Online retailer, Jumia, has raised $35 million in fresh funding to expand its domestic market and move into a new 90,000 square foot warehouse in Lagos. The funding, secured from Millicom, will be shared between Jumia and its partners Kaymu, Vamido and Hellofood. Jumia, which clocked one year over the weekend, is the fourth most visited website in the country. It has served 500,000 customers in the country from inception to date. Raphael Afaedor, co-founder of Jumia said the firm offers youth in the country great employment opportunities. “We started with three employees building up an e-commerce platform in Nigeria,” he said. “Now, we have more than 500 employees and offer Nigerian’s youth great opportunities to work in one of the leading e-commerce companies in Africa. “Jumia delivers the widest range of products in the country and our new warehouse allows us to even grow further. We focus every day on delivering a fantastic shopping experience for our customers – fast, secure and stress-free.” Jumia announced a new partnership with Mastercard, which will enable it to use the company’s Internet Gateway Service to make credit card payments safer and easier for its users. The online retailer is also entering exclusive partnerships with high-profile technology companies such as Dell, Intel and Nokia, which will give the retailer access to exclusive products and some knock-down prices. Besides Nigeria, Jumia is also active in Egypt and Morocco, and it’s likely that expansion will continue with this fresh injection of funding. iROKOtv, the world’s largest online distributor of Nigerian movies with a catalogue of over 5,000 titles, is launching a new DVD collection of Nigerian movies. The online movie streaming site hopes to meet the demands of millions of Nigerian movie fans with its entry into the country’s DVD market. Jason Njoku, the firm’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) noted that a majority of Nollywood fans watch the films on DVDs. “iROKOtv revolutionised the video-on-demand (VOD) industry for African entertainment when we launched, bringing thousands of movies online to Nollywood lovers around the world,” he said. “In a short space of time, we were able to connect with the online African community but, in reality, the majority of Nollywood fans are offline and watch Nollywood on DVDs. “Access is the immediate challenge for VOD companies here. Until Africa comes online, DVDs will continue to be the primary platform to consume content, which is why iROKOtv has now entered the DVD market.” Nollywood (the popular term for Nigeria’s mainstream movie industry) produces about 2000 movies a year. iROKOtv has selected ten of the very best quality movies to be distributed on DVD. “They are now on sale in Jo’burg markets including Soweto, Kempton Park, Rosettenville and Randburg,” the company said. “This is the first time iROKOtv DVDs will be sold in a beautifully designed and packaged format with high quality standards and will cost no more than R30.” http://telegraphng.com/2013/06/irokotv-launches-nollywood-dvd/ |

Nigerian boxer, Bashiru Lawrence Ali, popularly known as Bash Ali, caused a stir on Thursday in Abuja as he accosted President Goodluck Jonathan and the Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, in a bid to challenge for the world cruiser-weight title in Nigeria. Ali, 57, is seeking to become the oldest man to hold a world boxing title defence. He had earlier taken his campaign to have his defence staged in Nigeria to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters in Abuja on May 20, but said he was not allowed in. On Thursday, he jostled to get an audience with President Jonathan, who was at the Abuja National Stadium to inaugurate ‘Rhythm ‘N’ Play, a campaign to get all Nigerian youths engaged in sporting activities. Ali scuffled with the president’s aides, which duly got the attention of Jonathan. After having been allowed to approach the president, and after stating his mission, Jonathan directed that the boxer see the Minister of Sports for further discussion on the matter.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJCgDr6YHJE http://telegraphng.com/2013/06/bash-ali-bashed-by-ministers-security-detail/ |
A Google report titled. ‘Impact of the Internet in Africa’ suggests that 25 percent of rural dwellers in Nigeria have no access to up-to-date communication tools. The report featured the effect of the Internet in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal. It indicated that only 46 percent of ministries, departments and agencies in the country had active websites while the national government itself lacked a website. The report stated that despite the achievement recorded in the Nigerian telecommunication industry in the past 12 years, and the country’s strong international bandwidth, weak domestic coverage and last-mile connectivity suggested a relatively low performance in internet infrastructure. Speaking at the report launch, Google Nigeria Policy Manager Titi Akinsanmi said that while the number of internet users in the country continue to rise yearly, there was a need to be more informed on how policymakers and investors should capitalise on the potential of the Internet. The Federal Minister of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson, who was also at the launch, said that the Federal Government planned five-fold increase in broadband penetration in the next 5 years. Of the four countries covered in the study, Nigeria shows the greatest potential in using the Internet to promote governance, enhance businesses and boost the economy. It added that continuous investment in core infrastructure and the rapid implementation of the broadband plan would positively impact on economic growth and employment. Nigeria presently has the highest number of internet users in Africa with about 48.4 percent. http://telegraphng.com/2013/06/nigeria-25-percent-lack-access-to-modern-communication-says-google-report/ |
