Politics › BREAKING NEWS ; Nigerian Army Retakes Baga Town From Boko Haram. BBC. by PhockPhockMan(op): 8:28pm On Feb 21, 2015 |
The Nigerian army has retaken the north-eastern town of Baga, held by Boko Haram militants since 3 January. In a tweet from its official account, the army said that "mopping up" operations were continuing. It also claimed in a separate statement that it had killed many Boko Haram militants, though this has not been independently verified. Nigeria says 150 people died when Boko Haram took Baga and nearby Doron Baga, but locals said up to 2,000 died. Residents were left largely undefended as the military deserted when the jihadists attacked the towns. This time, the army claims it was the militants who fled, with some drowning in Lake Chad as they tried to escape the aerial bombardment. It added that 1,000 mines had been laid in Baga, which soldiers had to negotiate before entering. The BBC's Will Ross in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, say other sources have confirmed that Boko Haram no longer control Baga. The massacre there is regarded as the worst attack of Boko Haram's six-year insurgency. Thousands fled across Lake Chad when the assault began and have since taken refuge in Chad. Chadian push-back Boko Haram, which controls of much of Nigeria's north-east, has killed thousands of people in its drive to establish an Islamic state. In recent months it has also carried out cross-border raids in neighbouring Chad, Cameroon and Niger, attacking villages and military bases. All three countries have joined Nigeria to form a military coalition against the Islamist militants. Also on Saturday, Niger's army reported the deaths of 15 Boko Haram militants following clashes in an island on the Niger side of Lake Chad. Seven Niger soldiers and one civilian also died in the attack. http://m.bbc.com/news/world-africa-31568055 |

Politics › Re: I Can Vote For Buhari Against My Father, Says Tam David-west by PhockPhockMan: 10:39am On Feb 21, 2015 |
Nakarey: Eminent virologist and former oil minister, Professor Tam David-West is a dyed-in-the-wool supporter of Gen Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This is what he had to say about president Goodluck jonathan and amiable General Muhammadu Buhari. Excerpt:
About President Goodluck Jonathan, it seems you have relaxed your criticism of him lately.
I have not relaxed on him. I don’t know Jonathan, I’ve not met him, and I don’t want to meet him.
Doctorate degree does not make one a good leader or President. What is Ph.D? We are so interested in titles. ‘Oh, Ph.D! For the first time, Nigeria is having two graduates as President and Vice President’. I came out again and said, that does not mean anything. President Jimmy Carter of America had two Ph.Ds, Jimmy Carter had Ph.D in Nuclear Physics and Ph.D in Chemistry. Was he the best President? Leadership is a different thing. I had told him before, it was in my article. If Jonathan is paying me N2 million a day, I will not work for him because Jonathan doesn’t impress me as someone who exercises the brains God has given him well. I’ll give you example, fuel subsidy, fuel subsidy. I said there is no fuel subsidy, they abused me. Finally, what do we find now? Trillions were paid, it is all fraud! And yet, look, the Finance Minister said they were going to spend billions again on fuel subsidy. I said, Jonathan, why can’t you build refineries, build four refineries before you leave, we will immortalize you for ever. As you build refineries, price of petroleum will come down and everybody will praise you. If General Buhari were elected in 2011, if they did not rig him out, one of the things he would have done in his one hundred days in office was to bring back fuel price to N40 per litre. If you like, you can close your petrol station and it will remain closed. But Jonathan would say, ‘fuel subsidy, no going back’, ‘N5,000 note, no going back’, Bamanga Tukur for PDP chairmanship or no other person.’ You don’t talk like that in a democracy, no going back, no going back, no going back, no going back and yet… Why I don’t like or support him is that, he is not a natural President, he is a parochial man. If not, why should Jonathan be comfortable with the bunch of sycophants that call themselves South- South Forum, South-South this, South- South that, who claim to support him? They even said South-South Forum supported him for fuel subsidy removal. They don’t even know what it means. They don’t know the dynamics. Jonathan does not realise that he is not doing well, if he does not realise, how can he improve? I’m objective. I will never support him!
You seem to love Buhari so much, what are your reasons for that?
Oh yes? Because, you see, I worked with him. Why do I love Buhari? First, any leader that is not corrupt is my man. Buhari is immaculately clean. The Forward to my two books on him was by General Abdulsalami Abubakar. Buhari is the only leader who has told his detractors, tell the world about my corruption, but they couldn’t. Babangida locked up Buhari for 40 months, he was so wicked. Buhari’s mother died while he was in detention. He came out and said, okay, tell the world about my corruption. Obasanjo was digging into Buhari, he set up probe of PTF. [b]They probed Buhari so much but refused to publish the report, but Buhari said, publish the report. I love Buhari, he is honest, straightforward, clean, and he loves Nigeria. I can fight for Buhari anytime, any day. In fact, if my father is contesting an election against Buhari, I will vote against my father[b]. Why? I will say my father, you are not meant for politics, I know you are as clean as Buhari, but you cannot do it (prolonged laughter).

