Main article: Ijoid languages
The Ijaw speak nine closely-related Niger-Congo languages, all of which belong to the Ijoid branch of the Niger-Congo tree. The primary division between the Ijo languages is that between Eastern Ijo and Western Ijo, the most important of the former group of languages being Izon, which is spoken by about four million people. There are two prominent groupings of this language. The first group is nominally termed "Western" or "Central" Ijaw or Izon, and consists of "Western" Ijaw speakers (Ekeremo-Sagbama(Mein), Bassan, Apoi, Arogbo, Bumo, Kabuowei, Ogboin, Tarakiri, etc variety) as well Kolokuma-Opokuma (Yenagoa and the vicinity). Nembe-Brass and Akassa (Akaha) dialects are referred to as "Ijo South-East". These groups, since 1996, mainly constitutes Bayelsa State, but spills over to Delta, Edo and Ondo States. Biseni and Okodia dialect are termded "Inland" Ijo The other major group is Kalabari. Kalabari is an "Eastern" Ijaw language but the term "Eastern Ijaw" is not the normal nomenclature. Kalabari is the name one of the clans of the Ijaws that reside on the eastern side of the Niger-Delta (Abonnema, Buguma, Bakana, Degema etc who form a major group in Rivers State, hence their involvement in the fight for greater oil control. Other "Eastern" Ijaw clans are the Okrika, Ibani (the natives of Bonny, Finima and Opobo) and Nkoroo. They are neighbours to the Kalabari in present day Rivers State of Nigeria.

Other related Ijo sub-groups which have distinct linguistic relations but very close blood (i.e genetic), cultural and territorial homogenity with the rest of the Ijaw are Epie-Atisa clan, Engenni people and Udekama (which speak Delta Edoid Languages). Others are Ogbia clan, Bukuma, Abuloma (Obulom) and Andoni (which speak Delta Cross languages).

It was discovered in the 1980s that a nearly-extinct Berbice Creole Dutch, spoken in Guyana, is based on Ijo lexicon and grammar. Its nearest relative seems to be Eastern Ijo, most likely Kalabari (Kouwenberg 1994).

NDLEA arrests seven drug traffickers
By Sunday Aborisade
Published: Tuesday, 18 Sep 2007
The Murtala Mohammed International Airport command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested seven drug peddlers with hard drugs in the last one week.

This was contained in a statement by the Public Affairs Officer of the agency, Mr. Ofoyeju Mitchell, on Monday.

Mitchell said one of the suspects, Innocent Onwusi, 39, who resides at 25, Ezinifite Street, Onitsha, Anambra State, swallowed 107 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.854 kilogrammes.

The NDLEA image maker described the substance swallowed by Onwusi as one of the largest quantities ingested in recent times.

According to him, “He (Onwusi) was arrested on September 12, 2007 while boarding a KLM flight to Amsterdam.

“He is a native of Iwollo village, Eziagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, ”

According to Mitchell, the suspect said, “The customs seized my four container-load of used tyres in Port Harcourt.

“That was how I lost all my money and my friends in Amsterdam convinced me into carrying drugs.”

Another suspect, Godwin Utubor, 28, was arrested on September 13, 2007 for ingesting 83 wraps of cocaine, weighing 1.387 kilogrammes while attempting to board an Iberia flight to Spain.

He allegedly fell for drug barons who promised to offer him 3,600 Euro to smuggle cocaine to Spain.

Ojiako Anthony Uchechukwu, 40, was also arrested last week Monday during the screening of passengers on Alitalia flight from Lagos to Milan with 1.375 kilogrammes.

The NDLEA spokesperson said Uchechukwu had been working in Italy as a labourer since 2000.

He said, “He is an indigene of Amucha town, Amucha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

“He is on vacation in Nigeria but accepted to carry drugs while going back to Milan because of 3,500 Euro, easy money which he would have made.

“Similarly, Chika Christian Tomlo, 29 years, was arrested on September 5, 2007 with 1.3 kilogrammes of cocaine in his stomach.

“He was to travel to Paris on Air France but his dream of having 5,000 Euro which he was promised was cut short following his arrest.”

“Chika is a native of Igwurta, Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers State.

“However, one Austine Nnayere was caught while attempting to send 2 kilogrammes of Indian hemp to Spain on September 2, 2007. Augustine hails from Ebenator-Ekwe town in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.

“The MMIA command also said it foiled an attempt by one Nzubechukwu Akagbobi 22 years of No. 12, Ola-Ayeni Street Computer village Ikeja, Lagos to export 25 grammes of Indian hemp concealed inside hand set chargers to China.

Uzubechukwu who was accompanied by Kelechi Ibemeka were arrested on Saturday September 15, 2007 by cargo screening officers at the Airport. The suspects will soon be charged to court.
