Nairaland / General / Allegations Against OSSAP-SDGS Hits Brick Wall As Police Drags Writer by phawaaz: 1:47pm On May 06
The Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals has described recent allegations by a media organization concerning a contract award as mischievous, malicious and frivolous; all in a bid to get traffic to their website and earn advertisement revenue.

OSSAP-SDGS says it is aware of an attempt by some disgruntled element within the media space to blackmail the office's good name, but it remains focused on people-oriented programs.

The office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs confirmed that the matter was reported to the authorities so that the writer could have his day in court.

The office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs Maintains that the journalist should provide proof of the allegation in court where proofs are tendered and checked and not soil the hard-earned reputation of the office, its official, and projects, all in a bid to generate traffic to their website and advertisement revenue for its website.

The statement by OSSAP-SDGS is reprinted below.

"We take the accusations with the seriousness they deserve and set the record straight as follows."

" Recently, news circulated on social media stating that the office awarded N141.1 million to a restaurant in Abuja a few weeks before the expiration of the Buhari regime. We vehemently reject the claims. Indeed, the statements are not only misleading but malicious. They attempt to soil our office's unwavering integrity."

"The information in the publications is false from the onset. The intentions behind the assertions are malicious individuals trying to ruin the image of the high office. OSSAP-SDGs has been transparent in its operations and project implementation processes, including supporting the construction of the Skills Acquisition Centre and a Block of Classrooms in Lagos State and many similar projects across the country. Therefore, the assertion that our project was sponsored by a restaurant is false and baseless."

"Our projects are done by professionals in the field of construction and engineering, where such professionals are contracted competitively, following the set rules and standards. Therefore, the statement purporting that our project was being done within a restaurant is malicious and should be ignored completely. Moreover, the project was never redirected from Ajeromi; it was only relocated for logistical reasons to facilitate completion in stipulated times. The fact that the facility has been completed and commissioned confirms efficient and successful service to people. The statement is also untrue because our procurement department follows every procurement law."

"Therefore, the allegations are baseless. We assure the concerned parties that the monies used in the project were appropriately utilized. We are working tirelessly to achieve more goals and urge the general public to ignore the allegations and continue working closely"

The world is experiencing a global housing crisis. About 1.6 billion people live in substandard housing and 100 million are homeless. These people are increasingly urban residents, and every week more than a million people are born in, or move to, cities in the developing world.
Nigeria's housing crisis is no secret. With a population of over 200 million people, the demand for housing has far outstripped the supply. Shelter Origins, a real estate company based in Nigeria, is working to bridge the gap by providing affordable homes to Nigerians across the country.

Shelter Origins is a non Governmental Organisation (NGO) with its head office in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It was founded in 2010 after its parent body, Habitat for Humanity pulled out of Nigeria and has since been independent. They are a Christian Organisation that provides decent, safe, sanitary, and affordable houses in Nigeria for the benefit of less privileged persons; irrespective of their religion. They deliver these houses through the use of revolving fund, donations in kind, cash, and land.

“We are looking for partnerships across Nigeria and we really would like to help reduce the housing deficit in Nigeria” - Said Mrs Toki Mabogunje. Shelter Origins have had quality partnerships in the past. They have partnered with organizations like the MTN foundation, Cisco Internation U.S.A and Habitat International U.S.A.

Investing in real estate is one of the most reliable ways to build wealth, and these affordable homes offer a smart investment opportunity for Nigerians looking to secure their financial future. Their team of experts will guide you through the process and provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision.

"Our commitment to quality and affordability has not gone unnoticed," said a spokesperson for Shelter Origins. "We're proud to be making a difference in the lives of Nigerians across the country by providing affordable homes and flexible payment plans that make it easier for people to own a home and build equity. Our focus on community building ensures that our residents have a decent quality of life."

