The Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday, March 13, 2023, sentenced a 37-year-old Nigerian national, Onyeghani Ekene Dumkele, to life imprisonment for the murder of Limpopo artist, Shaun-Doughlas Chabalala, 23.

Sunnyside police spokesperson, Captain Daniel Mavimbela said Chabalala was robbed inside the seventh-floor residential unit and then forcefully thrown out of the window. He died at the scene.

"Shortly after he was convicted, a 37-year-old foreign national, who murdered a multitalented up-and-coming Limpopo artist, Shaun-Douglas Chabalala, 23, was handed a life sentence in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday afternoon,” Mavimbela said.

“Additionally, a 15-year jail term was imposed on Onyeghani Ekene Dumkele for aggravated robbery, plus a 12-months suspended sentence, on condition that he is deported to his native country after he completes his concurrent sentence for murder and aggravated robbery.

Chabalala and his friend, Given Mzamane, were lured to the infamous Tambotie block of flats in Sunnyside, east of Pretoria, in May 2018, through a fake advertisement of a luxury camera.

The two arrived at the populated block of flats, with the intention of purchasing the advertised camera.

“They carried a cash amount of R14 000 on them, only to be led into an ambush inside an apartment where Dumkele lived on the seventh floor. Upon entering the apartment, the victims were attacked by a group of men,” Mavimbela said.

Mzamane testified that he forced his way out of the door and manage to escape. However, it was not before he had witnessed two men, who had participated in the robbery and attack on himself and Chabalala, lift Chabalala and threw him out of the window from the same apartment."

The artist succumbed to injuries from the attack and the fall. He was declared dead at the scene.

“Dumkele was arrested almost 15 months after the murder, by Sunnyside police detective, Captain Simon Motolla, who had decided to abandon a wedding celebration that he had attended in Mpumalanga after he was tipped-off on the whereabouts of the accused,” said Mavimbela.

Dumkele was sniffed out from the ceiling inside a house in Pretoria West by a police dog, following the enlistment of the services of a K-9 Unit."

During his arrest, Dumkele blamed the murder on his missing co-accused and fellow countryman, Obienna Ofoegbuliwe, who has since absconded after he was granted bail of R3 000.

"That testimony was rejected by the court since he knew that, among others, the police had been searching for him, had not disclosed the identity of the killer prior to his arrest and was easily pointed out by Mzamane during the identification parade,” said Mavimbela.

Sunnyside police station commander, Brigadier Matshidiso Kgoadi has welcomed the stiff sentence.

Kgoadi saluted the dedicated team of investigators and the prosecutor who worked tirelessly to secure Dumkele’s conviction.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, has revealed that Americans lost $10.3 billion to internet scams last year.



According to a new FBI report, the loss in 2022 was the highest in five years.



According to ABC News, the Bureau’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) lodged more than 2,000 complaints per day.



The most highly reported crimes were phishing expeditions, with 300,497 victims reporting over $52 million in losses in 2022, according to the Bureau.


Phishing, defined as “the use of unsolicited email, text messages, and telephone calls purportedly from a legitimate company requesting personal, financial, and/or login credentials,” is frequently successful because phishing emails will often resemble those from people victims know personally, prompting them to click on unsecured links.


Data breaches and non-payment scams were the next most common internet scams in 2022, claiming 58,859 and 51,679 victims, respectively, according to the report.


Ransomware, a type of cyber intrusion which locks up a device’s data until a ransom is paid, is of particular concern for cybersecurity professionals due to the low rare of reports by victims of ransomware attacks.



In 2022, the FBI “received 2,385 complaints known as ransomware with adjusted losses of more than $34.3 million,” according to the report.


“The IC3 has seen an increase in an additional extortion tactic used to facilitate ransomware. The threat actors pressure victims to pay by threatening to publish the stolen data if they do not pay the ransom,” the IC3 warned.



“The FBI does not encourage paying a ransom to criminal actors,” the report said.


“Paying a ransom may embolden adversaries to target additional organisations, encourage other criminal actors to engage in the distribution of ransomware, and/or fund illicit activities. Paying the ransom also does not guarantee that a victim’s files will be recovered.”



Earlier this year, the Justice Department disrupted a ransomware gang called HIVE, which was responsible for 87 incidents targeting critical infrastructure, the report says.


Call center scams are responsible for over $1 billion in losses to victims.


“Call centers overwhelmingly target the elderly, with devastating effects,” the report says. “Almost half the victims report to be over 60 (46%), and experience 69% of the losses (over $724 million).”



In total, the elderly lost $3.1 billion to internet scams in 2022, the most of any age group.

Indonesian authorities on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, said they have arrested four foreigners including three Nigerians for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into the country.

The Nigerian nationals were arrested separately between January and March at Soekarno-Hatta international airport in Jakarta and several apartments in the capital, police spokesperson Trunoyudo Wisnu Andika told a news conference in Jakarta.

One of the Nigerians arrested had allegedly swallowed dozens of capsules filled with more than a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of methamphetamine.

Indonesia is a major hub for drug trafficking in Southeast Asia and has strict drug laws, with convicted smugglers sometimes executed by firing squad.

Gatot Sugeng Wibowo, chief of customs at Soekarno-Hatta, said officers arrested Malachi Onyekachukwu Umanu, a Nigerian who arrived at the airport from Ethiopia on March 5 with no suitcase or bag.

His suspicious behavior prompted officers to check his body, and an X-ray turned up some 64 capsules inside his stomach. Authorities managed to force all the capsules, which were filled with a total of 1.07 kilograms (2.3 pounds) of crystal methamphetamine, out of his stomach within three days, Wibowo said.

