Salam alaeikun waramatullahi wabarakatu Before you dress up all red, carry that little present with red hearts on it, along with a red rose (maybe some red balloons too) and celebrate with your “valentine”, how about going through its origin? Can’t hurt, right? HOW IT STARTED: Valentine’s Day is a Roman festival, which continued to be celebrated until after the Romans became Christians. This festival became connected with the saint known as Valentine who was sentenced to death on 14 February 270 CE. If you look into its history, this day takes its roots from one of the most unprincipled and disreputable pagan festivals – Lupercalia. This festival was held by the Romans in the honor of their god of fertility. “Purification” rites were held and goats and dogs sacrificed and women were flogged with their hides, in the hope of “purifying” them and making them fertile. Another tradition suggests, February was also sacred to Juno Februata, the goddess of febris (“fever”) of love, and of women and marriage. On February 14, small pieces of paper, each of which had the name of a teenaged girl written on it, were put into a container. Teenaged boys would then choose one billet at random. The boy and the girl whose name was drawn would become a “couple,” joining in erotic games at feasts and parties celebrated throughout Rome. After the festival, they would remain sexual partners for the rest of the year. This custom was observed in the Roman Empire for centuries. Not the kind of romantic origin you expected, eh? In fact, quite disgusting! Many traditions suggest Mr. Valentine was actually looked down upon, for having multiple extra marital affairs. THE ISLAMIC VIEWPOINT: “If you want to destroy any nation without war, create adultery or nudity common in the young generation.” – Salahuddin Ayyubi Valentine’s Day is not an innocent day of celebrating love, rather it is promoting a culture which is resulting in increased divorce rates, broken homes and extra marital affairs. Founder and CEO of Avvo, Mark Britton, said: “Over the past two years we’ve seen an average increase of 40 percent in the number of requests for divorce lawyers around Valentine’s Day, compared to the previous six months. Furthermore, the number of questions about divorce has soared 36 per cent during that same time. Indeed, there’s definitely a major Valentine’s spike when it comes to divorce.” It is promoting loss of modesty among our youth at an alarming speed. People cheat on their spouses, all in the name of the day of “love”. Should real love result in divorces or heart breaks? In broken families? Is it worth being called love? Or should be it be called a day of uncontrolled lust or a day of breaking families, instead? If “be my Valentine” is said to a relationship outside marriage, then it’s downright immoral and if your excuse is to use it on your spouse, then my advice is: use such expressions 24/7 around your spouse and not just for a day. All this pomp and show in the name of a man who is titled as a Saint! SAINT VALENTINE! Are saints supposed to be like this? People might ask you to follow the fashion, even if it’s blatant disobedience to the Creator. They’ll ask you to do what the movies and the mags say: bid goodbye to morality. You are forced into thinking that you free. Are you really free? Or are you actually enslaved? We don’t want this version of freedom. Let’s be slaves not to the societal constructs, not to the mere ideas of men, not to the materialistic morality, but to Allah, our Creator, when you realize your position as a slave and His as the Master and when you stop taking orders from your nafs. It takes a real painful revolution within yourself. But once you go through it and overcome the evil within you, you are free. Because freedom is not in nudity or in chatting with cute girls – it is slavery. True freedom is only when you submit to your Creator. So people! Celebrating Valentine’s Day is not permissible for a number of reasons. Firstly: It is not permissible to celebrate these innovated festivals, because it is an innovation for which there is no basis in Islam. It comes under the heading of the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah , according to which the Prophet said: “Whoever introduces anything into this matter of ours that is not part of it will have it rejected.” [Bukhari and Muslim] Secondly: It involves imitating the kuffaar and copying them by venerating that which they venerate and respecting their festivals and rituals. By the way, “Hey, it’s just for fun” does not validate it. In the hadeeth it says: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 3512; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 2691. Thirdly: It results in evils and haraam things such as wasting time, singing, music, extravagance, unveiling, wanton display, men mixing with women, women appearing before men other than their mahrams, and promoting the “lust outside marriage” culture, which our religion looks down upon. Seek the many halal forms of love and halal forms of fun out there! “And come not near to unlawful sex. Verily, it is a Faahishah (i.e. anything that transgresses its limits: a great sin), and an evil way” [al-Isra’ 17:22] FINAL COMMENTS: The media and the billboards are just pumping you up, as part of their “Let’s Attract-More-Customers” plan. More discount deals, more decorations and delicious cup cakes – it’s called consumerism. So don’t be swept away with the tide. Know your values and stand up for them! Make sure you see the abhorrent nature of this day and save yourselves and your families from secretly becoming someone’s Valentine. APC, PDP take campaign to NLC conference February 10, 2015 by Fidelis Soriwei The two major political parties in the March 28 Presidential election, the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress besieged the venue of the 11th Delegate Conference of the Nigeria Labour Congress to canvass for votes in Abuja on Monday. The Presidential candidate of the APC, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), the President of Senate, Anyim Pius Anyim, who represented President Goodluck Jonathan at the