Two medical experts, on Friday, advised the public to use WaterGuard product to treat and purify their drinking water to prevent the spread of typhoid fever. The experts said that contaminated water was one of the major sources of transmitting the disease. WaterGuard is a chlorine-based water treatment system that purifies water. Austin Nweke, a general physician, said that the use of the product “reduces the risk of becoming sick and contracting typhoid fever due to drinking of dirty water.’’ Nweke said that typhoid fever was common in less-industrialised countries like Nigeria where unsafe drinking water, inadequate sewage disposal and flooding were rampant. “We have leakages of pipes everywhere and it allows dirt from drains to enter the pipes and water is likely to be contaminated with sewage and germs,” he said. “You can get typhoid fever if Salmonella Typhi bacteria get into the water you use for drinking or washing food. Once the bacteria enter the person’s body, they multiply and spread from the intestines into the bloodstream and the body reacts with fever and other signs.” Nweke said that the symptoms include high fever, headache, constipation or diarrhoea, rose-coloured spots on the chest area and enlarged spleen and liver. He, however, advised that regular intake of clean water, good hygiene and sanitation would prevent the spread of typhoid fever. Another general physician, Chinenye Aforka, called for health education about personal hygiene in respect of hand-washing after toilet use and before food preparation. Aforka added that proper sanitation systems, provision of a safe water supply, adequate sewage disposal and use of WaterGuard to chlorinate water were the best ways of preventing typhoid. “Chlorine purifies water and kills off any water-borne pathogens and micro-organisms in the water,” she said. http://telegraphng.com/2013/06/experts-advise-nigerians-to-tackle-typhoid-with-waterguard/ |
Newcastle United and Sunderland look set to take their fierce rivalry to another level after reports emerged from Italy that both rival clubs are interested in securing the signature of Nigerian midfielder Joel Obi. The 22-year-old Inter Milan player broke into the Nerazzurri first team three seasons ago but saw limited playing time last season while recovering from a major injury which also kept him out of Nigeria’s successful campaign at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. With the appointment of Walter Mazzarri as the new helmsman of the Italian Serie A side, following the sacking of Andrea Stramaccioni, who was Obi’s coach right from his days in the Inter Milan youth side, the Nigerian’s chances of playing regular first-team football this upcoming season appear not so bright under the former Napoli boss. As a result reports from the Italian peninsula suggest that Inter are looking to offload the left-sided midfielder who has appeared 54 times for the Nerazzurri and seven times for the Nigerian national team, with Tyne and Wear rivals Newcastle and Sunderland suggested as possible suitors. The Nigerian may not come on the cheap though as, according to TransferMarkt.com, he is valued at £6 million, although as he is recovering from injury he may cost much less. However, regardless of the speculation over his future, Obi could yet remain at Inter for the coming season if he can prove to Mazzarri during pre-season that he has a role to play for the 18-time champions of the Italian top flight division. http://telegraphng.com/2013/06/newcastle-sunderland-show-interest-in-joel-obi/ |
Five days to the 20th anniversary of the controversial June 12, 1993 elections, one of the late MKO Abiola’s widows has said she will contest the Lagos State governorship elections in 2015. Chief Mrs. Modupe Onitiri-Abiola who disclosed this, on Friday, said her motive was borne out of her personal desire to assist in the eradication of poverty from the state. “There should be no poverty in this state or in this country. There is so much poverty on the ground and the situation is extremely terrible, worse than what we thought it was at that time, but, I am trying to look at what exactly is in the interest, actually, true interest of the people,” she said. “What I am trying to do now is eradication of poverty and I know once you remove poverty, you remove everything and for you to be able to remove poverty, you need to have so many programmes.” Onitiri-Abiola, who declined to reveal the party platform on which she intends to contest, emphasised how closely she worked with her late husband towards the actualisation of the June 12, 1993 presidential election polls annulled by the then military head of state, General Ibrahim Babangida. She said it was imperative for the country to start practising true democracy at all levels of government in order to curtail the outcry of Nigerians while she promised to make poverty eradication the focal point of her government if she triumphs. A human rights activist, Chidi Odinkalu, has criticised some provisions of the recently passed same-sex marriage bill by the National Assembly, saying they stand the chance of ending up targeting families who publicly display affection. If implemented as presently structured, the new bill’s criminalising of public show of affection by people of the same sex may end up indicting family members and relatives who may publicly display affection, Odinkalu the Chairman of the Human Rights Commission, said on Thursday. Super Eagles’ Captain, Joseph Yobo looks set to make a return to the English Premier League. According to some reports in Turkey, newly promoted Cardiff City are lining up a move for the former Everton defender, who is reportedly far from happy at Turkish giants Fenerbahce, who missed out on the Super Lig title to Istanbul rivals Galatasaray last month. Since the season ended on May 19, coach Aykut Kocaman has left the club and the 32- year-old centre back is believed to be unhappy with the departure. In addition, Fenerbahce recently completed the £5million signing of Portuguese defender Bruno Alves from Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg, and as a result Turkish newspaper Fanatik reported that Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay’s