Customs officers at the airport also arrested a Brazilian man, Gustavo Pinto da Silveira, shortly after he arrived from Rio de Janeiro in early January, carrying a backpack, suitcase and surfboard. He initially refused to let officers test the contents of liquids in his luggage.

His resistance led officers to further investigate the substance, which was stored in six toiletry bottles and had a strong odor. Lab tests confirmed the fluid was 2 liters (67.6 ounces) of liquid cocaine. Police said it was worth 20 billion rupiah ($1.3 million).

Police also arrested two other Nigerian nationals along with an Indonesian man and woman who tried to smuggle 1.04 kilograms (2.2 pounds) of crystal meth from India wrapped in lace fabric through a post office in Jakarta.

Mukti Juharsa, the police director of drug investigations in the capital, believes the recent arrests are all linked to an international syndicate that sought to distribute the drugs in Jakarta.

"Foreigners shouldn’t try to bring drugs to Indonesia. They won’t escape being arrested, as customs at all international airports in Indonesia have been improved,” Juharsa said.

"He said the suspects would be punished according to Indonesia’s strict narcotics law, with a minimum of five years’ imprisonment and a potential death sentence, as both dealers and distributors of various types of drugs.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime says Indonesia is a major smuggling hub in part because international drug syndicates target its young population. There are 5.6 million drug users in the country of 270 million people, Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency estimates.

A 29-year-old Nigerian national was arrested for supplying drugs in Delhi-NCR, police said on Monday, March 13, 2023.

According to the police, 1,050 grams of Methaqualone drugs was seized from the accused, identified as Oluebube Damain.

Damain came to India from Nigeria on a three-month visa in 2019 and after expiry of visa, he continued to live illegally in the country, police said.

Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Singh Yadav said the accused was arrested when he had come at Mohan Garden in Uttam Nagar for supplying Methaqualone drugs to an unknown person.

A total of 1,050 grams of light yellow colour substance known as Methaqualone worth crores in the international market was recovered from his possession.

A case under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act was registered, Yadav added.

Two Nigerian nationals were arrested for allegedly cheating women by proposing marriage and then taking money on the pretext of getting Customs clearance for expensive gifts, the Delhi Police said on Sunday, March 12, 2023.

The accused, Alex (30) and 45-year-old Ibeh allegedly approached women on matrimonial sites and introduced themselves as marine engineers based in the UK.

The matter came to light in February when a 24-year-old resident of the President's Estate, Rashtrapati Bhawan, lodged a police complaint.

The victim alleged in her complaint that she connected with a man who introduced himself as Aman Arora, a marine engineer based in the UK, on a matrimonial site.

Shortly after, the victim started chatting with "Arora" on WhatsApp. During this time, he shared a London-Mumbai airline ticket.
Later, the victim got a call from a woman posing as a "Mumbai airport official" who told her that "Arora" had been detained for carrying GBP 40,000 pounds, she alleged.

The woman asked the victim to pay Rs 8,500 as registration fee for valuable articles, the police said, adding that the complainant subsequently made several payments amounting to Rs 4 lakh.

On the basis of technical analysis of mobile numbers and IP addresses, it was learnt that a gang of Nigerian nationals was operating from Greater Noida, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Pranav Tayal.

The suspects' location was identified and a raid conducted on the Greater Noida society from where Alex was apprehended. The mobile phone used to commit the crime was also seized, [/b]he said.

“During interrogations, [b]Alex disclosed that he came to India on a medical visa in 2020. He started cheating women by proposing marriage or sending expensive gifts with the help of his associates,” the official said.

“The gang created fake profiles on social media in the name of persons settled in the UK... They then contacted Indian women on social media. After proposing to them and luring them with expensive gifts, they would ask for money on the pretext of Custom clearance,”

In this case, the accused created a profile in the name of Aman Arora on a matrimonial site at the direction of his associate. The accused proposed to marry the victim and settle in the US.

Alex's associate Ibeh used to manage the bank accounts used to siphon off the money, he added.

Ibeh was arrested in Greater Noida while three ATM cards and Rs 10,500 in cash were also seized from his possession.

The police in Imo state has uncovered a church used as a baby factory in the state.

A statement released by CSP Michale Abattam, spokesperson of the state police command, says on September 9, the state command's tactical unit received an intelligence report that one Amarachi Okechukwu Dioku, 18, of Umudurualaoka Uba Ifakala Mbaitoli LGA of Imo State, who was earlier reported missing on 23/5/2021, by her parents was sighted in the premises of a church located in an isolated area along MCC/Uratta road in Owerri North LGA of Imo State.

Abattam said upon receiving the information, the state Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Rabiu Hussaini psc, immediately dispatched the command's Anti kidnapping unit, who mobilized, stormed, and condoned the church, "JESUS LIFE ASSEMBLY " located at School Garden, Uratta in Owerri North LGA of Imo State, where the prime suspect and resident Evangelist of the church, Evangelist Ugochi Orisakwe, 47, alongside her gang members namely, Chidi Orisakwe "M" age 34 years , Pauline Nwagbunwanne "F" age 42 years , Elizabeth Uzoma "F" age 61 years and Chibueze Joy "F" age 31 years were all arrested and taken to the station.

The spokesperson said the victim, Miss Amarachi Okechukwu Dioku was rescued unhurt with five months old pregnancy and was immediately taken to a government hospital for treatment. She was later reunited with her parents amidst jubilation.

''On interrogation, Evangelist Ugochi Orisakwe "F" confessed to have been using the church as a place where young girls are kept, impregnated and after delivery, the girls are paid off and their babies sold to rich and childless clients.

Meanwhile, investigation is on going and efforts are on to arrest other members of the syndicate who are on the run.'' Abattam added.
