Anita Oyakhilome has been excluded from the newly released October-2014 edition of Rhapsody of Realities, Christ Embassy's monthly devotional. The devotional, which was started many years ago by the now estranged couple, usually had both their pictures and writings in the pages, but in this new 31-page edition, there's not one pic or article attributed to Pastor Anita, just pastor Chris. Also, the back cover of the magazine which usually had a picture of the couple now has only Pastor Chris on it. According to reports by Silicon India, mobile phones will reach a staggering 7.3 billion by the end 2014 – meaning for the first time in history there will more mobiles than humans. While that may sound nice to your ears, it isn’t, at least according to Ding’s CEO. While welcoming the news, Mark Roden, CEO Ding* said: “Mobile phones have the ability to drastically improve lives in some of the poorest parts of the world where communications are restricted.” However, he warns the announcement may not be as sweet as it sounds. “No matter how many mobiles exist – they are a useless tool unless they have credit. We are excited at the growth of mobile phones across the world and our mission now, is to help ensure these phones stay topped-up.” With more than USD$ 400billion transferred in money remittances every year, international top-up is an easy, fast and safe alternative to support home. Researchers at ding* have found that mobile phone owners in developing countries will forgo groceries to top-up their phones and confirmed that as many as 44 percent of ding* customers consider the service a “need”. Mobile phones play an increasingly important role in developing countries where, despite 60% of people living on less than $2 a day, the majority own mobile phones. A topped- up mobile phone makes it easier for people to communicate and gives them access to information through data. In a way, it’s no surprise Google have just confirmed that more people on the earth have access to a mobile than a toothbrush. To tell you the truth, I really don't like soccer. You won't ever find me on a soccer thread whooping for a particular team or what not. In the society today, it seems being a fan of soccer is what makes you a man but I beg to disagree. During my first year in the University, a lecturer asked all soccer fans to raise their hands up and the whole class (I mean the guys) all raised their hands except me and the lecturer asked if I didn't like the game and I just shook my head. From somewhere in the class, a guy shouted "He's gay". Although I didn't reply to him but I felt bad because I don't see any reason why hating soccer makes me less of a man. Pls tell me guys, is it wrong if one doesn't like soccer? |

Victors may write the history, but inspiring success stories can all too often overshadow less spectacular tales of brave people who pushed society forward without honors or recognition. Even the ones who paved the way for the eventual victor. We all know Neil Armstrong, but fewer remember the second man to set foot on the moon, Buzz Aldrin. The third moon- walker, Charles Conrad , may have known that nobody was watching, which is probably why, instead of solemn words, he let rip with a simple “Whoopee!” Norwegian Roald Amundsen also received much more credit than British Robert F. Scott after beating him to the North Pole by just a month. Scott died on his way back, which of course didn’t help, soon after realizing how close he’d come to glory. But really, in the bigger scheme of things, what’s a month? And have you ever heard the name of Bert Hinkler ? Probably not. He flew across the Atlantic second, soon after Charles Lindbergh launched headlines worldwide. Still, being first is often difficult to prove and even then, not always a guarantee of fame. Take Thorfinn Karlsefni . He was one of the Vikings who settled in Newfoundland, Canada, about 500 years before Columbus set sail for the New World. Yet the sailor from Genoa is still widely credited as being the European who discovered America. The Wright brothers might not have been the first to fly an airplane either. Richard Pearse , a farmer from New Zealand, is said to have flown 350 yards with a plane of his own invention, nine months before the Wright brothers took off. Another contender for the title is Gustave Whitehead , a German engineer living Connecticut who claimed to have flown in 1901, two years before the Wrights did. Countless pioneers have gone unrecognized in the field of engineering, where a patent often means the difference between glory and oblivion. The microprocessor, for example, was first invented by Geoffrey Dummer, a British electronics engineer. But he abandoned the idea after his presentation of the device failed to impress the attendees of a conference in 1952. Six years later, Jack St. Claire Kilby, an American scientist, filed a patent for an almost identical device. The invention made billions for Texas Instruments. The most emblematic case of legal woes is probably that of Antonio Meucci , who invented the first phone-like device in 1854. He filed a caveat at the U.S. Patent Office, essentially putting a temporary hold on the idea before filing for a full patent. But soon he went bankrupt and could not afford the $10 fee to renew it. It expired in 1874 and, two years later, Alexander Graham Bell filed his patent. In 2002, the U.S. House of Representatives declared , “If Meucci had been able to pay the $10 fee to maintain the caveat after 1874, no patent could have been issued to Bell,” but school books still list Bell as the telephone’s inventor. Many women’s contributions have also fallen through the cracks. In 1962, James Watson and Francis Crick won the Nobel Prize for discovering the DNA’s double helix structure, an achievement that was only possible because of Rosalind Franklin, the biophysicist who took the first pictures of life’s building blocks and received no credit for the discovery. Sometimes even those who completely fail to reach their objectives pave the road for others to succeed. It’s the case of countless 19th-century explorers who, driven by curiosity and national rivalry, joined a race to the farthest corners of the Earth. When John Hanning Speke discovered the source of the Nile in 1858 he did so, in part, based on the unsuccessful previous attempts of little-known explorers like Robert James Gordon, Henry Pike Welford and John Ledyard, all of whom lost their lives trying to solve the century’s most gripping mystery. Also forgotten have been many who helped their life partners to the finish line, like Florence Barbara von Sass, the wife of famous African adventurer Sam Baker. She accompanied him in all his expeditions. Still, history’s most neglected heroes might be the local men and women who worked tirelessly to get others into the history books and received barely a footnote in return. It’s the case of most African porters whose role in exploring their own continent has been widely understated. Their first names — Bombay, Chuma, Susi, Uledi — are sometimes mentioned in explorers’ journals and some received honors from the Royal Geographic Society , but their exploits have gone largely unsung. Likewise, Sherpa guides risk their lives helping Westerners up the Himalayas but their names are often left out when recounting mountaineering feats. A notable exception was Nepalese Tenzing Norgay , who received wide recognition and a medal from the Queen of England for reaching the summit of Mount Everest with his friend Edmund Hillary. History’s limelight is capricious. Why should those who fall slightly short of the mark not be recognized for persistence and courage? Theodore Roosevelt put it best in a 1910 speech : “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena (…) who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.” |