Properties / Are There Affordable Houses For Sale In Abuja? by phawaaz: 12:11pm On Mar 24, 2023
The affordability of real estate in Abuja has been a pressing issue for many years. Despite the city’s growth and development, owning a home or renting a property can be expensive, with prices soaring beyond the reach of many Nigerians. This has created a significant gap between those who can afford real estate and those who cannot

The high cost of real estate in Abuja is attributed to several factors, including the high demand for properties, the limited land space, and the cost of construction materials. As a result, many Nigerians have been priced out of the real estate market, and finding affordable housing has become increasingly challenging.

The lack of affordable housing has several consequences, including a rise in homelessness, overcrowding, and the proliferation of slums. It also affects the country’s economic development, as it limits the ability of young people to own homes and start families.

However, a few real estate firms are bridging the affordability gap in Abuja. Shelter Origins (https://shelterorigins.org) focuses on affordability which has enabled the NGO to provide quality homes and commercial properties at reasonable prices. This has made it possible for more Nigerians to own homes in decent locations.

Their approach to affordability involves using cost-effective construction methods and materials, flexible payment plans, and strategic location of their properties. Their properties are designed with the needs of Nigerians in mind, providing them with stylish and functional homes that cater to their daily lives.

The availability of affordable homes has several benefits for Nigerians. It provides them a sense of security and stability, promotes social cohesion, and improves their overall well-being. It also boosts economic growth by creating job opportunities and increasing consumer spending.

In conclusion, the lack of affordable housing in Abuja is a significant challenge that needs urgent attention and Shelter Origins is at the forefront of the efforts to address this issue. By providing affordable, sustainable, and high-quality housing solutions, Shelter Origins is making a positive impact on the lives of individuals and communities in Abuja.

Food / The Most Beautiful Restaurant In Lagos, Nigeria!!! by phawaaz: 2:44pm On May 06, 2022
We recently went on an exciting adventure into the wild at Amazonia Lagos, and this is what we found out.

Inspired by a love of nature and fondly known as the “Rain Forest”, Amazonia Lagos welcomed us with an experience that felt like we had been transported to a completely different country. Better still, it looked like a green paradise. The restaurant, located in Victoria Island, Lagos is a feast for the eyes and filled with an impeccable array of exotic South American and Asian-inspired dishes. The lush interior also replicates the Amazonian jungle of South America, a sight that had our jaws on the floor. So beautiful.

The overall energy, aesthetic and service at the restaurant was welcoming as it just happens to be the best spot to feast your eyes, create interesting content for social media, satisfy your meal cravings and just feed your soul. For us, we were able to do all of this and more.

The talented chefs at Amazonia have also mastered the art of creating a sense of excitement and adventure that we could taste in every bite we had there. From different fields, they know their onions (no pun intended) and simply offered us the best when it came to food. As we all know, most restaurants have to choose between gorgeous aesthetics and really good food. But at Amazonia, it was clear they didn’t play with their menu. The food was ridiculously good and the experiential ambience was also hitting all the right spots.

The whole experience felt like we were in a movie. From the hilarious monkeys at the entrance to the life-size gorilla that could rival King Kong, everything felt so hyper-realistic. If you’re looking for a place to immerse yourself in another world and just have a good time with beautiful scenery and delicious food, then Amazonia is the place for you. We left there feeling inspired more than ever.

PS: We made a reservation before going to the restaurant. Their number is 09088451902

Politics / Discovery Museum Plays Host To World Bank Managing Director by phawaaz: 5:57pm On Nov 11, 2021
As part of plans to expand the landscape of storytelling in the context of Nigeria’s rich cultural, political, and social history, Nigeria’s first digitally-driven museum, The Discovery Museum, recently played host to Mari Pangestu, Managing Director, Development Policy and Partnerships at the World Bank, in a visit the director described as an “incredible sensory experience.”

Launched in July 2021, the museum, a unique intersection between the past, present, and projected future of Africa’s most populous country is an ambitious project of Abuja-based company, The Art Tech District. The privately funded museum located in the heart of the Nation’s Federal Capital leverages cutting-edge technology to deliver Nigeria’s art, history, and culture to the modern world. With the world heading towards a Global Fourth Industrial Revolution and tourism rapidly evolving into one the most lucrative industries, the Art Tech District team, also being cognizant of the country’s large innovative pool and growing disconnect between the people and its complex past, set up the museum with the goal of providing an immersive experience into what it means to be Nigerian and how our past served as a roadmap to who we are now.

