hello
This is to draw the attention of the GTBank staffs monitoring this thread to another as they call it “system Glitch“ currently going on on their internet banking portal
the error is under the Airtime recharge section
Do take your time and fix this or we are going to initiate another round of action(s) against ypu and this will further point out the gross incompetence of ypur Tech team Thanks
by the way this is a copy of what i have already sent to card services

Hello sir,

If you were a service technician and someone sent this to you, I doubt you'd be able to help without recourse for more information. Could you please resend the email specifying exactly what you experienced, time it occurred, the transaction in question, error/system response and what exactly you expect resolution to be. It's like telling a shop owner, "Hey, one of your products in your warehouse has expired. Better replace it or else I'll call NAFDAC". You're more likely to get a result if you provide useful actionable information to whoever you sent the mail to.

e.g.

Dear XYZ company,

My account number is XXXXXXXXXX. I just tried to recharge my mobile number XXXXXXXX with ₦500 using your online banking portal around 2pm. After submitting the request, I got a system error prompt of "Transaction failed try again later". I was debited but I did not receive the airtime. Please reverse the debit or process my airtime request.

Dear Risi,

When we had dinner yesterday, I noticed your armpit is bushy. Please shave before our next meeting or wear long sleeve as the sight made me lose appetite and I don't like wasting food. grin grin grin

Risi is more likely to look presentable next time than if you had said "Risi, you made me lose appetite. Don't do it next time".

Now for all you GTB defenders, @mployer, @shakitibobo, @phony200 and co calling everybody that was affected a thief, please riddle (answer) me this: why did GTBANK just debited @d rate of 199/$ for a transaction I just carried out now? An FX outward transfer if as you all claim, that rate is below the rate the bank sourced the dollar? Or is this also an anomaly
And why, contrary to CBN guidelines is GTBANK charging above the maximum 1,500 naira stipulated by CBN as maximum charge for bank token?

OTT is directly from CBN so it's at CBN bid rate, Card transactions are at each bank's treasury rate and discretion. I am not calling and have never called you a thief. Have you lodged a formal complaint to your bank? Do that and get a complaint reference number. Once two weeks elapse and it's not resolved, escalate to customer protection at the CBN with the mail trail and relevant documentation to them for resolution. CBN will then write the bank directly and give them 7 days from acknowledgement of receipt to come up with their side of the story. Once CBN receives GTB's response, a decision is usually reached within 21 days which GTB will communicate to you. I've posted the due process for reporting bank related complaints on the thread. I'm sorry but online petitions or e-protests are not the way. All those are classified under potential reputational risk which any bank will move to quash or just address and ignore. I'm not a GT defender as you claim. Substitute GT for any other bank anywhere in the world and the response is still going to be the same.

Follow due process and let the CBN manage your complaints directly.

I have been following this thread since weekend, seriously, were you people thinking #199 to a $ was right at that point?. I don't think its morally right to take advantage of others mistake to benefit oneself. I remember a few NL members sounding out warning against this. I'm not supporting all the activities of our banks, especially in the area of exchange, but two wrong don't make a right. if only everyone can come together and challenge WHY every bank is charging almost twice the CBN official rate, but this ur case.........I doubt you will get far with it. you can always pay back what you owe gradually at your own time, they can't force you to pay, but not paying at all and abandoning your account might not be a good choice, I don't know how strong this BVN thing can be. God bless our struggle.

Here is a good place to start the complaint process per the 2011 CBN guidelines as stated on their website.

Summary

This is a Guide on how and where you can lodge a complaint against Financial Institutions regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria such as Commercial Banks, Microfinance Banks, Primary Mortgage Institutions and Discount Houses.

Contact Your Institution First: if you have a complaint against your bank, you MUST first report the complaint at the bank/branch where the issue originated and then allow 2 weeks (it might be less in some banks) for the issue to be resolved.

If Your Bank Fails To Resolve Your Complain: If after lodging your complaint your Bank still fails to engage you and resolve the complaint within 2 Weeks as provided for in the ATM HELP DESK Circular, you have the right to escalate your complaint to the Consumer Protection Department (CPD) of the CBN.

You can contact the CPD through the following channels:

E-mail: cpd@cbn.gov.ng
Letter: Director, Consumer Protection Department
Central Business District, Abuja

Your complaint should be clear and concise to avoid ambiguity. The Complaint letter (petition) should contain amongst other things the following:
• Name, Address, Contact Phone Number & E-mail of the Complainant;
• Name of your Financial Institution;
• Personal banking details (Do NOT include PIN & Passwords, pleasewink
• History/Date of the transaction in dispute;
• Amount claimed (if any);
• Attach relevant documents to support you claim and;
• Evidence to show that you have first lodged the complaint at your bank.

