LiteratureBarriers To Brilliance: Questioning Ana's Submission Process By Itegugu Odjiko by Pengician(op): 10:43am On Mar 30
This is a response to
THE ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN AUTHORS (ANA) MAIDEN EDITION OF HRM EZE M.O.KANU/ANA PRIZE FOR YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE

The announcement of the prize by the Association of Nigerian Authors raises serious ethical and structural concerns, particularly around accessibility, fairness, and transparency, issues that go to the heart of literary culture in Nigeria.

At the core lies the requirement that writers pay an entry fee of ₦10,000 to compete for a ₦300,000 prize. This introduces a troubling ethical tension. Literary prizes are traditionally designed to recognize merit, not to monetize aspiration. By attaching a financial cost to participation, the process risks excluding exactly the category it claims to promote, young and emerging writers. In a context where authors already struggle with high publishing costs, limited distribution, and minimal institutional support, such fees function less as administrative necessities and more as barriers to entry. This raises a fundamental question: is the prize rewarding excellence, or filtering participation based on financial capacity?

Closely related is the issue of fairness. The competition requires six physical copies of each book in addition to the entry fee, an added burden that disproportionately affects self-published or low-income authors. While publishers may absorb such costs, independent writers, often the most innovative voices, are placed at a disadvantage. A prize for “Young Adult Literature” should ideally expand access and visibility, yet these requirements risk narrowing the field to those who can afford participation. This undermines the credibility of the prize as an inclusive literary platform.

The question of transparency further complicates the matter. The prize is said to be endowed by a donor, yet participants are still required to pay entry fees. This creates ambiguity: what exactly do these fees fund? Are they used for administrative costs, jury remuneration, or event logistics? Without clear disclosure, the system appears opaque, and opacity in literary institutions often breeds distrust. If fees are necessary, accountability should be explicit, itemized, justified, and publicly communicated.

A balanced comparison with established global and regional prizes highlights these concerns more sharply. Prestigious awards such as the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Nigeria Prize for Literature, and the Caine Prize for African Writing do not require entry fees from writers. While it is true that these prizes operate with larger endowments and institutional backing, the principle they embody is critical: literary recognition should not be contingent on a writer’s ability to pay. Even at smaller scales, many credible prizes maintain this standard to preserve integrity and encourage broad participation.

Ultimately, the structure of this prize reflects a deeper tension within the literary ecosystem: the shift from nurturing talent to commodifying access. If literary bodies like ANA are to maintain legitimacy and moral authority, they must prioritize inclusivity, ensure procedural fairness, and operate with full transparency. Otherwise, initiatives intended to celebrate literature risk reinforcing the very inequalities they ought to challenge.

LiteratureWhen A Soul Departs, Humans Suddenly Become More Expressive by Pengician(op): 10:10am On Feb 13
When a soul departs, humans suddenly become more expressive.

If not, tell me why people get so eager to write beautiful tributes after a loved one has passed on.

Why do they spend lavishly on food, drinks, and ceremonies during funerals?

Humans will always be humans.

Give me some encouragement while I am alive; do not come and baptize everywhere with encomiums when I am gone.

When you are alive, they will not critique your work.
When you are gone, praises will flood everywhere.
When you are struggling, they will not lend a helping hand.
When you are gone, they will sing your praises.

Only one soul in Nigeria will bring out your evil deeds and paint you as a devil when you are gone, that is Professor Wole Soyinka.

When you publish your works,
they will not buy them.
But when you are dead and gone, journals and the internet will have thousands of beautiful words about you,
what you were
and what you were not.

Why are humans so heartless?

On your birthdays, they will act as if they are not online.
They will not wish you well,
not that you are demanding financial assistance from them.

Pamper me while I am alive.

One man stands out among men in my life,
not my father,
but Engr. Richie Ovuorho.
The support he has given me on this journey of life is so immense that I could write a memoir about it.

Godwin Ogheneruemu is another man who has rendered me countless help in this life.
For him, I can write a thousand pages.

Engr. Friday Eruemuare, Victory Eruemuare, and Agberia Eruemuare have done wonderfully well for me.

Mrs. Isosiya Joy Eruemuare, my precious wife, is another beautiful soul whose presence means everything to me.

The list is truly endless.

When Ernest Hemingway became depressed, countless writers ran away. He eventually committed suicide. Immediately afterward, the same writers who deserted him flooded the world’s libraries with praises of his work.

A struggling writer, journalist, engineer, or business tycoon may be wallowing in pain beside you, yet you pretend not to notice. The same person you will later baptize with praises when he or she passes on.

Do not always wait for people to die before you praise them. Do it when they can see, read, and hear it.

When Prof. Chinua Achebe danced with his ancestors, the world published countless essays in his honor.

When Buchi Emecheta passed on, the kind of essays I read made me ask, “Are humans truly this caring, or do they only care when a soul is gone?”

The celebrations I witnessed during my father’s funeral, late Mr. Ognererumiovwin Joseph Eruemuare, made me conclude that the hearts of men can be wicked. Canopies everywhere, known and unknown musicians across Urhobo land, men and women from all walks of life, in-laws, friends, family, colleagues, all gave him a grand farewell.

