I've been away for a while, so many things has happened..

From Lori paying Fouyo back in his own coins to Mr. D being killed albeit horribly, then friends by fate or should I say friends by circumstances..

A whole lot has happened, but the striking point of all for me remains that “never outshine the master”.. Mr D allowed greed to take over him, which led to his death. Another question is would he have been allowed to live after giving his Boss the real coordinates of the treasure? What if his boss wanted it all for himself, that's still a mystery..

Jecinta, little wonder what her life will become with the resent happenings.. Right now, the killers are after her, she has to be looking over her shoulders, the police too will soon join in the hunt for her, including Kanaku and Fuoyo.

The heist is on.. Things are about to happen, big things.

Chapter 11

FUOYO
Searching for Answers

I already had my mind made up to call Kanaku by afternoon but I didn't expect to have such a nice time with Jessy. I lost track of the time from the moment we went shopping, then watched a 2-hour movie, before having brunch at Domino's. Then we went shopping some more and played video games before having a drink at the bar. The crazy thing was I found her completely engaging, we exchanged banter easily and she could definitely hold her own on any topic. She seemed to enjoy my company too and I realized even if we had stayed indoors, talking and quarreling it wouldn't have made a difference to me. Although I realized her sugar daddy had spoiled her senseless to the point that she almost didn't respect money. Can you imagine she picked ridiculously expensive clothes while I turned to a mental calculator, adding up our total in my mind with each clothing she selected. But she surprised me and paid for both rounds of shopping with her debit card, despite the fact I had picked a sweater and a quite expensive pair of Jordans. The two bills arrived at 120k and she swiped the pos without breaking a sweat, smirking at me while I struggled to maintain a poker face. Okay she was not broke. I got the message loud and clear.

I also got to know a lot about her life and told her about my mom and siblings too. She didn't mention Mr. D and I didn't ask her. We weren't on a date or anything but I didn't want to ruin the mood with prying questions. By 5 pm we decided to enjoy a bottle of red wine before booking our uber and it was while sipping the rich wine she mentioned Mr. D had loved to drink red wine a lot, especially a particular brand called Castillo. From that point, she couldn't stop talking about him, telling me unbelievable tales about the crazy things he did for her, and how he had given her millions of naira in cash and gift over the last 3 years. She had loved his dress-sense and his cologne, his refined and wealthy aura, and the way his voice always sounded like he didn't have Adam's apple, she even loved when he got jealous at times cause it made her feel special.

I knew she needed a listening ear and I sipped my wine in silence wondering if she had loved him and further wondering why the thought bothered me a little.
When our uber arrived we found ourselves back at square one, undecided on the next move to make.

"once we get home, I'll call Kanaku and see about my car, I'm sure he'll have a smart suggestion"

"you're sure?"

"yeah he's very intelligent you know"

I paid the driver and we entered my compound to see the Lexus parked in front of my flat.

"Shit, maybe he dropped it off and left immediately. I'll call him and ask about the key" I couldn't hide the disappointment from my voice. There was something assuring about Kanaku's presence. There was the general feeling that our odds of survival increased considerably with him around, but I wasn't so confident in leading Jessy to solve the mystery of the identity of Mr. D's killers all on my own. Despite how much I liked to claim my Surulere hood heritage, the fact was Kanaku was the most street-smart and calculating person I had ever come across.

I unlocked my gate and dialed his number with one hand while I struggled to dust the soles of my shoe on the welcome mat.

I heard a phone ring from inside at the same time it began ringing in my ear, at the same time Jessy shouted my name, "Fuoyo Kanaku is here"

I hurried inside and was surprised to see him lounging on my chair, watching a pack of courageous hyenas challenged 3 lionesses over a kill on nat geo wild.

"Kanaku! how did you...?"

He smiled, "I have my ways boy...if you really knew my story then nothing I do would surprise you," He looked at Jessy, "And how are you feeling? Hope much better?"

"yes," she nodded, "how about you? How's your wife and baby?"

"girlfriend, not wife" he corrected

"well how is she?" Jessy asked again

"upset with me cause I can't perform my duty"

"woah...what duty?" my ears perked up

He thought about it for the moment and shrugged, deciding he valued us enough or didn't value us enough to share whatever was disturbing him with us. I hoped it was the former.

"I can't Bleep my wife because I keep remembering the dead body and losing any reasonable erection I manage to get!"

Jessy's eyes went wide, unsure of what to say and for a minute I didn't know what to also say, but then we both burst out laughing at the same time, although Kanaku didn't seem to appreciate our laughter.

