I think that formalin is not the right preservative in liquid soap production, and it is the reason for the bad odour that you had after a while. You see, we have Industrial liquid soap and ordinary liquid soap. But, if your aim was to produce ''liquid soap'', i feel that NaOH should be substituted with KOH, and i also feel that the formulation will not give a better product.

Permit me to pause here, so that you can learn more. Good luck!

soap production has to do with having standard products that can compete with the ones outside. I have a contact that helped me to produce detergent while my close friend was able to produce soap from him as well.

To me, i don't like keeping much secrets, if someone has done a marvelous work, he deserves commendation.

My own recommendation goes to my favourite young entrepreneur, Ubong Edem whom you know as ''The Young Investor'' Though he's young, I'll prefer him to the so-called Professors that we have in this Country. Let him show as he has shown me, my friend, and others!

Soap making is one business that can absolutely survive without electricity. There are two types of soap making process Hot and cold process, either can be applied in soaponification of Liquid and solid soap.
Soap making is a money spinner and only YOU can limit yourself in your achievements.
Before joining the soap production industry:
*Ensure you have people skills for marketing purpose.
*Drive your production inline with the process to prevent avoidable accidents
*Make sure you have a fire-extinguisher within site.
*Always work in a ventilated environment.
* Hand gloves are a must.
*Ensure to you have vinegar around as a neutralizing agent in-case of spill or accident.
*Protective eye wear is a must before production. There is no alternative to a damage or lost sight.

We are available to train and assist in setting you up as soap manufacturer. Our area of training also includes production, filling, and labeling, we assist in sourcing machines such as capping (in case of capped liquid soaps), fillers and label machines (all manually operated)

What we can train you on:
1. Liquid soap Making (Market: Everyday ppl, car wash outfits, hotels, schools etc)
2. Hard soap making (Market: Everyday ppl)
3. Fabric conditioner (Major market: Laundry outfits, hotels)
4. Air Freshner ( Market: demand for this product is high in the hotel community)
5. Essential oil or flavored oil production, the nice smell you get from your soap or shower gel is created by additives called essential oil (There is a huge demand for essential oil among soap manufacturers)

With a capital of around N5000 - N8000 an in house liquid soap production factory can set rolling call Tina@08185978746 to get started.
Each of the 5 training listed is a stand alone production please when calling indicate which you are interested in.

Dinggle,
Thanks for the safety information provided.
A business that can be operated without electricity, which product is in demand, and can be set up with low funds is good business for anyone to do in our type of economy where many are poor and jobless and no access to capital and bank credits.
However the challenge will be too many producers due to low entry costs and perhaps a saturated soap market. What will then make the difference is one's marketing ability to sell, having a unique selling point, and ability to produce a good quality product.
From what i have learnt on this thread, a soap must be safe for the users, dangerous chemicals should be avoided in the production
How much is the training?
Actually, i am interested in Bar Soap for laundry and Powder Detergent.
How much would it cost to set up the machinery for soap production?
Please shed more light on the training and machine set up.

Soap making is a very good business and can easily take one out of the un-employment market as one becomes one's own Boss very easily and quickly.

Apart form soap, you could also learn to produce several other types of household items such as body cream, hair cream, perfumes, bleach etc.

It has now become quite easy to learn and master the trade owing largely to doorstep training delivery service now available at miVEPA Empowerment Business Trainings.

You will discover how to go about it in the easiest, most profitable manner with little startup capital from you.

For how to start, send your inquiries or questions to mivepa.empowerments@gmail.com

If formalin is not safe for use, then what preservatives should be used and at what concentration?

I "see" so much noise and less talk.

Let those who know and what others to know, speak up!!!!
Re: Soap-making Business In Nigeria by mivepa: 4:30pm On Feb 23, 2012
Citric acid is a much safer preservative and quite user friendly.

Surprisingly, Vitamin C is also a very good natural preservative likewise sodium benzoate and benzoic acid.

See the attached safety table and document for adequate informative comparison of different types of preservatives and their safety levels.

However, a little application of formalin to your soap formulation should not make your soap 'dangerous' especially if you don't apply more than two '4-litre keg' capfuls to a 25 litre soap formulation.

hello friends. I just made liquid soap which I intend to sell around my area. I need ur help on costing, how much 4litre keg, 1.5litre (eva bottle) and 75cl bottle.
I'll really appreciate your help pls
Re: Soap-making Business In Nigeria by ibhena(m): 12:46pm On Jun 27, 2012
oluyemieve, Pricing all depends on your cost of production and your target market! Sum up all the cost your incurred, and divide by the total quantity you produced then add your mark up. you will be able to arrive at a convenient price for your products!
For those wishing to go into production of liquid soap and have a good grip on product marketing and pricing thereafter smile to the bank, contact me for a guide on "Liquid Soap Production and Marketing" it costs just a paltry sum of money but you are sure of making good steady source of income from it. Contact me through this email: greencraftideas@gmail.com (if you are serious about it)! Good luck.

