Politics / The Synthetic Leaders by Pedagogueeye: 9:55am On Mar 28, 2019
The first republic in Nigeria could be said to be the last time the country had populist leaders, individuals whose leadership prowess came from the people, Leaders who were respected and adored, men who were ready to improve themselves and their leadership style even at their own detriment, men who respected the wishes of their people, men who engaged in populist policies that would benefit the people.

Currently the Nigerian political field is dominated by players with zero integrity, myopic players, corrupt, wicked, inhuman, anti democratic, irrational, egoistic and evil players. These men, who have turned themselves into demi-gods, are capitalising on the weakness, docility and sharp division among the Nigerian people and also the ineffectiveness and inefficiency of the Nigerian constitution and various institutions to cause chaos, impose themselves on the people and make the country look like the state of nature.

The 2019 Election, one of the worst in the history of elections in Nigeria has deposed a lot of Synthetic leaders and created new ones. Who are Synthetic leaders? These are leaders who are unreal, who use all manner of deception, and fraudulent means to fix themselves in position of leadership. These set of people are entirely in leadership for their selfish, parochial and primitive interest.

Nigeria since the end of the first republic has been led by synthetic leaders, which explains why the country has remained the way it is without much development since its existence. The return to democracy in 1999 brought a ray of hope and belief that the country for the first time in many years would have populist leaders, but the opposite has been the case.

The country has been moving from one fraudulent election to another, Election is seen as a zero sum game, where winner takes it all and the looser is vanquished. While the electoral body try its best to ensure a credible election process the political class and elite are also scheming to ensure that elections are heavily manipulated to their own favour and at the detriment of the electorate.

This situation has led to the underdevelopment and destruction of the country with its corresponding institutions and depicting the country like the Italian society in the 14th century as described by Niccolo Machiavelli where he stated that

“The jealousies among the states were so severe that none wanted to cooperate with each other. He (Mach) saw that in the entire Italy there was no single powerful prince who could go ahead. There were corruption, moral degradation and infidelity in every sphere of the society, Italy was the characteristic example of a constitutional decay. Cruelty and murder became the day to day affair. Values and principles were banished from the society. Christian honesty and ethics were the values of the past. Profligacy and debauchery were frequent. Struggle for power was very common. Naked selfishness reigned everywhere. It was an age of bastards and adventurers”.

This picture of the Italian society depicted by Machiavelli as far back as the 14th century is exactly the same picture of Nigeria today in the 21st century.

There seems to be no end to this anomaly as we are stuck in a tunnel whose end we can’t see as these Synthetic leaders have ensured that we remain in this dark tunnel while they continue with their deception of ensuring we see the light at the end, it is almost a hopeless situation.

A free and fair election would end the emergence of synthetic leadership, but the ruling political class has ensured that such would never happen, therefore it is up to the people to come together engage in civil disobedience, demonstrations, launching agitations and embark on revolution to drive away these few monsters who have imposed themselves on the people and have blighted their future.

The 2019 elections has shown that Nigerians would for another four years experience synthetic leadership, some areas might be lucky as they got their choice of leaders even in the face of tyranny, oppression, intimidation, harassment, and attempts to manipulate election result. But the same can’t be same for some.

In as much as I try to avoid the mentioning of names in this write-up, I almost can’t resist the temptation to mention the name of the Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara.

Hon Yakubu Dogara who despite being in the opposition has been able to surmount all political obstacles and attacks to hold firmly to his area of influence and provide quality leadership to his people and the Nation. Having been in the Green Chamber since 2007, he has endeared himself to his people so much that in a very religious conscious North east, his religion or political affiliation isn’t considered when assessing him.

No nation moves forward with bad, evil and egoistic men who fraudulently manipulated their way to power and leadership positions.

For the country to move forward, Nigerians must be prepared to do away with Synthetic leaders through elections, civil disobedience and revolution, improve their level of consciousness and continue to engage in self-examination.

Health / World’s 1st Remote Brain Surgery Via 5G Network Performed In China by Pedagogueeye: 12:45am On Mar 18, 2019
A Chinese surgeon has performed the world’s first remote brain surgery using 5G technology, with the patient 3,000km away from the operating doctor.

