There is this burning argument about which is the best car. Yesterday 1st of August 2020, I traveled with my Toyota Corolla 2004 model from Abuja to Port Harcourt. The journey took about 12 hours. I use only 60 litres of petrol for the duration of the journey. For a similar journey we used about 100 litres for a Peugeot 301. Considering a journey of 678 Km this is the fairest deal of fuel consumptions. Corolla is King.

Your assumptions are shallow.

678/60=11.3km/l=26.58mpg

First off, a 2004 Honda Civic has better fuel economy so will do this trip with less fuel. Will it be king if it does?

26.5mpg on a highway on a Corolla is poor, I was expecting like 30mpg considering it is rated 34-36mpg highway. With our bad fuel, bad roads and loading, 30mpg is more appropriate.

The worst I get on my 2003 Honda accord is 24mpg.

24mpg=10.2km/l
678/10.2=66.5l

That means at worst case I will use 6.5l more which translates to N929.50k.

The average cost of buying a 2004 Corolla is 300k more. If say we both go to PH and back once a month that will be 2k times 12=24k/year
300k/24=12½yrs

What I lost in fuel economy is gained in cost price. I also gained in performance. On reliability, that is another subject for another thread.

It still boils down to preference.

I love this!

Yes it's true that Corolla is tagged the best when it comes to fuel but still there are other gurus on the road

Toyota might be known for durability and good mpg... But there are compromise which some buyers might not be aware of like handling, interior quality and plushness, performance, best bargain for value.
Other things worth considering

1, the best mpg is actual not corrolla's

2, cheapest parts corrola 2004 engine 250k transmission say 90k, Civic 2004 engine 120k transmission 80k

3, resale value - corolla 2004 bought at 1.8m sold 1.2m after 2 years... Depreciation or value lost 600k... HONDA civic 2004 bought 1.3m sold 700k aftsr 2 years value lost 600k...if use for Uber... The Civic guy would had recovered his money faster

Etc add yours

I also think that Toyota Corolla is one of the best cars. I have owned this car for 2 years now and have traveled a long distance. The car is reliable. I didn't have any major problems. By the way, here is https://carbuzz.com/cars/toyota/corolla Toyota Corolla review. I especially liked the ratings.
Exterior Design 8/10
Performance 7/10
Fuel Economy 9/10
Interior & Cargo 8/10
Infotainment & Features 7/10
Reliability 10/10
Safety 10/10
Value For Money 8/10
I think all of this is correct. This is a nice and modern car.

We are so fixated on fuel economy in this country and considering it's relatively cheap, it's worrisome.

Is Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Honda CR-V..... Are they all the same, in fuel consumption? I saw one Honda Accord 2003 on jiji... Is jiji safe to buy.

Thanks, I am beginning to consider Honda... But my second question is.... Are they all d same, civic, Accord and CRV.... Because it seems I can only afford Accord 2002-2003 model

No the are not the same, civic is easy to maintain, the dont have leg pulling issue, smaller engine and good on gas mileage. Honda accord is bigger than civic, have more power, more spacious and more leg room. Avoid the v6 eod or dc, they are known to have transmission issues. They crv is a cuv not a sedan, you can consider crv if you leave in a bad terrain.

Go for 2004 to 07 accord, the ac and sound system of that car is on another level.

They are not the same. Civic is in class of Corolla; Accord is comparable with Camry, while CR-V could be compared with a 4-plug Highlander. However, CR-V shares same platform with Civic (Particularly from 07/08, no leg pulling) but they are not the same... not in size or fuel consumption, Civic is a compact car while CR-V is a crossover SUV.

So you think civic is better generally. What lower model I should avoid, because the main challenge is fund, I need 2002 to 2004, it's usually cheaper