event, the Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, the Supervising Minister of Labour and Productivity, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), were the key political figures from the two political parties who exploited the opportunity of the delegate conference to canvass for votes for their parties. The 11 delegates’ conference was organised with the theme “The working Class and the Challenges of National security, unity and democratic development.” Buhari said that security agencies in the country had not been able to tame the Boko Haram challenge in spite of the fact that the Federal Government had spent $32.88bn on defence in the past five years. He said that the Boko Haram Islamic sect had snowballed into a national menace after the August 2011 attack on the United Nations Building, Abuja, which resulted in the death of 25 persons with 60 others injured. The APC candidate said that there was need for change politically because the nation’s security situation had worsened. He added, “Our security situation in this country has never been so dire. Today, Nigerians have to endure, not just terrorist attacks in the North, but militancy in the Niger Delta, communal violence in the Middle Belt, cult wars in the South, and kidnappings, armed robberies, and common acts of thuggery throughout the country.” However, Anyim, said that he was under instruction not to make political statements at the conference because of the sensitive nature of the audience. He said that the President was of the opinion that the audience comprised workers from federal and state governments who could feature as ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the forthcoming elections. He gave the assurance that the Boko Haram insurgency would soon be brought under control. Anyim also conveyed the assurance of the President to the NLC delegates that the forthcoming election would be better than the 2011 general elections. In his comments, Oshiomhole, a former President of the NLC, had earlier condemned the continued importation of refined petroleum products into the country. He said that it was rather shameful that the nation’s refineries established by the military and were functional then, were not working under democracy. He attributed the decision to postpone the election to what he described as “government magic.” He also urged workers to insist that the new date of March 28, 2015 for the Presidential election was sacrosanct. However, the Supervising Minister of Labour and Productivity, Tanimu, who spoke immediately after Oshiomhole, urged Nigerians not to be swayed by lies and propaganda being peddled in political circles. He said that the Federal Government had been able to reduce the Boko Haram activities and confine them from 12 states to three. http://www.punchng.com/news/apc-pdp-take-campaign-to-nlc-conference/ |
THE LEGACY As time passed, her eldest son got well settled in U.A.E. He built a house in one of the most respected areas of Malleshwaram and quickly got his mother shifted off from the previous house into the brand new one. By Allah’s grace and mercy, all 8 children of hers got established comfortably in their lives, thanks to the immense hard work she put in. So, is this a happy ending? No! Her struggle never ended because Allah had placed a lot of struggles in order to test her patience and mold her more before she could reach Him . December 1995 She lay in the hospital bed trying to grasp for breath, her youngest son watching her helplessly while trying to figure out what he could do to get her back to normalcy. After a relentless struggle for a few hours, she returned to her Lord at the age of 63. Ruqaiyah’s story has a lot to be told and can’t be completed in a bunch of short series. There is much more to her struggles and how she dealt with it, which if we heard, would prevent us from asking “Why me?” for the major and sometims even minor struggles we encounter. Never did she whine or complain about any kind of situation she had to face. Rather, she always told Qadar’Allah with a smile on her face and moved ahead. She was a lady who won hearts of anyone and everyone she met. She is my hero who continuous to inspire my life. She is my grandmother with whom I hardly spent time with, however, she lives with me till today with her thoughts, morals and character. This was the legacy she left behind. Lastly, I would like to share a few points which I learned from her and I am pretty sure if you applied them, your life will definitely change for the better in shaa Allah. 1. NEVER GIVE UP: No matter how hard your life is and no matter how hard you think it will be, never ever lose hope in the mercy and power of Allah . 2.No matter how small or big your earning is, make sure you live and die a life with SELF-RESPECT, because if you can’t respect yourself, no one else ever will. 3. NEVER DEPEND on anyone apart from Allah , because no matter how dear or loved that individual is to you, you will always be bound to disappointments at some point of your life because no one is impeccable. “If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you? And in Allah (Alone) let believers put their trust.”- (Surah Aal-e-Imran: 160) 4. Be a STRONG INDIVIDUAL AND A STRONGER MUSLIM. It will build your personality in a way which you can’t even comprehend off, and what better way to start developing your character than by reading the Seerah of our beloved Prophet. 5. READING: Make it a habit to read. Surround yourself with good books, the ones that make you grow, not the ones that are known to give fantasies, making you waste time. Ultimately, you are what you read. 6. DEBT: Let this be a last resort in your life. Make sure that you keep you and your family away from debt or any sort of credits as it could possibly put you in destruction in this world and the hereafter. Obviously, you can resort to asking for financial help in dire circumstances, but make sure you stay within the limits of Quran and sunnah while doing so. 7. And finally, make sure you leave a LEGACY. It could be as simple as being kind to someone or smiling at people, touching someone’s heart or making their day. “But those who have feared their Lord – for them are chambers, above them chambers built high, beneath which rivers flow. [This is] the promise of Allah . Allah does not fail in [His] promise.”