Christianity EtcBusinesswoman Loses N97million, House, Searching For Rev Father Mbaka. by PhockPhockMan(op): 12:05pm On Aug 10, 2015
As a Christian and an international businesswoman, Mrs. Vivian Amadife’s greatest wish was an opportunity to personally meet Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka, a Catholic priest based in Enugu. Moved by her belief that as soon as she gets to meet the priest, her life and businesses will improve, she was excited when her friend of 10 years introduced her to one Dr Ohamadike, founder of Esoteric World Discovery Limited. She was told that Dr Ohamadike is highly spiritual that Father Mbaka found him worthy to be a friend. The quest, she alleged, costs her a house and about N97 million. She reported the incident to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which recovered her house and still investigating the N97million alleged fraud.

While narrating her ordeal to Saturday Sun, Vivian called on Nigerians to be wary of such persons whom she alleged defrauded her. She claimed that her desire to tell her story was as a result of several threats to her life to drop the case or die and to prevent victims from getting trapped.

“In business, there are bound to be ups and downs. I had so many of them and needed to bounce back. I am a spiritual person who believes so much that with God all things are possible. This was why I became a fan of Reverend Mbaka.

“I told Obiageli whom I thought was a reliable friend that one of my greatest wishes was to have an audience with Father Mbaka. I knew quite well that if he lays his hands on me, my life and businesses will never remain the same. Obiageli told me that her spiritual father, Dr Ohamadike has direct access to Father Mbaka. To further convince me, she told me that she had personally witnessed where Father Mbaka called him and they spoke for more than two hours.

“I was carried away with my desire to meet Father Mbaka, that was how I fell into their trap. It was easy for him to tell me anything and I will fall for it. When I finally met Father Mbaka at my brother-in-law’s burial, he felt bad. He was screaming and said that he warned people to stop using his name to lie and steal. He also made it clear that nemesis will surely catch up with them and they will be exposed.

“Although we currently have several cases in court, I want to use this medium to tell Nigerians to be wary of those they trust especially those that parade themselves as people of God. If anyone could have told me that my supposedly dearest friend would conspire to dupe me, I would swear that it is a lie. I have moved on despite the many threats from them. They threatened to kill me if I do not drop the case. Well, you know if you have God by your side and do not do things that are questionable, you should not be afraid, especially when you go to equity with clean hands,” she said.

On when and how she became Obiageli’s friend, she alleged that they met over 10 years ago.

“It all started sometime in 2003, when the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Dr. Onaga introduced both of us at an event. Then I was building an industry in Enugu and she was producing pure water. Considering the link, I was at peace to be friends with her since I do not know anybody in Enugu State.

“Initially, I used to stay in the hotel whenever I visited till she lured me into staying in her house at 1, Ideoha Street, Independence Layout. Then her housegirl used to do the cooking till she decided to be doing it herself,” Vivian said.

Humbled, Vivian felt honoured when her newfound friend decided to prepare her every meal. “For a long time, she had tried fruitlessly to introduce me to her spiritual friend, whose nickname was Dr Ohamadike. She told me that it was the man’s prayer that made it possible that as rich as she was, kidnappers and armed robbers had never remembered her. I never took her seriously till kidnappers picked my friend’s son. Although the boy was later found, the family paid so much money. I was made to believe that it was his intervention that saw to the release of the boy. Before then I had parted with 1000 dollars which I was asked to pay to facilitate the prayers that will touch the heart of the kidnappers to release the boy.

“When I realised that his demand was becoming outrageous, I informed my friend who told me that if I don’t give money to Ohamadike that I will not experience any form of miracle. It was then that I was made to believe that Ohamadike was one of Mbaka’s close friends and confidants. She assured me that my business which was at a dwindling stage will surely pick up. She told me that Ohamadike was the only one that can assist me to get quick appointment with the priest.

“To further confuse me, my only son developed acute stomachache. It was so bad that all efforts to get a cure failed. Desperate not to lose my son, I consulted him. He told me that before he cures anyone that he must conduct a spiritual search through his ministry known as Esoteric World Discovery Limited,” Vivian said.

