I don't knw why ppl don't read and just start talking. U shud asking are other health workers not on strike. Is simple. The Drs fight for them too. Have u asked ursef why only in Nigeria. Doctors are very greedy even while the earn highest in the health sector. Why are nurses, lab scientists, Pharmacists, etc not on strike? Does it mean FG have solved all their problems? FG does not care but doctors also don't care. I wonder if soldiers who pay supreme price on a repeat and consistently goes on strike like this. No should ever compare the Soldiers' Frontline and doctors' Frontline again, they are not same.

An OPEN LETTER To The Honorable Minister Of Health Of The Federal Republic Of Nigeria

Dear Honorable Minister,

I bring you very warm greetings from my family and all men of good will who wish you well in office and who hope that you would leave your feet marks on the sands of time in the Federal Ministry of Health when this job comes to an end.

I am writing to you through this medium, not only as a concerned Medical Doctor ( an Elder for that matter) but also because I am a Past President of NARD - the Association currently on strike.

I do not want to bore you with the history of the Nigerian health sector and how little progress we have made since 1960 because I know that in your exalted position as the Honorable Minister of Health, you are already conversant with that history.

I also do not want to bore you with the struggles embarked by the NARD since 1982 to better the lot of Nigerian Health Sector and the healthcare manpower.

What has ignited the fire in me to write you is the pronouncement made on National Television by your very good self threatening to sack all and any of the striking Medical Doctors if they do not go back to work by Wednesday the 17th day of June 2020.

Honorable Minister
The path you are threading now is one which many of your predecessors trod in times past and it did not yield any fruits at all.

It's an old weather beaten path which has neither generated good will nor solved any problems, rather it had always created more problems.

I am certainly sure that the Honorable Minister knows very well that NARD is the fulcrum of health care service delivery in Nigeria and whatever will affect its membership would surely derail any plans at improving the health care sector which your good office has envisaged in this your time.

And so, if NARD is on strike, it only means that she has explored all avenues at peacefully reconciling the differences between her and the Government of President Muhammadu Buhari and as the Honorable Minister of Health, your responsibility is to protect the interest of the Government and the Health care workers. So when you issue a threat of sack on the Doctors, it is akin to reading the riot act and that is only practicable in a Military setting. We are practicing a civilian democracy (I hope we are) and such approaches at commanding and threatening are tools that will always fail because they negate the rights of the individuals to express themselves freely.

COVID - 19 happened on Nigeria and the Government entered into an MOU to ensure that Medical Doctors and other health care workers are adequately protected. Information at my disposal has it that up until now, the hazard allowance is yet to be paid (3 months after the MOU was signed), the PPE is yet to be made universally available and accessible, the Life and accident insurance scheme is yet to be activated and the people talked and shouted so much that their voices became hoarse and then they decided to withdraw their services as that is the only tool they have; what do we have as the first reaction - a threat to sack!

As I write, more than 150 Medical Doctors excluding other health care workers have tested positive to the corona virus and quite a number has died.

As an Elder, I took a long look at the matter and decided to write you to offer a piece of advise which though is completely unsolicited for. And I am doing this because my people say that "An Elder does not sit at home and watch a she-goat deliver with ropes round her neck"

I want to advise that the Honorable Minister kindly withdraws the threat to sack Resident Doctors, engage them in a dialogue through extraordinary means and find a quick solution to the reasons why they went on strike in the first place.

That to me is what can help this matter at this stage

What have they done to deserve this. Sometimes I don't really understand this FG. U expect them to see patients with ordinary masks and u that don't see wear N95masks. U in government is paid allowance for newspaper and the doctors are pleading for hazard allowance. U get mind to even cut down the health budget just to provide billions for the control of pests in the north and another 27 billion for renovation of a house in abj. Now is time to stop this nonsense. This government needs common sense I swear. If I am the one, they won't see my leg in the hospital.

Saying IPPIS doesn't recognise allowances is a fat lie. The problem ASUU is facing is that members haven't been cleared to be entitled to those allowances by the assigned unit which can be sorted out easily.
Doctors, nurses and other health workers are paid different allowances on the IPPIS platform.
Also, u don't blame IPPIS for the poor salaries of lecturers, let the union leaders meet the govt for salary negotiations. All civil servants are subjected to full taxation and lecturers mustn't be left out, so their tax deductions must be optimized as it has been suboptimal.

Guy the lecturers are becoming official thieves. Allowances are paid with ippis not just the basic. Get it straight. Why are u lying to the poor masses.

The IPPIS doesn't have any package for payment of allowances to lecturers. Therefore, It's only the basic salaries they now earn. So how does federal government expect them to call off the strike and diligently work when they are forcefully enrolled into IPPIS and striping them of some allowances that make their salaries tangible.


BEFORE YOU CRITICISE THE LECTURERS TAKE A LOOK AT THIS;

Take home salary for lecturers after IPPIS deduction without allowances:
PhD LII is #130,000
PhD LI is #163,000 plus min. 3 years post PhD
Senior Lecturer #235,000 plus min. 6years post PhD
Professor ��‍� #345,000 plus min. 10 years post PhD
Senior Professor ��‍� #423,000....
Minimum of 3years gap with hard work. Many spend as high as 5years before they can move up the ladder of promotions.

REMEMBER
From these peanuts of a pay;
They teach a crowd for a class
They supervise multitudes
They attend conferences from their pockets
They attend seminars from this peanuts
They write and publish articles in reputable journals (enquire the cost of publishing).....etc
They undergo rigorous stress to carry out research.
They spend minimum of 4 years in BSc
They spend minimum of 2 years in MSc
They spend minimum of 3 years in PhD (in Nigeria is near impossible they even spend upto 5 years and above).

Consider their rigours, the pain, the emotional trauma, physical drain, brain drain, intellectual drain they go through just to be qualified for their job specification...

I think our Lecturers work like elephants and earn like ants, they deserve a better pay or renumeration.

In terms of welfare:
You know that 50% of your lecturers don't have good offices/furnitures.
Most lecturers lack good working environment.
Most lecturers handle/teach a crowd of students yet they still try to deliver lectures in such environment (instead of the normal 30-50 students class size).
Most Lecturers supervise projects at their expense.
You want his best yet you deny him the best.

When you compare this salary with those of other Federal Govt agencies it's very very ridiculous.
If you compare it with Universities abroad then Nigeria �� salary scale for lecturers is infinitesimally small.

Before you criticise them;
First put yourself in their shoes.
Could you have studied to PhD just to earn #130,000?
Could you have invested the better part of your life upto Prof just to earn #345,000?
Think! They may not have been the best they should yet they are among the best in the world especially if they are giving the right environment to practice.

Before you criticise ASUU/Lecturers think.
Except you are happy with the state of the university system.
