Culture › What The Average American Will Look Like In 2050 - National Geographic by phantom(op): 2:32pm On Dec 16, 2013
According to Nat Geo, This Is What The Average American Will Look Like in 2050

What does the average American look like? As time goes on, the answer to that question is becoming more and more complicated.

The country is living up to its melting pot reputation as American faces become less homogenous and more diverse, a phenomenon that renowned photographer and portrait artist Martin Schoeller captured for the October 125th anniversary issue of National Geographic magazine.

The images, which are coupled with the individual’s “self ID” and the box he or she checked to indicate race as specified on the 2000 and 2010 census, are a striking reminder of Americans’ complex cultural and racial origins.

The 2000 U.S. Census presented the question of race differently, allowing respondents the option of selecting more than one racial category, with nearly 7 million Americans identifying as members of two or more races. The 2010 census included changes to more clearly distinguish Hispanic ethnicity as not being a race, with data revealing that whites would no longer be the majority in the country by 2043.

Schoeller’s photographs capture “the changing face of America,” a trend that is no doubt picking up speed with the increase of both interracial marriages and the births of biracial babies. The images also challenge traditional ideas of identity, providing evidence for the fluidity of racial and ethnic classification, which is explored more deeply in the magazine:

On playgrounds and college campuses, you’ll find such homespun terms as Blackanese, Filatino, Chicanese, and Korgentinian. When Joshua Ahsoak, 34, attended college, his heritage of Inupiat (Eskimo) and midwestern Jewish earned him the moniker Juskimo, a term he still uses to describe himself (a practicing Jew who breaks kosher dietary laws not for bacon but for walrus and seal meat).Tracey Williams Bautista says her seven-year-old son, Yoel Chac Bautista, identifies himself as black when he’s with her, his African-American parent. When he’s with his father, he’ll say Mexican. “We call him a Blaxican,” she jokes, and says she and her husband are raising him in a home where Martin Luther King, Jr., is displayed next to Frida Kahlo.

Take a look at the issue cover and some of the images featured below:

jmichael: Anoda product of same sex marriage has stepped into d fray. D brain cells of dese pple don't develop evenly.
MBBS is not and can never be equal to PhD
Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, or in Latin: Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae (abbreviated in various ways, viz. MBBS or MBChB, MB BS, MB BChir, BM BCh, MB BCh, MB ChB, BM BS, BM, BMed etc.), are the two first professional undergraduate degrees awarded upon graduation from medical school in medicine and surgery by universities in various countries that follow the tradition of the United Kingdom. The naming suggests that they are two separate degrees; however, in practice, they are usually treated as one and awarded together. In countries that follow the tradition of the United States, the degree is awarded as M.D. or D.O., which is a professional doctorate degree.[1]

Doctor, as a title, originates from the Latin word of the same spelling and meaning.[1] The word is originally an agentive noun of the Latin verb docēre [dɔˈkeːrɛ] 'to teach'. It has been used as an honored academic title for over a millennium in Europe, where it dates back to the rise of the first universities. This use spread to the Americas, former European colonies, and is now prevalent in most of the world. Contracted "Dr" or "Dr.", it is used as a designation for a person who has obtained a doctorate-level degree. Doctorates may be research doctorates or professional doctorates. When addressing several people, each of whom holds a doctoral title, one may use the plural contraction "Drs" (or "Drs." in American English) – or in some languages (for example, German) "Dres." may be used – for example, instead of Dr Miller and Dr Rubinstein: Drs Miller and Rubinstein. When referring to relatives with the same surname the form "The Doctors Smith" can be used. The abbreviation Drs. can also mean doctorandus, a Dutch academic title.

chiketee: How many of you foolish ppl have ever seen a doctor and decided to reduce the price of ur services? Can the doctor drive into a filling station and get fuel for free, even if he/ she falls I'll and goes to a hospital, would they get free treatment, how many of u have bought a car and sowed into ur doctors life or pay his kids school fees?. So where is all this trash about philanthropy coming from. Ignorance and just plain jealousy. Health care in the United States is one of the most expensive in the world. That's why the government funds it. If you don't have health insurance no one is gonna touch you. Rather than task ur government to improve on health care and be accountable u r all here talking crap.

Samgreguc: u must be high on cheap drugs.
Do you know what the health sector mean? If u mst knw, it doesn't mean hospital.
The Pharmacist can head the hospital with just a little admin. Course(if at all necessary).
.
On the consultant issue, what is the meaning of consultant? Med. Doctor? U beta go check ur "words and meanings(dictionary)"
on the first point, i agree completely with you.anyone can head the hospital with a course in administration.i meant the doctors head the health team as regards management of patients.it must be respected otherwise i as a doctor can say a wound must be opened only after five days and a nurse who feels we are all equal would decide otherwise and say the wound should be opened after two weeks.as regards the second issue, who is a consultant? A consultant is the go- to guy or expert in a particular area.because of the different areas in medicine, it became imperative that doctors had to choose specific areas to specialise in post mbbs.after undergoing extra training in a particular field and passing the required exams, you become an expert or consultant in that field.people CONSULT you for help in that particular area.now bros please tell me what extra training nurses and other health workers have under gone in their profession to warrant being called consultants? Look this whole thing to them is a competition.its all about them trying to rub shoulders with the doctor.qed.dont be hoodwinked.