According to Vivian, she further got trapped when Dr Ohamadike assured her that the American business that she got involved with will further yield her so much money. “I was fully convinced that he was real not knowing that my supposed friend was sharing my life story with him. I was ready to do anything possible to make progress in life. I trusted him and the prayer that he was conducting on my behalf. Most especially I had hope that he was working on getting me an appointment with Father Mbaka. He told me that God was using him on behalf of Mbaka to bless me.

“He came and said that he was into foreign exchange which I agreed to fund. I even contacted my friend to be part of the Forex trading and she invested about N16million. All the money was paid directly into the man’s Esoteric World Discovery Limited account.

“In fact, it was Pamela that told me that we were in a fraudulent transaction. She came to my house crying that she has lost her money. I tried to assure her but she told me that Dr Ohamadike had emptied his account. I had to pay the N16 million back to Pamela with my own money in order to convince her that I was not part of the scam and again, her yelling was becoming uncontrollable. I later went to Obiageli who introduced me to Dr Ohamadike and told her to call the man, because I knew they were still talking on the phone. I also told her the story of how the man bolted with Pamela’s money. She kept assuring me that the man said he would bring back the money,” she narrated.

After two weeks of endless wait, Vivian decided to take the matter to EFCC. “I told Obiageli that I would report the matter to the police. Unknown to me, she informed him of my intentions.

He later resurfaced and started telling me about my US business that had been stalled since 2011. I am the company’s sole agent in the whole of Africa, but their production was being delayed and millions of naira was trapped in the deal. I can’t explain what came over me as I accepted him back and continued spending money in the name of prayers. Part of what he told me about my American business was that my contact person in US who is also in-charge of that deal would soon go blind, but I foolishly begged him not to allow the man go blind because he invented what would benefit the whole world.

“He now said that for him to stop the man from going blind he was going to take so much money from me,” she said.

Continuing the narration, Vivian explained that when she had run out of cash, Dr Ohamadike allegedly requested for a post-dated cheque. “He then asked for post-dated cheques. I agreed and gave him the cheques but refused to put a date on them. I told him that when the goods are imported from US and I start selling, he will be taking his own share of the money for not allowing the producer of the product to go blind. This would be done as soon as the money from sales come in, so he agreed and I gave him ten cheques – of 10 million each, totalling N100 million without dates.

“I never knew that this was another trap as he ran to the police and told them he gave me money to build a factory for him for N100 million, which I did not build. That the cheques I gave him for loan repayment bounced and the bank returned them to him. He was doing all these because I threatened to arrest him. She called me threatening that he was in Lagos with policemen from Abuja and if I don’t come and meet them, I will suffer. Luckily, all efforts to lure me to the hotel failed,” she said.

Aware of what might happen, Vivian sent her lawyer to go and find out what was actually happening. “I sent my lawyer, Chuks Okeugiri and Company to the hotel to find out what was going on. My lawyer warned me that they were no policemen but fraudsters. I told him to stay with them there while I alerted the Lagos CP, who immediately gave me some officers who came and arrested them.

“During the arrest, Dr Ohamadike confessed to the crime and said that he hired some men to pose as policemen. We also arrested his fake lawyer in the hotel. They were immediately moved to the Lagos State police command headquarters in Ikeja.

“At the police station, Dr Ohamadike knelt down and begged for forgiveness. He told the CP that he is a guy man (fraudster) and should be forgiven. He promised that he would pay me back my money. It was when he jumped bail that I arrested my friend, Obiageli and took her to the police special fraud unit, SFU, Milverton road. Ikoyi. One of her friends now called and begged me to release her that they will get Innocent wherever he was hiding, which he did. He was re-arrested at Abakaliki.

“I re-arrested Dr Ohamadike through operatives of EFCC. Luckily, at EFCC, they recovered my house which he and my so-called friend stole from me. He collected the house after milking me dry and I could no longer meet his financial demands. He even lied to the police that he bought my house and gave me money. I now challenged him in the presence of the police to show evidence of how he paid me. He lied to them that he paid me in dollars. While the police were still on this case, he went and broke the fence of that house, put new fence, gave my tenants quit notice. It was like a magic to me. Upon arrest, EFCC searched his house, found my house documents and handed them over to me. My undated cheques that he forged and put dates on are still with the police and they are yet to give them to EFCC,” she narrated.