The death of critic Biodun Jeyifo gathered more essays than any university faculty in Nigeria, no exaggeration.

My name is
Goodnews Andrew Eruemuare (LSA).

I may say I lack sense, but you who claim to have it should use it wisely.

LiteratureSUI Meets Comrade Samuel Ogbemuvire Ogude, Publisher/editor- In- Chief by Pengician(op): 4:17pm On Nov 08, 2025
Speak Up Interview (SUI)

Today on SUI, our guest is an Editor-in-Chief of a magazine.

Introduction:

Question:
Please, can you briefly tell us about yourself and the magazine you represent?

I am Comrade Samuel Ogbemuvire Ogude, Publisher/Editor- in- Chief of Bailout Magazine and Assistant Secretary, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Warri Correspondents' Chapel. I am also a member, Association of Nigeria Authors, Delta State Chapter. By the grace of God, l have written many creative works among which is The Pregnant Tomorrow, Otafia etc.( Drama texts).

Editorial Process and Content Strategy Content Selection:

How do you decide which articles or stories to feature in the magazine versus the online version?

*For a story to be published or featured in Bailout Magazine, it must be of standard form. The story should be well written and devoid of libelous or defamation . That is, the story should not contain what will drag the the medium to litigation(Court). This is why, every source of story must be investigated- the story must be from a reliable source and factual. Bailout Magazine does not copy story from the Internet to publish. It prefers investigative and exclusive stories.

Editorial Approach:
What's your approach to balancing evergreen content with timely, news-driven articles, especially given the difference in publication frequency between the print and online versions?

* Bailout Magazine is both hard copy and Online publications. While the hardcopy is showcased once a month, the online version comes out on daily basis. The hard copy is delayed as a result of the detail analysis of some stories to be featured which is a characteristics of magazines while the online is published almost immediately after the event is covered and the story written or contributor of stories sends such stories to our e-mail for publication. So, it faster to publish the online version than the hard copy of the medium. Both are good because they all meant to enlighten and inform the public at different times.

Content Calendar:
Can you walk me through your process for planning and managing content across both the print and online platforms?

* Editorial Process of Bailout Magazine takes some time. The hard copy version takes more time than of the online version. For the hard copy, the correspondent(report) assigned to that assignment goes about it. After the investigation (coverage), he writes his report(s) and submits to the Assistant Editor who goes through. He looks at the structure and balances it. In case the story is not well written, he can rewrite- the structure that would make it suitable for publication. After that, he passes the news to Proof Reader who works on grammatical structure, including use of words, sentences etc. Thereafter, the Proof Reader passes the stories to the Editor-in-Chief who now does the final scrutiny of the news items before it is certified for publication.
Thereafter, there is quick meeting of Editorial Board Members to decide news items to be on Editorial Page and possibly the major headline of the Magazine.
Then, the Production Department takes over from there and does the page planning of all the news items using the dummy( Sketch on paper). And thereafter, it is sent for publication. The Circulation Department takes over from there and ensures that the Magazine gets to the public- readers.
For the Online version, it is much easy. News publication does not take this long process. After the Correspondent submits the news to the subEditor, the subEditor passes it on to Proof Reader who goes through and submits it to the Editor- in- Chief. It is finally passed on to Online Editor to publish. However, the major headline must be determined by Editorial Board members.

Leadership and Team Management
Team Collaboration:
How do you foster collaboration and creativity among your team members, particularly when working on projects that involve both print and online content?

* Bailout Magazine leadership and team Management is superb. All Departments, starting from Reportorial to Editorial, Production and Circulation Department collaborate to ensure the Magazine sees the light of the day. In the absence of one department, the other can not function. That is why, every one must be on his toes to see that the Magazine is published.

Feedback and Revisions:
How do you handle feedback and revisions from writers or other editors, and what's your approach to providing constructive criticism?

* For every publication in Bailout Magazine whether print( hard copy) or Online, there is always feedback. The feedback helps us to improve on our publications. In most cases, in Bailout Magazine online version, if there is wrong spellings of names, though rare, we correct immediately. But most cases, readers commend us for good job done because we are very meticulous in our duties. This is why, many Editors and Writers send stories to us for publication. And upon receiving such stories, we do not only do the investigation of the storied but work on them to suit our medium before publication.

Mentorship:
What role do you think mentorship plays in the development of writers and editors, and how do you incorporate mentorship into your team's workflow?

* Mentorship generally in Journalism( news writing) helps to groom the young ones or up coming ones( Fresh graduates ) who studied Mass Communication or Related Media either in Polytechnic or University and cub Editors in news editing. And as for Bailout Magazine, we have students who are on Industrial Attachments to our medium. Apart from fixing some days within the week for tutorials where they(students) are launched into technicalities of Media practice properly, they are seconded to experienced correspondents or reporters go for news gathering and reporting. And by the end of their stay,(expiration of due time- industrial attachments), they go back to their respective schools for better performance at school and after graduation, their respective places of assignments.

Industry Insights and Trends
Industry Trends:
What trends do you see shaping the future of magazine publishing, and how is Bailout Magazine adapting to these changes?

