Rolls-Royce Motor Cars sold a record-high number of its luxury vehicles last year, with purchases soaring worldwide, the German-owned company announced on Thursday.

Run by BMW since 1998, the prestigious brand whose models include the Ghost and Phantom, sold 4,107 cars across more than 50 countries in 2018, the highest annual figure in Rolls-Royce’s 115-year history.

Sales jumped more than 22 percent compared with 2017, when 3,362 Rolls-Royces were bought.

The UK-made vehicles were most popular in the Americas, Rolls said in a statement, adding that its workforce surpassed 2,000 for the first time.

“2018 was a most successful, record-breaking year for Rolls-Royce,” said its chief executive Torsten Muller-Otvos.

“We have seen growth in all our regions around the world (…) We set a formidable mark in 2018: I am confident it will prove the spur to even greater success in 2019.”

Sultan Muhammad V has stepped down as Malaysia’s king hot on the heels of his reported marriage to a Russian beauty queen.

The king’s future has been the source of rampant speculation since he took medical leave at the start of November last year. He was due to return to his duties earlier this week but instead issued a statement on Sunday announcing that he is abdicating the throne that he has held for only two years.


Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy with the unusual arrangement seeing the king selected from the royal rulers of the nine Malay states on a rotational basis, with each king’s term lasting five years. Muhammad V is the first monarch to abdicate the throne since the Muslim-majority country gained independence from Britain in 1957.



In his statement, the 49-year-old expressed his gratitude to the Malay Rulers, who elected him in 2016. He also paid tribute to Malaysia Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and the government for their cooperation in governing the country.

“During his tenure as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King), His Majesty worked to fulfill his responsibilities and the trust placed in him as the head of state, serving as the pillar of stability, the source of justice and as an umbrella of the solidarity and unity of the people,” the statement read, according to New Straits Times.

It added that the king is ready to resume working on the development of the state of Kelantan, where he is Sultan.

During his medical leave, Muhammad V reportedly married 25-year-old Russian beauty Oksana Voevodina, who won the Miss Moscow pageant in 2015.


The reports featured pictures of the November 22 wedding, showing the groom wearing traditional Malay garb while the bride wore a sparkling white wedding dress. The wedding is said to have taken place in a concert hall in the upscale Moscow suburb of Barvikha.

Despite the images, Prime Minister Mahathir said then that he did not have official confirmation on the wedding when questioned about it earlier this week.

Muhammad V was previously married to a member of another Malay royal family in 2004 but the couple divorced in 2008. When he ascended to the throne in 2016 he became the first king in Malaysian history to reign without a consort.

Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has raised the alarm that the state is under security siege.

The governor said this on Wednesday during a security meeting aimed at tackling the state’s security challenge and held at the government house in Katsina State.

The governor said kidnappings, armed robbery and banditry are now the order of the day in the state.

He added that daily security reports reaching him indicate that no day passes by without a reported case of kidnapping, armed robbery, cattle rustling and other heinous crimes.

According to him, government property was not even spared in the wave of criminal activities as some items were recently carted away very close to the Government House despite the presence of security operatives.

Governor Masari said the meeting was therefore called to find ways and means of curtailing criminal activities in the state.

The security meeting had participants from eight local governments areas of the state and neighbouring Zamfara State.

The meeting later went into a closed-door session.

The Senator representing the Kaduna Central District, Shehu Sani, has accused the Federal Government of exhibiting ‘sadistic tendencies’ towards the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.

Senator Sani disclosed this on Monday in a series of tweets.

He said, “In the cases of ASUU and the NLC, The Government has consistently demonstrated obduracy and sadistic tendencies.

“It’s important to understand the historical background of these trade unions; they are not politicians for summer, they are comrades always prepared for long winter”.

On the issue of power, the Senator called on the geopolitical zones who have been promised power in 2023 by political candidates to demand a written agreement from them.

He said the signing of the agreement should be witnessed by religious leaders or traditional rulers.

He expressed concern over certain promises that may be a mirage or hoax.

“If they promise your geopolitical zone political power in 2023, demand for a written irreversible & irrevocable agreement, signed by their presidential candidates & party chieftains & witnessed by respected traditional & religious leaders. Gentleman agreement is a hoax & a mirage.

“There are two kinds of people who support persecution; those who have never suffered from persecution and those who have forgotten the persecution they once suffered.