Dr. Ling Zhipei remotely implanted a neurostimulator into his patient’s brain on Saturday, Chinese state-run media reports. The surgeon manipulated the instruments in the Beijing-based PLAGH hospital from a clinic subsidiary on the southern Hainan island, located 3,000km away. The surgery is said to have lasted three hours and ended successfully. The patient, suffering from Parkinson’s disease, is said to be feeling well after the pioneering operation.

The doctor used a computer connected to the next-generation 5G network developed by Chinese tech giant Huawei. The new device enabled a near real-time connection, according to Dr. Ling. “You barely feel that the patient is 3,000 kilometers away,” he said.

Conventional 4G networks do not allow surgical operations to be performed due to video lag and remote control delays. The new technology seems to have resolved these issues, the surgeon says.

Medical institutions worldwide have made an array of experiments with robotic “telesurgery,” the most striking example being American da Vinci Surgical System. But the technology has yet to make a significant commercial impact, as existing gadgets are criticized for having a number of performance issues.

Remote surgery could allow people from far-away or poor regions, as well as war zones, to receive immediate help from top doctors around the globe. Due to its large bandwidth and low latency, 5G enables “extremely low operational delay” during surgery, the manufacturer says.

5G made its debut in remote surgery in January when a Chinese doctor successfully performed an operation on an animal’s liver at Fujian Medical University on the southeastern coast of China. In mid-March, Huawei’s solutions were used in the first-ever human 5G remote surgery – also on a liver – in a hospital in Shenzhen 2,000 km away from the doctor’s workplace in Beijing.

Huawei’s efforts in 5G have become an eyesore for Washington after the US-China trade war unfolded last year. The Trump administration has been particularly persistent in trying to blacklist Huawei worldwide over spying allegations. Tensions escalated even further as the company’s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, was detained in Canada on a US warrant in December 2018.

Along with Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK, Washington has barred Huawei from helping to build 5G networks. It also prohibited US government agencies from using Huawei products for “security reasons.” Huawei filed a lawsuit challenging the decision.

Politics / How Police Allegedly Killed Micheal Adikwu – Offa Robbery Suspect by Pedagogueeye: 1:16pm On Mar 16, 2019
The trial within trial of the five suspects involved in the Offa bank robbery in April 2018 continued on Friday at the State High Court sitting in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

During their arraignment before Justice Halimah Salman, the suspects told the court how their confessional statements were obtained by the police.

The first suspect, Ayoade Akinnibosun, in his testimony, told the trial judge that he gave his statement under duress and not voluntarily.

He explained that he was tortured and shot in two legs, alleging that the police asked him to implicate the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, but he refused.

Akinnibosun claimed that five men were shot dead in his presence and that of other suspects, in order to force them to do the bidding of the police.

He alleged that he was forced to sleep on the spot where the men were killed, adding that his hands and legs were tied for days.

The suspect also told the trial judge that six hefty stones were placed on his back and denied food for nearly one week while he was being tortured.

He said they were kept inside the generator room at Police Headquarters Abuja while a dismissed police officer, identified as Michael Adiukwu, was brought to identify them if they were part of the robbery gang.

According to Akinnibosun, the man denied knowing them and was shot dead on the spot.

Afterwards, he said he was shown an already written statement which he was asked to sign and agreed to do so for fear of being killed.

The suspect insisted that whatever he said during the parade of the press conference was written for him to memorise and confess to the public.

He claimed that the police warned him not to implicate them that the statement was made under duress.

Akinnibosun told the trial judge that he was given a four-page statement to sign but he could not because his fingers were not functioning due to torture.

He said one of his fingers was placed on the documents for thumb printing and his request to read and go through the statement was turned down.

After giving his testimony, the suspect was cross-examined by the prosecution counsel.

It would be recalled that there was an out-roar by the public when the Force Public Relation Officer Jimoh Moshood confirmed that the Lead suspect in the Offa robbery Micheal Adikwu was dead. Nigerians were shocked that such a high profile suspect could die in police custody, which led some to believe he was extra-judiciously killed. The police spokesman stated, “Michael Adikwu ‘M’ 30Yrs was not murdered but slumped and died in detention while an investigation into the Offa Bank Robbery was ongoing.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki had asked the Presidency to institute a judicial inquiry into the ‘how and when’ the suspect died.

The Nigerian police have been involved in so many extra judicial killings which has led to condemnation from civil societies and human right bodies.
A human rights group, the Office of the Citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, accused the police of being involved in the extra-judicial killing of over 40 Nigerians in 2016.