Art Tech District founder, Mosope Olaosebikan, its General Manager, Faridah Dikko, and Discovery Museum curator, Amanda Kirby Okoye were on hand to welcome the World Bank leader and her team to the compound. Introducing key members of staff present, Dikko gave a brief overview of Art Tech District, its ethos and goals, before handing over to the museum’s curator for a detailed tour of the state-of-the-art facility and its many displays and installations.

Opening the tour with an installation showing various regions in the country and their economic contributions over time, Okoye highlighted areas like eastern Nigeria known for its coal production, as well as northern Nigeria, home to a massive leather industry that currently exports raw materials to luxury leather companies like Louis Vuitton. Further down a dimly lit hallway, the museum opens up to a wide space that plays home to a leadership dome and life-like soldiers positioned as a way of honoring veterans and their indelible contributions to the nation’s building process. Recognizing former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Managing Director recalls meeting the two-time leader as Okoye explained Nigeria’s transition from military to democratic rule.

During the tour, the Managing Director also had access to a wide variety of classic and modern Nigerian creative art across the board from music to literature. Listening to playlists curated over several decades, she acknowledged the distinct beauty of the Nigerian sound that has had a cascading effect across multiple generations. A photo-op with images of colleagues like a former visitor and United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, and World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, follows a visceral Virtual Reality (VR) experience in the museum’s Conflict and Resolution room. Okoye goes on to explain the importance of this room, describing it as a “safe space for Nigerians to experience and have difficult conversations about tumultuous moments from our past.”
The museum also houses a Replica Room containing lookalikes of various art pieces that have been stolen from the shores of Nigeria. Curated to educate and stir up conversations surrounding the return of stolen art, the room shows diverse pieces from different parts of the country highlighting intricate crafting that has become synonymous with Nigerian art. Expanding on the digital aspect of the museum, Dikko also pointed out QR codes courtesy of a hackathon the company organized, that allows for visitors to scan for displays and installations for more detailed explanations on their origins and significance.

Taking in sights at the museum, the World Bank Managing Director also pointed out parallels between Nigeria and her home country of Indonesia. From a fraught political past marked by British colonial rule to male headgears and local board games (Nigeria’s ayo is referred to as congklack in Indonesia), she expressed surprise at the similarities between both countries.
Closing out the tour, Art Tech District founder, Mosope Olaosebikan reiterated the company’s commitment to inclusive and expansive development. Listing out projects such as the Zero Hunger Food Bank which works with company’s restaurants to feed young children monthly, the Financial Independence and Digital Women’s Initiative which caters to over 11,000 women in rural areas, as well as the SteamBox and Civic X Digital Literacy for children, Olaosebikan revealed that while the world headed towards technology at a quick pace, Art Tech District remains dedicated to including members of its rural community who are disproportionately affected by poverty and other factors.

Thanking the team for the tour, World Bank Managing Director described her time at the museum as “a very sensory experience and a really great way to learn about Nigeria.” Leaving the compound, she also congratulated the team on finding a creative way to talk to tell the Nigerian story.

“As we look towards the future, we are excited and passionate about doing more. Currently, we are working on another Discovery Museum located in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos,” Olaosebikan said when asked about the company’s plans. “Similarly, we are looking to expand beyond our shores, setting up museums in South, East, and other cities in West Africa. While we are excited about the future, we are also passionate about holding on to our rich and complex history.”

Nairaland / General / Nigeria’s First Digital Museum Welcomes French Ambassador With An Immersive Dive by phawaaz: 11:50am On Oct 26, 2021
In Africa, it is believed that expenditure on travel, accommodation, and leisure is expected to hit around $261.77 billion by 2030. While the tourism sector in Nigeria has continued to expand over the past few years, unilateral focus on the hospitality part of the industry has inadvertently caused a wide gap in art and history-centered tourism – a gap Abuja’s Art Tech District’s Discovery Museum is looking to fill.

