The worrying thing with schooling here is the bullying as well. A friend of mine said she used to be called a monkey back for taunts as far back as Year 5.

Like raising a child is not hard enough, na raising one to be resilient and having a tough skin is key, so it doesn't damage their confidence or mental health.
When someone call you a monkey, don't forget to quickly show them this picture. Just as humans, monkeys are black and white too.

Rent is due at the end of the month.....bills , problems and demands from naija e no dey finish . ...... this can cause people to go on MUTE

Bro, even we in nigeria, the billing and pressure from family and friends is crazy.
Nowadays, i hardly post on my whatsapp status again because they will know am around and start billing me.
They use that to track me alot.

If am to give everybody asking me money 50% of their request, i will go broke too.
Pls am stranded, i need to go for a job interview but not transport to lagos, my car is at apapa needs Clearance before entering demiurge, my mum is in the hospital and we need money to clear the bills, my landlord is about throwing me out, my children were chased out of class bcus of fees etc
I am tired and the most annoying part is that some have made it a habit of it becoming a reoccurring expenditure.
They bill you today, give them and they will give you one month space or two while regularly greeting you to maintain the relationship so that it won't look as if the only time they chat you up is when they need money from you.
It is really annoying

As if a child will say that to his or her classmates... An adult might have a thick skin or a way to reason with or educate or even ignore racial teasing and ignorant comments but it is not easy for child; even with parental teaching, support and outlook...

Children like to be liked and want to be part of the crowd, not stand out in a political or other different ways... They also like to talk; usually without filter. A child goes to school and tells classmates that they eat with the hands (not likely going to say fingers), the rest will immediately say that they are primitive and tribespeople like the unclad ones they see in the television...

* A child recently started school in the UK and the teacher got talking just to get him settled and welcomed... Quickly, the child says that some of the kids misbehave a lot and that if it were in his old school in Nigeria, the children will be beaten soundly. Of course, the teacher says that nobody beats children in their school and it is not allowed in the country... One thing led to another, the teacher asked him if his parents beat him... There was a call to the mother that afternoon, even before the child reached home...
Thankfully, the mother is the one that does the smacking (not beatings), imagine if it was the step-father?

Bullying and racism is worse with children because they cannot be punished that much and it is hard to reason with them like adults - they learn it from home anyway.

Just let the children be - na manage, manage with this country

It does not work for everyone... It depends on your family and how much you have invested or they have invested in you. And it also depends if it is your immediate sibling or elderly retired parents on very little.

Moreover, I just do not talk finance or money with anyone, I will not be reduced to their level - with most people lying about their finances and all that carry on...

Below is a snapshot of two statements from two PhD holders of Ibo extraction. We can easily pick out the typical Nigerian who attempts to detract from action by using a discombobulation of words to achieve "nothing". May I never be a Joe Abah in life!

Hello my people.
I hope we are all doing okay.

I beg, help guide a "JJC". Arrived in UK (Scotland) about a month now and jobhunting. I was a Sales Analyst while in Nigeria.
I spend hours on the job websites daily but most come back unsuccessful. Even ordinary Clerical Assistant Job is not coming forth. Care/support work is also asking 6 months experience. It is depressing.

I also need ideas on school searching for my 3+ child as the few ones I contacted are saying no space.
Please enlighten me.

If you can afford it, don’t invest all in crypto et al, please consider private schools. E get why.

I hear you @mamatukwas
A strict and disciplined school is great to have. Some of our comprehensives just cater to the slowest/neediest children leaving swatches of able kids unchallenged academically and left to fend for themselves.

I calculated what it would cost to send my kids to the cheapest private. It was over £216k embarassed embarassed embarassed
I still had to buy a good house and save for retirement among other things after that. My hand no strong reach.

I can't burn it all in the hope that my kids would take care of me.
The next best thing for us was moving out of the inner city to suburbs for good schools.

Guys I need advise My wife is coming for her master's at university but we intend travelling together with our two kids.
I would like to know if it's a wise decision for me as I have a government job paying above 100k.
Considering starting from the scratch..how easy can I get a job as a graduate accountant with over 10 years experience.
All advises are welcome

If you can get one as a backup, travel with your wife and see things yourself.

You are likely to get a job that pays far more than what you are currently earning in Nigeria but it will not be in your current area of work.

You can use this opportunity to get UK work experience/certification to improve your profile.

Your immigration status may be an issue because you will be coming with 2 and the half years visa with no guarantee of extension or getting permanent residency, that will not help in your efforts to get a professional job.

Honestly the aspect of dressing has been worrying me since I got here. I see female kids in skimpy dresses all around and I wonder if they don't have parents. One must be very intentional in raising kids here with a lot of prayers.

