Merriam Webster dictionary defines confraternity as a society devoted to a religious or a charitable cause.
I certainly know from information available to all, that the pyrate confraternity is a charity organization, made up of like minds with the goal of creating an egalitarian society where the strong protects the weak and men are weighed by the strength of their character and not by the colour of their skins, religion or ethnicity. Little wonder why they are highly revered in and outside Nigeria for notable achievements in humanitarian activities and social reengineering.
I guess if this isn't a noble society of men, they likes of Prof Wole Soyinka and hundreds of notable men who associates with this group, could have dissociated for preservation of their reputation and image.

Its up to you to keep propagating falsehood or discover the truth for yourself - either ways , that doesn't change the truth ...
The Pyrates do not claim to be perfect humans but they are far different ( in substance and essence ) from campus cults ...
This misnomer eventually made the Pyrates to withdraw their activities from the Nigerian campuses.... Sadly though the wrong connotation has continued and you are unknowingly joining the bandwagon to perpetuate falsehood...
Its up to you to keep spreading the lies or realise the truth ...

Can you go to a Book Haram website and apply for membership or go to their club houses in the 36 states to grab a beer or meal. Does Boko Haram carry out advocacy under their name?. Can they hold an event and invite the public through all major media. Are they recognized by the government and duly registered by CAC. My brother like I said carry out research before commenting. It is confusing. But I think the campus frat is different from these set ups.
Though these ones have equally been abused. In 2010 I left the Pyrates induction ground at Egbeda after buying the form and paying the application frees. The real SeaDogs take new members I think once in 5 or 10 yeeas I can't rememer now.
I had your same impression back then. I met pastors and other noble men that came to enrol. During roll call, you would say your profession and state you reason to want to join. But then, the Bible says by their fruits...
They would use all manner of unruly words including calling us the new inductees animals and threatening to manhandle everyone. There were even armed police guards that were just looking on. I decided to sneak out and bolt.
Forget Wole Soyinka, he might not know what happens in the hood. Young men should just desist.
A way seemeth right unto man but the end thereof is destruction.
A word is enough for the wise.

...You were scammed and probably would have been scammed more if you didn't leave that fake group parading itself as the Pyrates (unknown to many unsuspecting citizens, there are many groups now parading themselves as Pyrates but are actually fakes in search for money and members)...
For your information, You don't need to buy a form to join the Pyrates ...I will have to stop here for now

Once Nigerians hear the word 'confraternity' then tend to interpret it as cultism or a cult group. Even the educated ones also see it that way. Civilization is still very far from naija

So if Rhames hasn't seen me in public saying "I condemn boko-haram killings", it means I support boko-haram? Can we please be more rational with our thinking; stop looking for who to blame for your predicaments my friend.

Nevertheless, WS has always condemned the activities of criminal gangster organisations, cultist and occultists who claim to be confraternities in higher institutions. To express his disapproval and dissociate his group from the madness, he has since pulled out his group the Pyrates from higher institutions. Like several people have mentioned here, to be a member, you have to have graduated and I think even finished NYSC.

But anyway, feel free by all means to keep blaming him for your life's predicaments if that makes you feel better.

Confraternity ➜ Youth gang ➜Mafia.

1) Fraternities and Sororities: A confraternity, fraternity or sorority (and in, America, Greek letter organisation) are social clubs in universities in many parts of the world. These associations are very common in American universities and very many Americans, including prominent politicians, businessmen, and entertainment stars are members of the associations. The associations were generally formed to help their members academically and serve as a forum for people to network and connect. Fraternity = brotherhood, sorority = sisterhood. Former president George H. W. Bush was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon at Yale, Bill Clinton is an honorary member of Phi Beta Sigma, and George W. Bush is a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon at Yale like his father. Basketball star, Michael Jordan, is a member of Omega Psi Phi, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha and comedian and actor Cedric “The Entertainer” is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi.

What Wole Soyinka started was a fraternity that was meant to be like the fraternities in American universities.

2) Youth gangs: A gang is a group or society of associates, friends or members of a family with a defined leadership and internal organization that identifies with or claims control over territory in a community and engages, either individually or collectively, in illegal, and possibly violent, behaviour.

Many youth gangs sprang up in the United States in the period between the 1940s and the 1960s. The most well known are the Bloods and the Crips. These youth gangs control territory through acts of violence and intimidation. They usually have their unique colours and symbols like handshakes, walking styles and dances. They could violently attack and even kill someone for wearing their colour in their territory. They raise funds through illegal means like bullying and intimidation, drug sales, etc.