- (Surah Az-Zumar:20) I hope all of you have benefited from my grandmother’s legacy. If there is anything else you would like to share, please drop your thoughts in the comments section below. May Allah accept our efforts and grant us the highest level of Jannah! Ameen! Year 1964 Soon after the burial process, Ruqaiyyah started comprehending what to do with her children and herself. She was living in a house with a family who made her life a lot more worse and difficult, piling up the list of miseries she was already going through. She started her day with Fajr and they started theirs with music. Each family would compete with each other on whose radio would be the loudest. The ladies of the house used to sit and have chit-chat sessions in the evenings. Whenever Ruqaiyyah passed by them, they would giggle and pass comments, only to make her feel worse. Finally the eldest brother of Abu baker came up to her and told, “Abu baker has passed away and this has certainly grieved every one of us. However, fact of the matter is, we believe that you staying in this house with your 8 children makes no sense. Please move out anywhere you want as soon as possible.” Ruqaiyyah gave an impending dismayed look at him and then told in a firm tone, “I shall think about it”. The next day, she visited her parents who were also living in a deprived condition. She went there and told her parents what Abu baker’s elder brother had to say. Her parents, who were equally poor but had a very high self-esteem in the society, looked at their daughter and told, “Do not fear and stay strong. Abu baker has left for you and your children a room in the house, which you have full rights upon as any other family member according to the Shariah. So, go back and tell him that you will not leave or give up on your right and that they have no legal authority to ask you to do so.” She went back the same day and spoke to her brother-in-law with full confidence. She looked him in the eye and told firmly, “Indeed this is your house, but this is the house of Abu baker too and his children and his wife certainly have the right to live as much as your children and your wife. You demand us to be homeless but we are not going to throw away our rights. No one from my family is leaving this place, hope I’ve made myself clear”, and she walked away, making him stand there stunned by the strength of her words. As months passed by, Ruqaiyyah’s eldest son was given an opportunity by one of his maternal uncle to work in Dubai. Ruqaiyyah was extremely relieved as this could help their income and living. She encouraged her son to go off for work at a very young age of 15. She asked him to stay strong. She also asked him to ensure that he uses only halal sources of income and never delves into anything which could get him closer to haram or anything that would take him away from Allah . He obediently accepted his mother’s words and realized his responsibility as the eldest son. During this time, her in-laws would be extremely partial and mistreat her children, thinking they could make her leave the house if they treated her badly. Her daughters would get very annoyed and used to ask their mother, “Why don’t you answer back when they do that to you”? She would smile back at her children and reply, “I will let Allah reply back to them, we humans can only say a few words but when the justice of Allah comes down, there is no escape for the oppressor.” Their house used to celebrate grand parties and birthdays while the orphaned children would peep from their doors and watch the delicious food being served. They would come back to the room and plead with their mother, telling her that they want to eat too, but their mother would convince them by saying, “This rice water with pickle is the best of all the foods” and thereafter, the children would quietly eat it with heavy hearts. “I will let Allah reply back to them, we humans can only say a few words but when the justice of Allah comes down, there is no escape for the oppressor.” One day, her 4th son who was just 8 years old came to his mother and told, “Why don’t you borrow some money so we can have enjoyable food for a day at least”. His mother took him to the room where her other children were playing and told her children to listen to her very carefully. She said, “No matter where you go and what circumstance you find yourself in, if a time comes that you have to die starving or borrow money, then prefer death than debt as indeed Allah will never forgive the one who takes money and forgets to return it to its owner at its due time. Hence, always remember, we should stay away from such situations than to risk our hereafter.” “I realized when my mom was telling me this story, that 40 years back, my grandmother was one of the most wisest women who knew how she had to attain Jannah and she also knew that she shouldn’t compromise anything for the hereafter. Her words got engraved deeply in my heart and I knew once and for all that I wanted to strive in order to have that strength and firmness as she had as a Muslimah.” To be continued |