She pleaded with operatives of EFCC to assist her in recovering her money which was fraudulently taken from her. “I want my money back, so far the law enforcement agencies have only retrieved N1million out of N97m plus. I want justice to prevail and deserving punishment meted out to the culprits to serve as a deterrent to others. So far, Dr Ohamadike collected more than N97 million most of which passed through his Esoteric World Discovery Limited Zenith bank account. He also collected my house in Enugu which was worth over N35 million. This fraud took place between 2013 and 2014,” Vivian alleged.

She also raised the alarm that the suspects were after her life and would stop at nothing to terminate her life. “There have been so many threats to my life since I started fighting Dr Ohamadike and my so-called friends for defrauding me of my entire life’s savings and sweat. They have made several attempts but failed.

“Obiageli on her part is threatening fire and brimstone and has not been apologetic. She has been in and out of EFCC and has also sued for her fundamental human rights, but lost on two occasions, even at the Federal High Court.

“I must commend the operatives of EFCC for their intervention in investigating and prosecuting the suspect. Bishop Onaga on his part had made it clear that he will not support my money to go down the drain. He has equally told me to go ahead and retrieve my money through any legal means,” Vivian narrated.

PoliticsAmaechi As Buhari’s Moral Burden. The Sun. by PhockPhockMan(op):
BY EVARISTUS DOUGLAS

One does not have to be super-intelligent to recognise that the elaborate social reception held in honour of Mr Rotimi Amaechi, former governor of Rivers State, at the Abuja International Conference Centre on Sunday, August 2, is part of an equally elaborate image laundering scheme for Mr Amaechi. The guests included Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Aishatu, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari; Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC); serving and former state governors, including Mallam Nasir El- Rufai of Kaduna, leading members of the APC and a host of others.

The sentiments heaped on Amaechi that night were effusive, with Vice President Osinbajo describing the guest of honour as a person worthy of emulation. Others eulogised the former Rivers State governor for the role he played in ensuring victory for the APC in the last general elections, especially the presidential polls. Rotimi Amaechi was Director General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, a position he got after he was apparently passed over as nominee for the Vice President slot.

But amid the torrents of eulogies, no one could satisfactorily explain or justify why such a galaxy of VIP guests were out to dine and wine in honour of Amaechi. The APC had long since celebrated its landmark electoral victory and President Buhari is inching towards his first 100 Days in office, although with an approval rating that is a far cry from the euphoria that swept him to power. Before he left office as governor on May 29, Amaechi had also staged a book launch in Lagos, to celebrate his tenure as Rivers State Governor. The Lagos event was equally well attended with the usual partisan crowd.

However, on August 2, Mr Amaechi did not disappoint in inadvertently disclosing the rationale for the social reception hosted in his honour in Abuja. It was to muster support as a counter measure to any move intended to block his nomination for a federal appointment. If other APC stalwarts in the other 35 states were to be hosted to similar ostentatious receptions, to garner support for their ministerial nomination, the cost would be enormous and the very idea itself runs contrary to decency. It’s worrisome that, while the Buhari administration is trying to enunciate a regime of frugality, some persons are spending lavishly to polish Amaechi’s image. As has been his tendency in the past couple of years, Amaechi, at the reception, disparaged immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan, dropping the innuendo of suspected graft in the high claims for fuel subsidy during Jonathan’s administration. Amaechi also went after his successor as governor, Chief Nyesom Wike. “May God not give me the kind of ambition of Nyesom Wike; he can sell anybody,” Amaechi was reported as saying at p.5 of The Nation newspaper of Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Amaechi further said: “Let me tell you what is currently going on in Rivers State. The governor and PDP are afraid of me getting an appointment to the Federal Executive Council because that will determine what the politics of Rivers State will be. They know that the current President abhors corruption and the only way they can stop me from getting the appointment is to associate me with corruption. The people that know me in Rivers State know that I don’t like money…And I expect them to defend me that I don’t like money.”

