Source Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates says his foundation is committing more than $50 million for the fight against polio in Nigeria. The American businessman was in Nigeria to promote his campaign against the crippling disease. The Seattle-based Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, created by the wealthy U.S. businessman and his wife, says it has concluded a $25 million agreement with the World Bank to support the purchase of more than 100 million doses of oral polio vaccines in Nigeria. Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, Mr. Gates said there is a renewed commitment and energy around the world to stop polio, a disease that inflicts severe disability. "The foundation is committed to this fight. We are spending quite a bit worldwide. We have some of that particularly targeted for Nigeria, over $50 million," said Gates. "Just in the last day, there was an announcement the arrangement where we provided $25 million to the World Bank has gone through. So that additional money will buy over 100 million vaccines over the next three years. So a lot of good news in terms of commitment and energy." While in Nigeria, Mr. Gates toured some of the most polio-endemic regions and observed efforts of vaccination teams. He also met with government officials, mothers, traditional birth attendants and Muslim women's groups. He expressed satisfaction with Nigeria's efforts to eradicate the debilitating disease. "The focus of my visit here was the polio eradication," he said. "And, I came to learn and I came to express how important this work is. And, I can says with strong conviction that this has been a very successful trip - in fact, far more successful than I would have expected." The Gates Foundation has committed more than $700 million to polio eradication efforts, worldwide. An international effort has cut polio cases in Nigeriaby 99 percent in 10 years - a drop of more than 350,000 cases in 1998 to about 1,600 in 2008. Polio is a virus that attacks the nervous system and can cause paralysis, difficulty breathing and sometimes death. It mainly infects children. The virus responsible for polio has been eliminated, around the world, except for Afghanistan, Nigeria, India and Pakistan. |

http://smallpickin..com/2008/10/what-to-do-during-recession.html So there’s a ton of talk recently that we’re moving towards a Recession. That’s right… a Recession! Isn’t that horrible? Well, sort of, but what exactly is a recession? A recession, by definition, is when the GDP declines for two or more consecutive quarters; but how does that really affect you? In reality, it’s a period of economic slowdown that is marked with companies earning less, paying less, and generally things in life are a little less prosperous. So, what should you do to prepare yourself if a recession, specifically a prolonged recession, hits? It’s actually quite simple, the biggest fear you have and the biggest thing you should prepare for is the possibility that you could lose your job. In a recession, companies often scale back operations as sales lag and when that happens employees are often one of the things to hit the chopping block. To prepare for this, keep your ear to the ground and make sure that in the event that you are let go, the first you hear of it shouldn’t be the moment after your boss calls you to his office to deliver the bad news. The second part of preparation is to pull back your spending and boost your emergency fund. What? Don’t have one? Start one immediately! That’s what you will be to lean on as your income because you won’t be earning money if you’re unemployed. Now, preparing for the worst is always a good idea but the worst may never happen. In recent memory, recessions haven’t been all that bad for most Americans so the doomsday scenario isn’t all that likely. What’s more likely is that raises won’t be as big and promotions won’t be as plentiful, which is fine because it’s better than being fired. So, if the only real tip is to pad an emergency fund, what’s the big deal? The big deal is that you need to begin planning for it now. If you wait until it hits the cover of Time or the New York Times, it is already too late. How can you pad the emergency fund now? If you’re contributing more than your employer match in your 401k, consider pulling back so you can put that towards savings. If you’re making large payments on your car note, consider downsizing your car and getting into something you can handle better. Some things are easier than others (adjusting 401k contributions is easier than changing cars) but ultimately you want to reduce your spending to pad that fund. Whether or not a recession does hit, having a nice fat emergency fund is certainly something valuable in any economic situation (one can lose their job during a period of economic prosperity!).

Source EMMANUEL AKINWUMI, Senior Correspondent Abuja — Cyber spammers, otherwise called Yahoo boys, make an annual income of N10 billion in Nigeria, of which the banking sector is said to be worst hit, losing about N7.8 billion to the scourge. The various types of rampant cyber corrupt practices in the banking sector through which the banks lose huge sums of money include on-line financial fraud, identity theft, system penetration by outsiders, data and network sabotage and denial of service attacks. Globally, the economic crime is costing the world economy sums in the region of over $500 billion annually. The high rate of the crime in Nigeria has, however, been attributed to the lack of necessary legislation to deal with cybercrime. The Chief Executive Officer of Global Network for Cyber Solution, a non-government and non-profit organization, Segun Olugbile made the disclosure in Abuja. According to him, statistics show that there has been a significant increase in the figures over the past 30 years, adding that in 1970 the amount lost was approximately $5 billion, and rose to about $20 billion in 1980 and reached approximately $100 billion in 1990. He lamented that Nigeria with the largest population of black people in the world does not have any reliable law to deal with cyber crime, but noted that the meeting of the organization held recently in Abuja after which a communiqué was released has proffered solutions to the problem. According to him, part of the recommendations was that government should declare cyber crime and cyber security as a national emergency with conscious political will and special budgetary resources to effectively engage the challenges presented by its impact. The meeting also wants the government to sponsor numerous bills and enact Acts to deal with the excesses of the pandemic. Also, it called for the establishment of a national institute for cyberspace infrastructure protection, constitute a national standing committee on cyber crime and cyber security, among others. Olugbile stated that there were reliable case studies to show that an attack on a national infrastructure “could by virtue of its catastrophic consequences, completely paralyze the machinery of Government.