Part-2 YEAR 1946 Until.. One day, when she was discussing about higher studies after 10th grade with her parents, her elder brother Ibrahim suddenly barged into the room and told his parents in an enraged tone, “People are laughing at me, they are saying, “Your sister is going ahead of you! You did not go beyond 6th grade, and look at her, she is going beyond everyone’s imagination; she will certainly exceed everyone soon.” I can’t take this, you both need to stop it, you need to make her discontinue her studies, else I am never going back to work again”!!! Everyone were shocked and annoyed, but Ibrahim had become very adamant of not going back to work until she discontinued her studies. It was a very tough decision for Ruqaiyah’s parents but they had to make this one. Next day, mother went to Ruqaiyah and hesitantly placed her hands on her head while she was studying and asked her, “I want to talk to you”. Ruqaiyah got up immediately and made her mother sit on the chair on which she was sitting and sat down near her mother’s legs and asked with a smile, “Tell me Maa, what is it?”. Her mother’s eyes were moving timidly here and there. She was trying to speak those words which would shatter her daughter’s dreams. After a while, she looked at her daughter’s innocent face and said, “You are not going to study any further and it’s decided.” Ruqaiyah continued to look at her mother the same way as she was looking a few seconds ago, without any expression or words. She got up slowly, continuing to look at her mother the same way as before, and quickly moved out of the room. Her mother hurriedly went behind her to see what she was up to and saw her daughter’s eyes overflowing with tears, which didn’t stop for the next 2 to 3 days. She had become extremely weak and ultimately suffered an attack of typhoid, which got her parents troubled and worried for days. Her beautiful long locks of hair loved by everyone had started falling due to extreme poor health. All she could recall repeatedly were her sister’s words, “This world will not allow you Ruqaiyah, and you are still too young to know, come off the fantasy world”. Her dreams and ambitions were shattered But could she do anything? No! Her dreams and ambitions were shattered. It was not her fault. Her dreams had to die because of someone’s selfishness, someone from her own family. YEAR 1950 Ruqaiyah was 19 years old when she got married to one of the richest and well-known families of her town. Due to her beauty and character, she had attracted a large number of alliances, from which she was destined to marry Abu Baker. Abu Baker, a chivalrous and a well-mannered young boy, who was just 21 years old at the time of their marriage, was working for the Indian Military services. Living like any other happily married couple, they always enjoyed each others company and encouraged each other in goodness and piety. They were blessed with 7 beautiful children, 3 sons and 4 daughters within the span of 14 years of their marriage. Who would have known their happiness was so short lived…. YEAR 1964 It was just another day in Ramadan and Ruqaiyyah was busy doing dhikr and preparing for Iftar. Abu Baker entered the house panting. He was drenched in sweat and looked like he had run for miles of kilometers without taking a break. He sat on the chair. “Ruqaiyyah, get me water! Get me water!” asked Abu baker in a very shaky voice. She came hurriedly and asked him what had happened but he was in no position to explain anything, he just demanded water over and over again. She replied, “There’s just 1 hour for Iftar time, be a little patient and Allah will help you out”. He asked her again in a furious tone, “Get me water, I say!” Ruqaiyyah being obedient now, without speaking a word went and took a glass of water and handed over to Abu Baker. As soon as he drank the water, the glass slipped off from his hands and he sat there without any movement. Ruqaiyyah went near and asked him, “What happened”? But there was no reply and no sign of any movement. Yes! Abu baker had passed away. It was just 14 years into their marriage, Abu baker being as young as 34 and Ruqaiyyah, 32. She could have never believed that this Ramadan would change her life forever and force her to prepare for the heartless battles she would be fighting in an age where women enjoyed marriage and children. She already had 7 children and was expecting the 8th at the time of Abu baker’s death. She didn’t know what she had to do, where she would go and how she would survive as her eldest child was her 14 years old son. She didn’t expect her children to be left orphans at such a young age. Who knew destiny had so much in store for her from now To be continued… |
PART- 1 Year 1931 It was just another day for the people of Malleshwaram, (a small and bright city situated in the south western part of India) sunny and extremely humid, a climate which was usual for them. Being in a place that had tropical climate, the scorching heat was something they experienced regularly throughout the year. If there was any other weather except summer, it would be monsoons, which most of them awaited eagerly throughout the year. In this particularly usual day, there was an unusually beautiful baby born to a Muslim family living in the most modest part of the town, accepting the acceptance of their living and thanking Allah ( ) for all the things which He ( ) blessed them with, happily bringing up their children in the best possible way. Today, yet again, was the day where they welcomed another baby girl in their family. Ayesha exclaimed, “Finally I’ve got a companion, my beloved baby sister is here”. The younger brother sulked a bit hearing this, but his father cheered him up by saying, “Now, you have someone under you, whom you can finally play with and command to”, and they starting laughing looking at Ibrahim’s expression. Unlike today’s generation, Ayesha’s mom had delivered at home under the observance of other elder ladies in her family and neighbors. After the day of delivery, the next thing to be decided was the baby’s name. Everyone started giving their own opinions till the mother, who was silent for a long time, came up with a name and told, “Ruqaiyah, that will be my child’s name, Ruqaiyah.”, which meant charming/gentle/delicate. As soon as the father heard the name, he gave a silent nod of acceptance and smiled with pleasure…… Year 1941 One fine evening, both the sisters were sitting on their front door steps at tea-time, talking to each other about general things, until Ayesha asked Ruqaiyah, “Tell me, what do you want to do in your life?”, Ruqaiyah stopped sipping her tea and turned herself towards her sister completely. She looked at Ayesha with her audacious and expressive eyes and told her, ” I want to leave an impact as much as I can, I don’t guarantee the entire world but at least to the people I leave behind.” Ayesha looked back at her silently with an unmitigated expression. Ruqaiyah wanted to get some