you think people fly to india because the doctors here are subpar? In the US, UK, GERMANY, SPAIN, SOUTH AFRICA its still nigerian doctors who practice there with their basic nigerian medical degree o! The doctors are not the problem in this country.your leaders are. On the contrary doctors are the constant value in this equation.the variables are losing value.i wish nigerians can see.the doctors are NOT the problem! Your leaders are.but as usual paid PDP hacks are trying to make this whole thing about politics.

my teaching hospital has only ONE functional ultraround machine as i type this.i use that machine and scan up to 60 people everyday.we even have to turn back some people because if i have to use that machine to scan everyone that comes, i would be there till 11 at night.one machine! The mri machine in the same hospital is 0.2 tesla (this value indicates the strenght of the magnet in it and the quality of images you get).abroad they use more than 7 tesla machines.see the difference! How much is an mri machine? About 300million naira.what is this amount to the nigerian govt.cant they afford to put at least two of such machines in EACH teaching hospital? Yet nigerians sit in their houses and wonder why people fly to india.

tuoyoojo: I wonder y dis people wud continue to beef doctors saying that d profession is humanitarian. Who paid their school fess and bought books for them when they were in med sch. Who went thru all d hardship with them.if you think doctors r selfish, then go to med school become a doctor and give free humanitarian services.
If the other sectors of those providing essential service think that they can cope with poor funding, then by all means let them continue. For us, enuf is enuf
dont mind them.abroad, especially the US, STUDENTS take loans to go through med school.its expensive and even in nigeria no other student spends more than the medical student .fact! The only students that come close are the pharmacy students.we are not Gods and neither are we asking to be treated like Gods but we should get our due.simple.

Let's be sincere to eachoda, do u want us to believe dat d reason for d strike is coz dia r no MRI or CT scanners?

Mind u, I'm nt an outsider
they see doctors as greedy because the doctor insists on the right thing that should be done.the doctor heads the health team ANYWHERE in the world but the nurses and pharmacists would have none of it.why do you think they want to become consultants like doctors? Answer me then i ll take this debate up a notch.

how many doctors have private clinics? Do you know that 70 to 80% doctor who own private clinics DO NOT work for government? Infact many of them were pushed to open private clinics BECAUSE there were no jobs abinitio from government.

revolt: another retrogressive reply. gej and Co are temporary, the damage by a single strike is permanent.

a fight against the politicians is futile, Cos they're not affected. hope you see how daft your post seemed.
what of those who have died because that road didnt get built? What of those who have died because our politicians have eaten the money for an mri machine? What of those who have died because no police van was available to get to the scene of a robbery?what of those who have died out of fuel explosions when trying to start a generator?these deaths are temporary abi?

revolt: truth be told, these ASUU nma etc are greedy people.
if their strike would affect, the aristocrats, I'd understand.
lecturers have kept our children at home for 6months, not minding they're destroying phrase future generation, if they'd experienced these sort of strikes during their school days, I'm sure most of them wouldnt be lecturers. now these doctors have private hospitals,(which is the sole reason our medical sector is camatose ), they'd prefer to nurture these capitalist ventures to the detriment of the govt hospitals. I've read somewhere that not everybody with good grades in US , can study medicine, Cos they go through a series of psychological tests, to know if they're psychological built for medical profession. medicine isn't capitalism or profit making, it's philanthropy. irrespective of the fact that renumeration could Foster motivation, this discipline isn't a profit venture, same with education.
it's immoral and irresponsible for doctors to say they're not working Cos they want a raise. so let the people die.
so in a conflict situation, these guys can't operate, ie war or crises, they'd probably be asking for raise then.

I've come to realise why the blackman never invents or improves on anything, his values are warped.
These doctors even with their good paypackages hardly research or improve in medical practices, (if not explain to me why people travel to poor India to get better services @ far Cheaper rates). All they want is money, money.

Beastly human beings
you must be stoned! Do you know what an mri machine is?do you know what a ct scan machine is? Do you know what a defibrillator is? Please go round the nation and find out how many of these machines are in government hospitals.i work with radiation in my department.do you know how much my hazard allowance is? 5000 naira.no jokes and it is the same for other doctors including those who handle hiv/hepatitis infected blood in the labs.bros what manner of wickedness is that? Am i not a human being like you? Wont my kids go to school? Wont i and my family eat? Do i send my kids to substandard schools because i am a Doctor? If i didnt go to school at all and earning what i am earning i wouldnt mind.but i went to school to get a highly specialist training and are you are asking me to be charitable.do you know that health care is expensive anywhere in the world and serious governments fund it? What was the issue that led to the recent us govt shutdown? I dont have a private clinic and there are many like me so what is this issue about private clinics? My brother please dont talk about what you dont know.

Akpabio inherited a glorified LGA In Uyo And transformed it into an enviable upcoming city that is the pride of all Nigerians, except Biased ones like you and your paymasters.

Amaechi Inherited Port harcourt the Oil and gas capital of Africa, one of the most established cities in Nigeria and turned it into a dump, with abandoned projects littering the state, and bad roads everywhere. If Amaechi used helicopter to capture images of PH the only thing that will be captured, are the bad roads and decay that litter the city, which he has failed to fix in six years of stewardship.
The only achievement that Amaechi has to show for his stewardship are the schools, healthcare centers that he built which were all done in his first term.

Come back and talk about Amaechi when he completes a single project in his second term besides fighting women. And by the way stop brandishing estates built and funded by Private investors (First bank) As Amaechi's Achievment.