Pray, what evidence is available since 1999 when Nigeria returned to democratic rule that the politics of Rivers State has been determined by whoever was minister from the state? When Amaechi himself became Governor in 2007, what role, if any, did the minister from the state play? While Amaechi was governor in his second term, Nyesom Wike was a member of the Federal Executive Council. Was Amaechi scared of Wike as minister? At least, the impression created by his frequent vituperations is that Amaechi is a fearless lion. Why would Wike be scared of Amaechi being a minister, or other appointee of the Federal Government? Those present at the Abuja reception for Amaechi probably see only one dimension of the man. Rivers people see several dimensions. In the twilight of his eight-year rule as governor, Amaechi took on the unusual role of DG of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, which meant that Amaechi abandoned governance at the state level. For those who are quick to cite international best practices, it will surely be a difficult exercise to cite a parallel example of a governor of a State in the United States, virtually abandoning the post for which he was elected, to play the role of lead national coordinator for a US presidential candidate. Amaechi was unapologetically obstructionist in his last days as governor of Rivers. He did not hand over to Wike, as civil servants in the state were under strict directive not to prepare any handover notes. Furthermore, Amaechi’s agents went shopping from one court to another in search of an injunction to stop Wike from being sworn in on May 29, on the ground that Rivers State had neither a substantive nor Acting Chief Judge to perform the swearing in and their futile search for an injunction was notwithstanding the sad fact that Amaechi had crippled both the judiciary and the legislature in the latter part of his tenure. But, if he could not stop Wike from assuming office, Amaechi ensured that Wike inherited a poisoned chalice. Despite a valid court injunction, Amaechi’s government went ahead to conduct a farcical local government election on May 23 and then purported to swear in new council officials. When he spoke at the August 2 reception, Amaechi made a song and dance of his claim that he “doesn’t like money.” The insinuation is that those who like money are corrupt, and therefore will not pass Buhari’s test of integrity. How might we then classify abuse of office? Well, at the same reception, Mallam El-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State, committed a faux pas, by praising Amaechi for deploying (financial) resources to help fight electoral battles in PDP-controlled states. Amaechi is no Rockefeller, nor is he a Bill Gates, or a Dangote. Whose resources did Amaechi deploy to fight electoral battles? How did he have access to the resources, bearing in mind the processes for spending government funds? And yet, Amaechi is saying that people want to tarnish his image. It’s indeed a commonly held view that if Buhari is really serious in fighting corruption, he must begin with those who assisted him to power, particularly the money-bags who came with funds from yet-to-be-disclosed sources. Amaechi claims that as chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum, he disagreed vehemently with former President Jonathan over the management of the Treasury, that is, the Federation Account. But the jury is still out on how he, Amaechi, managed the resources of Rivers State and those resources include receipts from the Federation Account as well as the state’s internally generated revenue, which at a point hit over N7 billion monthly.

“I chose the path of honesty and truthfulness. You cannot catch me doing such a thing,” Amaechi said at the reception, painting himself as a saint, while demonizing Jonathan and Wike. Well, Amaechi was Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly for eight years and governor for an equal duration. He knows the paper trail for government transactions, in particular the release of funds. Problems arise where due process has not been followed, or where on closer examination a transaction is manifestly fraudulent, or the circumstances of the transaction and payment are questionable. For example, a consulting firm suddenly appears; it is given a job without tender and payment is directed to be made to the firm, even when in all reasonableness the firm could not have executed the job within the timeframe and for the huge sum it’s being paid.

Again, as stated earlier, the jury is still out on Amaechi, and he needs not cry wolf. After all, a clear conscience fears no accusation. The abandoned Port Harcourt mono-rail project tells a gripping story about the Amaechi years as governor and likewise the still-born Karibi Whyte Specialist Hospital. President Buhari, it’s said, is intolerant of corruption, as he would not shut his eyes to red-hot evidence against a guy who has been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Above all, President Buhari has given firm assurance in recent interviews that no one, including members of the ruling APC, would be spared if found to be corrupt. Time will tell what granite-solid evidence will emerge as to the management of public resources by the immediate past administration in Rivers State.

