The first thing you learn in the street is: OBSERVATION. They will tell you to always observe where you are at any point in time, whenever you go to a new place.


The first day I landed in Newcastle, I didn't know the street I live in was as bad as the street I grew up in Nigeria. To the point I get warning from taxi drivers anytime I am opportune to take one.

The first day I landed in Newcastle, I went to buy food by around that 11pm I was so hungry. When I was coming back, I saw two guys, you'd never know they're together, but I saw them from a mile away, they positioned themselves in a way that you can't avoid the road. As soon as I reached them, one of them asked me if I had a smoke, I politely told him I didn't. Next thing he asked me was for time. I laughed within me, because I knew he wanted to rob me but wanted to make sure I had what he wanted to rob me.

I simply told him I didn't know, but from my guess, it's pretty late and they should be in bed at that time...

He laughed, I laughed and went my way. All these while, I was very polite yet making my grounds.

Tbh not every man has the opportunity to live in the street. My mum hated the street, she in fact thought I was a problem child but she never knew I was learning about the street due to the kind of friends I had and today it had helped me.

My advice: Those guys in your neighbourhood, the good for nothing guys, stop looking down on them or discriminating them, they have loads of experience that you can only learn if you at least call them humans.

If you are from the streets, that means you already know the tenets of the street. You smell danger from afar and know when to move ahead and when to stay.
"Street identifys Street" You already know how to relate with them at every given time. They don't teach that in any school, apart from the school of hard knocks.

When I was doing my NYSC in one remote village in port Harcourt back in the days. Anybody that knows PH know how rough that place be. The always harassed and robbed my colleagues. But I never lost one pin in that town. At a point my colleagues started thinking I'm the one sending the boys to steal from them because I have never been attacked or lost one item. But I don't have any hand in any of those acts. Most times I will lead them to where they will go and get some of their stolen items back.

It's because I already know the street and how to relate with them village guys. They already see me as their own, hence they can't harm me.