Politics › Re: Nigerian Opposition Leader Buhari Arrives In London On ‘charm Offensive’ Pics by PhockPhockMan: 9:15pm On Feb 20, 2015 |
praxisnetworks:
Nigerian opposition leader Muhammadu Buhari has flown to London in an attempt to ease Western fears about his leadership in the event that he succeeds in winning the upcoming presidential election.
Buhari, election candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), is up against incumbent Goodluck Jonathan in the vote, delayed until March 28 by the electoral commission on the recommendation of the country’s security services.
The security authorities claimed that a six-week military operation against the radical Islamist group Boko Haram, which is being conducted in the northeast of the country, was scheduled to begin on the same day as the election, leaving an inadequate security presence for voters in the rest of the country. According to his campaign, after flying in from the Nigerian capital, Abuja, Buhari is set to speak at the foreign policy NGO the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House as well as holding talks with “key members of the British political establishment”. However, Chatham House could not confirm that he would be speaking, only saying it was “likely” and Newsweek could not determine who Buhari would be meeting.
Manji Cheto, West Africa analyst at political risk consultancy Teneo Intelligence, believes that Buhari’s flying visit to Britain is to show Western officials that he is someone who will “adhere to democratic principles” if he is elected next month.
“This is designed to position Buhari as pro-investment and pro-Western partners,” she says. “What [western officials] have heard is mostly information that the PDP [the rival People’s Democratic Party] has said to the world through propaganda.”
“It’s him having private meetings as well to calm Western partners about any potential autocratic tendencies so to speak,” she adds.
A journalist with knowledge of the situation on the ground in Nigeria, who declined to be named on matters of Nigerian politics, added that the devout Muslim politician is on a “charm offensive” to reassure Western officials about not only his own credentials but also his ability to tackle the threat of the Boko Haram insurgency.
“There is a feeling of anxiety among Western governments about Buhari, about what he represents and who his backers are,” the reporter noted. “So it doesn’t surprise me that he has flown in for talks before the election.”
“He wants to, as much as reassure them about himself, also convince them that he has got a plan for dealing with Boko Haram. I think that would be top of his agenda.”
Buhari - a former military general - has failed on three occasions (2003, 2007 and 2011) in his bid to return as Nigerian president since the country moved from a series of military rulers to a democratic system in 1999.
He survived a Boko Haram assassination attempt last July when a suicide bomber aligned to the radical Islamist group targeted his car in the northern city of Kaduna.
The PDP has won every election since Nigeria since the end of military rule and is the favourite heading into the 28 March election.

VIPERVENOM: you're not making sense. I know you are judging from what he wore. People like ur president wear the same type of clothes everytime at different places like his black attire. So d fact dat buhari wore dat back in 2013 doesn't mean he cant dress like dat again. Even you too you repeat clothes It's near impossibility to wear exactly the same clothes without differences. Look at the picture of jonathan you posted, check the STUD on the president’s chest and compare, check Buhari's cap. |

LFJ: You need more than paper certificate to govern a nation. Jonathan is a good example of a PhD certificate holder without brain, while Bill Gate is a good example of how the school drop out can surprise the world when is giving an opportunity. We're running a democratic system which is anchored constitutionality. As far as the constitution of federal Republic of Nigeria is concerned, Buhari is not qualified to be our president. |

LFJ: I don't expect you to think otherwise. You need to be smart to understand that Jonathan is not worth to be a senior prefect of a secondary school. So a phd holder is less qualified than a secondary school drop-out? Oh my God. |
