PoliticsTycoon's Ex Rejects $975 Million Divorce Check by playcharles(op): 7:12am On Jan 11, 2015
Not everyone gets to see a check for $975 million with their name on it. But after a highly contentious divorce, Sue Ann Arnall is looking for more.
She rejected the check her ex-husband Harold Hamm sent her Monday, according to his attorneys.
Hamm agreed to pay the nearly $1 billion back in November. He's somewhat of a legend in the oil business, having built Continental Resources (CLR) from the ground up and led the development of North Dakota's Bakken oil field.
But Arnall, an economist and a lawyer who held executive positions in the company, has said she is entitled to more. She filed for an appeal, claiming that the fortune was due to both her work and his.
Arnall's attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The couple was married for 26 years, have two children and had no prenuptial agreement.
To make things even messier, Hamm himself filed for an appeal as well. He claims that with the dramatic drop in oil prices, his company's value has taken a hit, along with his wealth.
Despite writing the check, Hamm will move forward with his appeal, his attorney Craig Box said.

PoliticsTwo Police Officers Fired For A Kiss by playcharles(op): 12:14pm On Oct 14, 2014
When is it OK to kiss a colleague? Two Tanzanian police officers, whose kiss was widely shared on social media, have prompted a discussion about just that - and both have also lost their jobs.

A relationship with a colleague can throw up any number of complications, but the two young police officers in the picture may not have thought it would end their careers. The photograph - taken in Kagera, north west Tanzania - shows the pair kissing whilst dressed in their work uniforms, and was considered grounds for dismissal. Residents of the country have taken to social media to voice their dismay.

The image was uploaded to the internet by a third officer, who also took the photo, and drawn to the attention of the authorities at the Kagera police force. Henry Mwaibambe, the regional police commander, spoke to the BBC about the steps taken, and defends his department's decision. "We followed all disciplinary procedures to make sure that they were given a chance to defend themselves," he says. "The officer looking at the case was convinced there was compelling evidence against them, and that they had breached police code of conduct. That's why they lost their jobs." In this case it wasn't the kiss itself that led to their dismissal, but the fact that that it happened in public, whilst in uniform, and was subsequently posted online. Indeed, the officer behind the camera also lost his job over the incident.

The story was picked up by the local press last week, and news of the punishment has surprised many on social media. Most believed the response was disproportionate. "They should have been reprimanded, sacking them is extreme, huuh!" posted one on Facebook. "I once saw a pic of former US President the late Reagan kissing his wife in the Oval Office... and nobody called for his impeachment," said another. "Police couple kissing taken more serious than bribery," wrote a third on Twitter.

Masoud George, a lawyer at the Tanzania Legal and Human Rights Center says that as severe as the punishment seems, the decision is unlikely to be illegal. "It is according to their code of conduct, so from a legal point of view we can't say their dismissal was unfair."

HealthThe Marks Of Maturity by playcharles(op): 5:54pm On Jan 02, 2014
The Marks of Maturity

Students today are consuming information they aren’t completely ready to handle. The adult part of their brain is still forming and isn’t ready to apply all that our society throws at it. Their mind takes it in and files it, but their will and emotions are not prepared to act on it in a healthy way. They can become paralyzed by all the content they consume.

They want so much to be able to experience the world they’ve seen on websites or heard on podcasts, but don’t realize they are unprepared for that experience emotionally. They are truly in between a child and an adult. (This is the genius behind movie ratings and viewer discretion advisories on TV). I believe a healthy, mature student is one who has developed intellectually, volitionally, emotionally and spiritually. I also believe there are marks we can look for, as we coach them into maturity.

Signs to Look For

So what are the marks of maturity? We all love it when we see a young person who carries themselves well and shows signs of being mature. They interact with adults in an adult manner. Those kinds of students are downright refreshing. Let me give you a list of what I consider to be the marks of maturity. At Growing Leaders we seek to build these marks in young people, ages 16-24 as we partner with schools. This certainly isn’t an exhaustive list, but it is a list of characteristics I notice in young people who are unusually mature, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. If you are a parent—this is a good list of qualities to begin developing in your child. If you are a coach, or a teacher or a dean, these are the signs we wish every student possessed when they graduate. For that matter, these are signs I wish every adult modeled for the generation coming behind them.

1. A mature person is able to keep long-term commitments.

One key signal of maturity is the ability to delay gratification. Part of this means a student is able to keep commitments even when they are no longer new or novel. They can commit to continue doing what is right even when they don’t feel like it.

2. A mature person is unshaken by flattery or criticism.

As people mature, they sooner or later understand that nothing is as good as it seems and nothing is as bad as it seems. Mature people can receive compliments or criticism without letting it ruin them or sway them into a distorted view of themselves. They are secure in their identity.

3. A mature person possesses a spirit of humility.

Humility parallels maturity. Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself. It is thinking of yourself less. Mature people aren’t consumed with drawing attention to themselves. They see how others have contributed to their success and can even sincerely give honor to their Creator who gave them the talent. This is the opposite of arrogance.

4. A mature person’s decisions are based on character not feelings.

Mature people—students or adults—live by values. They have principles that guide their decisions. They are able to progress beyond merely reacting to life’s options, and be proactive as they live their life. Their character is master over their emotions.

