I have no wish to burst your bubble. But to all the aspiring pharmD and second rate intellectually bereft pharmacists on this thread who feel they are nothing without a doctor tag I am afraid u will forever remain nothing. U cannot be redeemed.

The NUC will have no choice but to do the right thing. The concession that was extracted in the dark has come to light and a lot of interested parties are going to weigh in this time.

Undergraduate PharmD is an abuse to the doctor tag. If u are a pharmacist who want to be called doctor, get a PHD or a post graduate pharmD. Everybody cannot be a doctor full stop.

A doctor tag cannot clean the rot and intellectual decay among so called pharmacists. The decay that has made them abandon what in other climes is a noble and respectable profession preferring to hire out certificates to illiterates for a fee so that drug stores may be called pharmacies.

I am unaware of any serious drug compounding company local or international that will depend on Nigerian pharmacists. They are brought from without.

Its a pity pharmacy no longer attract the best and brightest but only mediocres as I have seen on this thread. What a shame. Sadly you want to take that same mediocrity to a different profession when u are not fit enough to be pharmacists

A proffessor of pharmacy tries to remove the wool in their eye, but they believe he is doing that bc he doesnt want them to be called 'Dr'. An obvious result of low self esteem.

I just hope and pray that the crowd I have seen here is not a true reflection of today's pharmacists. Your language is poor and unbecoming, grammer is offensive and diction leaves much to be desired.

NUC should take responsibility for its indecision. It should be seen in its pronouncements to be above the murky waters of unprofessional trade union politics.

drered: You still don't get it.. Pharmacist IN HOSPITALS want to be more involved in patient-care. This isn't about titles or salary/financial rewards because pharmacy as a profession is as financially rewarding as medicine for people who know their way. The drug business is VERY REWARDING.. This is about the patient/end-users nd maximising healthcare or are they not the reason why we are in the medical line? The ill-informed and ignorant might see it as encroaching but then in more civil climes it is called team work. Besides with the upgrade, i'm assuming the areas this professions cover will be clearly stated to avoid friction. There have been avoidable deaths/morbidity/adverse drug reactions that might have been prevented with other members of the health care team more directly-involved in patient care.. I personally am a victim of an adverse drug reaction that has changed my life in certain ways.. I don't get what the whole fuss is about. And I personally don't see much changing cuz the problem isn't just with doctors now but pharmacists also. Pharmacists are docile and are hardly ever united.. PCN,PSN as far as I'm concerned haven't done much to push the profession forward. Smh

The resistance you are getting from Nigerians and the NUC even from the reverred Prof mentioned above is on account of the undeserved title. That is the unstated fact. PharmD can be declared min qualification requirement to practice pharmacy in Nigeria and it will be well received by all. But they cannot be regarded as doctors because they are not. They are not PHD pharmacy (those will be offended) and they are not doctors. Call them whatever. Architects who spend 6yrs in training are not called doctors why should pharmacy undergraduate program be so referred? Optometrists similarly went shopping around certain parts of the globe for justification and they came back and shot their program to 6yrs calling all optometry graduates doctors!! Its only a matter of time like I said bf physiotherapists, lad scientists and nurses follow suit.

Somebody within the NUC must have decided that this crazy obsession must stop. I doubt if the NMA is in anyway involved. If you have 100 doctors in this forum, you will have 100 different opinions. They are disorganized. It is wrong to think they masterminded this position of the NUC in anyway. People give them way too much credit than they are due.

He doesnt see how pharmD add value to pharmacy. How can a pharmacist abandon his drugs and go sit by a patient bedside. Do what might I ask? Give a superior opinion about the medications prescribed by a doctor and to which he has been properly advised?

It is really embarrassing when some people introduce themselves as Dr somebody and you find yourself asking 'Oh what field?' And he is telling you PharmD! What is our obsession with titles?

Do u know each time a doctor enters the theater he is putting his certificate on the line? Meanwhile pharmacists screw up prescriptions all the time and then replace a wrongly dispensed drug with a smile? No courts. No judge ever get to hear.