Sports / I’m The Only One Who Won In Turin For The Whole Season – Mourinho by Pedagogueeye: 7:18pm On Mar 14, 2019
Jose Mourinho has given his take on another week of incredible UEFA Champions League drama, including Juventus’ thrilling comeback win in Turin – where Mourinho reminded fans he had won with Manchester United earlier this season.

A Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick helped Juve to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit against Atletico Madrid and book their spot in the quarterfinals.

Speaking in the second episode of his RT show, ‘On the Touchline with Jose Mourinho’, the former Manchester United boss gave viewers a cheeky reminder that earlier this season he had succeeded in Turin, where Diego Simeone and Atletico had now failed.

Mourinho and United’s win came during the Champions League group stage in November, when they recovered from a Ronaldo goal at Juventus Stadium to win 2-1 thanks to a late strike from Juan Mata and an own goal by Leonardo Bonucci.

The game was also memorable for Mourinho – who previously managed Inter Milan in Italy – cupping his hand to his ear in celebration after the game, in response to goading from Juve fans.

“Let me tell you that I’m not unhappy at all, because in the end, I’m the only one who won in Turin for the whole season,” Mourinho said with a smile on RT, when discussing Tuesday’s Juve-Atletico result.

Sports / MMA Fighter Conor Mcgregor Arrested & Charged With Robbery by Pedagogueeye: 1:25am On Mar 12, 2019
MMA fighter Conor McGregor was arrested and charged with ‘strong-armed robbery’ in Miami Beach, Florida, after police said he slapped a cell phone out of a fan’s hand, stomped on it and walked off with it.

The fighter was leaving the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel after 5 a.m. on Monday when someone tried to take a photo of him with a cell phone, according to the police. McGregor reacted by destroying the phone, then picking it up and walking away with it.

The 30-year-old MMA fighter was arrested Monday evening after a day-long investigation by Miami Beach police, which said the incident was captured on the resort’s surveillance cameras. McGregor was booked into a Miami-Dade county jail.

The Irish fighter was reportedly vacationing in South Florida and preparing to return to the UFC circuit after his six-month suspension over a brawl that followed his UFC 229 bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov in Las Vegas.

Last week, McGregor posted photos from the Versace Mansion on South Beach, where he celebrated his mother’s 60th birthday.

The arrest comes almost a year after McGregor was arrested in New York, for attacking a bus carrying several UFC fighters – apparently targeting Nurmagomedov. He pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge and was sentenced to three days of anger management courses – which apparently didn‘t work – and five days of community service.

Foreign Affairs / It Pays To Read : Teacher Wins $10K For Reading Contract To The End by Pedagogueeye: 9:05am On Mar 08, 2019
A Georgia teacher is $10,000 richer after winning a contest buried in the fine print of an insurance policy contract. There’s a lesson in here somewhere, if you read between the lines (ouch!).

Donelan Andrews came out of her travel insurance contract $10,000 wealthier after spotting a line in the text of her insurance contract informing her she was one of the “very few” customers to actually read to the end – and would be rewarded for her perseverance.

The high school teacher contacted Florida-based insurer Squaremouth less than 24 hours after its “Pays to Read” contest launched – the first of the 73 customers who’d bought a policy to actually read through it.

“Many travelers buy travel insurance and just assume they’re covered if anything goes wrong, without actually reading the details of their policy,” a Squaremouth spokesperson explained, adding that this failure to read was the number one reason travel insurance claims are denied. Pays to Read is an effort to reward such responsibility.

In addition to Andrews’ $10,000, the company donated another $5,000 to the schools where she teaches and an additional $10,000 to literacy charity Reading is Fundamental.

Foreign Affairs / Full Obedience Or Tougher Sanctions: US Warns North Korea by Pedagogueeye: 8:51am On Mar 08, 2019
Says N. Korea’s ‘step-by-step’ denuclearization unacceptable.
The US administration will not accept any gradual denuclearization of North Korea, a senior State Department official said, just as John Bolton threatened Pyongyang with tougher sanctions, following the unproductive Hanoi summit.

After threatening to ramp up “crushing economic sanctions,” National Security Advisor John Bolton urged Kim Jong-un to ditch any idea of a step-by-step denuclearization of his country.

“The North Koreans, obviously, would like to give up as little of their nuclear, biological and chemical weapons and ballistic missile programs as they could, in exchange for a very broad sanctions relief,” Bolton told Fox News on Thursday, stressing that Donald Trump “wasn’t buying” such an approach during the negotiations at the Hanoi summit last week.

