Good day Madam
I have few questions:
1. What are the prerequisites one needs to have to work with the UN(i.e Academic qualifications etc.)?
2. Is it limited to certain age?
3. Are the whole hives and jives of travel and exploration with cumbersome benefits really true?
Thank you
I await your response.

So here's response to your questions...

1) minimum of a bachelor's degree or HND will do, plus 2 years work experience, easiest way is to join as an intern or a UNV.

2) Most times, age does not count when recruiting for the UN.

3) UN pay scale is standardized according to the international civil service standard, so your salary/benefits is in accordance with your grade as at when you get recruited. You get exposed to training, learning and development opportunities both internally and externally. People posted to hardship duty station (conflict zones) are always not accompanied by family & loved ones, and so you get a little extra pay for the inconveniences of staying away for extended periods from your family, and also danger pay cos you are working in a dangerous location where things can go sour at a flick. People posted to relatively stable location don't get these extra allowances.

You get feild allowances when you go to the feild & the feild allowance is dependent on the location. In some UN agencies, You are expected to cater for your accomodation, transport, feeding, laundry, from the feild allowances.

Most times you need to get information on youth innovation/ entrepreneur ship via the official webpage of the UN agencies eg UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR, follow them on LinkedIn, Instagram, twitter, check out their official website for information on these.

Thanks, I appreciate

I read that UN recruits their staff mainly from their volunteers... As they have virtually all skill set in these volunteers

Not true, they recruit both internally and externally, but volunteering is one of the easiest way to get into the UN system.

Do you have any idea if the United Nations and it's agencies like IMF, FAO,UNICEF, UNESCO etc do recruit Librarians?

Yes they do, but not as librarian, most recruit them to work as information management specialist....so you might want to explore what it takes to be an IM officer/specialist.

my brother, such question is not really necessary. Believe me Nigérians are very good people irrespective of the tribe and religion, and are always ready to help. I have been working with the UN too since 2010 and I got the job through a Nigerian I never knew ab initio.
Again, please stop such negative energy.

Yes, photographers work mostly with communication and advocacy section, but on project basis.......you do a project, submit your deliverables & get paid....that's it. In summary, more of a contract or consultancy basis.

Great thread . thanks for this.
Does creating a profile on inspira and applying really work? What other options are available? What other general requirements or processes do we need that aren't part of the typical job search process Nigerians are used to? Can someone who doesn't know influential people or isn't refered still get a job there? With no powerful referees.

Most QA/QC control position depends on the individual UN agencies & thier mandates....a QC/QA specialist in IAEA will not handle same QA/QC roles in UNICEF, So it all depends on the organization.....but yes you can get a job as a QA/QC specialist in the UN.

U don't need any influential or powerful referee to get a job in the UN, I never had any referrals nor powerful referees infact one of my references was my colleague in my former place of work, not a senior officer or manager @ that....we were both on same grade (field officers)..... let's always try to realize that UN is not Nigerian civil service where you need to have a Godfather somewhere....rather channel your energy to stepping up your resume, work experience and get ready for the recruitment job test/interview....cos you are competing with the best of the best......tailor your job search with targeted keywords related to your profession.....eg....if you are an economist, you can tailor your job search buy using keywords such as

Economist
Economic Analyst
Social policy
Polictical Analyst
Economic researcher

Anything economist..........that way you stream line your job search engine to return dedicated results for the field economist.

This is absolutely wrong, you don't need to know anybody to land a job in the UN, I personally did not know anybody when I got recruited from Nigeria.....one thing we must know is that the recruitment process is highly competitive.....they recruit the best of the best....so you must be ready to compete both locally & internationally for the role.
Man know man exist even in the UN...However, you must demonstrate certain levels of competence...

Aside medical practitioners ( Doctor & Nurses), Social & Development workers and Logistics & supply professionals, what other profession is highly regarded at the UN?
2 : is a Masters degree a requisite for any role ?
Civil engineering/mechanical for areas where they have settlements and also do wash interventions...

Master is always an advantage but experience counts for more...

You can get a job with the UN or any organization irrespective of your course of study. What counts is your experience and skill set.

It is practically impossible to enter the UN or any international organization straight away without any prior experience in the NGO sector except for positions that require professionals in other fields e.g. Engineers, Security Experts, Public Health Specialists etc. What is advisable is for you to work through the ranks by starting out with smaller organizations to build your skills and garner the necessary experience...Another channel is to volunteer with them...

One thing I know is that for every opening, they give preferences to their former staff. It is only in select cases they recruit from outside and here, your performance in the interview is key...If you have the necessary experience and skills, it is easier when you have someone to help you in.

It’s unfortunate that Nigerians don’t believe that someone can help. I have friends working at UN agencies and almost all of them were recruited through LinkedIn or help from persons like this. I’m not vouching for the person of the Op, if you are interested set up a LinkedIn account, subscribe to these UN agencies, follow Op’s Steps but if she demands for cash.... just ignore her. Write papers and recommendations to issues around you. Everyone wants to work with the UN; however, many cannot profer solutions to issues around them. The UN does not employ liabilities but folks with solutions with issues.
Well done Op
thank you for this you just answered my question