* News industry has grown and still developing very fast especially with the advent of the new media: Facebook, Whatsapp and Internet. It is the duty of news organizations to keep pace with this development. As for Bailout Magazine, we not are resting in our oars as we are posed to move with the speed. This accounts for why, our online version is always out on daily basis. Our website is always worked on in order to be at the top while others follow by the grace of God.

Digital Integration:
How do you see the relationship between print and digital content evolving in the magazine industry, and what strategies is Bailout Magazine employing to stay relevant?

* Both the print and digital content of news bulletin now compliment each other. In Bailout Magazine, we publish the hard copy monthly and online daily. The Management of Bailout Magazine will continue to do their best to enlighten and educate the public with information on sports, etc.

Audience Engagement:
What methods do you use to measure the success of your content strategy, and how do you stay informed about changes in reader preferences and industry developments?

* Bailout Magazine publishes news items daily online and measures its success of its content through feedback from the audience who are heterogenous. Many readers(audience) make comments on our publications especially on the content of our news. They laud the content and writing techniques and this has spurred us to improve on our publications. Some, we write back to inform them on our need to keep on with good job. While on the hard copy, we receive calls from our performance each time we come out with our quality and standard news items.

Challenges and Opportunities
Challenges:
What are some of the biggest challenges you're currently facing as an editor-in-chief, and how do you see Bailout Magazine overcoming them?

As an Editor-in-Chief of Bailout Magazine, l face the challenges of finance. With the rising cost of printing materials, the organization spends much money in the procurement of printing materials and publishing cost. At present, the organization has not been able to purchase its printing machine so, we pay other printing press to get magazine published. However, Bailout Magazine Management has technically increased the charges of publication of news items and advertisements to enable us meet up the challenges of high cost of publications.

Opportunities:
What opportunities do you see for growth and innovation in the magazine industry, and how is Bailout Magazine positioned to take advantage of these opportunities?

* Magazine as an aspect of media industry grows on daily basis especially in this digital era. With the presence of the Internet and WhatsApp, Correspondents at different locations filed their news to the organization's Central Point computer for both Editorial Board Members to work the news to be published.
Though, many Magazine industries have folded up due to inability to print and attend to staff's welfare especially staff's salary, as a result of finance, the ones still printing are surviving by the grace of God.
Bailout Magazine is a growing organization that has harped on digital age of Internet, Facebook and Whatsapp to grow speedily. These inventions have made it possible for Correspondents to file news items to subEditor to be worked on before it gets to Editor-in-Chief before it goes for publications.

Sustainability:
How do you ensure the magazine's content remains relevant and engaging to a diverse audience, and what strategies do you employ to sustain reader interest over time?

Magazine news content would continue to be relevant to inform the diverse audience on different news areas of life. Unlike the conventional newspapers, Magazine presents indepth analysis of stories.Bailout Magazine would continue to churn out, reliable, accurate and factual information from the society for the consumption of the public.

PoliticsGoodnews Andrew Eruemuare Write Festus Keyamo by Pengician(op): 7:59pm On Nov 06, 2025
Dear Festus Keyamo,

Your recent silence on critical issues affecting Nigeria is deafening. As Aviation Minister, your voice was notably absent until a young lady was strip-searched by an airline staff member. It's concerning that your activism seems selective, only sparking to life when international attention is focused on Nigeria.

Like some of your predecessors, your actions appear driven more by self-interest than genuine concern for the nation's well-being. When was the last time you spoke out against the killings of Christians in Nigeria? Must an outsider comment before you take action? Your silence is not only disappointing but also telling.

Your defense of the government's actions, despite claims of targeted violence against Christians, rings hollow. As a seasoned lawyer and advocate for human rights, you know the importance of acknowledging and addressing injustices. Instead, you choose to toe the government line, dismissing these claims without providing substantial evidence to support your assertions.

Your letter to President Trump, while well-intentioned, comes across as dismissive and lacking in depth. You failed to acknowledge the legitimate concerns of many Nigerians who feel their government isn't doing enough to protect them. By simply denying the claims without addressing the underlying issues, you're not contributing to a meaningful solution.

Furthermore, your emphasis on President Tinubu's religious tolerance and his wife being a pastor doesn't necessarily translate to effective governance or protection for all citizens. The security challenges in Nigeria are complex and multifaceted, requiring more than just token gestures of religious inclusivity.

As a public figure, you're expected to uphold a certain standard of integrity and accountability. Your recent actions fall short of this expectation. Rather than blaming others for Nigeria's problems, perhaps it's time to take a closer look at what you can do differently to contribute positively to the nation's growth and development.

In conclusion, I urge you to take a more nuanced approach to addressing the challenges facing Nigeria. Acknowledge the complexities of the issues, and work towards finding solutions that benefit all citizens, regardless of their faith or background.

Sincerely,
Goodnews Andrew Eruemuare (SIR A-ONE)

Harder!
Faster!
This is better.

The countless nonsense that proceeds as a result of the DO is overwhelming. From Sunday to Sunday in Nigeria, the air is thick with the offensive stench of iniquity. Clubs, hotels, houses, and matrimonial beds are defiled with no sense of remorse.