The United States still hopes that Pyongyang will be completely denuclearized before the end of Donald Trump’s term in 2021, a State Department official told reporters, insisting that the incremental approach has been rejected by the administration.

“Where we really need to see progress, and we need to see it soon, is meaningful and verifiable steps on denuclearization as quickly as we can,” the official said. “We are mindful that every day the challenge is greater, the threat posed… is not going away.”

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un each left the Hanoi summit last week empty-handed, after the North Korean leader failed to persuade Trump to fulfil his part of the deal and remove at least some of the sanctions. A few days later satellite imagery surfaced conveniently, showing unspecified ‘activity’ at Sohae satellite launching site, which North Korea began to dismantle last year. Furthermore, Yonhap news agency ran a report claiming the North is operating uranium enrichment facilities at its Yongbyon site.

While US officials admitted they had no clue what was happening and were seeking to ‘clarify’ the situation, with even Bolton stressing it was too soon to make any judgement, Trump has already expressed his ‘disappointment’ with Pyongyang’s actions.

Foreign Affairs / North Korea Becomes Largest Debtor To Sweden, Owing $300+ Million by Pedagogueeye: 1:19am On Mar 06, 2019
Pyongyang has a weird and now record debt to the Scandinavian nation, which has hit 2.8 billion Swedish kronas ($302 million), according to local media citing government agency insuring export deals.

The unpaid bill includes a thousand model 144 Volvos and mining equipment supplied by Atlas Copco industrial company as well as other Swedish producers. The items were shipped to North Korea back in the 1970s, but the country has not still honored the debts.

After around 45 years of missing the deadline, the North’s initial debt rose from 600 million kronas ($65 million at the current rate) to record 2.8 billion ($302 million), the chief analyst of the Swedish Export Credit Agency (EKN), which serves as credit insurer for companies’ trade deals, told Sveriges Radio. Stefan Karlsson explained that the sum has been surging due to added interest, and rose by 100 million kronas ($15 million) in one year, thus making North Korea Sweden’s major debtor. Previously, Cuba held the position.

Sweden received the last payment from the North in the late 1980s, and Karlsson says that the chance that it will get the money back is pretty small given North Korea ‘s current economic situation.

Some of the exported Volvos were previously spotted in North Korea. Back in 2016, the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang posted a photo showing one of the “still unpaid” cars, saying it is used as a taxi in the northeastern city of Chongjin.

EKN reportedly reminds North Korea to pay off the debts twice a year, however, the requests are usually met with silence.

Politics / The Time To Vote Is Now Or Never by Pedagogueeye: 11:45am On Feb 22, 2019
With few days to the Nigerian 2019 federal elections, it is pertinent to note that your future and future of the unborn lies entirely with whatever decisions you make before or during the election. This is an opportunity to do away with irrationality, corruption, lawlessness, religious fanaticism, ethnic chauvinism, nepotism, senseless bloodletting, poverty, misery, hopelessness and other vice.

The time for action is now, those who would stay at home firing all manner of prayers, should know that prayer without action is self deceit. No nation in the world was transformed through prayers only but through conscious actions, pragmatic and rational decision backed by prayers.

Those who feel reluctant to participate in this form of political struggle or election for irrational reasons, or having a defeatist mentality, you are endangering the future of your generation by unconsciously aiding dangerous Pharisees, displaying Babylonian love, drenched in self righteousness but with a heart as dark as hell. Do not be the political illiterate as described by Bertolt Brecht and I quote

“The worst illiterate is the political illiterate, he doesn’t hear, doesn’t speak, nor participates in the political events. He doesn’t know the cost of life, the price of the bean, of the fish, of the flour, of the rent, of the shoes and of the medicine, all depends on political decisions. The political illiterate is so stupid that he is proud and swells his chest saying that he hates politics. The slowpoke doesn’t know that, from his political ignorance is born the prostitute, the abandoned child, and the worst thieves of all, the corrupt politician, the lackeys of the exploitative national and multinational companies”.

Why accepting defeat when the battle is yet to begin. Remember it is better to die standing than to live kneeling.

To those who have tried their best to participate but cant, you can join in this battle against the forces of darkness and retrogression by ensuring your voices are as loud as the trumpet that destroyed the walls of Jericho in echoing the superiority of life and light over death and darkness.