Homemade soaps, lotions, oils
and other bath and body
products are not just fun to
make but are great for gifting
as well. It also makes for a
rewarding and unique
experience. The entire process
of soap making, from start to
finish, takes about 2 days
which include mixing the raw
materials, letting it cool down
and molding the mixture to
obtain the finished product.
This activity requires handling
of caustic products, so should
either be done by adults or
under adult supervision. Here is
how to make soap:
Difficulty:
Moderate
Things You'll Need:
32 oz. water
11.2 oz. lye
3 lbs. lard
1 lb. coconut oil
1 lb. olive oil
1.5 oz. fragrance
1 oz. coloring dye (optional)
Accurate weighing scale
A stainless steel or enameled
pot
1 plastic container
(preferably with lid)
Stick blender
Thermometer
Plastic or stainless steel
spoon
Plastic molds
Goggles
Rubber gloves
Thick apron
Rubber gloves
1 oz. coloring dye
Thermometer
3 lbs. lard
11.2 oz. of lye
1 plastic container, with lid
Stainless steel or enameled
pot
Plastic Molds
32 oz. of water
Instructions
Prepare
1. Gather all the ingredients
required for making soap.
2. Collect all the necessary
equipments that you need.
3. Collect the safety gear.
4. Put on the apron and rubber
gloves and wear the goggles.
Remember, lye is dangerous
and can cause severe burns.
Make soap
5. Take the weighing scale and
place a plastic container on
the scale.
6. Add water in the container
and carefully mix in lye in 1:3
ratios. For e.g. For 11 ounces
of lye use nearly 33 ounces
of water to mix it.
Remember to add lye to
water and not vice versa.
7. Be very cautious as lye emits
lot of heat and fumes when
mixed with water.
Therefore, mix the lye and
water in an open place as the
fumes can be dangerous
when inhaled.
8. Let the lye cool down. This
will take around two to
three hours. Ideally, prepare
the lye mixture one day in
advance and leave it at room
temperature.
9. Measure the lard and oils and
pour them in a stainless steel
or enameled container.
0. Put the container on the
stove and heat it slowly till
the fats melt and form a
uniform mixture.
1. Stir gently and use the
thermometer to check
whether the mixture has
reached the ideal
temperature, which will be
between 120 and 130
degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Add the lye mixture to the
fats carefully and slowly. Use
a spoon to mix the solution
while you are pouring lye.
3. Stir the mixture well using a
stick blender and spoon
alternately for short spans.
For e.g. If you have used
blender for 1 minute, follow
it with mixing with spoon
for nearly the same time. Do
not use the blender
continually for longer
duration.
4. Note that the texture of this
mixture will start changing
in some time; say in about 5
minutes. It will become
thicker and more opaque.
This is soap in liquid form.
5. Measure out the fragrance
and add it to this mixture
and stir again with a spoon.
6. Add 1 oz. coloring dye if you
want to add some color to
the bland soap mixture. Use
the blender to mix the color
uniformly.
Mold soap
7. Pour the mixture into the
plastic molds immediately
and let it cool down.
8. Let the mixture sit at room
temperature for 24 hours.
You will know that the
mixture has condensed if its
temperature has dropped
down to the roam
temperature. It may be still a
little warm to touch, which is
fine.
9. Remove the soap bars from
the molds. They should pop
right off, but you may need
to twist the tray a little so
that they may come off.
0. Still struggling? Put the molds
with the soap mixture in the
freezer for 2 to three hours.
Take it out and use a blow
dryer on the back side of the
mold for a few seconds to
dislodge the soap. This will
make the soap come off
instantly.
Tips & Warnings
Add 1-2 tsp. bitter almond
fragrance oil (not essential
oil) and 1 cup powdered
oatmeal to create a gentle,
scrubbing soap that feels
great on your skin.
Keep vinegar or lemon juice
handy to wash off any lye
that splashes on your skin.
Run a pH test on your soap
using a pH paper strip.
Remember, lower the pH
level, milder the soap.
Always wear safety gear
when making soap. Wear
gloves at all times, especially
when handling lye. If you
splash lye or raw soap on
yourself, do not let it stay as
it may cause chemical burns.
Immediately rinse with cold
water.
Never mix lye in hot water. It
will cause the lye to erupt.
Never use aluminum utensils
to make soap as it reacts
with lye.