5. A mature person expresses gratitude consistently.

I have found the more I mature, the more grateful I am, for both big and little things. Immature children presume they deserve everything good that happens to them. Mature people see the big picture and realize how good they have it, compared to most of the world’s population.

6. A mature person knows how to prioritize others before themselves.

A wise man once said: A mature person is one whose agenda revolves around others, not self. Certainly this can go to an extreme and be unhealthy, but I believe a pathway out of childishness is getting past your own desires and beginning to live to meet the needs of others less fortunate.

7. A mature person seeks wisdom before acting.

Finally, a mature person is teachable. They don’t presume they have all the answers. The wiser they get the more they realize they need more wisdom. They’re not ashamed of seeking counsel from adults (teachers, parents, coaches) or from other sources. Only the wise seek wisdom.

Based on this list, are you displaying the marks of maturity?
PoliticsAn Open Letter To President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Dated January 1, 2014 by playcharles(op): 7:59pm On Jan 01, 2014
An Open Letter to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan dated January 1, 2014

My Dear President

I have tried to get to meet with you on many occasions as I have tried to write you but it has been difficult. I am sufficiently disturbed by all the happenings in PDP as well as the recent defection of its members to other parties, to push my interest to seek some form of interaction. In order for you to appreciate my efforts, I have sent a few texts and also sent a mail – all in a bid to reach you.
You may wonder what my locus standing is to go to this extent. If you do ask this question, you will be right.
I am a Nigerian professional who has followed the trajectory of our nation and also, your track along our nation space – these many years. I must confess my adulation for you for many reasons – I consider you a good man that our nation needs to put her acts right and so help us occupy our rightful place in the comity of nations.
Let me assure you that many Nigerians who truly love this country feel the same about you. But, it will be foolish to think that those who have brought us to this humiliating pass will root for you. No, they will wish that this bazaar continues to enable them make a billing enough to give them succor and protection to their offspring.
In all the ‘elections’ we claim to have had, I voted for you even when my friends think I was wasting my vote! I preferred to waste my vote than contribute to the ‘victory’ of those who have stolen us blind and brought our development to a grinding halt.
Nigerians have chosen to direct an unfair scrutiny at you, your past period of stewardship and poured innuendos on what you stand for without affording the same scrutiny to the Lilliputians that have placed a stranglehold on our national destiny.

Sir, I thought PDP was ready to put its house in order to present a formidable front to tackle these termites in power but events since then have shown the short-sightedness of the men who surround you. Alas, 2015 is almost upon us and it will take a tsunami of sort to dislodge these vultures in power.
It is now the new song in town that APC are working in tandem with some other parties to capture power from PDP! And this is the kernel of my open letter to you Sir.

I would rather you do not re-contest in becoming a President for second term in office holding a poisoned chalice. I am struggling to see how you can work with many of these men for the reason of still retaining your office as the President. I will rather retain a memory of who you are and what you stand for than see you as President in the midst of these gang of power-grabbers and looters of our commonwealth.
I wish you stand above the crowd and retain your respect and integrity than be a President who presides over a brood of vipers. The men who surround you today are plastic and replicas of those you wish to dislodge. Pray, Sir, what is the difference between six and half a dozen?
Sir, please, let them not dismiss this my appeal to you with the wave of a hand that I am an emissary of the APC. No! Nothing can be farther from the truth, I am an independent who love our nation with passion and hates APC and her friends with coats of many colors with equal passion. I simply desire the best for my country which cannot come through APC or the band of vampires trying to climb upon your integrity and name.

Would have wished PDP had put its house in order since early 2013 and be not a part of this bandwagon of political termites. In the muddied pool are men who once bestrode the length of our nation with impunity as if tomorrow – which is today! – will never come. Their antecedents do not speak to a better future for Nigeria.
I do not envisage a party of angels; neither would I pride myself in the collection of these vermins who merely seek another opportunity To Molest our unfortunate nation.

My dear President, your place is not amongst these men. I would rather you remain the epitome of integrity that you are and watch this drama play out.
This is my wish for you as I am willing to add that my advice is both unsolicited and so, open to dismissal. I will not be surprised but it will pain me to see you sacrifice your hard-earned reputation and diminish your stature with your engagement with many of these men who brought us this low.

You have fought gallantly but Nigerians in our foolishness have cast you aside. Let us rue the day we forsook you and chose the present band of carpet-baggers and marauders who are alien to honor and dignity. Our experience since they ‘merge’ has been like giving gold to swine!
I assure you Sir, that soon and very soon, Nigerians will re-claim their nation from the clasping hands of these thieves and locusts.
I therefore plead that you remain on the right side of history and play no part in the unfolding drama of comedy and the shameful orchestra of opportunists euphemistically referred to as merger. Many of these men want to ride on your back to stardom and the opportunity to partake of the national bazaar on another platform. They miss power and its attendant spoils and appurtenances.

Please, Sir, stand aloof and retain your courage and untainted platform to speak for ordinary Nigerians who ask for nothing more than to be treated with respect and consideration in a nation that they call their own.
Nigeria and Nigerians deserve more than these men and women will offer.
I can understand if this letter or this medium of presentation riles you, I have no other choice.
May God guide you right as you make a decision for this country. Thank you and please, do have a great day.

Your friend and Compatriot,
Me…….