Many fraternities in Nigerian universities became youth gangs in the 1970s and most especially in the 1980s. They engaged in violent acts like murder and assault, gruesome initiation rituals, etc. In response to this, Professor Wole Soyinka pulled the Pyrates Fraternity, now known as the National Association of Seadogs, out of the universities.

3) Mafia: A mafia is a type of organized crime syndicate whose primary activities are protection racketeering, arbitrating disputes between criminals, and brokering and enforcing illegal agreements and transactions. Mafias often engage in secondary activities such as gambling, loan sharking, drug-trafficking, prostitution, and fraud. Examples of Mafia syndicates include the Cosa Nostra, the Yakuza, the Camorra and the Bratva.

The members of these 1980s and 1990s youth gangs have become older and some of them have moved out of Nigeria. They have established their organisations as criminals syndicates in places like Canada, Italy and the United States. They engage in drug trafficking, pimping prostitutes and other illegal activities and they have formed agreements with or fought wars against the Italian Mafia, the American Mafia and other such illegal organisations.

Some members of these organisations have become government officials and high ranking members of the society in Nigeria.

What Wole Soyinka founded in 1952 was a fraternity, not a youth gang or mafia syndicate.

Maybe but why was it called pyrate/pirate? Knowing what that word means, isn't rather an indication of the kind of fraternity it was?

You see, all these things have been discussed so many times over the decades such that when people make comments like the kind that I have seen on this thread, I wonder if they are serious or joking. That's why I sometimes choose not to answer.

What did Wole Soyinka study at the University of Ibadan? Answer: English literature, Greek, and Western history.

What is Professor Wole Soyinka's profession? Answer: He is a playwright and novelist.

Where did all those names come from? Answer: Treasure Island.

What is Treasure Island? Answer: It is a book that is often used to English Literature.

I listened to a BBC interview a long time ago (decades ago), in which Professor Soyinka addressed this issue. The interviewer called these organisations "cults" and Professor Soyinka said that they are not cults, they are youth gangs. He explained that it was because of these youth gangs that he ordered that the Pyrates Fraternity should cease existing on university campuses. He blamed the government for allowing these youth gangs to exist and he even hinted at the fact that a lot of the members are children of people in government and that's why the government had not done anything about them. He condemned the barbaric acts that were committed by these youth gangs.

That was on the BBC World Service Radio a long time ago.

Ok. Thanks.

But I still don't see how the name is justified though. There are a billion names they could have chosen from literature, names that would better reflect their goal. Why pyrate? Fraternity isn't necessarily good or bad. It depends on what they do. But when the word is qualified with another word that is explicitly negative, would you still blame anyone for drawing conclusions on the type of fraternity?

And since he has called for the end of these fraternities, why still dress in red and match with members at the burial of an ex member? What message does that send in these times when we are struggling to put an end to all this?

Like I said ignorance is your problem. The PC has gone to courts and obtained judgement that they are not a cult the latest obtained at a Court of Appeal against the Rivers State Government in February 2020.It is not a cult anymore than the AMORC or ROF or Masons you referred to. How does it do more harm than good? Do they engage in any illicit activity? The club houses are open to members and non members alike unlike the ROF you mentioned. I was not particular about the "fraternity". Any group of people with shared interest could form a fraternity. So no, this isn't about the meaning of the word "fraternity" as a fraternity could be good or bad. It's about how they named the fraternity, Pyrates. Even if they called it "Pyrate Angels", it would still beg for answers as regards why the angels call themselves pirates. In this case, it could be argued that they never had bad activities or intended any. That might be true, there's no way I'd know. But I'm only saying the name they chose to give the fraternity doesn't really reflect the claim that they are in it for good. You've clarified it's from literature. But seeing how vast literature is, it's still mind boggling why they'd settle for a name that easily sells them as a bunch of thieves (pirates).

Anyway, the idea that the name was just based off literature is a thoery as Soyinka was probably the only one who was a Literature student out of the so-called "Magnificent 7". According to Soyinka himself, the name "Pyrates Confraternity" was chosen for "fun" and intended to mock, and the "y" was intended to dissociate the group from modern pirates. My point here is that the name which might have been fun to them then does not really support the image they try to sell now. Pirates are robbers. And I wouldn't blame anyone for being sceptical about that.

I'm not saying thier fraternity was bad, I'm saying the name is enough reason to be sceptical. So I wouldn't insinuate people are dumb for being sceptical about it.