Mbaise from 1899 to 1941.......

As at 1890, there was neither a place known and called Mbaise,
nor were the people who inhabited the vast areas that extended from Ekwerazu to Ahiara down to the banks of Imo River in Ezinihitte and southwards up to the Azaraegbelu valley known as Mbaise people. The term Mbaise was an artificial creation of circumstance.
The British colonial government had no control over ‘Mbaise’ people until the turn of the 20th century and their coming into contact with Mbaiseland was also circumstantial. In 1901, during the Anglo-Aro war, the British military headed by Captain Douglas needed a short cut to Ohafia hills where Ohafia Warriors encamped fighting for the Eze Aro. The natural way was for them to cut through Owerri down towards Umuahia, and in doing so, they came in contact with Mbaise people.
With this discovery, they hastened to impose their authority on Mbaise people, and that was not without minor scuffles of resistance in 1901. As the Aro War raged, they moved through Mbaise throughout that period, which gave them opportunity to know the hinterlands better in preparation for a more organized take over after the Aro Expedition.
In 1903, the British set up a court at Owerri and extended the reach and authority of that court to Mbaise. And in 1904, they formally merged the administration of Owerri, and Mbaise as one entity. However, this was to change as a result of an unfortunate incident which happened in 1905. Dr Rogers Stweart, a medical doctor in the British Office who came to help them tackle Malaria during the Aro Wars, strayed from where they camped in Eke Nguru and lost his way. He was caught at Onicha and was killed while his bicycle was hanged up to a tree.
The death of Dr. Stewart led to the Ahiara Punitive Expedition carried out by Captain Brian Douglas and Captain Harold Hastings in 1906. That was called Ogu Dangalasi by our people and it led to the massacre of hundreds of our people by the invading British forces.
To curtail a repeat of such, the British established courts at Nkwogwu and Okpala to curtail the distance between Mbaise and Owerri. And they appointed Warrant Chiefs in the two courts.
At the Nkwogwu Court, they appointed Mr. Onwuegbulem Ekechukwu of Umuanuma Nguru mainly because he was very fair in complexion, and was friendly; they see his complexion as something closer to theirs. They nicknamed him Nwaturuocha and he later changed his name from Onwuegbulem Ekechukwu to Waturuocha of Nguru. He was the first Mbaise man to have direct contact with the Whiteman.
He later introduced his cousin from Nnarambia Ahiara Mr. Onyekwere Njoku to the Colonial master and they equally made him Warrant Chief, Mr Onyekweere was easily accepted by the British because he played a very important role in helping them with logistics during the Ahiara Punitive Expedition of 1906 to avenge the death of Dr. Stewart.
For the court at Okpala, Nwigwe Akanma Nduka from Oke Uvuru, Ihekoronye Nwachukwu from Mbutu, and Nwachukwu Ogbuokiri were all made Warrant Chiefs. The native court judges were W. Waturuocha (Nguru), P. Onyekwere (Ahiara East) Anyanwu Odirichukwu (Ekwerazu-east). These men were lords unto themselves across Mbaise, and their words were laws unto the land.
The first Christian missionaries came to Mbaise in 1911 and they were from the Christian Missionary Society (CMS) mission. They camped at Ife Ezinihitte, and and Ubonukam Onicha Ezinihitte, and the schools followed suit.
In 1915, the Catholic Mission came to Nguru, through Chief Anyamele who also brought the school at St. Joseph Ogbor Nguru unarguably, the first Catholic school in Mbaise.
In 1916, Catholic Church arrived Ahiara through Chief Onyekwere together with the school at St. Bridges Ahiara, while St. Patrick’s Church and School Ekwerazu were established at Umuokirika in 1917.
In 1927 the first Mbaise man obtained standard six certificate. He was Chief Pius Nwoga from primary school at Egbu.