Go out and vote, watch and pray.

Foreign Affairs / The ICC Consists Of “idiots”, I Don’t Recognize Its Authority – Duterte by Pedagogueeye: 2:11am On Jan 31, 2019
The International Criminal Court (ICC) consists of idiots, tough-talking Philippines leader Rodrigo Duterte said, launching another attack on the body, which is targeting his “war on drugs.”

Speaking in Papua New Guinea on Friday, the Philippines president refused to recognize the authority of the ICC, adding it is a mere “creation” of the European Union, hungry to spread its “international governance.”

“So why would I allow myself to be tried by a few idiot human beings in this world”?

Duterte has been long on the radar of human rights groups and the ICC for his controversial anti-drug operation in which 4,000 alleged drug dealers have been killed.

However, a report submitted to the ICC said the death toll was more than 8,000, triggering a preliminary probe against the president and high-profile officials for “crimes against humanity.”

As usual, Duterte did not mince words.

“[They say Duterte] ‘is a monster.’ So I’m not included in human rights. Find a court for monsters,” he told a Filipino audience, referring to the rights group’s allegations against him.

The president has repeatedly used strong language in speaking about the ICC probe and the judges. In October, he said there was no way he would bow down to it, and threatened to “slap all of you judges.”

In another warning to his foreign critics, the Philippines strongman said they can end up being “live human targets” if they dare to come to his country and bring their accusations.

In March, Manila announced its withdrawal from the Rome Statute, the ICC founding treaty. Duterte even threatened to arrest ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, stressing that the body has no authority over Philippines since the country is no longer its member.

Politics / Third Force And The Politics Of Self Deceit by Pedagogueeye: 9:39am On Jan 25, 2019
THIRD FORCE AND THE POLITICS OF SELF DECEIT
By lainonline / January 25, 2019

The growing discontentment among Nigerians towards the two major political parties, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), led to the clamor for a powerful force to seize power from the two dominant parties. This led to the idea of a third force, which at the initial stage looked like the bulldozer that would rid Nigeria of the maladministration of the APC and PDP.

But like it is said the “the basic nature of man is selfishness”, everything about the third force seem to be fleeting, due to several personal interest and selfishness.

The four major contenders outside the third force are Kingsley Moghalu of YPP, Gbenga Hashim of ANN, Oby Ezekwesili of ACPN, (who recently stepped down) and Omoyele Sowore of AAC, imagine this four aligning, presenting one person as a presidential candidate, they would make a very big difference but still won’t get close to the two major parties the PDP and APC.

Politics in Nigeria has never been based on credentials, achievements, qualification etc, but all manner of sentiments and absurdities. This is due to the fact that there is a high and almost total absence of consciousness on the part of the hoi polloi about their pitiable and plightful condition caused by bad leaders who have ensured that they (hoi polloi) have no access to even the smallest quality of Education and this evil is mostly prevalent in the Northern region

.The Northern elite due to primitive parochial selfish interest has ensured that its citizens continue to wallow in ignorance and illiteracy to ensure total and unalloyed domination over them, as education leads to the gradual growth of consciousness, which in turn would lead to mental emancipation a reality the elites fight against.

When you realise that those without access to education and information, those who are the target audience of ruthless and vampire propaganda those who have been brutalised using the weapons of poverty are the highest voters in the whole country, you can imagine the dilemma the country has found itself. A large population of voters ready to vote whoever they are asked to vote, voters who almost can’t make rational decisions, and are totally unconscious of their condition.

It is therefore self deceit to think that there would be any third force that would stage an upset and dispose the two dominant parties, who have capitalised on the above sentiments and hoodwinked the people.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo succinctly put it in his interview with BBC Pidgin where he stated and I quote “the choice that we have for the immediate in Nigerian situation today and the immediate is 2019 is between the candidate of party APC and PDP, the other minor parties will line behind or not sufficiently relevant”. The third force is supposed to be the difference that would appeal to people’s conscience, reason and intellectualism, but unfortunately Nigerian politics relies on sentiments and propaganda.

The intellectuals and the conscious populace who believes in the capacity of a third force in changing the fortunes of the populace would cast their vote for the third force. But the salient question is what is their voting strength compared to the high number of unconscious, hungry and sentimental voters.

