Mankind2024: The Quiet Triumph: How a "Boring" Investment in Transcorp Hotels Turned N325,000 into Over N17 Million or 5,130% ROI.
In the fast-paced world of stock trading, where algorithms flash across screens and traders chase the next hot tip, there exists a quieter path to wealth—one paved with patience, discipline, and unyielding grit. This is the story of one such journey, inspired by the legends of value investing and the profound insights of behavioral psychology.
Back in 2021, amid the uncertainties of a post-pandemic world, I made a simple decision: I purchased 100,000 shares of Transcorp Hotels Plc (TRANSCOHOT) at total cost of N3.25 per share. That modest investment totaled just N325,000 (Inclusive of Transaction cost) a seed planted in fertile ground.
Transcorp Hotels, the hospitality arm of the Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc, owns iconic properties like the Transcorp Hilton Abuja, a five-star landmark in the heart of Nigeria's capital, known for its luxurious accommodations, world-class conferencing facilities, and serene gardens.
I wasn't chasing excitement. I describe myself as a "boring" investor—one who evolves steadily, from "smart" strategies to a bridge of consistent, long-term holding. My inspiration came from the timeless wisdom of Warren Buffett and the late Charlie Munger, whose partnership at Berkshire Hathaway demonstrated that extraordinary wealth often comes from ordinary, disciplined.
Their philosophy was enriched for me by the work of Caroline Miller on behavioral psychology. She showed how human endeavors—investing included—are won not by fleeting intelligence or complex formulas, but by authentic grit: the ability to persevere through noise, volatility, and doubt.
Studies and real-world evidence back this up. "Smart" investors, armed with algorithms and quick triggers, often switch strategies at the first sign of market turbulence, eroding gains through fees, taxes, and poor timing. Boring investors, however, stay the course. They ignore the daily chatter, the trolls, the bullies urging "sell now" or "buy this hot stock." They embody patience in a volatile world.
Fast forward to today, December 24 2025. That small seed has blossomed into a giant tree. With Transcorp Hotels shares trading around N170 per share—a remarkable rise fueled by strong post-pandemic recovery, operational excellence, and expanding hospitality assets—my holding is now valued at approximately N17 million. This isn't luck. It's the compounded magic of time, discipline, and believing in a solid company's long-term potential. In Nigeria, where many workers' lifetime pensions might not reach such figures, this growth represents financial freedom earned quietly.
Wealth building is a marathon, not a sprint. In volatile markets like the NGX, where emotions run high, the secrets remain unchanged: patience and discipline.
To new investors reading this—perhaps in forums filled with noise—stay encouraged. Ignore the detractors. Plant your seeds wisely, water them with resolve, and watch them grow into forests.
This boring path? It's the one that often leads to the most beautiful destinations. lol hmm NSEMPA That is the folio app used by Morgan, Atlass, and some other stockbrokers. There is a tab section called 'portfolio', kindly take a screenshot to show the current position as you claim: "my holding is now valued at approximately N17 million" |

Locotrader: Pity yourself first my bro. Everything is an opportunity for Loco. We no dey trap for market. With cash you are safe so far averaging up or down is allowed. The average down entry is the koko in every pullback or bears. You misunderstand what i mean. The 50–50 approach is specifically for situations where someone becomes unsure about a position they’ve taken. for example mr. X buys 100,000 shares at @2.70 because he’s confident there’s an immediate upside. But then the price falls to 2.50 and just lingers there. He starts feeling that classic village-people dilemma many “investors” here know too well: If I sell now, the price will suddenly go up. If I hold, price might keep going down. So, he splits the decision and sells half. If the stock goes up, his remaining position benefits — and he can even rejoin the rally using some proceeds from the half he sold. If the stock goes down, he now has cash to buy back at a more strategic entry point. |

mikeapollo: And there is always some information asymmetry in the market, so not all information is available to all market participants at all times, hence the price does not always reflect all information about a stock Exactly and a more complete way to express that would be: The current price is a summation of activity shaped by the hand of conviction, guided by information seen and unseen. |

Itzlinda: You are right my brother, very right. The problem is corruption is norm in Nigeria. I have worked in two government agencies and I can confidently tell you everyone is corrupt in Nigeria. From the CEO of the organisation receiving kick back to the contractor and government supervisors conniving to cut corners and receive their part. I have only met few public servants that are upright, they also do the chopping but atleast they are not greedy and have people at heart. That's why I just gave up on this country.
Despite the hard stance of Buhari against corrupt people, corruption still went on unabated under him.
Tinubu is not even pretending to fight corruption.. Corruption is not just in Nigeria, it is everywhere - it especially goes hand in hand with democracy. All democratic nations have this problem the only difference is that unlike in Nigeria the so-called Western countries practice covert corruption. Did you hear what was happening in USAID and other American institutions? For decades they had been carrying out corruption in phenomenal magnitudes - well hidden from prying eyes. Forbes needs to do a thorough auditing cause there are so many government officials that should be on their list. |

jonnysessy: I stand by what i said and i even went ahead and explained myself. You can never predict this market accurately. Your chart, graphs, fundamental analysis. technical analysis, sentiments etc are taking you to a direction while the market is taking you to an opposite direction. That's the point. Just imagine if everyone could predict the market. Let's take Japaul as an example; we all know that by 22nd it would be 2.30 and that by 29th it will be 4.60 and that by Sep 5th it will be 3.00 and so on. When you know that it will reverse at 2.30, who will sell at 2.30? It will never get to 2.30 and it will never get to 4.60. Unpredictability is necessary. |

Two stocks that has been most bashed and abused here....
JAPAUL is the next to be heavily abused in the days ahead And I wonder if it would be able to stand up to abuse - ELLAH did and did so gracefully! Beautiful Ellah lakes driver and conductor making all on board safe and portforlio-healthy But the driver of Japaul tends to act like a mad man.
