PoliticsHow Lagos Turns Paupers To Mega Millionaires by Pomare3(op): 1:00pm On Jul 08, 2024
In Lagos, dreams come true. Servants become masters, and vagrants become homeowners. Such transformation can happen in a matter of years, or even months.
Zion Orubebe left his Rivers State home for Lagos in 2015. He had graduated from Rivers State University in May 2013 but was jobless for two years.

Prodded by a Lagos-based friend, Orubebe moved to the state in October of 2015.

“I had only N3,000 ($15 at that time) when I came here,” he told BusinessDay.

PoliticsRe: Economist Intelligence Unit Report About Tinubu Is Fake by Pomare3: 12:17pm On Sep 26, 2022
You need to pay to read the EIU report. I have seen it. Meanwhile you can see excerpt from the report on today's BusinessDay.ng's back page.

Joevics:
Several newspaper yesterday published an article about the Economist Intelligence Unit publishing a Country report that shows APC candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu will win the 2023 elections.

The only problem with is that the report doesn't exist anywhere including on the Economist Intelligence Unit site (https://www.eiu.com/n) where several other reports can be found.
We searched the platform for the keyword "Tinubu" but nothing showed up. It's neither on the section of news relating to Nigeria (https://country.eiu.com/nigeria).

A quick search on the internet by Locals.com.ng showed that the story emanated from business Businessday with no reference to any source.

So while there could be a report, non exist as of now.
It's important to point out that the Economist predicted Buhari to win in 2015 and Atiku to win the 2019 elections.

Music/Radio5 Nigerian Musicians Who Are Big Internationally But Less Known In The Country by Pomare3(op):
Nigeria is a breeding ground for all sorts of talents.

Some eventually become big in the country, others add international audience to their fan base, while yet others take it away totally, leaving little to show for their virtuosity in their home country yet becoming huge outside its shores.

Many traditional musicians are examples in the first category. The great Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and his sons are examples of the second category. More in that category include Wizkid, D’banj and many others. At first attempt, there may be a bit of hesitation while selecting examples for the last category. Rest assured, examples abound.

Here are five sterling examples of Nigerians making it big in alternative music outside of the country but less known in the country.

1. Keziah Jones

Keziah Jones, real name, Olufemi Sanyaolu is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and guitarist who got his first international recording deal on the streets of France in 1990.

Like Fela Kuti who is one of the biggest influence in Keziah Jones’ career, the artist carved a niche for himself by creating blufunk. The music sub-genre is a crossbreed of raw blues elements; hard, edgy funk rhythms and a generous dose of Yoruba traditional music.
The 49-year-old who continue to perform on live stages throughout the world has six studio albums, most of which topped charts in faraway Australia, France, Germany and other European countries.

Even though he was born in Lagos, and has returned to the country several times after making several international hits, he is not very popular in his own country Nigeria.

2. Kah-Lo

Kah-Lo, real name Faridah Seriki is a Nigerian artiste who was nominated for the 2017 Grammy awards for her vocal works on in Rinse and Repeat by British Disk Jockey, Riton.

Although not popular in Nigeria, the four-minute track song was released as a digital download in the United Kingdom on February 26, 2016. The song entered the UK Singles Chart at number 13 and at number 2 on the UK Dance Chart. The song was streamed millions of times on sportify, and on Youtube. Kah-Lo is a daughter of former Nigerian Minister of Defence and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Chief Demola Seriki studied.

3. Skepta

Born Joseph Junior Adenuga to Nigerian parents who migrated to Britain, Skepta is one of the leading figures in grime music, a fusion of electronic music, ragga, rap and dancehall music which originated from Britain. Since 2006, the 34-year-old has released five mixtapes and four albums including Konnichiwa which was awarded the Mercury Prize as Album of the year in 2016.

4.Tinie Tempah

Like Skepta, Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu, popularly known as Tinie Tempah, also performs the grime genre. Before releasing his debut album, Disc-Overy which was certified platinum just four months after it was released in 2010, Tinie Tempah released two singles, “Pass Out” and “Written in the Stars” both of which sat comfortably on the British chart.
Tinie Tempah gained some fame in Nigeria after Jumoke Orisagunna, the bread hawker became a star model. Jumoke was accidentally photographed by TY Bello while during a photo shoot session with Tinie Tempah.