The reality facing Nigeria is to choose the best evil among the two dominant parties, until the country gets someone who is ready to provide quality education and emancipate the people from illiteracy, irrationality and poverty. Revolution could have been a second option, but only people who are conscious of their position would embark on a revolution.

The third force should prepare themselves to embark on a nationwide campaign immediately after the 2019 elections to inform the populace of their pitiable situation, arouse the spirit of consciousness in them, let them know that supporting a candidate because of religion, ethnicity, cash disbursement and tribal inclination would never improve their condition, instead further impoverish them.

These are the messages the third force should spread around every nook and cranny of the country in preparation for the 2023 election, as there can be no third force without the people, the Nigeria people are the third force and the Nigerian people aren’t prepared for the emergence of a third force in 2019.

As for the 2019 election there are only Two Parties, the PDP and APC. Voting outside these two parties is self deceit.

Foreign Affairs / German MP Returns To Parliament As A Transgender Woman by Pedagogueeye: 4:48pm On Jan 21, 2019
German MP Markus Ganserer was re-elected to the Bavarian state parliament in October, but he won’t be taking his seat in the chamber. Instead, Tessa Ganserer, Germany’s first transgender lawmaker, will sit where Markus once did.

Representing the Green Party, Tessa Ganserer is Germany’s first openly transgender politician. Ganserer represented Nuremberg North as Markus since 2013, and won reelection in October.

In a press conference last week, Markus announced that he had been transgender for a decade, and was finally coming out as Tessa. The Bavarian MP said he was binning his suits and ties and will serve the public as a woman.

“I am a woman with every fiber of my body and now Madam regional MP as well,” Tessa Ganserer posted on Facebook earlier this month. At a press conference in Munich last week, Ganserer told reporters “I am not doing this for fun. I didn’t choose to be a woman.”

Ganserer, who is married and has two sons, said that she “discovered” her true identity ten years ago when she would wear dresses at home.

Although Ganserer will appear in parliament in a blond wig and makeup, she will still be referred to as ‘Markus,’ due to a German law that requires two medical opinions, as well as a waiting period of one year, before a person’s name and gender can be changed on official records.

Ganserer’s fellow politicians will nevertheless treat her as a female in the Parliament. Her identity “should not be a problem in this house,” said Ilse Aigner, President of the Bavarian Parliament. “A person’s personality is always more important than their gender.” Aigner, a member of the conservative Christian Social Union party, said she would instruct parliamentarians to “treat Mrs. Ganserer as a woman…regardless of the legal situation.”

As Markus, Ganserer sat on civil service and transport and technology committees. Now, Tessa has publicly campaigned for LGBT rights and will press for Germany to overhaul the 1980 Transsexual Act, which mandates the medical opinions and waiting period for a person wishing to change their gender.

Some politicians have criticized Ganserer’s focus on LGBT issues. “Markus Gaserer is now called Tessa and wants to reform the Transsexual Law,” Wolfgang Wiehle of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) tweeted. “Luckily, there are no more important issues to worry about in our country!”

Generally a liberal society, Germany’s federal parliament legislated last month to include a third gender option – “various” – on birth certificates, following a decision by the country’s Constitutional Court. Same-sex marriage became legal in the country in 2017 after a parliamentary vote. 225 members of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU and CSU parties voted against the bill.

Politics / Southern Kaduna Christians Would Never Vote Me No Matter Who I Chose - EL Rufai by Pedagogueeye: 5:52pm On Jan 17, 2019
Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has stated that regardless of who he chooses, the Southern Kaduna christians would never vote him in as Governor in the coming Gubernatorial poll.

El-Rufai stated this on Channel’s Television’s Sunrise Daily while reacting to questions about his choice of a Muslim as his running mate for the next gubernatorial election in Kaduna.

The governor said, “What if I tell you that no matter who I choose as my running mate, even if I choose the Pope, 67 per cent of the Christians in Southern Kaduna have made up their minds that they will never vote for me”.

According to El-Rufai, his choice of Hadiza Balarabe as a running mate is politically motivated.

He said, “I am a politician, so everything I do is politically motivated”.

El-Rufai said he has not chosen anyone based on ethnic or religious bias, urging Nigerians to go beyond these prejudices in the best interest of the nation.

The governor went on to say that for him, the issue is that Kaduna state is divided and needs to be united and the only way to this is to take “religion and ethnicity off the table”.