Across the world, also, tourism has quickly morphed into one of the fastest-growing industries. With several African countries strategizing new ways of increasing the scope of tourism to meet global benchmarks, the privately funded Discovery Museum leverages technology, bringing Nigerian arts and culture into today’s world, thereby appealing to a global market and fostering conversations about our history.
Launched in July 2021, just as the world was adjusting to mercurial times caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic, the museum is a unique intersection of the past, present, and projected future of Africa’s most populous country. Located in the heart of Nigeria’s Federal Capital, it recently played host to His Excellency, Jérôme Pasquier, French Ambassador to Nigeria, in a special tour coordinated by its General Manager, Faridah Dikko.

Opening with a gritty, almost cave-like interior lit by hanging lanterns, Dikko described the museum’s overall feel as a “Journey through time”. It is characterized by a wide range of textures and carefully curated pieces, each, slowly easing its visitor in as they seamlessly glide from one era to the next.

Touring the first floor of the museum, it is hard to ignore the laser-like precision and intentionality behind its curation process, as it covers Nigeria’s rich past, starting from economic trade in the 1400s. A leadership dome serves as the home to images of all the men who have led the nation from its complex military past to its current democratic present. Some leaders, such as current President Muhammadu Buhari, as well as Nigeria’s first democratically elected president, Olusegun Obasanjo, make more than one appearance. Further exploration of this floor brings shows almost life-like figures of soldiers in the middle of battle. This part of the museum, Dikko explained to the Ambassador, is a memorial of some sorts, dedicated to the brave men and women who risked – and continue to risk – their lives in a bid to protect their country.

Upstairs, the Ambassador was ushered into an immersive sports box and music room. The latter holds playlists that capture the sonic zeitgeist of each decade, featuring legends like Onyeka Onwenu and Fela Anikulapo Kut, as well as, legend in the making, 2face Idibia. With Nigeria’s Afrobeats currently infiltrating the global music space as seen in the successes of new age artistes like Wizkid and Burna Boy, this room feels more relevant than ever, as it shows the country’s musical journey through time.

Although a lot of museums focus on political and economic history, Discovery Museum casts a wider net as it highlights what it means to be Nigerian, showcasing not just the country’s political and economic history, but the milestones of its vibrant art, literature, and entertainment scenes. The works of authors like Sefi Atta and Chimamanda Adichie can be seen in a writer’s box decorated with retro typewriters, while Seun Adeyemi’s intricate merger of modern-day art with old fashion artworks also makes an appearance.

A conflict and resolution room offers a glimpse into historical moments, albeit violent, that have led us to where we are as a nation. Hard to talk about and painful, these events continue to impact Nigerians with trauma cascading one generation to the next. Covering pivotal moments like the civil and Yoruba wars, this room educates Nigerians on past events that caused division, while creating space for dialogue on not just their resulting impact, but on how the country and its people can move forward.

Another museum standout is the Art Replica room, showcasing identical replicas of pieces most Nigerians don’t have access to. And with an ongoing conversation surrounding the return of stolen Nigerian artifacts on display in Britain and other countries, this room feels poignant.
“All of this cost a lot, no?” the Ambassador asked. However, the museum’s founder and designer, Mosope Olaosebikan, is on hand to explain that for what the company is trying to achieve, it’s all worth it. “It’s fascinating that as the capital, we don’t have anywhere you can go that tells the story of our country. We are looking to solve that problem,” he says. “A lot of people come into Abuja and there’s no place for them to fully experience Nigeria except few pockets, so what this does is, it brings everything to one place and the best part is it's digital so the content can easily adapt and change with the times.”

Olasebikan’s statement is reflective of Nigeria’s tech scene. Buoyed by a large pull of talent, it has often found creative and innovative solutions to fill various gaps. But while the FinTech sector continues to enjoy exponential growth as evidenced by deals amounting to over $600 million in funding between 2014 and 2019, tech, as it relates to tourism is slowly making its way up and Discovery Museum is at the forefront of this movement.