While I understand the grievances of those affected, I still stand by my initial thought. I got that same call over the weekend that GTB was doing 199 to the dollar. I recall telling the person not to be in a rush to make transactions until the situation was clearer. Fast forward to days later and there's the kerfuffle about banks and their injustices to customers. GTB could have done a better job in resolving the situation but if the customers had been informed that the excesses would be debited at a later date, most of them would withdraw all their funds to avoid the charges. Debit now, explain later crude as it may have been is messy yet effective. So the outcry isn't undeserved. This however should not detract from the fact that all transactions were legitimate and in exigent circumstances, the bank reserves the right to recoup unsettled balances from the customer no matter how unpleasant it is 99.9999% of the time.

Tia6900 made a point about transaction dates and settlement dates, that is one of the several factors that can determine how much you're billed for an international currency transactions. The treasury dept also determines rates. I've seen similar situations like these go to the CBN for mediation and more times than I can count, the CBN rules in favour of the banks who then out of goodwill sometimes refunds the customer on a case-by-case basis. I do not believe the incident was a deliberate attempt to defraud customers. I also do not believe that GTB should bear the brunt of the difference on transactions settled by customers during the period. The eventual rate of 299 charged is within +/-₦50 of other banks' rates, I don't see their customers starting bonfires. I don't have anything to gain by playing devil's advocate but those of the opinion that no matter the reasons for the 199 charge the bank should refrain from resolution should take a good look at themselves and what they would do if this were a private business and not the universally disdained GTBank.

Hopefully, the public furore would push the CBN to further review the situation with GTB. I don't envisage GT being forced to bear the losses neither do I envisage GTB doing a social service and absorbing the losses voluntarily. Either way, it will definitely not result in a class action lawsuit. I'm curious to see what the eventual resolution would be considering the peculiarities of the situation.

bdavis, mavinc4u et al, more power to your struggle. I wish you all the best.

Cue the insults...

mavinc4u:

Your comparison does not make sense. If a bank should have such an issue and did not disconnect their cards as a maintenance issue then it means their customer's money is not safe with them.

The funds you were debited initially came from your account. Are you telling me that if your card was not restricted to a daily/monthly limit, you would have gone on to spend $10,000 just because the rate was showing ₦199? The ATM withdrawal comparison is the same. If you have ₦5,000 in your account and go ahead to withdraw ₦5000 and you notice your balance is still ₦5,000, then you try another 5k and it goes, then 20k and it goes through again, will you complain when you find your account in -₦30,000 when the error is rectified?

Say you go to your neighbourhood grocery store and got charged lower than your purchase amount on Monday, and then you go back on tuesday and try to check out and you notice you were debited the total of Tuesday's shopping and the difference from the computer error on Monday, would you think you have grounds for a fraud argument because according to you, since they had a maintenance issue, they have to bear the loss and you have to bear the "miraculous provision offering"? No Ma'am, I disagree.

The analogy is sound. Denial is futile.

Y'all claimed to be misled. Did GT send you an email and advertise to you that they were running a dollar promo? 50% off all Intl purchases? You saw an opportunity and you used it! Why are you all crying wolf? I'd like one person to take 2 minutes to read the TERMS AND CONDITIONS of GTB per transactions on your account. There is absolutely no basis for a lawsuit, even a simple customer service complaint. Did GTB steal your money? No! Na una dey go bank wey teller miscount money give una dey give testimony say God don bless you. No! It is not a blessing, it was an anomaly which the bank moved to correct once it was noticed. I've seen COT charges that were 3 years old recovered on accounts. Did a customer step up to say, Oh GTB, please you have not charged your COT for last month? Oh GTB, something is wrong with your system, I noticed rates are lower than usual. In case you don't know, same thing applies to wrong postings on your account. If money is wrongly paid to your account, go ahead and withdraw it and spend it all and see if you won't be sued for fraud.

By all means, please keep signing and screaming GT scam and see what comes out of it. grin grin grin grin grin grin

Jokers, all of you. One has to be a fool and/or a thief to believe a bank would sell AUTONOMOUS dollars at a price BELOW interbank rates. As if that's not enough, you all went ahead to make bigger than usual purchases because you wanted to take advantage of an error on the part of the bank.

Question: If over the weekend, GTB has issues with the ATM system and withdrawals were not reflecting on your balance, so you mean people like you would go ahead and keep withdrawing your daily limits on all your cards and in your right mind conclude that since the bank made an error, your christmas has come early? You know what is right, you know the rate GT charges for card transactions. Why does it shock you to be charged the correct amount The hilarity is just too much.

I don't owe you explanations bro. Look away. tongue

I'm not asking for explanation but it's only fair to your accuser that you provide sufficient reason for me to be wary of doing business with him or any other person. If you go to the hospital claiming Ebola, won't the nurse first take your temperature before they lock you away in quarantine? When Tuma asked about At&T, you shared the evidence without prompting or hesitation. I am only asking that you do the same before levying someone else as a criminal pariah. It smacks of sour grapes when baseless accusations are not supported by a detailed account of your experience and evidence. Please do that. Even a child if told not to play with another man's kid will ask why. If Olamii stole your babe, tell us. No shame, we will help you put advert on blackplanet.com