Foreign Affairs / You Are Running A Zombie Government by Pedagogueeye: 5:14pm On Jan 16, 2019
Opening a debate on a no-confidence motion due to be held in the British parliament on Wednesday, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Prime Minister Theresa is running a “zombie government.”

Corbyn tabled the no-confidence motion on Tuesday evening following a massive defeat for May after her Brexit deal, painstakingly negotiated with Brussels, was voted down in the House of Commons by a huge margin of more than 200 votes.

The Labour leader said May had wasted two years with her “doomed strategy” and that any prime minister who loses such an important vote should step down.

Corbyn said that May’s Conservative Party was “fundamentally split” on Brexit meaning it was unable to govern the country at a time of crisis. He said the blame for the mess lies with May and confirmed that she had not invited him to cross-party Brexit talks.

May’s decision to exclude Corbyn from cross-party talks after the Tuesday vote was widely condemned by MPs and political commentators on social media.

Asked by Liberal Democrat Alistair Carmichael if he would support a “people’s vote” on the Brexit deal currently on offer, Corbyn said that “all options” would be on the table, but rejected the possibility of a no-deal Brexit.

During the debate, Corbyn said there is “no majority for this government’s Brexit deal and there is no majority either for a no-deal scenario,” which he said would be a “catastrophe.“

Instead, the Labour leader said the “best outcome” would be to hold a general election. An election, he said, would give “new impetus” to Brexit negotiations and bring “fresh ideas” to the issues faced by the British people.

Responding to Corbyn, May said that a general election is the “worst thing” that could happen and would create “division when we need unity” and “chaos when we need certainty.”

May said a second referendum on Brexit was not an option and that there was “no indication” that a new vote would solve the crisis faced by the country. May suggested that regardless of how good any Brexit deal was, Corbyn would still vote against it.

She said that all Labour and Corbyn had offered on Brexit are “vague aspirations” rather than specific suggestions. May also accused Corbyn of tolerating anti-semitism in the Labour Party.

Corbyn has previously adamantly denied accusations that he holds anti-semitic views, saying he has spent his “whole life” fighting discrimination and racism.

Politics / Onnoghen Trial Adjourned Till Next Week by Pedagogueeye: 12:33pm On Jan 14, 2019
The Code of Conduct Tribunal has adjourned proceedings involving the charges of non-declaration of assets preferred against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

The proceedings were adjourned till January 22.

The tribunal adjourned the case after the lead prosecuting counsel, Aliyu Umar (SAN), conceded that Onnoghen was not properly served with the charges and the summons.

Umar agreed that the CJN was not personally served with the charges and the court’s summons, as required by the law. He, therefore, requested the tribunal to direct a fresh service on the CJN.

Olanipekun had earlier told the tribunal that he and other defence lawyers only appeared in court in protest against the jurisdiction of the tribunal.

He also said that, from the account given by the court official earlier in the proceedings, the CJN was not served with the charges and summons personally, but through his aide.

He then insisted that the law requires that the defendant be served personally.

Sports / This Is The Real Man United - De Gea by Pedagogueeye: 9:44pm On Jan 13, 2019
David de Gea has said “this is the real Manchester United” after his inspired performance helped them to win a sixth consecutive Premier League game.

The goalkeeper made 11 stunning saves to keep Tottenham from scoring as United claimed another victory under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, winning 1-0 at Wembley.

Marcus Rashford gave United the lead from a long pass played by Paul Pogba at the 44th minute, but the performance of the goalkeeper would forever be in the minds of United faithfuls for years.

United look to be back to their best in recent weeks and De Gea agrees, saying the club is getting back to their real selves.

“We won the game against a top team like Tottenham, we controlled the first half but in the second half they put on a lot of pressure and had chances. I was feeling very well with the first two saves, it was a great game,” he said.

“I don’t even remember some of the saves so I can’t pick a best. The manager brought some happiness, the players are playing well and the team is very strong now.

“We know how to control the games, how to keep the ball, how to create chances, which is very good for us. This is the real Manchester United.”

Politics / Trial Of CJN Unjustifiable - Afe Babalola by Pedagogueeye: 9:25pm On Jan 13, 2019
An eminent legal practitioner and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Afe Babalola, has criticised the Federal Government for the planned arraignment of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

In a statement personally signed by him on Sunday, the senior lawyer said the government has no justification for its decision to arraign the CJN before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

He stated that the Constitution clearly provided for the procedure with which the Chief Justice of Nigeria can be removed from office.