A married woman will comfortably spread her legs for another man, different from her husband. He will release his thick white liquid inside her. Her innocent husband will nurture another man's child for years. If you do the math on feeding a pregnant woman from the first day of pregnancy until the ninth month of delivery, you would realize that the cost of raising that child from day one until maturity would amount to a fantastic investment—enough to erect a three-bedroom apartment. At maturity, one man from nowhere will walk in and claim that child as the biological father.

Dear MEN, if you have what it takes, kindly run a DNA test on your child when that child is still in the womb. It will save you a lot of pain in the future.

I pray not to receive any sad calls again of men taking their own lives as a result of the extramarital affairs of their wives.

With a heavy heart, he recounted the relentless siege of poverty that had plagued both him and his lineage. Not a single soul in his family had ever managed to procure a brand-new vehicle; their bloodline seemed doomed to be shackled by financial despair.

Obibilogba listened intently, casting his cowries upon the ground and chanting in the ancient language of the spirits: “Ofovwi be ogba-a, die soro ivwritesi vwo gbe egbada-a?” The words, thick with mystique, translated as, “A warrior is never tired of war; why is the scrotum of the pig a part of this dance?”

“What connection do you share with the man named Udje?” Baba’s voice held an undercurrent of authority.

“He is my late father,” replied Ugbobine, confusion etching his brow.

“His specter is the architect of your misfortunes, of your entire family’s wretched fate.”

“But he departed this world even before I was born. He passed on while I was just six months nestled in my mother’s womb,” Ugbobine protested, desperation rising in his voice.

“Silence, foolish child! How dare you question the gods?” Baba thundered, his tone final.

“Forgive me, revered one. What must I do to break free from these bonds of misery? I yearn to be a billionaire! I long to revel in the grandeur of life, indulging in lavishness, overflowing with Azul, Moët, champagne, and other opulent wines,” he implored, his desires spilling forth like a torrent.

“Listen carefully, for your path is straightforward,” Baba began, his words precise and deliberate. “I will set you free in conjunction with Igbidigbi, the greatest deity of this land upon which you tread. The cost for your liberation is N100,000. Once you deliver this sum, I shall reveal the items necessary for the sacrifices and rituals. Mark my words: within ninety days of the performance, you shall be transformed.”

“That is a modest price; I am prepared,” Ugbobine declared, a flicker of hope igniting within him. “I was pointed to you by Omonigho, one of the billionaires you gifted power to merely three moons ago. Here is the money. Accept it, Baba.”

“Good son, you have made an honorable choice. As I take this money, I absorb your poverty and misfortune. You must procure for me the kidney of a housefly and the liver of a mosquito. Once you do this, I shall perform the rites necessary to set you free like a bird unbound,” Baba instructed, his tone imbued with unyielding conviction.

“No trouble at all, greatest of the great,” Ugbobine replied, filled with fervor and purpose.

He hastened from the shrine, the weight of his newfound ambition buoying his steps. But as he arrived home, an unsettling realization dawned upon him: the items Baba demanded for the ritual were impossible to procure. A bitter taste of despair filled his mouth as he gnashed his teeth and swallowed his frustration.

“Baba has scammed the scammer! He should have asked for the bile of a Mosquito too” he murmured to himself, the sting of betrayal mingling with a sense of undeniable foolishness.

EducationThe Forces Holding The Urhobo Language Hostage By Goodnews Andrew Eruemuare by Pengician(op): 11:37am On Aug 15, 2025
Each day, the ranks of Urhobo speakers swell, yet despite the growing number of those who cherish and articulate this vibrant language, it remains absent from platforms like Translator. This absence is not mere oversight; it is a battle against the forces staunchly opposed to the advancement of Urhobo.
While obscure tongues from around the world find their place in the digital realm, the Urhobo language suffers under the weight of the "Pull Him Down" (PHD) syndrome that lurks among its own speakers and writers. Other lesser-known languages flourish, buoyed by unity and a collective desire for progress.

Numerous factors contribute to the stagnation of Urhobo, but I will highlight a few:

1. Dispassionate Educators
In the halls of learning, some instructors of the Urhobo language seem less concerned with its flourishing than with their paychecks. Some individuals stand as a testament to this indifference; they often respond to Urhobo with English, dismissing the language as a naive relic not worthy of their voice. It is likely that their own children do not speak the language, a fact that echoes the neglect of this language.

2. Pull Him Down (PHD) Syndrome
The pervasive PHD syndrome stifles progress within the community. Critics claim that one lacks the sophistication to contribute meaningfully to the language’s evolution, even as those who possess such sophistication remain idle, contributing nothing but skepticism.

3. Demand for Scholarships
There is a pressing need for the sons and daughters of Urhobo, as well as institutions and religious organizations, to establish scholarships that prioritize the language and its study. This point, I believe, requires no further elaboration.

4. The “If I Don’t Do It, No One Will” Mentality
Some figures within our community cling to control, unwilling to allow others to champion the language. They believe that if they are not at the helm, no one else should take charge, stunting any effort towards collective advancement.

5. Scarcity of Publications
A language requires abundant publications—poetry, drama, prose, textbooks, and journals—to thrive. While Urhobo has seen some publications, much more remains to be done. We can do better.

6. The Role of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU)
The UPU, headquartered in Uvwiamuge, Agbarho, has made commendable efforts, yet they too have succumbed to political distractions that hinder proper development for the language.