The culture of unaccountability on the part of elected persons, public servants and political appointees in the current Nigerian society is alarming and dangerously very high, which is a complete recipe for disaster and chaos if not checkmated. Various governments have encouraged and supported this unhealthy culture. Virtually all political institution in Nigeria today has been politicised and its neutral nature destroyed and stained for political gain. By now the country should have a new IG of police, who has shown himself to be clearly unfit for the job in all ramifications, from the SARS high handedness and rascality to laying siege at various state government house of assemblies to high profile suspect dying in the custody of the police, intimidation of citizens and other numerous misadventure and lawless activities carried out by the police, the Nigerian Police Force is in critical need of a new IG, as the current IG is a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

Under the ministry of health there has been a supremacy battle between the governing council of the NHIS and the executive secretary of the NHIS, the executive secretary of the NHIS Prof Usman Yusuf was suspended for engaging in corrupt practices but refused to vacate office hiding under the cover that only the president can suspend him and he got the support of the presidency. The chairman of the NHIS board Dr. Eyantu Ifienne, who expressed shock at his (Yusuf) action stated and I quote “let those who hide under the cover of the presidency to protect corruption know that Nigerians are watching. Whichever way it is, Nigeria is sitting on a keg of Gun powder. Until this government instills the culture of accountability among its employees boko haram would continue to have a field day, SARS would continue to carry out extra judicial killings and illegal raids, corruption would continue to increase, public institutions would completely be mismanaged and so on.

From the current happenings in the country, it is obvious the president only knows what his aides want him to know. There is a doubt if the president has a firsthand knowledge of the current happening in the country. At this stage, Nigeria does not need a president who waits for information from aids before he knows what is happening around him, Nigeria needs a president who can make use of the social media, read, watch and rationally analyse the news, understand when he is being lied to or being deceived. Nigerians should know that the quest for good governance, accountability and better and prosperous life is in their hands.

Due to the widespread fears that the 2019 election, would be a violent one, based on the determination of the opposition to acquire power at all cost and the resolutness of the ruling party to consolidate its hold on power. President Muhammadu Buhari has told Nigerians that the 2019 election is not a do or die affair, hence they must not approach the polls with fear.

The President made the call in a New Year Message sent out on Monday, December 31.

According to the President, 2019 is a very significant year in the nation’s history and as such Nigerians must brace up for the new moral grounds to be broken.

Below is the full mesage by President Muhammdau Buhari.

“Dear compatriots,

It is my utmost pleasure to rejoice with all Nigerians as we enter the year 2019, which will be a very significant one for our country.

At the turn of every year, we often use the opportunity to look back at the past and forward to the future. To review the outgoing year, its high and low points, successes and failures, and be fully thankful to God.

We Nigerians are a religious people, and we believe that God reigns and rules in the affairs of men. A time like this offers precious opportunity for thanksgiving, stock taking and reflection on goals and targets set for the receding year, and how much was accomplished. The ones not done can then be rolled over into a new year.

The dawn of a New Year is also a time to look forward. To consider new prospects, unfold our plans, and prepare for landmark dates and events.

2019 will be an election year for us. In about two months, the polls are due, and we will elect leaders into various offices, at national and state levels.

As I welcome you into 2019, I also reiterate my many promises and declarations that the general elections will be free, fair and credible.

Elections need not be do or die affair, and we should not approach that eventuality in a democracy with trepidation and mortal fear. Happily, a large number of presidential candidates have committed to peace, and peace we shall have.

Those who continue to trumpet falsehood and negativity are on their own, fighting a losing battle. The greater number of Nigerians are trusting and believing that we shall deliver on our promises for a level playing field at the polls, and that is what we shall do.

We have had our challenges: security, economic, political, social. But we are resolved to combat and overcome them all.

The Philippines’ eccentric leader has shared his views on the cornerstone tenets of the Christian faith, calling the Holy Trinity doctrine “silly” and claiming that it was “unimpressive” for a true god to get himself crucified.

In his latest tirade against the Catholic Church, Duterte started off by mocking the Holy Trinity, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, or three expressions of one divine essence.

"There’s only one God, period. You cannot divide God into three, that’s silly."

“You’re already praying at one God, then you’re going to pray at these cursed saints. There’s only one God,” the Philippines’ president said Saturday in Kidapawan City.

The 73-year-old leader cranked up his rhetoric when it came to Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, using extremely vulgar language to attack what billions around the world consider to be God’s divine plan of salvation of humankind through the sacrifice of his Son.

“Your God was nailed on the cross. F**k! How unimpressive,” Duterte said, speaking in Tagalog.

“I’m God and you will crucify me?! Motherf**ker. I’d tell them: ‘Lightning, finish all of them. Burn all the non-believers’.

Duterte did not stop there, continuing his speech with an attack against veneration of the saints and the belief in their divine intervention. “Saint Catalina, Saint Anne, Saint Thomas, Saint Sebastian, Saint Rodrigo, they’re nothing… I don’t know them. Look, those documents were written –if at all– 3,000 years ago. Why would they care about our lives now.”

Paul Pogba scored twice for the second time in five days as Manchester United’s revival since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced the sacked Jose Mourinho continued unabated with a 4-1 thrashing of Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

A third consecutive victory for Solskjaer as caretaker until the end of the season keeps United eight points adrift of Chelsea in the fight for a top-four finish.

Marcus Rashford also shone as the England international’s stunning run and cross teed up Pogba’s opener before he scored United’s third.