"It's not funny" he grumbled

"I know it isn't....I just hope I don't have the same problem" I replied

He sighed, "Any luck....?any news yet? have the police caught any of the killers yet?"

"Not yet, we decided to try and find out all we can about Mr. D's work and colleagues but we don't know where to start," I said hoping he'll think of something we hadn't thought of.

"you don't know anybody? any friend of his or family?" He asked Jessy

she shook her head, no.

I added, "the person who introduced them is beefing her and not picking her calls"

Kanaku looked interested in that information, "do you know where she lives?"

"yes we lived together for a year" Jessy replied.

"Then let's pay her a visit" Kanaku suggested, "tonight"

Jessy was unsure, "I don't know....she didn't even really know him. She thought he was a bank ceo"

"don't assume just because of that, she might know something or someone...we have too many unanswered questions" Kanaku reasoned with her and she was nodding before he finished talking.

"where does she stay?" I asked Jessy

"Ajah"

"then we better leave as soon as possible" Kanaku was on his feet. "I need something to take my mind from everything going on at home" he explained his seeming impatience.

Jessy chuckled, "then we better go find answers for the sake of your eh-em"

Reconciliation

At my first glance, Fifi's flat still looked the same from the outside, the baby drier was still in the same corner, drying out her lacy underwear in the balcony, the aloe vera flower pots still lined the wall, only the resurrection plant I noticed was missing. But on a closer look, I realized some changes; the wall paint was peeling, the baby drier was missing a leg and had to balance on 3 stands, even the plants didn't look as lush as I remembered. Maybe I was just a horrible person, seeing things that weren't there to make myself feel good?

The three of us crowded the narrow gate and I felt a wave of nostalgia wash over me before ringing the bell.
I rang it twice and there wasn't any reply. "maybe she isn't in...." I sighed

"Then we can make ourselves comfortable..." Kanaku was already checking inside the flowerpots for a spare key. He glanced at Fuoyo, "whenever you're chanced just buy a iron cutter and leave in your booth for emergencies like this, but right now help me get your jack, these bars are far enough to work..."

"Who's there?" Fifi's voice called from inside and the outside bulb came on.

"Hi Fifi....it's me..." I called out.

The curtain shifted to the side immediately and soon after the door opened and Fifi came outside.
She hadn't really changed and I realized how much I had missed her, she still looked the same as the last time I had seen her, the day I informed her I was moving to my place. She hadn't taken the news very well that day but now she looked to be in perfect control of her emotions. She looked me from the head to toe before regarding my two companions.

"Jessy, so you still remember your way here?" It was a rhetorical question but her pause made the silence a little awkward.

"good evening to you" Fuoyo greeted

"evening" Kanaku echoed

She ignored them and looked me in a way that told me she hadn't forgiven me for snatching Mr. D and running away.

"what can I do for you, I'm kinda busy right now"

"please Fifi we have a couple of questions and I would be grateful if you took time to hear us out"

"I'm listening"

"errm madam, please can we come inside?" Kanaku asked

Fifi flared immediately, "come inside where?" she turned to me, "Jessy who are these ones? What of your precious Mr. D? Has he finally gotten tired of you?" she laughed

"Actually that's why we're here....Mr D was......" I trailed off

she looked at me expectantcly and I couldn't bring myself to complete it.

Fuoyo helped me fill in the gap before she got too impatient, "...was killed last night"

"WHAT?!" that was the last thing she expected to hear, I had managed to shock her yet again.

She stood with wide eyes and a wide-open mouth, blinking at me in shock until she brought herself to ask, "what happened? How? when? who did it?"

"Please madam can we come in and discuss this properly?" Kanaku asked for the second time

"yes yes...sure" she opened the gate and stepped aside while we filed into her apartment. She was still at a loss for words.

I led them into the apartment. She had made some subtle changes, the red carpet had been replaced with a center rug and dark marbled floor reflected the white fluorescent light.

"Are you with the police?" she turned to Kanaku and Fuoyo. I didn't think they looked like police officers but the two imposters obviously felt they could pull it off, they nodded in affirmative.

"yes" Kanaku said

"how did he die?" She asked, she turned to me, "where you there? are you okay?"

Fuoyo cleared his throat, "he was murdered, stabbed to death at a popular hotel last night. No she wasn't there....where were you last night?"

"I...I was here with a friend....he stayed till morning"

"okay..." Fuoyo nodded as if he had magically confirmed her whereabouts.