5. Oghene Kologbo

Oghene Kologbo is a Warri, Delta State born Afrobeat musician.

The 59-year-old musician played tenor guitar in Fela Anikikulapo Kuti’s Africa 70 for the whole life of the band.
He has also worked with great musicians like James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Lester Bowie, Paul McCartney and so on. Oghene Kologbo is popular in Bruxelles, Berlin and the rest of the European music circuit, yet little is known of him in Nigeria.

TravelPHOTOS: See The Dress Causing Trouble On France Beaches by Pomare3(op): 8:17pm On Aug 24, 2016
The ban on burkini in about 23 towns in European country, France has evoked several reactions on the internet. The reactions – both negative and positive – became stronger on Wednesday when photographs emerged of armed French police confronting a woman on a beach and making her remove some of her clothing as part of a controversial ban on the swimwear.

What exactly is a burkini? That’s the question on the lips of many Nigerians.

Also spelt burqini, it is a two piece swimsuit/bikini/hijab crossbreed worn specifically for swimming. It was designed by Australia based Lebanese designer, Aheda Zanetti.

“Burkini or Burqini are brand names invented and developed by designer Aheda Zanetti as part of the early marketing of her product – swimwear which is “two piece like a bikini” and “smaller than a burka” ( a full cover over coat ),” Zanetti said on her website burkini.com.

She told telegraph.co.uk that she had sold an estimated 700,000 of the garments since 2008, including customers who were “Jews, Hindus, Christians, Mormons, women with various body issues”. She also said she has received emails from around the world supporting her design after the recent ban in France.

SportsPele Would Be Happy To See These Changes When He Visits Nigeria Again by Pomare3(op): 7:44pm On Aug 05, 2016
Legendary Brazilian soccer star, Edson Arantes do Nascimentor, popularly known as “Pele’’ will be in Nigeria from August 11 till August 12 for a two-day programme on youth development and empowerment.

Many soccer fans are already excited about the visit and so is Pele himself.
“It has been nearly 50 years since my first visit to Nigeria. I look forward to being there again on August 11/12,” he tweeted recently.

Here are a few things we think he will be very excited to know about Nigeria, 47 years after his first visit.

No more civil war

Pele’s first visit was in January 1969. At that time, Nigeria was going through a terrible civil war. A small region in the southern part of the country was trying to secede to become the Republic of Biafra. Legend has it that when Pele visited, Nigeria and Biafra had to reach a two day ceasefire to allow for matches to be played between Santos, Pele’s club side and the Green Eagles of Nigeria. Another game was also played in Benin City.

The country now has more stadiums

The first match Pele’s team, Santos played in Nigeria was at the Lagos City Stadium, now known as the Onikan Stadium. At that time that was probably the best stadium in the country. Formerly known as the King George V, stadium, Onikan is the oldest stadium in the country. It was built in 1930. The second match was played at the Ogbe Stadium against the Mid-western team. There were only few stadia with facilities needed for such high profile matches.
However, 47 years after, Pele would be happy to see that Nigeria has more than 50 stadia with acceptable facilities, albeit neglected.

There are now football academies in the country

Though football has always been a big sport in Nigeria, there was hardly any football academy in the country in 1969 when Pele visited for the first time. Currently though, there am more than a hundred of such outfits in the country, starting with the Pepsi Football Academy established in 1992. The academy has been responsible for discovering and breeding many talented footballers in the country including internationals like Osaze Odemwinge and Mikel ...

2. Segun Toriola is competing in the Olympic for a record seventh times at the Rio Olympics. He has won several international championships and tournaments. His biggest achievement at the Olympics has been reaching the Men’s Singles 1/16 final at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, beating amongst others former world number 1 Jean-Michel Saive as well as David Zhuang. His 1/32 match-up with Jean-Michel Saive was seen by many as one of the highlights of the Men’s Singles Tournament. He narrowly lost 4-3 to heavily favoured Oh Sang-Eun in the 1/16 final. The 41- year-old is yet to win an Olympic medal so he will be fighting hard to get one, after becoming the African with the most appearance at the Olympics.