Unlike other judicial officers, Mr Babalola stressed that the CJN can only be removed by the President, upon receipt of an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate.

He also condemned the application seeking an order directing Justice Onnoghen to recuse himself from office pending the conclusion of the trial.

The prominent lawyer described the proposed arraignment of the CJN as one that unfairly degrades not only the judiciary but also the Constitution of the land.

Read the full statement below;

I have just received news of the proposed arraignment of the Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen, Chief Justice of Nigeria before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on allegations of failure to fully declare his assets.

Without mincing words, I am as taken aback at this development in the same way as I was when not too long ago, the D.S.S invaded the homes of some Judicial officers, including Justices of the Supreme Court in the middle of the night on allegations of corruption.

However, despite the similarity between the two events, two things place this latest development above the previous one in terms of ignominy namely; the status of the Chief Justice of Nigeria as the head of the Judicial arm of government and the fact that since the invasion and the rash of prosecutions that were instituted against some Judges, the Court, via the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Nganjiwa v Federal Republic of Nigeria (2017) LPELR-43391(CA) has since stated firmly, the procedure permitted by law when allegations of misconduct are made against Judicial Officers

Disregard For Constitutional Provisions

In my reaction to the previous invasion of the homes of Judges, I referred to an article entitled ‘Guarding the Guardians: Judicial Council and Judicial independence’ published by the Law School of the University of Chicago which reads as follows:

Judicial councils are bodies that are designed to insulate the functions of appointment, promotion, and discipline of judges from the partisan political process while ensuring some level of accountability. Judicial councils lie somewhere in between the polar extremes of letting judges manage their own affairs and the alternative of complete political control of appointments, promotion, and discipline…The motivating concern for adoption of councils…was ensuring independence of the judiciary after periods of undemocratic rule. To entrench judicial independence, most…countries enshrined the judicial council in their constitution.

I also stated that:

It is for this reason that the 1999 Constitution in section 153 provides for the establishment of the National Judicial Council and in paragraphs 21(b) & (d) of the Third Schedule grants to the Council the power to exercise disciplinary control over judicial officers. As the allegations made against the judges are said to arise from or pertain to their office as Judges, I am of the view that the Constitution requires that any infraction by the said Judges be firstly investigated and resolved by the National Judicial Council (NJC) to the exclusion of any other body or authority.

Happily, the views expressed by me were eventually upheld by the Court of Appeal in Nganjiwa v Federal Republic of Nigeria (2017) LPELR-43391(CA). That decision still subsists and has not been set aside. I, therefore, see no justification for the decision to arraign the CJN before the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Again, the point must be made clear that the Constitution clearly provides for the procedure with which the Chief Justice of Nigeria can be removed from office. Section 292(1)(a)(i) and 292(1)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as Amended) provides as follows:

292. (1) A Judicial Officer shall not be removed from his office or appointment before his age of retirement except in the following circumstances – (a) in the case of – (i) Chief Justice of Nigeria, President of the Court of Appeal, Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Grand Kadi of the Sharia Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and President, Customary Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, by the President acting on an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate.

(b) In any case, other than those to which paragraph (a) of this subsection applies, by the President or, as the case may be, the Governor acting on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council that the Judicial Officer be so removed for his inability to discharge the functions of his office or appointment (whether arising from infirmity of mind or of body) or for misconduct or contravention of the Code of Conduct.

Thus, the point can even be made, that unlike other judicial officers who can be removed by the President acting upon the recommendation of the National Judicial Council, the Chief Justice of Nigeria can only be removed by the President upon receipt of an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate!

Given that the above provisions are clear, it becomes more worrying to learn that aside from laying the proposed charges, the prosecution has also filed an application seeing an order directing the CJN to recuse himself from office pending the conclusion of the trial.

On the whole, the entire episode is one that unfairly denigrates not only the Judiciary but also the Constitution of the land.

By proceeding as proposed, the government is unwittingly or perhaps deliberately a wrong impression in the minds of millions of Nigerians that the Judiciary is a criminal organisation.

For the sake of our democracy, this is a misconception that must not be allowed to fester. No country, no matter how well-intentioned its political leaders are, can aspire to greatness if its judicial arm is denigrated and held in contempt.

While the Judiciary itself must be awake to its huge responsibilities, its efforts in this regard will surely not be helped by the erosion of its independence.