Okay, may your God help you. This criminal campaign by a band of pharmacists will not see the light of day. What Nigerians demand is an improvement in the quality of pharmacists trained in Nigeria. Stem the rot, incompetence and mediocrity

Let pharmacists be pharmacists and not quasi doctors. Understand pharmacognosy and pharmacology. Know how to dispense and possibly manufacture known formulations. If u want to excel then proceed with research and devt. That is what pharmacists do. Leave drug applications on patients to doctors who are trained for the purpose otherwise go to med school.

Not all doctors. A few doctors esp those with dinosaur mentality perhaps. Fortunately they are not many anymore. Their thinking and orientation have been overtaken by modernization and a need to uphold global best practice.

But the action of these glory/fortune-seeking pharmacists will be viewed as a threat and the dinosaurs will come back and probably begin to procreate.

Going to other well structured countries to import corrupt variants of pharmacy programs cannot help the practice of pharmacy in Nigeria. It will be abused as we have seen. Pharmacies are being turned to mini clinics with 'side labs' on account of 'pharmD' They are even transfusing blood without the slightest hint of diagnosis and treatment of transfusion reactions. This is creating a regulation nightmare in some places.

Real pharmacists should stand up and speak against these lazy treasure hunters in the interest of the profession.

These same people are also in the medical profession hoding on to CMD positions like its their birth right. They have no formal training to head hospitals but from the look of things they might want to take cue from our gold digging pharmacists to legitimize their hold by introducing one or two courses in hospital management.

It is not an easy cake which is why Nigerians want you to perfect the task rather than take on additional responsibilities. The next gsk may yet come from Nigeria.

The truth is real pharmacists are offended by the activities of these professional misfits who are in the minority but make the loudest noise. They take pride in their profession and they dont wqnt to be anyone else. Their publications are there for all to see.

Government has a duty to enforce the law esp in the private sector so that pharmacists can practice their profession fruitfully. Who knows? The next big drug discovery may come from Nigeria.

PharmD or pharmacy doctor is no answer to the rot, decay and the abysmally poor quality of pharmacists being churned out by the universities daily. Quality and standards is the solution and not mere titles however surreptitiously obtained. Nigeria is not in dire need of clinicians. There is enough even for export.

Presumably the govt is waiting for Nursing and radiograph doctors bf some form of order is brought in.

Everybody wants to be a doctor withour having to go through the stiff competition and rigors that medical school entails. The pharmacists, the optometrists also recently started a 6 yr program and are now called doctors doing all kinds of things including seting iv lines in phamacies and 'optometry clinics'. I wonder what the nurses, physiotherapists and radiographers are still waiting for. Truly competent unionists perhaps?.

Pharmacists and Optometrists who left school long bf this fraudulent scheme was contrived are brandishing complimentry cards appending 'Dr' to their names. We dont know who is a real doctor anymore n Nigeria.

Pharmacists have since abdicated their roles in the health sector to traders and are now looking for fertile grounds by corrupting an allied profession. Pharma practice in Nigeria has stagnated in Nigeria so badly. While breakthroughs are being reported in other countries their only achievement in Nigeria is being called doctors.

But the sad part of this is that if u want to be a doctor and still legitimately proceed with your parmaceutical dreams, U can. They are called clinical pharmacologists and the country has many of them. But these charlatans want a short quick route. Why not? Everything goes in Nigeria.

For those who are quick to draw a parallel with what is obtainable in the US and other countries, the Nigerian Pharm D is a fraud for many reasons I dont have the time to go into. Ghana started bc they saw Nigeria and many other countries with vocal trade unions will soon follow.

The Nigerian pharmacists have simply taken the fight against doctors to a whole new level and they consider this a victory in what is no more than licensed quackery. The consequence is a chaotic health sector where nothing appears to be what it seems.

Perhaps this wouldnt have happened if doctors out of selfishness have not tenaciously held on to leadership of the health sector in appointments to political and administrative positions! God help Nigeria.