President Goodluck Jonathan says the Boko Haram sect has murdered no fewer than 13,000 Nigerians. Describing the trend as “unacceptable,” he challenged the international community to put in more efforts to stop the global menace of terrorism. Speaking at a high level meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York, United States of America, Jonathan said terrorism has had destructive effects on the country in the past five years. “Nigeria knows too well the destructive effects of terrorist activities. Over the past five years, we have been, and are still confronting threats posed by Boko Haram to peace and stability, predominantly in the North Eastern part of our country” , Mr. Jonathan said. “The costs are high: over 13,000 people have been killed, whole communities razed, and hundreds of persons kidnapped, the most prominent being the mindless kidnap of our innocent daughters from Chibok Secondary School, in North East Nigeria”. While appreciating the UN’s leadership for convening the meeting to address global terrorism concerns, he said the resolution adopted by member states was a critical step in mobilizing international action against terrorism. The president said his government had doggedly mobilised resources at its disposal to ensure that the scourge was rooted out of Nigeria. He listed some of such efforts to include the Presidential Initiative for the North East, Victims Support Fund as well as the Safe Schools Initiative, which is supported by former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. Continuing he said, “We must now capitalize on the commitment and evident determination of the Security Council to seek more innovative responses to the threat of terrorism and in particular to the growing menace of foreign fighters” , Mr. Jonathan said. “The council should be concerned about the existence of sources of arming and funding terrorists. Evidence has shown that Boko Haram, for instance, is resourced largely from outside our country. “We must also commit to ensuring that countries which are in the frontline of this challenge, receive adequate support from the international community. “The Resolution that we have adopted here today is a critical first step in mobilising international action” , said the Nigeria’s President. Mr. Jonathan said Nigerians and the world were horrified at the gruesome murder of two American journalists and a British aid worker by elements linked to Islamic State, ISIS. He noted that the murders typified the new face of global terrorism marked by executions, extreme brutality and impunity, pointing out that Al Qaeda in the Arab Maghreb, Al Shabaab in Somalia, and Boko Haram in North Eastern Nigeria as some of the groups that share the agenda of unleashing terror, destruction and instability around the world. The nation’s leader noted that bands of foreign fighters have added a troubling dimension to the emerging phase of global terrorism. Jonathan recalled that from targeted attacks by Al Qaeda a few years ago, the world now witness thousands of mobile terrorists sweeping across vast areas, destroying lives, and even attempting to hold territory. He, however, thanked the American President, Barrack Obama, and the US Government for the security governance initiative, which was conceived at the US-Africa Summit in August. “I believe, if expeditiously implemented, the initiative will enhance security on the continent. “Only by united action and firm resolve can we check this raging threat to humanity, and also build the enduring structures that will resist their re- emergence”, he added.

Fresh reports say that Boko Haram group has finally agreed to free all the Chibok girls for 18 sect commanders currently in detention. It would be recalled that less than two weeks ago it was reported that the insurgents had agreed to release only 30 female students abducted in April in exchange for 18 key group members. The decision was allegedly made after the Nigerian authorities had held secret talks with one of Boko Haram seniors identified as Umar. This Saturday it was gathered that the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Nigerian government were holding long- time negotiations on the issue . Finally, according to the Nation, the agreement on 219 girls release was reached. It has been reported that the two parties asked their representatives to go back to their leaders to discuss the new conditions. At the meeting said to be facilitated by the President, Civil Rights Congress (CRC), Comrade Shehu Sani, it was allegedly claimed that if the girls were tried to be released by force, it might lead to fatalities. Chibok girls showed in the video released by Abubakar Shekau One of those who attended the session said: “The sect shifted its position and agreed to release all the girls instead of 30 Christian married girls it had promised. But Boko Haram said it does not trust the government going by previous experience. If the government had respected previous talks, the Chibok girls were initially meant to be off the hook during the Eid-el Fitr festival. Again about two weeks ago, a delegation was already in Maiduguri until the swap deal was bungled. Some security agents only advised on the release of six out of the 18 leaders of the sect. They rated the rest 12 as dangerous. When the insurgents found out, they backtracked and demanded the release of the 18 leaders. The development paved the way for the latest talks in Abuja which involved the ICRC.” The source also said that the Nigerian authorities promised to release the 18 leaders as soon as all the girls were let go. Another source present at the session said: “We generally agreed that all the parties should go back to their leaders on the agreement reached. The government said no to piecemeal release of the girls and Boko Haram claimed that it will not have any business with the government until all the 18 leaders of the sect are freed. After the Eid-el- Kabir festival, the two parties will meet again on the terms to finalise the agreement or part ways. Before the meeting rose, Boko Haram representatives warned against the use of force to liberate the girls. It also made it clear that it had the “capacity to take on the Federal Government for the next 45 years.” Regarding the insurgency in the North-East of Nigeria one of the sources said that “the outcome of the latest round of talks will determine whether they should ceasefire or not” . It would be recalled that more than 200 girls were abducted on April 14 by Boko Haram in Chibok of the troubled Borno State.