The birth of 'Mbaise'

After the Women Riots (Ogu Ndom) which had Mbaise as one of the effective epicenters, the British government undertook a fundamental reform and restructuring of the native court administrative system. This was because some of the complaints that were laid as responsible for the Ogu Ndom centered on the high handedness of the Warrant Chiefs, and the fact that the people in the hinterland are not getting justice because the courts are far from their villages.
Afterwards a conference was convened by the District Officer, Mr. L.E Chardwick for Mbaise leaders, it was called . The Chardwick Conference of 1941, and after the Conference, there was the emergence of five sectional clan/native courts were established at Itu for Ezinihitte, Uzuaku-Obohia for Ekwerazu, Orie Ahiara for Ahiara, Uvuru for Oke-Uvoro and at Enyiogugu for Agbaja people. The five native court areas became clan units of native authority and served as a milestone towards carving out Mbaise from Owerri division.
Following this development, the colonial administrators and the Mbaise Paramount Chiefs who were members of the Owerri Divisional Union deliberated and considered federating the five court areas to form one political unit. Those who took part in this discussion were Dennis Nwachukwu Abii, Japhet Jamike Iwunna, Pius Ogu Nwoga, Waturuocha, among others. It was at this meeting that Japhet Jamike Iwunna suggested the name MBAISE, meaning five court areas and adopted as the political unit.
In 1941 Mr. L.E. Chardwick, the District Officer approved the name with one administrative headquarter and treasury. Enyiogugu served as the administrative headquarter and treasury between 1941 and 1948.
In 1948, the treasury was transferred to Aboh in Oboama na Umunama. This arrangement created two sets of warrant Chiefs, those accountable to the District Officer (Nwa D.O), and those accountable to the District Commissioner (“Nwa D.C”). This resulted in court sessions being held in two shifts.

CrimeWhy I Slept With My Friend’s Teenage Daughter – UNILAG Lecturer. Picture. by PhockPhockMan(op): 2:52am On Aug 08, 2015
For nine days, Shola (not real name) was in pain. The abdominal pain she endured felt as if a knife got stuck in her, she told Saturday PUNCH.

She was scared but she had no choice but to endure the pain since she couldn’t imagine telling her parents the unimaginable trauma she had been subjected to that led to the pains she was going through.

“How could I face them? How could I tell them that the man they handed me over to, to help process my admission, had raped me?” Shola said.

But then, much as she tried, she couldn’t continue hiding her ordeal, especially when the pains had become unbearable. Shola’s parents eventually got to know what their daughter had passed through in the quest of trying to become an undergraduate.

Eighteen-year-old Shola is one of the numerous hopeful candidates, wishing to secure admission into the University of Lagos. But her score of 211 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination fell short of the requirement for Mass Communication, which was her choice.

Her father, who resided in Abesan Estate in Ipaja area of Lagos, had done all he could to ensure that her daughter would become a university student this year but all his efforts seemed to be futile.

“Someone told me to send her UTME registration number. He checked on the university website and said she was not eligible. Not convinced, I went to the school myself to check and it was the same problem.

“I had to start making calls to other universities where she could secure admission and someone told me she they could be helped to gain admission into the Olabisi Onabanjo University with that score.

“As soon as the UTME result was released around May, I informed a friend of mine who lives within the estate, who is a lecturer at UNILAG. I took my daughter to him and he promised that when it was time for the post-UTME examination, he would help her out with the process.”

The friend Shola’s father mentioned is Dr. Akin Baruwa, a lecturer in the Department of Accounting, UNILAG, who is also a chairman of one of the community development committees of Abesan Estate.

Shola’s father explained that when she realised that her result was not being accepted as eligible for Mass Communication, he went back to Baruwa on July 22, 2015 and the lecturer told him to bring his daughter the following morning so he could take her to campus and see how he could help.

“He said they had to take off very early the following morning. I did not suspect anything unusual about that timing because I trusted him. By 4am, I roused my daughter. We prepared and I took her to Baruwa’s house. I did not opt to follow them because I trusted him. I did not imagine that anything untoward could happen,” he said.

Baruwa and Shola took off from Abesan about 5am. She would later return home by 11am. His daughter was noticeably moody as she came home. Two hours earlier, Baruwa had called the father and told him that he had done all he could but that it did not seem her admission would be possible.