recruitment team are considering a move for the experienced star who spent nine years at Everton under David Moyes. The fact that the Turkish Football Federation now only permits six foreign players to take the field at one time in league matches means that the man whose international career with Nigeria also looks in doubt could be available on a cut-price deal. Yobo, who signed for Fenerbahce for £2m last summer, is Nigeria’s most-capped player having appeared 95 times for the Super Eagles in a 12-year career. And it is that kind of experience that Mackay has claimed he is looking for in his summer recruits as the Bluebirds get set for their first ever campaign in the English top flight division. While not commenting specifically on Yobo, Mackay, speaking from his holiday in Crete, said: “Our recruitment department is in a very busy period right now working through things. Me and (Cardiff manager) Iain Moody are in touch two or three times a day. “He’s beavering away. http://telegraphng.com/2013/06/england-return-beckons-for-yobo/ |

Two common painkillers, ibuprofen and diclofenac, can slightly increase the risk of heart problems if taken in high doses for a long time, data suggests. People with severe arthritis often take the drugs, which also calm inflammation, to go about daily life, reports the BBC. The researchers said some patients would deem the risk acceptable, but they should be given the choice. A study, published in the Lancet, showed the drugs posed even greater risks for smokers and the overweight. More here>>> http://telegraphng.com/2013/06/painkillers-can-cause-heart-problems/ |
The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, in Enugu State, has explained that its budget of N300 million for the installation of a new bishop includes the cost of completing some ongoing capital projects. The Director of Social Communications in the diocese, Rev. Fr. Chuma Nnamene, said on Thursday that the projects included the St. Theresa Cathedral, Nsukka, where the ceremony would take place. “We are also reconstructing two residences for our Emeritus Bishop Francis Okobo and the new one to be installed, Monsignor Godfrey Onah,’’ Nnamene said. He said that the buildings needed to be refurbished because they were currently not in good shape. The director explained that the church was not ostentatious in its way of doing things, adding that the new bishop was so modest that he would not allow a lavish ceremony on his behalf. Nnamene said the church was aware of the level of poverty in the diocese and the country at large and could not spend such an amount just on the installation. http://telegraphng.com/2013/06/church-denies-spending-n300m-on-bishops-installation/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

Federal lawmakers sidelined intense opposition across partisan divide, on Tuesday, to give a second reading to a new law seeking broad powers for lawmakers to fire the president or his vice. The House of Representatives approved the bill seeking a constitutional amendment to weaken the current procedure of impeaching presidents and their vice; which will bring the process solely within the powers of the National Assembly. Under the current law, such a drastic move as impeaching the nation’s number one and two citizens can only go through after a committee named by the Chief Justice of the Federation had investigated allegations raised by the National Assembly. Sponsors of the motion, Yakubu Dogara (Bauchi State), and Emmanuel Jime (Benue State) said that was not feasible since the Chief Justice of the Federation was an appointee of the president. They also criticised the requirement that impeachment can only be initiated for “gross misconduct”; which they argued was unspecific as to the offences qualifying of the punishment. Dogara and Jime cited several developed democracies, particularly the United States, where the powers of impeachment are solely with the legislature. However, the arguments faced intense criticisms with key members of the House, including the majority leader (representing the ruling Peoples Democratic Party) and the minority leader (representing the leading opposition party) distancing them from the bill. “I recognise the fact that Dogara presented a well-researched bill; but having said so, I am also of the opinion that the timing is very very wrong because Nigerians will read meaning into it that the plan is to impeach President Jonathan,” said Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila. Majority Leader, Leo Ogor, said the bill deserved to be consigned to the “dustbin of history”. Despite the strong opposition to its passage, lawmakers in support of the amendment, rallied support and pushed the bill through a second passage. As it involves a constitution amendment, a third passage, Senate concurrence and those from at least 24 state houses of assembly, are expected to put the bill through to law. Some of the opposing lawmakers say it was unlikely the bill will go through. “I will shoot it down,” said Gbajabiamila. http://telegraphng.com/2013/06/reps-seek-more-powers-to-impeach-presidents/ |
Residents of Popoola and Okunsanya Streets, Iju-Ishaga, where the Dana Plane crashed on June 2, 2012, have accused the government of hypocrisy. According to them, the government neglected the crash site since 2012, but hurriedly built a cenotaph two weeks to the first year memorial service. Narrating their ordeal, the property owners also said that both the government and Dana Airlines have refused to compensate them for the property they lost when the plane crashed and destroyed their homes and means of livelihood. When the governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, visited the site to mark the anniversary of the plane crash, inhabitants of the area displayed banners and placards with inscriptions like: “Ground Victims of Dana Plane Crash: One Year Later, No Compensation,” “Our action governor, help us to get our compensation from Dana,” “While we are suffering, Dana is flying,” “We want justice done now” and “We want to have Dana for Dinner”.
