Rapist, three others arrested in Enugu By Adelani Adepegba, Enugu The Police in Enugu State on Friday confirmed the arrest of four armed robbery suspects, including a self-confessed rapist. The suspects, Ogbonna Ede, Chukwunyere Okafor, Ejike Nwodo, and Tochukwu, were arrested in different parts of Enugu. Abattam Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Mike Abattam, said the suspects robbed a woman of her handbag at gunpoint. One of the suspects, Okafor denied being involved in armed robbery. He explained that he was arrested for raping a neighbour’s girlfriend. He said that he had gone to buy a wrap of cocaine at Denton Street, Enugu but the girl refused to sell it to him. He said, “I was never involved in armed robbery. The pistol being exhibited was not from me. What happened was that I went to buy cocaine from my dealer, but he was not at home. His girlfriend refused to sell to me, and I raped her because she provoked me.” Tochukwu, a carpenter, admitted selling hemp but he denied being an armed robber. He said detectives were also on the heels of a robbery syndicate which engaged some police officers in a gun duel last week. He said the gang had operated with motorcycles and robbed a victim of N250,000. He said despite the fact that the robbers were wounded, they ran away, abandoning a locally made pistol. He therefore called on the public to report anyone with bullet wounds to the nearest police station. http://nigeriaworld.com/cgi-bin/axs/ax.pl?http://odili.net/news/source/2007/sep/17/410.html |

South Korea hunts for missing Nigerian officials By Agency Reporter The South Korean Government has mounted a search for 14 unnamed Nigerian government officials who disappeared during an official visit to the Asian nation two months ago. Nigeria’s Charge d’Affaires in the Republic of Korea, Babagana Wakil, who made known the development, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Seoul that of the 21-man delegation on the official trip, only seven returned home. Wakil urged the Federal Government to evolve measures to prevent the defection of Nigerians, especially government officials. He said both the Nigerian Embassy and the Korean authorities were getting worried about the increasing rate of defection of Nigerians on official visits to South Korea. “But the most worrisome is that most of those who defected are big people. I still have their list here. The authorities here in Korea are still looking for them and the embassy is giving the necessary support in the effort to track them,” Wakil said. According to him, the defectors took advantage of the fact that the police do not harass illegal foreigners. “You may be in this country for years without valid papers and may not be disturbed by the police provided you don’t commit any crime,” Wakil said. He said the embassy was also worried about the high rate of involvement of Nigerians in crime. Wakil said that about two weeks ago, a Nigerian was arrested in Seoul for assaulting a Canadian lady. He said Nigerians were known for credit card scams, lamenting that the situation was giving the country a bad name http://nigeriaworld.com/cgi-bin/axs/ax.pl?http://odili.net/news/source/2007/sep/15/417.html |
Imo police parade 44 suspects for robbery By Fidelis Soriwei, Owerri The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, Mr. Donald Iroham, on Friday paraded 44 suspects for robbery, pipeline vandalisation and murder. Iroham, who spoke with newsmen in Owerri, said his men had also recovered 20 stolen vehicles in the state. Iroham said that while some of the recovered vehicles had been released to the owners, some were still in the custody of the police. He urged members of the public to come to the command to identify and collect the vehicles. He gave the brand and number of the cars as Toyota Hilux open van, Imo 249 AAA; Toyota Land Cruiser, Lagos BJ 560 APP; Mitsubishi L300, Lagos XG 600KRD; Toyota Corolla, DY 383 PHC; and Volvo 24 GLE, Lagos AL 418 JJJ. He said police detectives had also recovered 12 locally made guns and three live cartridges from the suspects. Most of the suspects were arrested along Aba-Owerri Road, which has become notorious for robbery in the past few months. He also said that 15 of the suspects who were being investigated for pipeline vandalisation were apprehended at the oil-producing area in Ohaji/Egbema local government. The commissioner also confirmed the arrest of one Ifesinachi (surname withheld), in connection with the murder of a United States-based businesswoman, Mrs. Bibian Nwaokoyi, at Umuna in Onuimo Local Government Area. He said that the suspect had confessed that the murder was carried out with the connivance of three fleeing suspects. The suspects are Uchenna, Chima and Nwajioba. Meanwhile, a cleric of the Anglican Church, Mr. Paul Nwozuzu, has donated his one month’s salary to the command to aid police operations in the state. He said that although the amount was small, he believed that it could help the police do their job and to discourage extortion on the highways. http://nigeriaworld.com/cgi-bin/axs/ax.pl?http://odili.net/news/source/2007/sep/17/411.html |

Breaking News : Man Sets Son Ablaze Over Watchcraft Posted by admin on 2007/5/4 16:22:14 (77 reads) By Emma Una/Calabar A middle aged man identified as Victor Friday Usuk of Afagha Uqua in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has set his 10-year-old son, Jeremiah Victor Usuk, ablaze for allegedly bewitching him. P.M.News gathered that the man poured petrol on his son, struck a match and set him ablaze after a prophetess in his church, Prophetess Grace, prophesied that his failure in business and joblessness were caused by his son. Jeremiah, who sustained third degree burns and narrowly survived the trial by ordeal, is still nursing the severe injuries. The boy told P.M.News that Prophetess Grace wanted to extract more “confession” from him by severely beating him in the presence of his father and mother. The boy has a sister named Victoria, who was also accused of witchcraft. She was said to have been subjected to several hours of deliverance by the prophetess. According to Mr. Usuk, the boy’s father, Jeremiah was too deep in the act “such that bringing him out of the witchcraft world required physical torture.” On why Victoria was not set ablaze, Mr. Usuk said the girl is now certified free from witchcraft by Prophetess Grace after she had gone for deliverance in the church several times. Jeremiah, a primary three pupil in Aunty Mercy Primary School, Afagha Ukwa, Akwa Ibom State, said: “If I were into witchcraft, I would have made sure everyone in the family becomes a member so that this torture will not take place.” He said his problem started when his father’s business started collapsing. His father, he said, became withdrawn and when his offshore job was also taken and his vehicle broke down, he allegedly accused Jerry and Victoria as those responsible for his misfortune. Reacting to the incident, Pastor of the church, Rev. Peters said he believes that witchcraft was responsible for the plight of Victor Usuk, but denied that his wife’s revelation made Victor to set his son ablaze. “Society sometimes pretends that witchcraft does not exist but it is the cause of the problems of many people,” he said. |