“When he told me that, I believed he had done all he could and told my daughter to come back home,” he said.

But it was not the same Shola that home that came back. She was moody and noticeably quiet. She went straight to her room and locked the door.

In company with child rights activist, Mrs. Esther Ogwu, whom the case was reported to by the family, our correspondent spoke with Shola in private to give details of what actually happened in Baruwa’s office that day.

It was obvious the girl was trying hard to stay composed. While she spoke, her right hand would go to her lower abdomen occasionally. When asked about it, she explained that she was still feeling some pain, which had reduced a lot since she got treatment.

Shola said on Thursday, July 23, 2015, as her father handed her over to the lecturer, she still did not suspect anything until they got to around Maryland.

“While I was inside the car, he started to touch my hair and rub my head. I was very surprised and I brushed off his hand. He never tried it again till we got to UNILAG,” Shola alleged.

According to her, while they were on the way, Baruwa was showing her different parts of town, telling her about places she did not know.

She alleged, “While we were on the way, he asked if I go out at all and I told him I don’t usually go out. And he would show me a place and say ‘This is Maryland o. You may not know since you don’t go out.’ Then he took me to the Yaba College of Technology. He drove inside and showed me the place. We later proceeded to UNILAG.

“When we got to his office, it was about 6.30am. The offices in the building were deserted. He said he liked to be early to avoid traffic. He told me to sit on the couch in his office.

“I noticed he was restless. He would stand and go outside sometimes. He asked if I wanted anything, I told him I was fine. He put on the television; I told him I was okay. He put on the air conditioner and I told him I did not want that.

“He had already heated water and made Coffee, which he offered to me. I told him I was okay and really did not need that. He then put the hot Coffee on the table. Later, out of respect, I took the cup and sipped a little. I started to feel drowsy not long after that. I did not know why.”

According to Shola’s narration, Baruwa later took her to see a female official in another building who examined her documents and explained further that there was little that could be done on her admission.

Baruwa reportedly said she might have to opt for diploma.

Shola claimed that when they went back to his office, the lecturer kept her document on his table.

She said, “He kept standing and moving around the office. Later, he went outside and when he came back inside, he locked the door and kept the key on his table. I did not know what was happening.

“A moment later, he told me to pick up a paper for him beside the couch. As I bent down to pick up the paper, he pushed me into a corner of the couch and held me down as he forcibly removed my trousers and underwear.”

Our correspondent asked at this point if Shola made any attempt to shout to alert anybody nearby.

She claimed that she actually screamed but that the way he held her down did not allow her voice to be as audible as she had wanted it to be.

Shola claimed, “If people were around the office, they would have heard me shout. He held me down, and pulled down my trousers and underwear. I screamed and begged him to leave me alone but he did not.

“After he had his way, he released me. As soon as I pulled up my trousers, I grabbed the keys to the door and rushed out while he was dressing up. He was walking behind me as I walked downstairs from his office. He said nothing as I walked away crying. He later went back.”

Shola’s father told our correspondent that he had been able to secure a place for her to write her post-UTME examination for an admission into OOU but the young girl has refused to go.

When our correspondent asked Shola why she refused to go, she said “How can I be sure that this same thing would not happen there? I don’t know anybody there. If it happens again, where would I run to?”

Our correspondent tracked down Dr. Baruwa a day after speaking with Shola and he gave his version of the encounter.

According to him, he indeed had a sexual encounter with Shola but it was “consensual.”

The lecturer, who seemed to be in his early 40s, told our correspondent that he made the mistake of not doing enough to resist the temptation of ‘sleeping’ with Shola.

Speaking with our correspondent in the front of his house out of earshot of his wife and two children, Dr. Baruwa said, “I swear to God that the girl agreed to everything that happened. She was a chatty girl, who did not show any shyness.

“It is true that I took her to YABATECH and showed her places. What is not true is that I deliberately took off from home because of any plan to do anything bad to her. I took off from home that early to avoid traffic.