3. Margaret Bamgbose is a 19-year-old quarter miler who would be wearing Nigeria’s colours at the Rio Olympics. She would be representing the country in the Athletics Women’s 400m dash and the Athletics Women’s 4 x 400m Relay. He was the 1999 European Athletics Junior Championships Champion, and came 5th at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. After multiple indoor and outdoor UK titles, he later switched to compete for Nigeria. Since competing for Nigeria he has won back-to-back African Championships in Athletics titles and the Commonwealth Games championship and is the current All-Africa Games Champion. At the 2012 Summer Olympics Oke finished seventh in the triple jump final, the best Nigerian result of the Games. He would be looking to make that a medal this time.

Ukaoma Miles going for gold at the olympics

7. Miles Ukaoma is a US-born Nigerian hurdler. He competed in the 400 metres hurdles event at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing narrowly missing the semifinals. His personal best in the 400 metres hurdles is 48.84 seconds set in Warri in 2015. The 24-year-old was among the Nigerian relay team that got the silver medal at the 2014 African Championships held in Porto Novo, Benin republic.

8. The Nigerian Basketball team − comprising Al-Farouq Aminu, Ekene Ibekwe, Michael Gbinije, Chamberlain Oguchi Alade Aminu, Josh Akognon Ebi Ere, Ike Diogu, Ben Uzoh and Michael Umeh – is one source the country’s sport fans would be looking to to make a haul of medals. Even though the team did not go far at the London Olympics four years ago, a lot of Nigerians are still hoping in them, looking at the individual qualities and skills of the team members. For example Diogu plays in the prestigious NBA tournament. While a number of the other team members play quality basketball in Puerto Rico.

9. Nigerian men’s football team has the hope of many fans to bring home a medal. One reason is that the predecessors of the Dream Team IV, broke the record in 1996 to become the first African team to win the Olympic team, beating the game’s big names including, Brazil and Argentina to win the gold. Subsequent dream teams have not been able to repeat the feat, but they have not performed too badly. This year’s team comprises the overall team Nigeria captain, Mikel Obi, Imoh Ezek...

CelebritiesFormer Gov Omololu Olunloyo Denounces His Daughter, Kemi After Indicating She by Pomare3(op): 8:31am On Jul 08, 2016
Former governor of Oyo State, Engr Omololu Olunloyo has denounced and dissociated himself from the activities of his daughter Kemi Omololu-Olunloyo.

The former governor said he was denouncing the; self-acclaimed international journalist and Canadian deportee for her irresponsible, libellous and scandalous writings.

According to a statement signed by the former governor no one who has read some of the things written by Kemi would have any doubt about her “spiritual or psychiatric status”.

“By the Hippocratic oath, it will be out of order, except in camera to disclose her mental state which nothing to be proud of is,” Olunloyo said in the statement.

He mentioned that Kemi has an accomplice, one Aboderin, with whom she proceeds in her libellous acts.
“Some of their most unfortunate victims are their half siblings,” Olunloyo said.

“Others of higher status in the society are ex-President Obasanjo and quite recently, clergymen with large respectable following such as the General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor E.A Adeboye, a brilliant fellow Mathematician; an inspired Bishop Oyedepo and the inimitable Reverend T.B Joshua, all learned men. She includes me her father. All the four of us, she dubs ritualists.

“Of course, none of us, as far as I know, is anything of the sort. She has gone far as to accuse us of sexual crime and gone too far to give the social media itself a dubious name, in terms of uncontrolled freedom to assault others.”

The former governor apologised to all who have been disturbed by his daughters misdemeanours, expressing hope that such ones would accept apology.
Olunloyo said the 52-year-old thinks freedom is something that can be exercised arbitrarily at the expense of other people’s freedom.

He dissociated himself from all the activities of Kemi, saying: “I hereby denounce and dissociate myself from all her views against individuals and groups, including spiritual icons and private individuals.

“She must accept responsibility for her action and utterances as well as the consequence.

