THERE was pandemonium in the commercial city of Aba and Umuahia, the Abia State capital yesterday as some youths chased women who wore trousers about and attempted to tear their wears on the streets.

But in a swift reaction, the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Mercy Orji condemned the action of the youths, insisting that nobody should take the laws into his hands. The state government has also issued a statement on the matter describing as illegal harassment of the females on trousers.

It was not clear at press time what caused the problem, but passers-by suddenly saw some youths chasing girls on trousers on the streets and in some cases forced them to provided money with which the youth bought skirts from nearby stores and gave them to the girls to change into.

Many females who traveled to the state from other parts of the country were taken unawares and had to remain in the vehicles that brought them to the two towns. Some security operatives at some check points also seized the opportunity to extort money from some of the girls before allowing them to go.

Mrs Orji who was worried by the development urged the youths to stop harassing people.

Nigeria: Nigeria, a Haven for Hard Drugs - George Bush

Leadership (Abuja)

President of the United States, Mr George Bush, has listed Nigeria and 19 other countries as either major illicit drug transit or major producing countries, just as he called on the Nigerian authorities to "re-double their efforts to use the frequent arrest of street criminals and couriers to identify and prosecute major drug traffickers."

The American leader, however, commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the progress the two agencies made in their fight against drug trafficking and money laundering activities.

"Nigeria has made progress on many narcotics control and anti-money laundering benchmarks," Bush said in his Presidential Report entitled, "Major List."

"The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has seized millions in the proceeds of crime and its anti-money laundering efforts have been successful," he stated.

Bush identified the major drug-transit or major illicit drug- producing countries as Afghanistan, The Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Burma, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Guatemala.

Others are Haiti, India, Jamaica, Laos, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela.

But he said Nigeria "is cooperating with the international community to improve its efforts against money laundering even more."

Highlights of the report stated that Bush had already authorised the U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, to submit the report to the U.S.

It contained "Presidential Determinations of the countries that have failed demonstrably to make substantial efforts during the previous 12 months to adhere to international counter narcotics agreements'."

The Presidential Determinations required the American president to consider each country's performance in areas such as reducing illicit cultivation, interdiction, law enforcement cooperation and extradition.

It also took note of efforts to prevent and punish public corruption that facilitates drug trafficking or impedes drug-related prosecutions

A woman in Ekiti State has confessed that she offered her one and half year old boy for money making rituals and dumped him in a well to die after she was brainwashed by a fake prophet.

The baby, Abdulahi Wasiu who was declared missing last Sunday was later on Tuesday found dead in a well where her mother, Opeyemi Wasiu was said to have dumped him .

The Police Post at the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti Palace witnessed large crowd that came to catch a glimpse of the evil mother who was made to carry the corpse of her baby on her head and dance.

Confessing her sins, Opeyemi said she did not know the fake prophet from Adam but the first day she met him, the man expressed pity over her condition and promised to help her to amass wealth if she was willing after which a deal was struck for her to visit the man at Ori Apata area of Ado Ekiti, a notorious place for makeshift churches.

Opeyemi said the man urged her to produce the sperm of her baby which would be used for the money making rituals but if the baby could not produce it then she should allow him to make “holy” love with her so that his own semen would be used, which she agreed on. She confessed that on two different occasions, the “holyman” committed adultery with her and later swindled her of sum amount of money while promising that the money would come from hundred thousand naira.

The prophet, she said, prepared different concoction which he put into her mouth and that of her innocent baby but the next day, the little child was declared missing. She denied knowledge of the whereabouts of her son until he was found dead in a well in Ita-Ekun area of Ado-Ekiti.

She said the “holyman” also demanded for palm oil, bitter kola and coconut. But her husband,Wasiu Bilawu, a butcher, told Daily Sun that in spite of the scandal he still trusts and loves her but only felt disappointed when he heard that she was flirting around with the prophet.
A police officer at the Police Post (name withheld) said that the man was ignorant of his wife’s illicit affair and was the person who reported the incident to the police.