“When she was in my office, she was the one telling me to be free with her. I realised that I needed to lie down a little and did not want my shirt to be rumpled. When I pulled it off, she even told me not to mind her presence that since it was my office, I could do whatever I wanted.

“When we first got to the office, she lay on my chest and was even playing with my manhood. That was why I could not resist it. After we came back from seeing the woman who was supposed to help with her admission, she was about to go when I told her to give me a hug. It was that which now led to the actual sexual encounter.

“When I realised that I could not resist her, I had to tell her to let me put on a condom. The truth is that, while I was putting on a condom, she stood by and waited. I did not actually penetrate. When she was saying ‘it’s enough, it’s enough’ and complaining that her tummy had started hurting her, I stopped.”

Baruwa explained that Shola’s father had sent a cryptic text message to him (days later when he learnt of what happened to his daughter), saying that he had learnt of what he did to his daughter.

“I know I betrayed his trust but nobody would understand it was consensual. I would have reached out to him to beg him if I think it would solve the problem,” he said.

When told that Shola went through more than a week of excruciating abdominal pain, Baruwa explained that if Shola left him the day of the encounter with any sign of hurt, he would have reached out to her to find out how she was doing.

Two days after our correspondent spoke with Baruwa, he was arrested by the police and the case is being investigated at the Isokoko Police Division, Agege, Lagos.

The case has also been reported at the Office of the Public Defender under the Lagos State Ministry of Justice. The Director of the OPD, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, said the case would be followed to its logical conclusion.

Director of the Esther Child Rights Foundation, Esther Ogwu, a social worker handling the case, said when the case was first reported to her, the health of the girl was her immediate concern.

She said, “I had to refer them to the Mirabel Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Lagos so that she could get comprehensive treatment. This case is just another reason for girls and young women to be cautious of the issue of sexual assault.

“I believe this lecturer had been doing this in the past. It is necessary for girls to be aware and know what to do when in a potentially dangerous situation where they may be assaulted.

“I don’t expect him (the lecturer) to admit that he raped her. I knew he would say it was consensual, but I suspect that this is not the first time he would do such thing. Let the law take its course because we don’t know how many other girls are being saved because this case is coming out to the public.”

Baruwa was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, Lagos on Thursday. He has been remanded at the Kirikiri prison.

At times I weep for this country. Imagine the level of technological advancement Nigeria would've been if people like this was supported.
Last time I heard of him, it was reported he invented the world first automatic fire extinguisher that starts working at any slight feel of fire.

So unfortunate

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

The above is absolutely false. Mr Damian was not the first Nigerian to fabricate a working radio station in Nigeria. The credit goes to a graduate of the then Kwara state college of Technology, whose name i cannot readily remember, in 1976.

If you say, he was the first to do so using herbs, i cannot oppose that.

In the 80's i met Mr Damian at one or two trade fairs where he demonstrated a touch sensitive wireless microphone and some other interesting gadgets, whose mechanisms were rather opaque to some of us in the field.

As to your emotional outburst, Nigeria is where we deserve to be!
I Don't know why you tribe of jealousy, pain and anger can never appreciate any good thing outside your evil region?

In my opinion, the problem I find with the igbo people is not their intelligence, or brilliance, but they lack character, and character is more important than anything, let your yes be your yes, even if it doesn't look bright.. They are so en-grudged in self. I don't know any mbiase, but what I hear now is imo mbiase, what's my business with that, it's no longer igbo but now a tribe. before you know, it's no longer mbiase, but a family, it's no longer a family but a person.

They do not understand that a broom that's tied together is stronger, than a stick that's alone.

I v to drop this comment cos am honestly thrilled with this innovation which appears to be a bold expression to d Nig govt of d intrinsic ingenuity of d average Biafran. D app is just a master class, easy to download, free, good voice clarity and above all no need of an earpiece. D Nig govt owned NBC should hide dia faces in shame for causing this ridicule to d Buhari govt cos it was dia 'jamming' boast dat emboldened d Nnamdi Kalu n his team to go a step further and now Radio Biafra has become 'permanent' and can be listened to globally. Proudly 5% though.
I just downloaded the app, I can only say wow.