7. Desire for a World-Class Library
By now, Urhobo should boast a world-class library, a sanctuary for its literature and culture.

8. The Issue of Okpe Alienation
The Okpe community possesses a rich library and numerous publications in their own language, declaring independence from the Urhobo identity. This separation only widens the rift within our cultural tapestry.

9. Lack of Support for Language Promoters
Promoters of the Urhobo language often find themselves without encouragement or resources, impeding their noble efforts.

The Urhobos can armed themselves with the words of Ephesians 6:12
"Ọ dianẹ ugboma vẹ ọbara a họnra na-a, ẹkẹvuọvo ikpihwo ride, ogangan ride, ihwo ride ri suẹn akpọ rẹ ebri nana, otuofovwi rẹ erhi umwemwu re hẹ obo obenu na."
Ephesians 6:12: "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." This verse encourages believers to stand firm against spiritual forces that may seek to undermine their language, faith and culture.

In recognizing the champions of our language, I humbly acknowledge the valuable contributions of the Urhobo Studies Association (USA), Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) the Urhobo Historical Society (UHS), Urhobo Bible Translators, translators of hymns, novels, plays, and poetry; as well as educators like Prof. Rose O. Aziza, Prof. Sunny Awhefeada, Prof. G.G. Darah, Lucky Ejobee, Moses Darah, Dr. Odeh, Dr. Mrs. Aleh, Mrs. Ajiboye, Rev. Godwin Ivworin, Diffre Odiete, Prof. Ukeri, Prof. Obitaba, A.E. Osubele, Ukoko Re Emoto, Urhobo World United Union (UWUU), The Society for the Promotion of the Urhobo Language and Culture (SPULC), Atamu Social Club, Sen. Pius Ewherido, Bishop Dikeji Mimiyerijesu the only son that had the audacity to change his surname among many others whose names slip my mind. Their dedication has propelled the Urhobo language to greater heights. I still cherish the scholarship of N100,000 awarded to me by Sen. Pius Akpor Ewherido during my undergraduate studies at DELSU, an act of generosity that stands in memory after his untimely passing. And not forgetting the wonderful help of Urhobo Progress Union America (UPUA) that gave me a scholarship of USD $500 (N75,000) then. Their assistance are evergreen in my heart.

Urhobo, a South-Western Edoid language spoken by roughly 7.1 million people in Southern Nigeria, primarily in Delta and Bayelsa States, boasts a rich tapestry of linguistic features:

- Phonology
Urhobo has a relatively simple sound system with 7 vowels, forming two harmonic sets: /i e ɛ a o ɔ u/ and /ĩ ẽ ɛ̃ ã ɔ̃ õ ũ/. It also features a conservative consonant inventory with 3 nasals and 5 oral consonants (/ɾ, l, β̞, j, w/) that have nasal allophones before nasal vowels.
- Tones: The language employs two primary tones which can form rising and falling tones, adding depth to its spoken form.
- Syntax: Adhering to a Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) word order, it stands as a communicative structure.

The Urhobo people, primarily found in Delta and Bayelsa States, are its steadfast speakers. Various dictionaries and linguistic studies have documented the language, affirming its academic relevance.

As a member of the Niger-Congo language family, Urhobo relates to other Edoid languages such as Esan, Etsako, and Ivbiosakon. With an ISO 639-3 code of "urh" and a Glottolog code of "urho1239", it occupies a notable place in language classification.

The largest ethnic group in Delta State is the Urhobo people. They are predominantly found in Delta Central and occupy nine local government areas, with significant presence in major cities like Warri, Sapele, Abraka, Ughelli, Effurun, Oghara, Agbarho, and Ekpan. The Urhobo culture is rich and notable for its mud sculptures, bronze jewelry, canoes, and masquerade dances.
Occupations: Farming, trading, fishing, and hunting.
Monarchy System: Led by a king referred to as the Ovie, assisted by Ilorogun (Chiefs).
The Urhobo nation is comprised of 24 recognized kingdoms. These kingdoms represent the various clans and sub-cultures within the Urhobo people and are recognized by the Delta State government. The 24 kingdoms are: Olomu, Agbarho, Ogor, Idjerhe (Jesse), Okpe, Agbarha-Otor, Okparabe, Okere-Urhobo, Uvwie, Effurun-Otor, Arhavwarien, Udu, Orogun, Umiaghwa-Abraka, Orhuarivie-Abraka, Eghwu (Ewu), Ughelli, Evwreni, Agbarha-Ame, Ughievwen, Uwheru, Agbon, Oghara, Mosogar.
NOTE: Okpe said they are no longer part of Urhobo, but, the Urhobo nation still sees her as its Kingdom.

Currently, Urhobo is integrated into primary, secondary, and tertiary education, illustrating a foundation for its documentation and promotion. I proudly hold a B.A. in Linguistics/Urhobo from Delta State University (DELSU), where I found myself surrounded by passionate educators and a nurturing environment, replete with resources like a language shrine established by Rev. Godwin Ivworin and a world class phonetic laboratory by the department.

