1. FIFA Eligibility Rules

FIFA’s rules say a player can represent a national team if they meet one of these:
Born in the country, or
Have a parent or grandparent born in the country, or
Have lived in the country for a minimum of 5 years after turning 18.
Additionally, if a player has already played for one country in a competitive senior match, they usually need FIFA approval to switch allegiance before playing for another country.

2. How National Teams Field Players

Before a match, the national federation submits a squad list to FIFA for official competitions.
For players who have previously represented another country, the federation must include FIFA’s clearance documentation.
FIFA doesn’t “check every player manually” before kickoff; they rely on federations to follow the rules and submit the proper paperwork.

3. What Can Go Wrong

Sometimes, federations make mistakes or assumptions, for example:
A player switches allegiance, but the paperwork isn’t fully processed yet.
A federation misinterprets eligibility rules.
An administrative oversight — the player is called up without proper clearance.

If that happens, FIFA can:

Declare the player ineligible.
Award the match to the opposing team, or impose other sanctions.

4. Key Point

It’s not automatic. FIFA relies on federations to do their part.
Mistakes are rare at top levels because lawyers and officials handle eligibility, but they do happen occasionally.

This is a serious crime conviction. Stop dancing on the graves of his victims by attempting to sound as if their violent deaths is collateral damage in order to foul up the conviction of Kanu as political. It is criminal, real lives were lost and real people are grieving!

What was the Supreme Court's position?
It is the Party who informs INEC of the Primary and INEC has nothing to do but go there to observe. If INEC is informed by the National leadership of the Party and they choose not to go, it is not on the Party.

In this case, INEC admitted in their affidavit that they had been notified, so INEC may not be wrong for not going there because they have a Court order but does that now invalidate what happened in Ibadan?

Pray tell me one section of the Electoral Act that mandates INEC to be present in the National Convention, Conference, Congress or meeting of a Political Party? (See Section 82(1-5)).

It is in Primaries election that INEC is MANDATED to be present.