"Oh my God Jess...I'm sorry, were you guys still together?" she asked me

"yes, he even asked me to marry him" I felt Fuoyo roll his eyes beside me.

"oh now I feel so terrible for not picking your calls" She slumped into a chair and put her head in her hands.

I was surprised she was so concerned about me. How could I have forgotten her good parts? how she was so caring and always looking after me first, she had shown me tough love and given me some tough advice and even helped me overcome my initial fears about Mr. D

Fuoyo was probably best at imitating a police officer because he did most of the talking. "we have cause to believe his death is work-related, Jessy said she met him through you, is there anything about him you want to share?"

"I don't really know much about him...I met him a couple of years ago at sailor's lounge he offered to pay for my drink and asked me out on a date. During the date, he told me he was a bank manager and I believed him"

"Where does he live? does he have any family?"

"I know he lives on the island but he never takes anyone home," she glanced at me, "did you ever get to see his house?"

"no"

"I'm not aware of any family here in Nigeria" Fifi added

"Shit, so you're telling us this man is a ghost or what?" Kanaku lost his cool, "think harder, there's something you're forgetting"

"Believe me I don't think....ooh" her eyes narrowed hesitantly

"what is it?" the 3 of us asked immediately

"He once hooked me up with a friend of his, said it was someone from work....a dirty old man...and I only went out with him once"

Fuoyo and I exchanged a glance, "can you remember his name?"

"not really, but I still have his number, let me get my phone..." she hurried to her room and 2 minutes later she shared the contact she had saved as, 'Mr D friend'

"where did you guys meet? do you know his house?" I asked

"He sent me the address for our meetup, it was a private house but I don't know if it belonged to him or not"

"Do you still have the address?" Kanaku asked her

"no oo, I deleted the message after the date...even the number too, it was saved to my google account so I still had it when I signed into my new phone"

"why did you delete it?" Fuoyo asked

"He....." she trailed off, looking down at the floor

"Fifi this is important you can talk to us" I pleaded

"He was into extreme sadism and BDSM he would have killed me if I went back"

"But can you remember where?" Kanaku pressured

Fifi shut her eyes, and I saw something terrible had happened which she had tried to forget. But I still saw how hard it was for her to pick about repressed memory, to try and remember the venue without recalling what had happened in the venue.

"Yes I can remember some details like the bus stop and the street, I don't know the house number anymore but I can remember enough to describe the house if it's still the same as it was then you won't have any trouble locating it"

"can you tell me how this man looks, his physical appearance?" Fuoyo asked

"He was really tall and he was around the same age with Mr. D, from the beginning I was uneasy in his presence and I...remember thinking how strong he was and praying he didn't choke me to death while repeating the safe word over and over which he ignored till I blacked out..." Fifi began to cry, the memory I suspected she had kept buried for years was now uncovered and hurt her like a fresh wound. "he....he anally raped me while I was unconscious and I woke up to the most unbelievable pain...I couldn't even walk...." Fifi began to sob more and I felt my heartbreak, I put my hands around her neck and sobbed with her.

She was strong. She had gone through hell, constantly went through hell to get to where she was and stay there yet I had turned my back on her because of some stupid jealousy she had every right to feel.

"Forgive me Fifi....I'm sorry I threw our friendship away cause of Mr D...please forgive me"

She only cried more which in turn only made me more teary-eyed.

KANAKU

Gingered

I was nearly blind with fury by the time I keyed the ignition and sped off. Fuoyo yet again stayed in the back seat with Jessy. She was still a little teary-eyed but was telling us how her friend had taken her in when she first came to Lagos and looked after her before finally introducing her to Mr D.

"She always wanted the best for me, everything just happened too fast before either of us could adjust," Jessy said wistfully. "I can't imagine the pain she must have felt, waking up to feel violated, knowing there was nothing she could do cause people will only laugh and say how can a prostitute get raped? They won't understand the trauma...Oh that man is very evil"

Fuoyo interjected, "Mr D wasn't exactly a saint either...when she told him what did he do? Offered her money and more or less told her to forget it which she tried to"

"Until today...."I muttered calmly.

"until today" Fuoyo agreed "Hey where are you going?" he demanded when I missed a turning

"we're closer to Chevron like this, let's check out the address first, see what we find"

"oh....but we were going back to the Mainland now.." Fuoyo said

"and it's almost 11" Jessy added

"I don't care if it's 3am now is the best time to sniff out the bastard, if you guys aren't gingered enough, I'll drop myself off and find my way there alone" I sounded in a fierce no-nonsense tone

"Sometimes when I think this man can't surprise me, he drops another bomb in my face," Fuoyo said to Jessy and I floored the acceleration in response.