The comprehensive Urhobo Bible made available on Playstore is a good step in the right direction. With time, the audio can be added for features like self-reading, pronunciation etc. This will significantly advance the language's reach and utility.

The Urhobo is a language!
The Urhobo is a nation!
The Urhobo is a culture!

Eje igarri Urhobo vwerhe Urhobo.

LiteratureWoes Of A Troubled Land: Chronicles Of Nigeria, 2025 by Pengician(op): 11:04am On Aug 13, 2025
And it came to pass in the year 2025, that Nigeria, a land of abundant promise, did suffer greatly under the weight of famine and the soaring prices of goods, commodities, and services. And the ruler of the land was/is Tinubu, who proclaimed, "It's my turn to rule Nigeria!" And darkness did descend upon the land, for insecurity did reign. In Benue, in Abraka of Delta State, and in other lands, there were grievous wickedness and murder of citizens amidst the strife of herdsmen and farmers. Yet the president did turn a deaf ear, for he was busy with foreign journeys of medicine and tourism.

And because of the hardship of the economy, many did take their own lives in despair. And there was a woman who did exchange her daughter for a sack of rice weighing fifty kilograms, depositing the child with the seller and saying she would return, but she did not. And when the shop owner did trace the woman's dwelling with the help of the little girl and two men in uniform, they were astonished to find her with three other children eating plain white rice without stew, sauce, or soup. And the shop owner did weep, as Jesus wept in the scripture. And out of great kindness, the shop owner did give the woman fifty thousand naira to care for her children, for she was a widow neglected by both her family and the family of her husband.

And I, a writer, did wish to typeset one of my manuscripts, but the cost was such that it could buy a new television of modern make. And I was angry, and I did typeset the manuscript myself with my own device. And many youths without work were made aides to corrupt politicians, armed with unlimited data, modern gadgets, and good homes, that they might defend the president Tinubu against any who dare speak against him. And agriculture did languish, and education did worsen day by day. And there was no rule of law. And I did think the Nigeria Bar Association had ceased to be, for they were silent on the matters of the nation. And lawyers with great bellies did abound everywhere. And the opposition party, PDP, was the worst I had ever seen in the history of mankind, for they were helpless and did not stir the ruling party APC to do right. When APC was in opposition, they did make PDP to tremble with their words. But now those in PDP did focus on 2027, and some did cross over to the party ADC, which did not have what it takes to challenge Tinubu.

And I say, Tinubu is a president who did grab and run with power, taking over even when he was not in power. And now that he is incumbent, no force can remove him in 2027, save the Creator of the universe. For he has money, governors, senators, representatives, entrepreneurs, and men and women of all walks of life. He has INEC under him, the security architecture, and more. So how does one defeat such a corrupt enigma? If Nigerians are to unite to remove him in 2027, their unity must be greater than the combined force of Russia's Putin and China's Kim Jong, and their speed must exceed the speed of light. Until then, Nigerians must prepare for another election, not that of 2027, for it is a done deal for him (BAT).

LiteratureOgbe-udu: A Web Of Heritage And Community by Pengician(op): 7:31pm On Aug 09, 2025
Ogbe-Udu is indeed a web of tradition and creativity in Udu LGA, Delta State, Nigeria.

Nestled within the embrace of the Udu Local Government Area in Delta State, Nigeria, lies Ogbe-Udu, a tranquil community revered for its rich tapestry of culture and history. Though some may recognize Ogbe-Udu through the lens of politics or monarchy, it yearns to shine through the artistry of my words, blossoming from creativity ignited by a Muse—a narrative woven across the pages and digital realms.

Ogbe-Udu is a truly peaceful enclave, characterized by the intricate web of pipelines that crisscross its landscape. This community comprises five distinct quarters:

1. Ekrodogun—my cherished place of origin,
2. Ekroghele,
3. Ekrohwe,
4. Ekrimohwa,
5. Ekribovwe.

Together, these quarters form the heart of Ogbe-Udu. As of my last count before pursuing brighter horizons in 2004, my beloved community boasted 17 churches, a testimony to the unwavering faith of its residents, while also housing an array of educational institutions: Ogbe-Udu Primary School, where my own educational journey began, alongside Ogbe-Udu Secondary School and several private academies—though the churches still outnumbered the schools.

The community is steeped in tradition, marked by four significant deities:

1. Olodiama,
2. Oghwephia,
3. Edjo-Ogbe,
4. Edjo-Eya

Ogbe-Udu shares boundaries with neighboring communities—Okolor Waterside, Okolor Inland, Ohwahwa, and Ubogo—creating a vibrant mosaic of interlinked lives.

In the realm of influence, we have produced notable figures such as Simeon Ojitaire, an inventor with over 120 electrical/electronic inventions, thriving in Portharcourt with his team of apprentices. Bishop EbrubakiJesu Sele, Chief Stephen Sele, Titi (NEE Sele), Edesiri Sele, Engr. Friday O. Eruemuare (Authentic Aluminium) a.k.a Abraski, a structural Engineer of great repute, Pius Eruemuare, Goropazi the man with over 40 children, the Goru dynasty, Chief Barr. Andrew Orugbo, our one time Local Government chairman, and the revered monarch, HRM Engr. Mike Ogheneovo Orugbo, the Okporua 1, who presides over the entire Udu Kingdom, a collective of 32 communities, their unity fortified under one king and his distinguished first-class chiefs.

