Every single day, Nigeria Government is making studying medicine as a course useless and unworthy.

Many young graduates are subjected to private hospitals and are paid peanuts (60k-100k) it can be 120k if it is in a good private hospital. Government is trying as much to limit employment. Every year they graduate nothing less than 1000 doctors and this number is too low According to the WHO directive. It supposed to be 1 doctor to 100 People at most 200 People in rural settlements but Nigeria it 1 doctor to 100thousand people or more.
My advice to aspirants is not to get high hopes. The system crumbles everything. Those that can leave will leave.
Now Residency is now a tough thing now. People are paying for spaces into specialities. Nigeria should use grade system like the US do. Once you can't get a particular CGPA forget that residency. All these wealthy people and "I know person" People are doing their own.
I hope Medicine in Nigeria doesn't reach the "Engineering" phase of unemployment.

Secondly Nigeria is one of few countries in the world that pays house officers. House officers are doctors in training, they do not perform any role in the hospital without supervision.

In the U.S. students pay to enter housemanship. If doctors are demanding we treat them like it is done in other climes then we must start from somewhere.

I pulled through it with some kind of joy because i knew that at the end of the month, I would see that alert that i would use to take care of that and my family.

I bought my present laptop with that intern money. Put myself through NYSC when the money was almost non existent and was told to work a week straight for those bloody soldiers(i later told their CMD(a colonel) to give me a call allowance or Bleep himself) with that housejob money.

Imagine being treated in the hospital by someone without that insurance, without that reason to keep on going? You will be treated by people telling you to go and Bleep yourself.

Mr doctor, as an intern you have no business been called for emergencies especially at odd hours of the day. It is the work of registrars (resident doctors in the hospital). Blame the failed system mostly on the CMD and governing council of the hospitals in Nigeria. Everybody likes to do oga in Nigeria so the small registrars push the work to you the intern because an average Nigeria does not want to work but to collect salary.

Medical students know that Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are not easy subjects during JAMB with limited time. Engineering is not easy, but not respected.

It is because everything works. I don’t want to write much. Nigerian doctors are also fraudulent. I know an O and G doctor who operates a successful fertility clinic (IVF) in the south south. He does not pay his correct tax to Edo state government. I have first hand information because a close friend works in his account department. So please in abroad people pay the correct tax amount, their government put the money to good use. The doctors in abroad are ready and willing to work for their salary but that’s not the case in Nigeria. Let’s be truthful to ourselves.

I really don’t know if they use the term house officer but she’s doing her intern or whatever they call there and she’s not been paid. I would try to get more accurate details from here. Plus in 2009, my first cousins was doing his residency in USA as an emergency doctor, he told us they don’t pay resident doctors in USA but we didn’t believe and I’m not very sure but I will also ask my sister.

I can see 2 or so individuals on this thread spouting rubbish confidently. That your father is a consultant or you've been to a clinic in Austria does not make you knowledgeable about health care in the Western world.

1) a lot of Nigerian doctors in the UK choose GP because it's the quickest route(3years)to become a specialist in the Uk. They have wasted years in Nigeria already, it would be foolhardy to expect someone in his 30s to go start 7 years surgical training in the UK.
That being said, we still have Nigerians doing training in other specialities, though it's roughly 25% of the total number of Nigerians in UK Training.

2) Registrars are the driving force of any tertiary hospital anywhere in the world. You can take that to the bank. And a medical registrar is THE main guy in UK hospitals.

3) again, I implore my colleagues in final year, start your japa plans with IELTS in final year. You won't regret it.

Nigeria and Nigerians will sort themselves out.