response and continued looking at her elder sister for an answer or probably some encouraging words. Ayesha continued sipping her tea, finished it and while getting up told, “This world will not allow you Ruqaiyah, you are still young now, come off the fantasy world”. Ruqaiyah heard her sister’s words and stayed back thinking about it all the time. “ I want to leave an impact as much as I can, I don’t guarantee the entire world but at least to the people I leave behind.” It was an annual program next day at school, and the students had to prepare something for the event. Ruqaiyah had prepared her part too and waited till she got a chance. The teacher finally called her saying, “We would like Ruqaiyyah Syed to start the program with few verses of Quran.” Ruqaiyah moved intrepidly towards the stage and took hold of the microphone steadily and started with Surah Yaseen. As she was reciting, the teachers and the students were enthralled with her voice and recitation. The principal was so captivated that after she completed her recitation, she invited Ruqaiyah over to her house for lunch as a token of appreciation. Such kind of acknowledgment was never given to any student or child in Malleshwaram. As time passed by, she moved ahead of everyone in her town in terms of studies, activities and character. Her parents were getting extremely overwhelmed with their daughter’s performance and ways till…… To be Continued… |
Everybody has, at some point of time in their lives, woken up in a state of sluggishness, laziness, weakness, fatigue, or felt like a dark cloud has come over their heads. Perhaps Shaitan visited you during your sleep in a dream or otherwise, perhaps you are ill or perhaps the ebb and flow of life has balanced the abundance of good feeling with some bad. But we, as active healthy Muslims, must take our affairs into our own hands with the knowledge and strength that Allah has blessed us with. Our bodies are a trust that Allah has bestowed us with, which we must take care of. We must also take our Prophet ﷺ (who was strong, powerful, capable, adaptive and elegant) as the guide whom Allah sent to remind us. The main difference is that Prophet ﷺ was taught directly by Allah through the angel Gabriel while we are blessed in a way that is indirect (through the Qur’an and his Sunnah which has been passed down through generations.) Let us start at the beginning of the day, as that is what generally makes us or breaks us. ‘Ubaidullah bin Mihsan Al-Ansari reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whosoever begins the day feeling family security and good health; and possessing provision for his day is as though he possessed the whole world.” [At- Tirmidhi]. 1) Aim to Wake Up Well Before Fajr Prayer The goal is to wake up with nothing to do except worship Allah . The opportunity for tahajjud and witr are best at the last third of the night when Allah has descended. To start the day with spiritual acts will give ones mind the most powerful benefit (as intellect is primarily a spiritual faculty). This will supercharge your day. In Arabic, we call concentration in prayer, khushu’ which is something we must constantly try to improve on: “We served ourselves in the company of Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We tended our camels by turn. One day, I had my turn to tend the camels, and I drove them in the afternoon. I found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressing the people. I heard him say: Anyone amongst you who performs ablution, and does it well, then he stands and offers two rak’ahs of prayer, concentrating on it with his heart and body, Paradise will be his lot by all means.” – Sunan Abi Dawud 169. Graded Sahih by Al-Albani. 2) Have a Healthy Breakfast Includes drinks like warm milk with honey, which are 2 strong remedies from the Sunnah, or in modern times, you can opt for a tea or coffee, which although not from the Sunnah since they were not around at that time, are still considered halal for us to imbibe in moderation. The more we follow the Sunnah, the more power one will have for the entire day. Squeezing fresh juices, eating dates, whole grain breads with fresh cheese, healthy cereals from oats or corn flakes (with minimal processing), are classic old-fashioned healthy varieties of breakfast that can be included in your diet. 3) Physical Exercise If you are going to remain physically inactive for long periods of time, your mind is not going to have access to various nutritional elements it needs in order to function well. The primary principle here is to not remain idle for long periods of time. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “Any action without the remembrance of God is either a diversion or heedlessness except four acts: Walking from target to target [during archery practice], training a horse, playing with one’s family, and learning to swim.” At Tabarani. So, these physical activities are not considered heedless as they are important to our daily lives. Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet ﷺ used to visit all his wives in one night and he had nine wives at that time. The Prophet ﷺ being a family man, remained active and did not neglect to give attention and affection to his family. He would do chores around the house and help his wives, not treating them like slaves but with the dignity and respect, which a believing woman deserves. So get up around the house, do your laundry, sweep the floor, cook your own food and stay on your feet even if it is for visiting your relatives or walking to the mosque. 4) Indulge in Exercises that Aid in Increased Mental Focus This is very important and often neglected. It varies from person to person and it depends on various factors. Sometimes, the brain needs to be started and revved up like an old engine. The Prophet ﷺ before revelation, would go to the Cave of Hira and meditate in his own way and was constantly pondering and thinking over the spiritual illnesses as well as social troubles of the society. Spending 20 minutes doing a jigsaw puzzle could be right for one person. While for others, writing in a diary or journal could be a viable option to consider. This is especially needed for a student of knowledge, because if one passively takes information, the mind may not be able to maintain its train of thought. Zirr bin Hubaish narrated: “I came to a man called Safwan bin ‘Assal and sat at his door. He came out and said: ‘What do you want?’ I said: ‘I am seeking knowledge.’ He said: ‘The angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge out of pleasure at what he is seeking.'” Sunan an-Nasa’i Vol. 1, Book 1, Hadith 158. Graded Hasan by Darussalam. Make this activity something that is within your knowledge already. Do not try to expound on a new brilliant idea you just came up with. Save that for later as you should never undertake “focus exercises” that is completely new for you (as you might be unable to complete it or might get stuck on it). This allows you to get the momentum building. After that momentum is at full speed, you can move on to more advanced things which will tax and challenge your mind on a different level (until your mind needs to sleep to reorganize and process all that was taken in.) Certainly, the best focusing exercises will revolve around learning the Qur’an. It was narrated that ‘Uthmaan bin ‘Affan said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘The most excellent of you is the one who learns the Qur’an and teaches it.'” Here are some examples: Every morning, write out flash cards with an Arabic letter or word from the Quran and its English translation or spelling with English letters (transliteration) on the opposite side. Or go through 100 of such cards and test yourself. Watch free online lectures about the Qur’an and Sunnah and take notes. The process of taking notes will make ones focus much greater. That’s correct. Focus more on the active process of taking notes rather than passive listening or watching. The differences would be very apparent! Turn your computer into a link to Allah with endless material for you to slowly take in; or as a notepad to record or organize things which benefit you in both worlds. Write out a verse or chapter from the Qur’an. Take those flash cards previously mentioned and sort them in alphabetical order or ask 10 of them to your children while they eat their breakfast and make it a family bonding experience even. Do not let Shaitan steal what you think is a bad day. Make it a success by giving it to Allah who has given you a limited number of days with which He will test you and give you an opportunity to worship Him while purifying yourself. So take full advantage of all of them by having habits, patterns and strategies reinforced and implemented to deal with the troubles, the pain, the challenges and the strife when it comes. Our world has become a place where there is more need for mental capacity than physical capacity due the sophistication of automation and machinery. So, let us adapt while staying firmly within the bounds of the Shariah. That is why these strategies for maintaining mental clarity, energy and focus will come in handy throughout our daily lives. The two major political parties’ caucuses of the House of Representatives, the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress, on Tuesday disagreed over the N30tn alleged to have either been “stolen” or “mismanaged” under the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan till date. A former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, made the allegation on Monday in a widely circulated article he wrote on the alleged mismanagement of the Nigerian economy under Jonathan’s watch. The House caucuses held opposing views on the matter in separate interviews with our correspondent. While the APC caucus demanded an immediate investigation into the allegation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the PDP caucus simply dismissed it as a “wild, baseless and unsubstantiated allegation.” Speaking on behalf of the APC, the House Minority Leader and caucus leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, said the magnitude of the amount involved should cause sleepless nights for any government. He noted that aside being a renowned economist, Soludo served as the governor of the CBN and was in a position to know the financial dealings of the Federal Government. “It is a common knowledge that our economy has been leaking profusely over the years due to mismanagement and outright theft. “However, no one could have imagined the magnitude and volume as suggested by Prof. Soludo. Now, because he is a former CBN governor and an internationally-acclaimed economist, he should know and be taken serious,” Gbajabiamila told our correspondent. He argued that, even if the money involved was N15tn or N20tn, it could still cripple any economy. The APC lawmaker from Lagos State spoke further, “Now, let us assume for argument sake that he embellished and exaggerated his N30tn figure. “Let us slash it by a 50 per cent margin of error to say N15tn or even N20tn, it still beats the imagination and shocks the system.” Calling on the EFCC to investigate the allegation, he added, “This will be the biggest case of economic and financial crime for which the EFCC was established to look into. “Ignoring this allegation makes everyone or authority in Nigeria that keeps quiet an accessory, after the fact and just as guilty if the crime is established.” However, Deputy House Majority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, stated that he was surprised to hear an economist of Soludo’s status make such an allegation. Ogor argued that the former CBN governor’s article appeared more like a product of “guess work and unsubstantiated figures” than anything that should be taken seriously. The lawmaker from Delta State also claimed that anybody with the intent of “running down a government could easily put figures together and make them appear so convincing.” He added that when such figures and allegations were subjected to investigation, “you will find out that that the person making all the noise becomes tongue-tied.” “Our laws stipulate clearly that he who makes allegations must be prepared to show proof. “Sometimes, some of these