CrimeVIDEO: Woman Livestreamed Police Killing Her Boyfriend On Facebook by Pomare3(op): 4:56pm On Jul 07, 2016
A black man was shot by a police officer on Thursday in Falcon Heights in Minnesota United States, while his girlfriend livestreamed it on Facebook.

The victim Philando Castile was shot to death by police, and his girlfriend, Lavish “Diamond” Reynolds, caught the aftermath of the shooting on video from the driver’s seat.

In the video, Reynolds explains that she was pulled over for a broken tail-light at the corner of Larpenteur Avenue and Fry Street, at which point she claims that “police shot him for no apparent reason, no reason at all.”

Reynolds says that her boyfriend told the officer upfront that he was carrying a gun, which Reynolds claims in the video he had a permit to carry, but Castile explained that he would be reaching slowly for his wallet and identification. The officer apparently told Castile not to move at that point.

“As he was putting his hands back up, the officer shot him in the arm four or five times,” Reynolds says.

A woman claiming to be Iyanya’s fiancée has blasted him on instagram.

The instagram user, Tecomblah Gussin, called Iyanya a coward who chases fans on Facebook. She also vowed never to marry the musician.

The Kukere crooner is yet to make any comment on the instagram comment.

Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk, who rose to fame in 2008 after winning the 2008 MTN Project Fame West Africa is the dream of many female fans, especially considering his well toned muscles and his seductive dance moves.

Around 2014, Iyanya dated Ghanaian actress Yvvone Nelson for about eight months but broke up amidst several speculations. Nelson had later come out to say there were too many lies in the relationship, and that was why she broke up.

“We dated for 7 to 8 months,” she said in an interview with entertainment website, bellanaija.

“We had something and I thought it was special, like he was a wonderful guy but it was all lies. He had other girls and other things he was doing. Aside the actress that was in the picture, there were a lot more. That is how bad it is.

“We were in a relationship and he lied throughout and he was able to do all those things because I wasn’t living in Nigeria. But aside from the distance, I feel if you’re a genuine person and you’re loyal, you would still not do that.”

The relationship of Tecomblah Gussin with Iyanya is yet to be confirmed.

The roads were unusually empty in Abeokuta, the capital city of Ogun State on the first day of April 2013. Not that the traffic in the city on regular days ranked anywhere near that of Lagos or Abuja, but the city was beginning to develop its own reputation for traffic logjams at certain times of the day on working days of the week.

The unusually empty streets provided the opportunity to evaluate the ongoing changes in the state capital. From Lafenwa where an extension of the Ogun River bridge is nearing conclusion to Enu-Gada where several houses have been demolished to accommodate the road dualisation underway, Abeokuta is clearly wearing a new look.

Turning right into Totoro, the road opens up to a smooth carpet of coal tar that would tempt any driver to step on the gas, bar the speed breaks at regular intervals. The beauty of the formerly narrow road is further emphasised by the fine line of simple filigreed streetlights on the pavements. The view becomes more breathtaking by night when the yellow lights from the streetlight are cast on the smooth black coal tar carpet juiced up by a mélange of the headlights and brake lights of gently cruising vehicles.

Anyone familiar with Totoro Road before May 2012 will notice the striking evolution that has since taken place. Besides the road now bifurcated into six lanes, beautiful well-painted houses greet the wandering eyes of passengers looking out of the windows of their cars. A few mud house ruins are still visible but there are clear evidences of imminent replacements with eye-catching buildings.

Moving further towards the Ita-Iyalode axis, the retouched statue of Iyalode Efunroye Tinunbu stands gallantly in her square with an I-am-a-survivor pose, considering the extent of demolition that went on around her. Akiness Petrol Station was not that lucky; it was demolished and all its underground tanks exhumed. The two-dimensional stature of late Oba Dr. Adisa Odeleye, the former Olowu of Owu, was also not spared though it was replaced by a garden similarly named after the late king.

Turning left into Ita-Eko, off Akinolugbade Road, a pedestrian bridge is immediately obvious. Being the first pedestrian bridge in Abeokuta, it always catches attention; it is fully covered and also has doors sealing both entrances. On completion, it is said that the bridge would be fitted with air conditioners.
