended the electorate for ensuring that the polls were free and peaceful.
He said: “By the power vested in me by the law, I hereby declare the results of the chairmanship of each of the 13 local governments as follows:

“One, Abakaliki Local Government, Mr Ebere Nwogba of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the majority of valid votes cast at the election, is hereby returned as duly elected.

“Other elected APC Chairmen included Chinedu Uburu, Ebonyi LGA; Chidiebere Uzor, Onicha LGA; Chinonso Ajah, Ohaozara LGA; Ibiam Nnajiofor, Afikpo North and Ekuma-Nkama Chima, Afikpo South.

“This commission has received, considered, validated and adopted the results of each of the 171 councillorship of the wards. That is to say that APC has won in all the wards.”

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and other political parties in the state reportedly boycotted the LG polls.

Chika Nwoba, publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi, described the elections as a “one-man-show”.

Dino Melaye, former senator representing Kogi west, says Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), was not known nationally until Atiku Abubakar, standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), “identified him”.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra state, was the running mate to the former vice-president in the 2019 general election.

He defected to LP shortly before the primary election of the PDP which Abubakar won ahead of 2023.

Speaking at an event in Abuja on Saturday night, Melaye described Abubakar as a “talent hunter”.
“I am happy that everybody here is singing one song and that is Atiku for president. Many are already voting on social media but INEC has no voting centre on social media,” the former lawmaker said.

“Atiku supporters are real, they are original. You can see them and they have PVCs. We have two very important people contesting this election. Atiku Abubakar, the Wazirin Adamawa and Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC.

“At 75, what is new that Atiku would be looking for other than to set the pedestal for the upcoming generation to have a life they can call their own? So this competent Nigerian that is highly mobile and administratively sagacious is coming to change the narrative.

Atiku should focus on calling on Tinubu to appear on national TV and take questions from the same people he's jostling to lead. That's not too much to ask.

A group, the Peter Obi Support Network, has asked supporters of former Vice President and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, to prevail on their principal to step down for the Labour Party candidate (Obi).

The spokesperson for the group, Mr Jones Onwuasoanya maintained that Obi was more competent, prepared and qualified for the position of the president.

He was responding to a statement by the Atiku Support Organisation, which had asked Obi to wait till after 2023 before deciding to contest the presidential elections.

ASO, as the Atiku’s support group is called, also noted that Obi’s political future was not with the LP, stating that he should come back to the PDP if he wanted to really contest the presidency.
The National Publicity Secretary of ASO, Dr Victor Moses, stated this in an interview with our correspondent on Thursday.

Moses, reiterating the stance of the presidential standard bearer, who was featured in an interview with Arise TV recently, said only a miracle would make Obi win the 2023 general polls.
“It would only take a miracle for the Labour Party to be able to do anything in the forthcoming elections. Don’t forget, elections are not won on social media. We have typical people who live in villages where the bulk of the votes come from and do not even have access to Twitter.

“How many Nigerians are on Twitter? That does not mean one can do without the new media in 21st century politics. As far as elections are concerned, grassroots politics is what matters. Do they have it?

“Do they have the structure? There is no House of Representatives member, House of Assembly or governor. Who will protect their votes at the polls? Who are the agents? They have no structure. Let us be sincere.

“The office of the President is not what you get up overnight and decide to become president and you start running on social media and think you are going to win? He has a future but certainly not now, not 2023.

“I will encourage him that if he must contest in 2023, he should return to the PDP because I do not see the Labour Party building a structure that will be formidable enough to contest for the office of the President,” he said.

Reacting to this, Onwuasoanya said Obi was more interested in the future of the country.

“There has to be a Nigeria first before we think of a political future. At this time, anybody who truly believes in Nigeria and knows what is going on in Nigeria will know that Nigeria is in trouble and on the verge of collapse.

“What we need now is someone who can revive Nigeria, not someone who will further worsen the situation. Anyone who truly loves Nigeria and understands the predicament Nigeria is will rather prefer a candidate who is more concerned about the problem.

“Nigerians want someone who is more concerned about solving issues, and that person is Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party. We should rather be asking that the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, owing to the fact that he has also conceded on many platforms that Obi is competent, to step down for Obi.

“Obi is more competent than Atiku, more qualified and more prepared than he (Atiku) is to make Nigeria better at this time. The onus is on him as a patriot that he is to step down and ask his supporters and associates to support Obi in the best interest of Nigeria,” he stated

The Coalition of 52 Northern Groups (CNG), on Friday, rejected the call by the United Nations (UN) for the unconditional release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

They also accused the UN of bias in its disposition towards certain regions of the country.
Briefing journalists in Abuja, CNG spokesman, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, urged the global organisation to immediately withdraw its demand for Kanu’s unconditional release from the lawful custody of the Nigerian authorities.

He also advised the Federal Government to rise to the occasion and defend the country’s by resisting and rejecting such the demand.

Suleiman argued that a destabilized Nigeria will certainly threaten the peace and security of the entire sub-Saharan Africa.

According to him, “It is unacceptable to Nigeria and Nigerians, and in particular to the North, that the United Nations will endorse the platform and space to be used by Kanu and IPOB in promoting anarchy and campaigning for genocide in Nigeria.

“We demand the United Nations to immediately withdraw the call for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu from the lawful custody of the Nigerian authorities.

“The CNG cautions the United Nations that their intervention, exclamations and actions should never be drawn to discountenance the effort of the Nigerian state to protect citizens from violence and to impose law and order.

“We, therefore, call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to maintain the sanctity, dignity and integrity of Nigeria and uphold and defend its sovereignty by resisting and rejecting such demands from any quarter.

“Lastly, it is important to caution the United Nations to weigh the impact and consequences of backing these perpetrators of indiscriminate violence, wanton destruction and collective mayhem, that fervently hope it will engulf the entire country and bring about another civil war and mass killings and suffering of innocent people.

“As the most populous country on the continent and one that continues to influence peace and stability across the sub-continent, any breakdown of law and order will only compound the security and humanitarian situations in the region.”