I hope you know that the traditional outfit for the Igbos is short skirt and short boob tube. Right?

Wearing skimpy dresses in Nigeria is a problem because those women will get harassed (just like you are doing now- indirectly).

When next you see a “skimpily” dressed person, mind your business.

Who said going to university is the key to success especially in the uk ?.

Below are 2 scenarios/Example (Child A and Child B)

Child A goes to university and graduates . He/she is already indebted to the government (student loan). He would find it almost impossible or at least 7/10 years of savings before he can get on the property leader.

On the other hand, Child B goes into an apprenticeship and within 3/4 years he/she has gained experience and possibly is a supervisor/ manager. He has no debt and can quickly get on the property leader.

Child A is searching for suitable jobs but isn’t lucky because he lacks experience. When he finally get a jobs, he meets child B as his supervisor/manager.

In conclusion unless your child is gifted academically, don’t force university into there head just to boost your ego amongst your peers. University doesn’t guarantee success.
These days you can go to university even when you are 80 (obansanjo et al..)

This is sweet and all, but let’s not forget that on average, even with two or three degrees, we will be equated with their average staff. So imagine not having a degree.

Also, degrees speed up promotions. There’s a reason they get to a level and get stagnated while we surpass (irrespective of the slow start).

When I was a student, a 20 year old was my supervisor, after my probation I was asked if I wanted to become a supervisor as well. It too that 20 year old 2-3 years to make super but I was offered it after 6 months.

So it’s not by force to get a degree but please let’s not forget the colour of our skin and how we always have to over-prove ourselves.

Nor am I invested in their choice of lifestyles - just like any parent, I would like them to be conventional obviously, but as long as you're not living in my house, feel free to tattoo yourself from head to toe, pierce the whole of your body, flex the baby mama thing and litter the UK/EU/entire world with your pikins, partner with whoever. I will never kill myself over another person whom I cannot control - mine na to learn how to navigate my way through the ISA, SIPP jungle in preparation for securing sufficient income to live on in old age - that's the only thing within my control.

I really love this. I should learn.

If you can take a short study leave. Come with the family and inspect the lay of the land. Be open minded and ready to be change.
UK is not a place to attempt without a plan.
It is a small island. There are opportunities but you will use your torchlight to find them.

Forget your 10 years experience in accountancy. Please don't be sentimental about it. You want to be able to thrive in a new place, you must learn new things.
Be ready to start from scratch. Have you done ACCA? Sprinkle everything you do with IT. So think IT with Accounting. Look up jobserve.com and see the kind of jobs available. Pay attention to the skills and experience needed.
After checking out the land, maybe go back with the kids (because childcare is a killer in the UK) , go back to your old job and study all you can online. Reinvent yourself. Then come back ready and hit the ground running.
Just my two pennies grin

When next you see a “skimpily” dressed person, mind your business.
First of all, you can air your opinion without direct and indirect insults. Doing that shows maturity and ones ability to engage others intelligently.
Second of all, I disagree that the traditional outfit of Igbos is a short skirt and tube. I hope the Igbos on this platform will correct me if I'm wrong.
Thirdly, wearing skimpy dresses in Nigeria is a problem because it is not part of our culture to dress scantily. Our culture encourages decency and covering of private parts which these skimpy dresses reveal.
It is so wrong of you to say that I harassed women with my post. I don't support harassment of women in any form or shade and it is wrong of you to accuse me of such. If you're in the UK, you can be sued for wrong accusation.

There is no way I'll marry abroad and not make sure prenup is involved

Life happens, love could turn sour and your partner can decide tomorrow they want to abandon ship.. Prenup will help in that case to avoid stories that touch

Lol this is you thinking your wife can’t be richer than you. I will happily sign prenup so that when my company blows, I won’t share the money with you.

It’s easy for me to want prenups because they think they will always be the wealthy ones- well times have changed. Na me Dey even offer the prenup sef.

Just at my work place though I have quit the place.

One of the bosses there took I and some other black people (Nigerians) to be precise. Gave us the dirtiest hardest job ever, we worked and didn't go for the second break. We were tired, we murmured amongst ourselves that we were tired, I told them when I see the boss I'd ask him to let us have our break, when the boss came, I asked him, instead of these Nigerians to back me up, they kept mute and I thought to myself, if this guy gets mad and decides to fire, he could fire me easily without problem and probably paint me thr bad guy, but the many Nigerians never talked they kept mute.

This is really a problem.

This is the reason why someone said that we don’t deserve better than Buhari. We pretend we care about each other but it’s truly all man for himself.