our so-called technocrats that have turned politicians overnight, are seeking relevance. “It is even more embarrassing coming from somebody like Soludo. “He should go the extra mile to provide all the documents or we should just ignore him and concentrate on good governance as we are already doing,” he stated. Ogor also dismissed any call to investigate the allegation, saying that Soludo’s article had no “basis at all.” He claimed that the House in particular would not consider such a move because there was no evidence before it suggesting that N30tn was either stolen or unaccounted for by the Jonathan administration. “We don’t probe unnecessary allegations. We have been carrying out our budget oversight on all government bodies. “There is nowhere we have this evidence. This is merely intended to divert attention and it should be quickly ignored,” he added. He said but for Soludo’s clarification that he was not looking for a job, he (Ogor) would have concluded that the former CBN governor urgently needed to catch the attention of Jonathan for a job. “If he needs a job, he should say so. There is nothing bad in admitting it. “But, he says it is not about job,” Ogor told The PUNCH on the telephone. http://www.punchng.com/news/pdp-apc-reps-clash-over-alleged-stolen-n30tn/ |

●๋ If Buhari was pictured attending a mosque, and it was reported that the Imam said 'he would open the gates to hell upon those who oppose Buhari', and Buhari sat there and said nothing, what do you think many people would be saying today? ●๋ If Buhari was pictured going to different mosques and kneeling before Imams, as part of his campaign, what do we think the comments would be? ●๋ If Buhari was pictured going on pilgrimage to Mecca, surrounded by a retinue of fawning Imams, what would the response be from Nigerians? ●๋ If Buhari invited senior Imams from across the country to a meeting with him, to discuss the elections and his campaign strategy, what would the Nigerian people think? ●๋ If Any Imam is manipulated on money for arms deal and it is said Buhari gave him contract 2 import arms 2 fight boko haram since its a northern problem, what do u think Nigerian's response will be? ●๋ GEJ has done all of the above, and we are told he has a right to do so as a committed christian. Buhari has done none of the above yet he is called a religious fundamentalist with a plan to turn Nigeria into an Islamic nation. ●๋ Please examine the facts so we can honestly decide who is acting like the real religious fundamentalist? Who is using religious faith as a political ploy to get votes? ●No pastor, Bishop, GO, Reverend Father, Imam etc is GOD. ●They do NOT have the right to tell you who to vote for. ●Go out there and support the candidate of your choice. ●Make your choice based upon who will give you and your children a better life and a better Nigeria. I have chosen General Muhammadu Buhari and Pastor Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and i appeal to you to consider them as your choice. God bless you and have a lovely weekend |
The four year old was throwing a terrible tantrum. All he wanted was to go out on his bike and ride on the busy street without being escorted by anyone. Amidst his crying and shouting, the poor mother tried to explain, “I love that you have fun, and I don’t wish to make you cry, but to go alone, you have to wait. When you are old enough I will ask you to go by yourself and bring me the groceries. The cars out there are so fast dear, you can hurt yourself…!” And while I was saying this, I realized I had found an answer. I had stopped my son from something based on the little knowledge and experience I had as a grownup. I had stopped him because I loved him and did not want him to get hurt. When we are newbies to being practicing Muslims, we often wonder why Allah has ordered us to keep away from certain things; and made certain things Haram. Moreover, many a times, things do not go the way we plan, we come across problems and our duas remain unanswered. We wonder why (even though we know that Allah is the All-Hearing and Ever-Beneficent.) Al-Hakeem: What Does it Mean? Allah is the All-Knowing, Most-Wise and loves us more than we ourselves do, because He is Al- Wadood. How can He legislate anything that is harmful for us? Behind every command and every forbidden deed, there is a hidden wisdom that we may not understand. He has explained in the Quran: “But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.” 1 Scholars explain the meaning of Al- Hakeem as, ‘He is the one who is decisive, precise, and the one who perfects matters. It is taken from “hikmah” which is to put something in its proper place. Hence, He, the Sublime, is the Judge (Haakim) between His servants, who has hikmah in both his creation (i.e. His act of creation) and His command. He did not create anything with no purpose, out of mere play, and nor did He command anything except that which is of pure benefit, goodness.’ (Sharh Aqeedah Wasatiyyah) 2 It is thus in our best interest that we follow the guidance of Allah , whether we like it or not. How can we be so confident about our knowledge, find fault in the commands of Allah and pick and choose from them, like a buffet? He is the one who is decisive, precise, and the one who perfects matters. It is taken from “hikmah” which is to put something in its proper place. The Wisdom in Allah’s Plans Whatever Allah has ordained: casualty, pain, relief or pleasure, has a reason behind it. We are similar to a child, we are a miniature creation residing in a ball smaller than the size of a pea in the whole wide universe, so how can we comprehend? Our sight does not even reach the room next to our wall. Our knowledge is limited; we know only what Allah wants us to know. Allah says in the greatest ayah of Quran: “He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills.” 3 Once we accept being a slave to Allah , submit to Him, and start walking on the path of His pleasure, we begin to understand the wisdom behind certain commands. For e.g, the benefits of Hijab are well understood after adopting it and the benefits of not listening to music are uncovered when we stop listening to it. In times of distress, if we put our trust in Allah , have faith in His knowledge and stay patient, with the passage of time, we gain perspective on how what we went through was beneficial for us, and what goodness came out from it. After realizing the knowledge and wisdom of our Creator and His love for us, why not surrender willingly to His will like Ibrahim ? Let us put our trust in Allah , gain knowledge about what He likes and dislikes and tread the straight path with perseverance. For achieving success in both worlds, let us give ourselves into the protection of Al-Hakeem with our heart and soul; there is no protection better than His! “Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.” 