"That stuff really affected him," Jessy was still speaking about me, "it's alright Kanaku, he'll pay for Fifi and everyone else he has hurt,,,we'll make sure"

"And find out what his connection with the late Mr D is" Fuoyo added

"yes that too.."

I said nothing, I could only stare straight ahead while the rage I had felt hearing Jessy's friend tearfully narrate her ordeal lit a fire in me I knew wouldn't go away until I had done what was in my mind or something close enough.

"I hope we catch a break at the address, all this Kanaku ginger can not waste" Fuoyo smiled at me through the rearview, I knew he was trying to lighten my mood and would have given a smile at least for the effort but I couldn't. I hated rapists with a passion and the passion was trippled if I found out the victim had been sodomized.

In prison I had become friends with a young boy, Right from time, he had seemed out of place with the violent entities that called the Kirikirin maximum prison home. He was barely 20 and smaller than everybody else, about 5'5 and weighed at least half the body mass of the average moderately built felon. Because of his small stature, we had given him the nickname, mosquito. Mosquito was a very likable fellow. What he lacked for in physical strength, he made up for in mental strength. He was street smart, probably the smartest street guy I ever met. He taught me to play chess and always knew so much about life that he got me to begin reading of my own free will for the first time in my life, a book called meditation by Marcus Aurelius which helped me a lot when I got out of prison.
Because of his childlike size and how well the guards and inmates liked him, mosquito was granted more freedom than the rest of us and became an unofficial middle man for prisoners, he could get you weed for cigaretts or vice versa, or a bottle of gin for whatever he deemed a valuable enough trade. Mosquito was the most physically vulnerable person in the hell hole but was still the safest. Nobody wanted to harm the guy who could get you a day-old burger for just some sticks of cigarettes.

Then one day he confided in me that Greyhound was constantly making passes at him and had gotten a little too handsy on a couple of occasions. Greyhound was another inmate serving a 40-year sentence for killing 4 bank staff during a robbery. He was a mean fellow and we stayed out of each other's way. I wasn't afraid of him but I was determined to avoid trouble as my release date drew nearer.

Mosquito complained to me one particular night that Greyhound had crossed the line and touched him inappropriately, almost dry humping him in the workshop. I was disgusted and promised my friend that I would put a stop to it. That afternoon during our yard hour, I saw Greyhound but decided not to approach him because the warden and a couple of guards were in view. So I did nothing, didn't even warn him to keep off. The next morning, mosquito's body was discovered in the library. He had been raped to death, his fragile body almost torn into 2 by the inhuman act and degradation he had suffered before dying a painful death. There was a couple of whispers, Greyhound's name came up and I remembered how I had dismissed his worry on more than 3 occasions until it was too late to save him and it killed me inside.

I almost dammed the consequences and went after Greyhound immediately but for a favorite statement of Mosquito, that kept replaying in my head. He used to say; "everything is about perfect timing..."

So I waited for the perfect timing, consumed by guilt and spurred on by the thought of revenge. The perfect timing came 7 months later when I finally caught Greyhound without his clique, preparing to have a shower.

His body was discovered later that day when cell block D had plumbing problems and the inmates were transferred to our cell block for an impromptu shower. His head had been smashed into the hard floor continuously until his skull split open and sent bone splinters down his brain. Most of his teeth had been knocked down his throat and he had been castrated and his penis stuffed in his mouth. The sight was gory and even made some inmates of cell block D shout out in horror and puke their guts out. Greyhound was the first and last person I ever killed, but his death didn't bring any closure, only made me get angrier and regret my earlier reluctance to get involved when even a word of warning might have saved Mosquito's life.

Since then, if I was reading the newspaper or watching Tv and the topic of rape was mentioned, I remembered my friend and how I let him down and I fell into a dark rage. It's been 8 years now and tonight was the first time I had encountered another rape victim physically. And the moment she had begun to cry about being sodomized, the rage had come over me like it first had when Mosquito's body had been discovered. But this time there was no warden or prison guards to stand in my way.

So I couldn't even smile or patronize Fuoyo or Jessy as they tried to cheer me up. They thought I was gingered by Fifi's story but they couldn't understand how deep it was for me. The story had only triggered my demons. I could only hope the address wasn't a dead end.

"We'll be there in 20 minutes tops" Fuoyo announced consulting his google map