Luminaries of Ogbe-Udu in the Academic Firmament
In the hallowed halls of academia, Ogbe-Udu shines forth with a constellation of distinguished figures. Among them stand luminaries like Prof. Duweji Gwawo, the erudite Jibroma's (Prof.), Godwin Ogheneruemu, a theatre practitioner of profound distinction, weaves the intricate tapestry of dramatic arts with a mastery of great repute. His endeavors in the realm of theatre bespeak a dedication to the craft, imbuing performances with depth, nuance, and a resonance that echoes far beyond the stage's liminal boundaries. In the pantheon of theatre artisans, Godwin Ogheneruemu holds a place of esteem, his work a testament to the transformative power of the dramatic arts. Notably, he lent his directorial prowess to the staging of "Enrico And Sedico," a play of mine, in the year 2013, within the vibrant academic milieu of the Theatre Arts Department at Delta State University, Abraka. The remarkable Odiphri's family – a lineage that nurtured two extraordinary linguists of solid repute: Pius Eruemuare, a master of the French tongue, and Goodnews Andrew Eruemuare, a virtuoso in Linguistics with a focus on Urhobo. Across the unique dynasties of Ogbe-Udu's five quarters, notable family names echo with heritage and distinction: in Ekrodogun reside the Odiphri (my family), Egbowe, Onosigho; in Ekroghele, Fayan, Ogbaduemu holds sway; in Ekribovwe, Olori, Onovughe is ensconced; in Ekrohwe, Ogbe, Onokpanu is noted; and in Ekrimohwa, Ekokata is remembered. These are families that birthed almost all the souls in the entire community.

Our community represents a microcosm of industriousness, giving rise to intellectuals, doctors, nurses, engineers, and inventors.

Conveniently located, Ogbe-Udu is less than a 15-minute drive from Warri, connected by a vital road that leads through beautiful landscapes and bustling towns. As one travels from Warri, they encounter the majestic Udu Bridge, traversing straight to Express Junction, through Ujevwu, and finally to Ubogo before being warmly welcomed by the sign proclaiming, “Welcome to Ogbe-Udu Community, Udu LGA, Delta State, Nigeria.”

This is my divinely cherished home, the land of my birth, where I tread across the earth for 18 formative years. After completing secondary school, fate led me to the city of Port Harcourt, where I met my beloved wife, Mrs. Isosiya Joy Eruemuare, my queen of unparalleled beauty and brilliance, hailing from Buguma City in Rivers State.

Equally deserving of mention are my beloved parents: my disciplinarian father, the late Mr. Ogbererumiovwin Joseph Eruemuare, and my wonderful mother, Mrs. Agberia Eruemuare (née Baibor), a proud daughter of Obi-Ayagha in Ughelli South LGA.

Growing up, Ogbe-Udu was marked by peculiarities; swine roamed freely until their destructive tendencies led to their exile, attributed to witchcraft's dark touch. Dogs were banned due to a tragic incident involving a dog and a white man on a bicycle, while goats too faced exclusion for similar disturbances. To this day, animals roam on leashes in our vibrant community.

The haunting specter of witchcraft has woven itself into our history, with confessions of dark deeds echoing through our streets, cautionary tales of misfortune and folly.

Despite the challenges, Ogbe-Udu is not devoid of hope. Our community boasts a health care center, a magnificent town hall, and playgrounds buzzing with the laughter of children.

Memories are etched in the communal consciousness: the time when tensions with Okolo Waterside rose, with our youths chanting songs of war, soon diffused by the wisdom of our leaders and the intervention of our revered Agathy, whose resilience prevented tragedy. Our market, though not frequented daily, is a hub of exchange every fortnight, fostering connections among villagers.

Justice in Ogbe-Udu is resolute. Stealing results in a measured punishment, and violence carries a severe price. Development is arriving, but we can strive for even greater heights. In days past, the lack of foresight among youth led to untold burdens.

To all the men and women of Ogbe-Udu, I salute your relentless spirit and the foundations upon which our community stands.

Long live Ogbe-Udu!
Long live Udu!
Long live Delta State!
Long live Nigeria!

ai pastors

ChatGPT men of God

LIama self-acclaimed men of God

The rope God gave to sinners is very long, it's longer than Elon Musk's money

In the intricate web of faith and spirituality, threads of devotion, morality, and the human condition are intricately woven. Amidst this sacred landscape, whispers of dissonance echo – a contrast between the hallowed message of the cross and the clamorous gospel of prosperity.

While growing up, amidst the solemn cadences of daily masses and Sunday masses at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Okwagbe; St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Ogbe-Udu; St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Owhawha, I was imbued with the understanding that the message of the cross was supreme. Decent dressing enveloped us before, during, and after mass. The holy communion was highly reverend and revered. In those sanctified moments, even affronts were transcended in the pursuit of spiritual grace.

In contrast, the recent past has borne witness to disquieting shifts. I overheard colloquial utterances like "You dey ment, wetin dey worry you?" within the sacred precincts of God – a stark departure from erstwhile reverence. Music of all genres now resonates in the house of God. A contemporary Catholic reflection poignantly notes, "The GOSPEL of Prosperity seems to be more attractive than the message of the cross. But we should always remember there is no cross without a crown, and no crown without a cross."