4 1. Jannah, our ultimate abode, has been described in various places in the Qur’an; its pleasure, inhabitants and mind-blowing landscapes. A great number of verses in the Qur’an and ahadith illustrate that Jannah is entitled to those who are successful. Brothers and sisters, every time you read the verses and ahadith which depict the reward for those who are successful, don’t you get that burning desire to be amongst them? To be with those whom Allah is pleased with? This hadith describes the traits of successful people, traits which we should strive to attain daily: ‘Amr b. al-‘As reported Allah’s Messenger as saying: “He Is successful who has accepted Islam, who has been provided with sufficient for his want and been made contented by Allah with what He has given him.” 1 It is a great misconception of our time that people pair success with the number of materialistic goods a person has. Success is not about accumulating products that will never give fulfillment or satisfaction; rather it is a combination of a few characteristics which instill happiness and contentment from within. 1. The Gift of Islam: Success is not about accumulating products that will never give fulfillment or satisfaction; rather it is a combination of a few characteristics which instill happiness and contentment from within. It doesn’t matter if one has gained worldly wealth or is known for superior knowledge and expertise because in the sight of Allah , this is not success. Embracing Islam raises a person’s status and allows them to be successful. Therefore, we should strive to be good Muslims and not just Muslims by name in order to please Allah so we could enter Paradise, in sha Allah. 2. Sufficient Provision: It is not about having valleys of gold or mountains of estates as these are but worldly pleasures; it is about having enough to sustain life. The word ‘sufficient’ suggests adequate or enough provision, that which will enable us to carry on with our daily tasks without any difficulty. But why is this so important, you may ask. It is because having more than what’s necessary can lead to distraction and diversion from our main objective which is to reach Jannatul Firdous. Our smartphones, x-boxes and surplus money cause us to be indulged in this life and they intensify our love for it, hence, we forget that we need to be working for our akhira (hereafter). Our precious time should not be dedicated to such trivial, useless matters; rather we should manage our time wisely so that we may gain as great of a reward as is possible! Sufficient provision allows us to focus on our main goal without distractions, as that would be our means to success. This dunya should not hold us back from progressing to Jannah. It is not about having valleys of gold or mountains of estates as these are but worldly pleasures; it is about having enough to sustain life. Prophet Mohammed used to ask Allah for sufficient provision because he knew that having a surplus is of no benefit, thus, we should follow his example in that: This dunya should not hold us back from progressing to Jannah. Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger as saying: “O Allah, make the provision of Muhammad’s family sufficient just to sustain life.” 2 3. Contentment Regardless of how much a person owns, they will never attain happiness and true peace of mind until they are content with what Allah has decreed for them. This is because we are unfortunately living in a world where the majority of people are only concerned about accumulating wealth and property, to the extent that others start feeling self-conscious about their own position, and the never-ending comparison and competition leads to one never being satisfied. This is an *incorrect* approach to success. Our objective in this life is not to acquire more than others, rather it is to please Allah . Allah says in the Noble Qur’an: Our objective in this life is not to acquire more than others, rather it is to please Allah . “Competition in [worldly] increase diverts you” 3 Moreover, Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said: “Richness is not having many possessions, but richness is being content with oneself.” 4 This is also linked to the attitude of gratitude. We have to appreciate everything that Allah wills for us to happen will happen, and we have to thank Him for both the blessings and tribulations as they are all a test from Him . They strengthen our faith and we will eventually be rewarded in the hereafter. This is the true formula for contentment; to accept and appreciate Allah’s bounties upon us. Allah says: “And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah , you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.” 5 Are these reminders not enough to warn us and wake us up from our heedlessness? Tip: In the matters of this life, always look below you (those who have less) and you will be more grateful and content In the matters of the akhira (hereafter), always look above you (those who have worked harder than you) so that you will strive harder to attain Allah’s pleasure. After reading and understanding this hadith, it becomes obligatory upon us to implement its teachings in our lives. Become a true Muslim, have sufficient provision and be content with what Allah has blessed you with because it is definitely for the best. May Allah instill contentment within our hearts and make us successful in both worlds.