These generational pastors often seem enthralled by the pursuit of wealth. The body of Christ is not their mission; the crucified Christ is peripheral to their agenda, invoked only when expedient. Scriptures are no longer their bedrock. Proclamations like "One of our members here got healed by me last night. Glory to God" blur the lines between human agency and divine power. "These AI pastors are becoming something else," diverging from traditional paths of spiritual devotion.

Most of "these ChatGPT men of God" are fixated on augmenting their "bank accounts, wallets and pockets." The welfare of their members is secondary. "These LIama self-acclaimed men of God are busy amassing wealth" under the aegis of the creator of the universe. Transgressions via "counseling" platforms besmirch the sanctity of their calling. Some desecrate God's house without remorse, exhibiting patterns of domestic violence and debauchery. "The rope God gave to sinners is very long, it's longer than Elon Musk's money" – a sobering reflection on divine mercy amidst human frailty.

In bygone days, such transgressions might have invoked dire consequences. Now, in "tarry-nights" or "crossover nights," some exploit members' gullibility. The obsequious addresses of some Gen Z wives – "My daddy, my G.O., my supreme commando" – reveal skewed dynamics, undermining respect for husbands.

In this spiritual landscape fraught with contradictions, the essence of faith risks dilution. The "gospel of prosperity" eclipses the "message of the cross" for some, yet the interplay of cross and crown endures as a spiritual paradox. Amidst critique, the quest for authentic spirituality persists. The Cross and the Crown: Navigating Shifts in Spiritual Discourse is all I made an attempt at.

Nigeria's Defining Moment: Will the Nation Rise to the Challenge or Succumb to the Weight of Its Problems?

The Weight of Priorities

In life, we all have different priorities. As for me, my priority is helping humanity. I believe that by making a positive difference in the lives of others, I can find true fulfillment. Recently, I came across a story that touched my heart. A governor had sponsored 100 students to study in a prestigious private university in Nigeria. However, the university announced that the scholarship would no longer cover 100% of their expenses. The students would have to fend for themselves, covering a significant portion of their tuition fees, buying their own food, and managing other necessities.

This news was particularly devastating for these students, as more than half of them come from low-income backgrounds. Their parents or guardians struggle to make ends meet, and the thought of paying substantial school fees is a daunting task. I recall my own struggles in university, working part-time jobs to support myself. I understand the weight of financial burdens and the impact it can have on one's academic journey.

As I reflect on these students' situation, I wish I could do more to help. I believe that with determination, resilience, and hard work, these students can overcome their challenges. It's not going to be easy, but they must stay focused and keep pushing forward.

The Power of Determination

In life, we all face challenges that seem insurmountable. But it's in these moments that we discover our inner strength. The students on scholarship must find a way to navigate their university life, and I have no doubt that they will rise to the challenge. They must be resourceful, determined, and focused on their goals.

A Message of Hope

To these students, I want to say that you are not alone. Many have walked this path before you, and many have succeeded. You too can succeed, despite the odds. Stay focused, stay determined, and know that better days are ahead. Your future is in your hands. As you navigate the challenges of university life, remember that it's just a phase. It will pass, and you will emerge stronger and more resilient.

Dropping My Pen

In the end, it's not about the material things we accumulate in life. It's about the impact we make on others. "As you journey through life, remember that your greatest achievement is someone's daily to-do-list. SPEAK UP 4685" Stay humble, stay grateful, and stay focused. This is not the end of life; it's just a stepping stone to greater opportunities.

SPEAK UP LITERARY AWARD (SULA)
September 2025

In an illustrious initiative borne of noble intent, Goodnews Andrew Eruemuare, the esteemed voice behind the evocative platform Speak Up Quotes, and also called Sir A-One, heralds the inception of the Speak Up Literary Award (SULA). Since its illustrious inception on May 1, 2020, Speak Up Quotes has emerged as a radiant beacon of inspiration, fostering a vibrant community of thinkers, writers, and change-makers. As we commemorate this monumental milestone, we are elated to unveil a monthly award program that seeks to laud extraordinary literary works reverberating with the profound values of justice, integrity, and humanity.

The theme for September 2025, the inaugural month of this prestigious award, resonates with a clarion call for societal transformation: END CORRUPTION! In our unwavering commitment to harness the transformative power of literature as a catalyst for positive change, this month's theme is meticulously dedicated to the eradication of corruption in all its insidious manifestations. The significance of this theme is further elaborated through the following sub-themes, each designed to provoke thought, stimulate dialogue, and inspire action:

1. Transparency in Governance: This imperative underscores the necessity of open governance and rigorous accountability within public office. The onus lies upon every leader to cultivate an environment where the corridors of power are illuminated by the light of transparency.

2. The Cost of Corruption: A sobering exploration of the multifaceted repercussions of corruption, this sub-theme elucidates its detrimental impact on economic development, societal welfare, and the intrinsic dignity of individuals. The insidious nature of corruption robs society of its potential and perpetuates cycles of poverty and disenfranchisement.

3.
